Happy New Year.
Every January I sit and list my goals for the year, personal and career wise. It is interesting to look back and see where we stand today comparing to what we wrote two years ago, and if you make sure to review the goals every few weeks it will keep you on track or at least you can follow the way you look at things differently. I wish us all to reach our goals for 2009 with love and joy.

I spent the holidays and celebrated the new year in Rio, Brazil. Here are some of my Rio highlights and some resources for you or your friends if you go visit, and you should:

Ipanema is a beautiful, safe area, and that is where I would reccomend to stay in Rio.

The live in house keeper that came with the apartment took us on our first day to experience this local buffet, which became our favorite lunch spot. You only pay for what you choose to eat, based on the plate weight, and the selection includes Brazilian dishes of rice, sea food and meat as well as fantastic desserts. My favorites were the roasted beef, rice with sausage and the guyava, coconut flan.

Every day in the morning and after the beach, I picked up a fresh fruit shake and sandwich. My favorites were: Conji and peach juice and the grilled pineapple and steak sandwich.

Other food and beverage highlight:

-The caipirinhas-if on the beach or in a restaurant, the selection of fresh fruit you can have it made with it is great. Try one with the cashew fruit (not the nuts, but the fruit it sits on) which tastes like nothing you ever tasted.

The Corcovado (Jesus statue)-even if not for religious reason, worth seeing for the views, just then you will have an understanding of the magnitude of Rio.

The museum of Niteroi-You can take the ferry across the river or use a driver to take you there and to the fortress (don't remember the name, ask when in the Museum). The museum was designed by Niemeyer, great architecture and views of Rio from another perspective.

I feel like you can't come back from Rio without new Brazilian cut bathing suits and havayanas flip flops. bathing suits I bought at Blueman (www.blueman.com.br) which has great selection, however, Reserva (www.usereserva.com)with a smaller selection for men only, had very stylish ones that I liked.

The Havayana shop was on 76 Farme de Amoedo, which is also the "gay" street, a very small shop with a large selection, you can even bedazzle or accessorize your flip flops.

I am in Miami now, on my way to Rio, Brazil for a vacation. I was watching the news and talking to a friend in New York. The reporter was talking about the blizzard in New York and so I asked my friend if it is that bad and she replied-No. In the past few weeks, I've been asking myself, how much of this economic crisis is Media made? How much of this hype is created because the newspapers and TV news need to be relevant and play on our fears while selling ad space. It reminds me of one of those Hollywood movies where a made up war is directed by a Hollywood director that was hired by the government.

I wish us all a wonderful 09 with improved global economy, better consciousness and awareness and a lot of great laughs. Amen.

Let's go back a month. I was in Miami for Art Basel, This is my third Art Basel and I think the one I enjoyed the most. The highlights:

Design Miami in the Design district- a show presenting different brands and designers Swarovski,Zaha Hadid, Audi, etc. The venue, was beautifully designed and created for this purpose and will travel for other exhibits.

Naomi Campbell's photo exhibit-the producers created an outdoor area, under a bridge in the design district. The exhibit walls were covered with moss, and the constructed wood floor was cut to accommodate a fish pond-quite the investment and a nice touch.

The Mondrian Hotel-designed by Marcel Wonders, the ground floor is like a design Alice in Wonderland, gold bell chandeliers, bars covered with a lit installation of shower curtains, cabanas made of xxl scale arches of artificial hedges (30 feet high or something like that) even a vending machine featuring Jean Paul Gaultier designs, gold hand cuffs and designer mints. Marilyn Manson was there for dinner and the bar scene was hot.
The convention center-Although not so packed, I think the right crowd was there without the filler crowd. I connected with the selection of art much more than I did in past years. The VIP lounges were very invested, The Ruinart table chandelier was wonderful and the Zaha Hadid "light fixture" is beautiful, I want one for my apartment! (I think they quoted me above hundred thousand euro. not this year.

During Art Basel, My company, Shiraz, catered parties for Holly Hunt (celebrating 25 years in business), a dinner party for Audi on a yacht, a boutique re opening for Louis Vuitton in Boca Raton, and more (15 in total), in New we produced an editor event for I can't believe its not butter (decorated with muffin topieries made our of the product), holidays parties for Apollo Real Estate and
Givaudan and many more, here are some of those images:

A quickie in Dallas-Ft. Worth and the newly renovated Fountainebleau hotel

I travelled to Dallas for a quick visit and got to enjoy a very interesting restaurant in Ft. Worth, which is about 35 minuted drive from Dallas. The area in Ft. Worth is called the Stock Yards and the restaurant is called the Lonesome Dove. The restaurant's interiors look like an old western saloon and some of the guests were wearing big cowboy hats, yeehah! The chef, Tim Love, apparently won an Iron chef match and the food was great.

For gay outing, the Round Up, which is a gay bar/club was highly entertaining, I had such a smile on my face the whole time and even learned how to "Two step" by a handsome cowboy. Again, looks like a western saloon, starts with country music and goes down and dirty with current music.

And last for that trip was White Rock Park, where in a perfect fall afternoon was my dream location for a quiet charming read. It is right by Lakewood in Dallas and worth the trip.

I'm enjoying Karim Rashid's book: design yourself (published by Harpers Collins) Besides being a fan of his work, Karim's philosophy is inspiring and already helped me in finding design solutions with a project I'm working on. The book is styled in an unconventional way that makes it prefect for New York ADDies.

I'm in Miami, working on Art Basel events. I'm going to spend ten days and go back to New York after Art Basel. Last night, I went to see the newly renovated Fountain Bleau Hotel and its gorgeous new interiors and pool side areas, as well as the stunning new club, LIV. The crowd was beautiful, the girls were floating down the steps in stunning gowns but then getting my car, when leaving, from the valet took 30 minuted, oh well.

Restoration Hardware have great down feather slippers, which they call foot duvet. For home, great as self indulgence after a long day at work. The slippers are $20 and come in different earthy tones.Thse foot duvets can be a great holiday gift.

Fall theater, Stacy London and some new product I discovered

I am very pleased with the election results and was very not pleased with the results of proposition 8. It is inevitable that as in many other countries around the world, the United States will recognize gay marriages. All the funds that are channeled to support this cause or fighting against it could have been so useful in so many other ways in this challenged economy and perhaps the Mormon Church should consider using them to aid their supporters rather than fighting this so vigorously.

And to more cheerful subjects, My friend Mario Burrel visited from L.A, Mario used to be a member of the cast on Rent and enjoys theater much. Together we went to see Billy Elliott. The show is fantastic, great music, choreography, set, and cast. This show is a must see

In the beginning of this month I was involved in two events: a dinner party for 120 guests for an organization called outstanding in the field. This organization produces dinner parties around the world and bringing in local farmers and local produce together with local star chefs creates a net work to support local produce businesses. The dinner party took place in 620 loft and garden with notable guest like star chef Mario Batali and Tom Collichio, the event was sponsored by Absolut.

The second event was a holiday gift fair, an event to present new holiday gift options to editors. The event was hosted by Stacy London and featured some great items like scent diffusers by Enfusia, a car that drives on your wall by F.A.O.Schwarz and many more.

How I love Halloween and getting ready for election night

Dressing up for Halloween and hanging out with my friends, the experiences, the laughs, the pictures, it all makes me feel so fortunate about my life. The experience makes me appreciate my freedom, my ability to live life as I want it, at every moment. I started dressing in costume with my friends Marc and Michael three years ago, we were naughty school girls, then geisha and now disco divas. This Halloween started with the getting ready in my office with MAC Pro make up artists making us look pretty, then dinner at Elmo (http://www.elmorestaurant.com/), a subway ride to a private party on Central Park West (we couldn't find the Limo, really) and a limo ride with a major stop and photo shoot in Times Square. Highly reccomended, mucho liberating.

I'm very excited and also nervous about the election on Tuesday. I believe that Obama has the awareness and ability to change things in this country, which is much needed. A lot of my friends are having Election night parties. Here is my suggetions for Tuesday:

1-Champagne-to celebrate and because we need it for the nerves. For a party on a budget, buy Prosseco and compliment it with a tiny drop of St. Germain (http://www.stgermain.fr/) and you can always add a raspberry if you vote for Mccain or a blueberry if you vote for Obama.

2-Comfort food-because these days, comfort is bliss. Make a lean turkey meat loaf and serve it with a mash of sweet potato and steamed vegetable. and for dessert, an apple tart and serve it with vanilla ice cream, all simple to make or order and so comforting. Please go and vote.

3-for an extra twist, make it a masacarade election party get Obama, McCain, Palin, Biden masks or suggest costumes inspired by "Joe six pack" or "Joe the plumber", Hockey mom, or Cindy Mccain showing gold Jewlerry (SNL).

I was looking for this hidden spot for twenty minutes although I had the exact address, the reason was that it was hidden behind a construction facade. Not sure if the facade described is still there, but the interiors in this restaurant is elegant but not overly, contemporary asian, great for groups and very loungy. The food comes as japanes tapas, creative selection, I loved the cocktails with Yamamomo, which is a berry looking fruit, a mix of cherry and plum.

36 hours in Toronto-I went to visit my friend Peter Fentum in Toronto for a short weekend. The flight takes 55 minutes and while landing you can see the city's skyline. Toronto is quite a charming city, very different areas, very clean and handsome. I recommend to take the ferry to Toronto Island which is a park on an island across from the city. The ferry ride allows you to see the city's skyline, the island has a very pretty small beach on the lake.

I also visited a nice restaurant called Cowbell (http://www.cowbellrestaurant.ca/) that serves all local and organic dishes, and went cross country riding in the Canadian forest, that was in the midste of turning its leaves-Beautiful! From Toronto to the Niagra Falls is no more than an hour and a half drive, so if you've never been...

Recent music I listen to includes the British singers Adele and Duffy. Adele's debut album "19" is sexy and romantic and features the hit "Chasing Pavements". Duffy's "Rockferry" is romantic as well, reminds me a bit of Dusty Springfield and the 60's era and is great for having as background music when entertaining.

We are all aware of the dismal economic situation. One truly cannot avoid the headlines. One way I read into all this is the call to slow down. I feel like the universe is calling us to re-evaluate our priorities, and to remember what’s real and important in this life. My friend who works for Martha Stewart told me that in these hard times Americans tend to get back to basics and spend time at home, cooking, with the family. As an optimistic and spiritual person, I find this process to have, in the end, a positive effect: slowing down will allow us to have the capacity to be more aware, in all the major areas of our lives.

At a time of reflection and atonment in the world, we also find ourselves at that very special and holy time in the Jew calendar, Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur is the day of atonement, and the holiest of the Jewish Holidays.The traditions calls for praying, & begging for forgiveness for our actions, while fasting for 24 hours. The holiday starts the eve of Yom Kippur (this Wednesday) with a meal (Hello, "Jewish" everything starts and ends with food) and ends the evening with a meal when we break the fast after sunset on Thursday. In Hebrew, people greet you with Gmar Chatima Tova, which means may you be written in the book of good, however, you can always wish your friends an easy fast or a good holiday.

ART:
I spent my Saturday afternoon walking through the Chelsea Galleries and was able to view and appreciate the following exhibitions:

Vik Muniz at Sikkema Jenkins on West 22nd Street: While I am a big fan of Mr. Muniz work, and I get the ingenuity of perfectly replicating the back of master paintings, I must admit I was not taken by the show (http://www.sikkemajenkinsco.com).

David Lachapelle at Tony Shafrazi Gallery on West 26th Street: Not a disappointment, but I didn't experience the same excitement I had with David's last show. It is a great visual experience as always (http://www.tonyshafrazigallery.com).

Robert Morris at Sonnabend, West 22nd Street: This is one on my "must stop by" galleries. Morris’ show titled “Twilights Mirrors Meteorites" as well as others on exhibition are visually intriguing (http://www.artnet.com).

FALL SHOPING:
A very talented stylist once told me that he gets all of his cashmere at J.Crew, and so I followed his advice and went to explore the cashmere sweaters and knits at J.Crew. The selection was great, with fashion forward colors, and great pricing for the quality.

RESTAURANTS:
My friend Rob Warner introduced me to this charming upscale Mexican restaurant in Chelsea. It is called Crema and is located at 111 West 17th Street between 6th and 7th Ave. The food was great and it was accompanied with very attentive service. There are three dishes that I tried and would recommend (Yes, call me fatso, or in Spanish, gordo!): Bean and cheese casserole (First course), fish empanadas, and carne asada tacos. The tacos and the casserole were fantastic.

CLUBS:
I went out dancing with my friends on Saturday at Mr. Black. The new location at 27 West 24Th (between 5th-6th Ave) reminds me of the old New York, 10 years ago when I moved to the city. The party was fun, crowed and complete with great music. I definitely recommend it!

UPCOMING:
This coming weekend starts the New York Food and Wine Festival. Imported from Miami, and produced by Southern Wine and Spirits’ Lee Schrager, this event should be very interesting for food geeks like me. They will be hosting events like “Chelsea Market After Dark Hosted by Food Networks own Bobby Flay”, “Wine and Dine NYC”, “Times Talks Featuring Alice Waters and Gerry Marzorati, A New Talk: Food”, “Meatpacking Uncorked” and much, much more! I love a nice scent and recently stumbled upon a men and women’s fragrance that I have to talk about. First is the women’s fragrance created by the brilliant Tom Ford –

Before I introduce you to Tammy and Dera, I want to tell you about a wonderful new tea brand that has just blown me away. New York Fashion Week is in full swing and this weekend I was invited to the Mercedes Benz Star Lounge before attending the Rock and Republic show. The show's production was great, very young and energetic, the clothes, mostly in black and whites with a "club girl" vibe rocking “Grease” style stretch pants.

While it was the start of Fashion week it was also the end of an era with the final performance of Rent. My friend and hair stylist to the stars, John Barrett, invited me to join him to view Rent at the final performance. It was a very emotional and touching evening with the current cast in full swing celebrating the amazing relationship this wonderful show has had with every patron. Cast members of previous seasons even attended culminating in them all jumping on stage to close the show. Rent will be missed as it was a landmark production not only for the gay community, but all of New York and the rest of the world!

The performance was followed by the after party at the Piers which was produced by Devin Delano. As one beautiful door closes, another opens!

My executive chef in New York City, Tammy Fox is an obvious expert in fine foods and creating dishes that make a lasting impression. She has a new food trend she would love to share with you. Enjoy!

I recently visited there with my boyfriend and another couple and we had the best time. The service is attentive, the wine is fabulous, and the small “tapas” style dishes are very tasty. I recommend any of Pinotage and the mini “Bunny Chow” with lamb bredie. The South African cuisine consists of a unique blend of African, colonial influences and exotic spices. It feels so great being in Miami at this time of the year because it is amazingly beautiful, although the weather is a bit warm, it is nicer than in New York City. Every beach day is just perfect, no gamble at all. Miami weather almost provides a peaceful serenity connecting you to your core after a long work day, it doesn’t get much better!

All American Summer Party
that took place on July 17th at 12 21:

Last week, I hosted an All American Summer themed Showcase with Karrie Goldberg of Kage Konsulting. We had 300 guests at the new venue,12 21 (the old Cheetah Space). I placed ottomans that were slip covered with blue and white gingham fabric throughout the room, with fully stocked picnic baskets (wine, bread and other foods, newspaper, a flower bouquet, etc.) on each of them, and then placed outdoor lanterns and cat tail arrangements around the room.

Projected on the wall and flat screens were classic all American films including From Here to Eternity and A Place in the Sun.

Pat Caramel (www.caramelnyc.com) provided the lighting that transformed the space into a beautiful All American Picinic. The event was a huge success!!

The symbol above the new logo is the fountain of Love, which is my meditation mantra. Every time I meditate I inhale from the universe and exhale love to the universe! I visualize a natural spring fountain and the ripples of that spring is the symbol of Shiraz, as it is made with love.

I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July weekend! I celebrated the holiday in Southampton spending my time driving to parties with my very stylish friend Greg Yale. One of the parties seemed to me as if it was taken from a Bruce Weber advertisement for Ralph Lauren or J. Crew. Our hosts were super sweet and gracious and I want to thank them for that! Last week I thoroughly enjoyed myself experiencing the Fancy Food Show at the Javitz , and attending a dinner party presenting the wonderful wines of Lombardia, Italy.

This weekend, I helped Rob Coburn with his event and my company Shiraz catered and staffed his party. Although we encountered some refreshing mid-summer rain showers, with Bronson Van Wyck’s beautiful lanterns hanging from the trees and my blue hydrangea arrangements in place, we were ready for a great party! On my way to a meeting to collaborate on a real estate property launch this fall, my eyes caught this fascinating vision of a glass ball(see below), this art creation is exhibited at the Paul Kasmin Gallery on 27th St. The ball is filled with oil and features a motor in the bottom that creates a circular motion combined with the striped walls. During my visit to the Fancy Food Show at the Javitz Center last week, my feet and my diet were exhausted after two hours of walking around and “tasting” many food and beverage items. Here is a selection of items I am going to use in my next season’s menus:

Haloumi Cheese - between feta and "rubber", this Cyprus national cheese is wonderful to grill and serve on a salad or as a side dish by its own. Once it is grilled or heated up it becomes softer and receives the grilling taste to make a great dish.

Carob Honey - from natural bee honey and traditional carob honey, rich of calcium and Vitamin A and B. The carob gives the spread its chocolate like flavors and is great served with yogurt or as a spread or to make brownies out of.

Rose Nectar - not as strong as rose water, this rose "juice" is great to create cocktails with. Below you will find a recipe for a drink I created using Veev.

"The Perfect Pink Rose"

2 0z of Veev Acai Liquer, 4 watermelon balls, 3 mint leaves, 1 oz of simple syrup 1 oz of rose nectar(Sense)

Muddle 3 watermelon balls and 2 mint leaves. Add ice, Veev, simple syrup, and rose nectar. Shake all ingredients. Strain into rock glass filled with ice. Garnish with a notch toothpick skewered with one watermelon ball and one mint leaf.

I will never forget the first time I was aware of Homosexuality. It was back in Israel when I was a kid and I was watching Dynasty. When the handsome Steven Carrington came out of the closet to his dad I realized I too had a secret.

Even after coming out I never thought that I, a gay man, would be able to marry my partner. It still amazes me that the option is getting closer and closer to reality. But to me it seems like a natural progression in our modern times, why in the world has it taken so long???

With fingers crossed it seems like the possibility is right around the corner and hopefully the legislation will sweep the nation!

With that said, HAPPY GAY PRIDE! I long for the day that we don’t have to celebrate and raise awareness of homosexuality and it will simply be a non-issue, although we have come a long way.

Here are seven ways I am celebrating Gay Pride:

1. Commitment Ceremony
I had the honor to plan and cater a commitment ceremony for two lovely ladies.
They both are smart, successful and delightful to work with. They entrusted me to provide them and their guests exceptional design, service and cuisine. The dinner was no small affair with over six courses. It was such a special event manifesting their love, style and commitment to each other.

2. Broadway Bares
Every year I purchase a pile of tickets to the late show of Broadway Bares and invite a bunch of close friends. Broadway Bares is an annual event that combines burlesque and Broadway sparkle featuring sizzling actors from Broadway. All the proceeds go to the MAC AIDS fund.
This year’s theme was Alice in Wonderland so needless to say the costumes and color were eye popping.
Nathan Lane, Julie White, Andrea Martin were OK, but nothing beats Cindy Lauper and her strap on two years ago!

3. Keeping it Sexy
Hey I told you all that I would give a peak at my new Red Carter bathing
suit. TADA! This was taken after my first practice run at water skiing. (THAT is a work in progress)
I love these suits as you know, they don’t sag, have great designs and holds everything in place (most important!)

4. Café Grumpy
Ignore the name, I promise. This gay friendly spot in north Chelsea has the best cappuccino in the city. The texture and flavor is perfect!
And the atmosphere is very low key, so that you can savor your beverage in peace. Now you know my little secret!

5. La Bottega at the Maritime Hotel
Doesn’t everyone always ask you where to go eat outside? Well I always say La Bottega! The main reason is they have such a huge outdoor area you are almost guaranteed a spot! The dishes are always fresh; full of flavor and the staff is cute and attentive. The pasta’s aren’t high on my list of faves but the Fava bean salad; Branzino and grilled jumbo shrimp salad are delightful. Cute eye candy too!

6. The GLBT center "Garden Party" on Monday, June 24th
This event was great fun. It took place on Pier 54 (14th St.) where different food vendors have tables including Jean George, Klee and Suenosopen. There is also an open bar and handsome New York man and women

and Orlando Reece

7. Water Skiing
As you know, I ride a horse better than most, and I am a big time yoga lover but water skiing is NOT for sissies!
I gave it a go for the first time last weekend in the choppy North Haven water and had a hard time even getting up!
I gave it the old college try though and had a great time attempting looking like a super water sports star.

Hellooooo summer! This heat has been a real slap in the face right? But unlike many people in the world, us New Yorkers have to keep working and deal with it. Hot humid heat + working on events = Much needed rest!

I'm one that tends to be active at all times, and then, BAM! I crash. As much as I try to take time for myself and make sure I get enough rest, there are days when it simply doesn’t happen. Here are seven ways I find to relax:

1. Skipping School!
I worked non-stop over the last two weeks and to top it all off this weekend I did a wedding (Which was amazing! I will show you snaps next week). After all of that my fuel gage was at empty. So Monday morning I woke up and hit the snooze button one too many times and called into the office for a much-deserved day off.

After thoroughly recharging my sleep batteries I thought some retail therapy would boost my energy as well. I headed to Paul Smith and found some great cufflinks as a present for my friend, celeb hair stylist John Barrett. He is celebrating his recent American citizenship. I bought him the $$ links that, to me, represent achieving the American Dream. Congrats John!

2. BLT Fish
When I have had a stressful day and no desire to cook at home, I head out for a relaxing dinner. I took my friend and wonderful dermatologist Rob Warner of Park Avenue Dermatology, to dinner at BLT Fish on 17th Street. Rob is a great friend of my forehead and mine. He makes it look soft and smooth 24/7 (yes, I get help!). The third floor dining room is very elegant and the open kitchen adds to an energetic environment. We ordered some great dishes but my favorite was the caramelized scallops, which was a special that night. I paired them with a dry and delectable rose. The service here is always superb and I enjoy coming in, settling down and catching up with great friends.

3. Hawaiian Black Lava Salt
As you can tell, culinary adventures are one of the ways I relax. When I was in Israel I happened upon Hawaiian Black Lava Salt. YUM! It is not as salty as sea salt and its black and crystal-like texture is perfect in little dishes along with a dish of olive oil for dipping breads or dressing salads.

4. Tasting Bars
In my continual effort to live a healthy life, I am always excited about cocktails concocted with freshly squeezed juices and herbs. Many of my clients request tasting bars at their events and I love them for it. Here is how it works:
Instead of offering a full bar you offer a selection of herbs and fresh juices and one or two or three types of liquor (Vodka, Gin, Tequila) as the base. I either give my guests the option of six premixed cocktail options or I let them whip up with their own cocktail recipe. The presentation can be colorful and fun and it is a great way to interact with guests and make the party more memorable.

5. Workout
Many may not believe it, but working out is very relaxing to me! I work out at least five times a week: two with trainers (I use two different trainers as I don't like them getting too comfortable...) where one day we work on upper body and the other, lower body. Two more days are dedicated to cardio and the fifth is my choice. I enjoy pushing myself on the machines and free weights and it is always gratifying to see the results (and when other people notice them too!)

Getting my energies in focus

Each season I like to do a little closet cleaning. One reason is because I live in New York and who has any closet space here? But it is hard to decide what to let go of. That amazing vintage piece I have had for years? Or those flared pants that may come back in style when this skinny jean craze is over. But another reason I clean out is because, as a spiritual person, I am all about ‘out with the old, in with the new.’ I don’t want my possessions to possess me and energies must be altered. Besides, who doesn’t like a Saturday shopping spree at Barneys?!

I am not only cleaning out my literal closet but I am doing the same thing internally at Shiraz NYC: New people, new clients and a new energy to inspire me and help my company grow. It may not be as easy as pitching my favorite early 90's tee shirt but it certainly is rewarding in the long run!

Hmmm… it’s curious how I use the closet as a metaphor.

Here are seven other ways I have put my energy to good use:

1. Many people don’t know this Shai fun fact, but growing up in Israel I competed in jumping and dressage. When I feel nostalgic for my competition days I head out to Bergen County Equestrian Center. Only a 20-minute drive from the city in Leonia, the riding center is a beautiful oasis! I visit whenever I can get out there for take classes.

2. With the temperatures soaring it’s time for Rose. I tasted a perfectly dry and delicious one last weekend: Cuvee du cep d'or, By Cotes de Provence, 2007

3. Who wouldn’t want to work with amazing baubles, bangles, beads and blondes? Van Cleef and Arpels asked my company to work on the launch party of their collaboration with ‘it’ fashion girl Erin Fetherston. Here is a picture from the event, which ended up dazzling!

4. I really had to turn water into wine last week when I was asked to transform a construction site into a chic roof top terrace for a new condominium development at 52 East 4th Street. I turned out perfectly (as I always strive to do) and the sunshine was the icing on a beautiful cake. Actually the cherry on top was that an offer was made on the penthouse, which made news in Metro. Go team!

5. For a wedding I have been working on for quite some time, I wanted something special for the couple. I worked with my kitchen staff and prepared a custom flavored sorbet of lemon and thyme. YUM! It is the most refreshing taste on a hot summer day. Now that my kitchen staff made this I have a list of things I want! 6. With the preppy all American look taking over the runways, I am way ahead of the trend. I have always loved J Crew shorts. But I always have to add my personal flavor to them by taking new pairs to my tailor to shorten the hem and take in the seams for s sexy Shai look.

7. I am sure I am not the only New Yorker who wakes up with their head spinning from all the work, emails and crackberry’s going on in everyday life. When I feel like I have too much on my plate I take some time out in the morning to Meditate. Here is my morning routine:
-I sit comfortably on my sofa making sure every electronic device is off. I either make sure my feet are firmly on the floor or that I am sitting Indian style with my back supported.

-I then close my eyes and start breathing deeply. While getting into my zone I concentrate on parts of my body from head to toe and ask each part of my body to relax.  

- When I feel more at peace I visualize the Fountain of Love. I imagine a natural spring with a fuchsia tint (don’t laugh!) and I take a deep breath from the universe and exhale love into the world. While doing this I think positive thoughts such as loving myself, that I am capable of anything and general upbeat ideas.

- After about 30 minutes my mind is at ease, I am refreshed and ready to turn on my Blackberry and face another amazing day!

Hamptons Retreat!

Hooray for the Hamptons! I officially kicked off the summer season by spending the long weekend in one of my favorites destinations. While heading back to the city on Monday I thought of my seven things from my weekend away:

1. What better way to kick off Memorial Day weekend and perhaps a great date (I'm not saying that I had one, but maybe I did and maybe it was great), than with a wonderful bottle of wine? Stags Leap 2005 Napa Valley Merlot is smoky, rich and begs for another sip.

2. The opening of my good friend Shawn Bell’s, Bellhaus was an incredible event. My company planned and catered the event, and my other company, Michael Rogers PR, did the PR for it. The store is beautifully styled and Shawn did a wonderful job curating it. Celebrities including Kelly Ripa and Michael Clinton turned out to celebrate the opening with Shawn. The highlight was when Kelly Ripa gave me a kiss. Swoon! She is a gorgeous and amusing in person as she is on TV and Mark is so handsome, they were a pleasure to work with.

3. It was great to catch up with my friend Greg Yale. Besides being one of the most stylish people I know he is also a hugely successful landscape lighting designer based in Southampton but with clients around the world. All of his homes I have seen (four in seven years) remind me of a grand old Hollywood movie set. www.gregyale.com

4. After my hectic week of work in the city (numerous events and a lot of transition in my company, all good!), another highlight was to be ensconced in nature for the weekend. I was lucky enough to spend some time at a cottage Greg Yale designed on Shinecok Bay. Waking up amidst thick foliage and birds chirping was exactly what this businessman needed to recharge my batteries and have some time to reflect. Here are some images of geese that were swimming across from Greg's property.

5. A trip to the beach isn’t complete without sexy swim trunks! Red Carter makes my favorite trunks. I’ll post some images this summer of me and my new suits, promise!

6. One of my secret tricks of the trade is topping plants with coffee beans at events. Just spread some on top of your plants at your next soiree or even in your garden (like I did at my office) and the results are innovative and modern.

Sorry I have been MIA on the blog front this week, I just got back from a wonderful weekend in Miami! I zipped around town and to the beach on my new old-school styled Vespa (white with brown leather seats-so chic) When I arrived back in New York I had to hit the ground running since I was finalizing some details for a Pier 1 editor’s day event that my company produced last Wednesday.

Pier 1 presented an extended line of epicurean items they will have in stores this coming fall. The products ranged from hearty flavored olive oils to bon-bons and cookie frosting for the holidays.

For this week’s hot list, I chose six elements that made this event a success. The seventh is a special surprise featuring a well-known designer!

1. Go with the flow

Often event planners come to a space with a notion that they are going to transform the space, however, many times the space is just great as it is.

Also, when working with the existing elements you can keep the budget low for your client and work with an existing synergy. For example, instead of going with Pier 1 Brand colors as the base, I used the Glass house space colors as a base in creating product vignettes and let the product "shine" with its colorful packaging and added the branding in GOBO (Logo projected through lighting)

2. Play a little

I had a few hours to "play" with the product to create the display (I felt like a kid in a candy shop!) and that is how it should be. Give yourself time to play work with your displays. If you put too much thought in the creative process you eliminate the connection to the "source". It is like playing Tetris, finding the right pieces that work.

3. Understand how the mind works

When designing a space for an editor’s event and presenting product you have to understand that editors are there to garner quick facts and information. Therefore people like a familiar structure, especially in our over exposed world, and you set the presentation up in that way. Then editors will be able to retain more information. With this in mind I created a layout that was easy to follow and worked easily in that space

4. Whimsy

When displaying a product, I always try to display it in a whimsical way. For example: I wanted to create four stations: Tuscan food store (Oils, breads, cheese, tapanades), a candy store, a bar station and a coffee and tea station.

With the Tuscan and Candy displays I really wanted to pack a punch! I recreated an old Florentine food store for the former and an over the top, color saturated theme for the latter. The editors felt like kids again touching and smelling the candy.

5. Got talent?

Hiring a celebrity to host is always a good draw. Rocco Di Spiritto worked with us on this event and editors appreciated having someone so handsome to show them around!

6.Give more

I sure hope the editors that attended have a trainer, because the gift bags were filled with great products from the Pier 1 Epicurean line: biscotti, chocolates, oils, cooking books, flavored popcorn, and more.

7. I was fortunate enough to spend Sunday afternoon with the talented Christian Siriano (of Project Runway fame) at the ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair). If you are into design, especially contemporary, you will get sensory overload from seeing all the new products and designs. For me it was a super special experience as I was walking the show with a hot tranny mess!

I also had the chance to a say hello to a bevy of leading industry people like the talented and so funny Jamie Drake, event designer David stark, and some of Bravo's Top designers.

Mazel Tov Shiraz NYC!

This year I am celebrating seven years in the event planning business! I can’t believe it all started back in 2001. The people I have met, worked with and garnered relationships with have all been amazing and I am so lucky to have grown as fast as I have. A huge thanks to my teams in NYC and Miami!

Seven is a magical number in many cultures so to celebrate the number I have decided to feature seven things I fancy each week on the blog.

Lets get this party started:

1. Another reason to celebrate is that my homeland, Israel, turned 60 this week. Whenever I get homesick for mom’s cooking or a night out in Tel Aviv I head to these spots for a slice of regional cuisine. First stop is The Hummus Place on St. Marks. To start my evening off I order hummus with warm fava beans and a hard-boiled egg accompanied by a frozen mint lemonade (Yum!) or an Arak Mojito (Arak is an Annis Liquor). OK so the Mojito isn’t all that Israeli but it sure is refreshing after a long day at the office. Next stop is Café Mogador where I indulge in a super savory chicken tagine with couscous. Friends are always secretly excited when I am feeling homesick because they know we are going to have an appetizing night on the town. Once I finish up at Mogador I beeline across the street to Milk & Honey, an Israeli grocery store. Here I pick up a Milky, a chocolate pudding with whipped cream that I grew up loving for snack time after school.

2. One thing is for sure, party planners are in the business for a reason- we love to party! When I am getting ready to go out I put on Leona Lewis' "Spirit" and sing in the shower. Her vocals are incredible and "Bleeding in Love" and "I will be" are my top picks off the album.

3. The creative aspect of planning events and food is obviously a highlight for me. Creating great invitations whets everyone’s appetite for an exciting event. Recently for an editorial preview I organized for Pier 1 Imports (they launched a new extended epicurean line) we hand delivered invitations in a beautiful box that contained a bar of specialty chocolate from the new line as well as the invitation. Editor’s loved the idea and it didn’t hurt that it was delivered by a hunky male model.

4. Summer is around the corner and I am itching to hang up the jeans and step out in some shorts. Theory has some great looking tailored shorts in khaki and gingham that are lightweight and fit me to a T.

5. When I am working in Miami my new fave spot is The Pool and Spa at the Miami Standard. After wrapping up work or an event I take a dip in the pool looking over the bay and then head into the Hamam for a steam and massage. Heaven! Andre Balaz certainly knows a thing or two about relaxing. Once I am almost reaching nirvana I order dinner poolside (dress code: Bathing Suit!) and sip a rose as the sun sets. 6. When escaping the city this summer I will be buying all of my Hamptons host gifts at Bellhaus. The new lifestyle store in Wainscot is opening next week (perfect for Memorial Day) and is a treasure trove of designer clothing, accessories, home furnishings and gifts. http://www.bellhaus.net/

A Few of My Favorite Things...

May is a month to celebrate births. My brother and his wife had their third child and seven years ago, I gave birth to my first company, Shiraz NYC. I am proud to say "my child" has grown to be a strong member of the New York creative community. But, any parent will tell you, it is not always easy and sometimes you need a little help.

Here are seven things that have contributed to seven years of my business success:

1. The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, got me through some difficult moments of doubt.

2. My massage therapist, Jeff Saxe (646-251-3081); his magical hands relieved some major stress and allowed me to relax and focus.

3. Icebox Cake from Billy's Bakery. Do I really need to explain?

4. My best friend and business partner, Yaniv Cohen; makes me laugh and helped me build a wonderful event company in South Florida (www.shirazfl.com).

5. My friend, the very talented Interior Designer, Vicente Wolf (www.vicentewolfassociates.com); he taught me about the luxury lifestyle and how to appreciate and design beautiful environments.

6. The beach in Miami or anywhere warm for that matter.

Spring "Elder" flowers

One of the best things about being in New York is experiencing Springtime. This time of year, the trees are in bloom and everything seems so sexy, however, that also means that soon enough I will have to slip into my bathing suit and that makes me very aware of my diet. I'm one of those guys that always feels fat and out of shape, despite my five day workout schedule. With that in mind, I do try keeping an eye on my diet monitoring what I am taking in.

This season allows for me to get creative drinking fresh fruit cocktails through the summer. While cocktails contain a lot of sugar and therefore a high calorie count, I try to limit my consumption. I discovered Elderflower juice in the past year. Elderflower juice can be a great ingredient to add to a drink instead of Triple Sec in Cosmos and Margaritas! Then there is St. Germain, which is a liquor made of the European elderflower that has a fantastic flavor. St. Germain is very sweet (many calories) but if used in the right quantity and balanced with other
mixers and served very cold, your drink will be a refreshing flavor stimulation. I wanted to share with you a recipe for a drink I created using St. Germain and freshly squeezed orange juice called Golden Spring. ENJOY!

Golden Spring
1 oz. St. Germain,
2 oz. Fresh squeezed OJ
2 oz. Moet Chandon, White star
1 halved Orange wheel

Fill a double rocks glass with ice.
Pour in the St. Germain, followed by the Orange Juice.
Top it off with White star.
Garnish with an orange wheel.

One of the most exciting things about this trip to Israel with my friends was that it was a culinary delight. All of our meals were wonderful, especially a beautiful dinner at Suzanna located right outside of the Suzanne Dalal Dance Center in Tel Aviv. The food was rich with local flavors and the restaurant’s simple design aesthetic had a casual yet sophisticated feel. My German friend Frank says Suzanna served ‘deli food’, but a deli perhaps if only Jean George had opened one! Some of the other dining highlights of my trip were the sweet potato mousse latkes with chive yogurt sauce at Orna and Ella on the trendy Shenkin Street, jumbo shrimp wrapped with smoked duck breast in a red wine sauce at Goocha on Dizingof Street, and the Yemeni bone marrow soup at Gafla in Rehovot. All and all the flavor stimulation of our dining experiences were superb! New York chefs and foodies should get a ticket to Israel immediately! I'm sure you will enjoy it and possibly learn a thing or two about the Israeli art of cuisine.

The other great thing about heading to Israel with my New York friends was that it invoked many childhood memories. The youthful visions I had of Israel have always been that of a slight haze casting a yellowish tone on the pretty yet less developed country. Today this slight haze still exists casting a glaze over the country, providing inspiration for many brilliant minds in this country manifesting great talent. This ultimately reminded me of our connection to the infinite source.

As my journey ends, I will head back to the states where I will begin celebrating the 7th anniversary of my company, sharing with you memories of the past and tips for the future!

Unmistakably Tel Aviv...

Stepping out of the beautifully designed Ben Gurion terminal in Tel Aviv, I was greeted with the most wonderful scent of orange blossom...unmistakable and delicious. Spring in Israel is a blessing for your senses. With every step you take, you are treated to the overwhelming scent of great blossoms and the beautiful sight of vibrant greenery...quite different from the streets of New York.

Tel Aviv like New York is a very modern and hip city, blending the vibes of Miami and NYC together to create a place that is unbelievable fun for anyone who visits. You can’t help but feel the magnetic energy while you walk safely in the streets at 3 am and see people still sitting out on the side walks of coffee shops chatting.

One of the best things about Tel Aviv are the restaurants. Some of the restaurants that I have visited already are well designed and touched with that whimsical Israeli style that is fresh and unique to this land. Two of my favorite places that I would recommend for anyone coming to Israel are:

Herbert Samuel (6 Koifman St. +972-3-5166516)
The most beautifully presented dishes that were all very creative and delicious including their Tuna Sashimi with beets and their filet of beef! The restaurant is contemporary in its design and includes a major natural wood element.

Messa, Ha'arba'a (19 st. +972-3-685-6859)
This flow and energy of this place was brilliant, combining whites with earthy tones, draping the walls and seating areas with beautiful shades of white. The food fit the atmosphere being inventive persuading the guest to take a delightful chance enjoying each moment of the fois gras presented on a Belgium waffle.

In The Beginning...

After the development of Shiraz NYC, Shiraz FL, and the most recent partnership with Michael Rogers PR, many friends and colleagues began telling me the next thing I should create is a blog. I realized that it would be very important for me to make sure that I begin this blog when I begin my journey back to Israel. The timing is symbolic as I approach the seventh anniversary of being in business while Israel celebrates their 60th anniversary. Israel is where my life started and I felt that this would be the perfect jumping off point for me to allow my readers to get a clear glimpse into my past and how that shapes my present and my view of the future. As I embark on this two week trip with friends, I will write to you all about the choices that I have made and how I came about making them, also providing one with an insight into how I edit my life. The key element of this ongoing blog will be to make my vision accessible to everyone.
Traveling back to Israel is an important thing for me to do. I will have the luxury of traveling with great friends introducing them to Tel Aviv, the beautiful Mediterranean coasted city and Petra among other places. I will be guiding you along this journey of ours giving you an idea of our experiences ranging from our time on the eleven hour flight to the evenings at the gorgeous apartment five minutes from the beach to the place where I was born thirty three years ago. I finished three years in the Israel Army before becoming accepted into Technion, the MIT equivalent. I began on a path very different than the one I am on today, heading into medical school; yes to become another Jewish Doctor!! Eventually my goals changed, I moved to Manhattan nine years ago where I began traveling down the road I am currently on now.
I will be guiding you throughout this blogging process with the challenges that I face in creating some of the most spectacular events and how to recreate them on your own. Follow me along the process of designing my new apartment giving you a glimpse into my world, providing you with an insight into what I do and how to bring it into your life making it your own. I will also keep you a float on the best home design furnishings, restaurants, travel destinations and more that I find worth sharing, allowing you to see the beauty in all that I see.
