Arsenault wanted to know how he could help the team become more competitive.

That conversation led to the creation of the Champions Club in 2009. Since then, the club has held four dinner events that have raised $250,000 to allow Concordia’s football program to recruit the best student-athletes and build a stronger program on the field — and help students in the classroom.

“The main goal of the club is to raise money for student-athlete scholarships and bursaries,” says Arsenault. “I greatly appreciate the dedication it takes to be a student-athlete.”

For its fifth fundraiser, the Champions Club is organizing a Golf & Greet event at the prestigious Beaconsfield Golf Club in Pointe Claire, Que. Filmmaking greats who have attended the festival include the late British maverick Ken Russell, director John Landis of Blues Brothers fame, and Japanese director and screenwriter Kiyoshi Kurosawa, best known for his horror flicks.

Also having premiered at Fantasia are successful alumni filmmakers Erik Canuel, director of Canadian cinema sensation Bon Cop, Bad Cop, and Oscar-nominated director Kim Nguyen, who debuted Truffe at the festival.

“We’re truly impressed by the quality of work and accomplishments of Concordia cinema graduates. To be associated with a university with so many people who are passionate about film and filmmaking is an incredible asset for our festival,” says Corbeil.

“Fantasia's generous recognition ensures the important relationship between the festival and Concordia will continue to grow,” says Daniel Cross, chair, associate professor and alumnus of the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, and co-founder of Montreal’s EyeSteelFilm. “The festival provides our students with invaluable real-world experience and exposure in their pursuit of excellence.”

Founded in 1996, the Fantasia International Film Festival is one of Canada’s most popular film festivals. Concordia’s teaching and research contributes to our city, country, world by adding knowledge, making us safer and healthier, improving our quality of life.

That’s why I gladly donated to my alma maters even before I arrived at Concordia in 1996. Since then, I’ve contributed a modest portion of my salary to the university through payroll deduction.

I come from a tradition in which there is an expectation that everyone should give back to the community. The assumption is that we’re all in it together, a large family. And of course I’m going to lend support to my extended family. I feel the same about Concordia and our team.

That doesn’t make me special in these parts — Advancement and Alumni Relations (AAR) — because literally everyone here gives to the Community Campaign.

I believe the AAR folks willingly contribute because they see a direct line between their donations and quality university education. We witness how and where the funds are used and understand the value of the act of giving to Concordia.

When I was a student — many years ago — a scholarship allowed me to buy my first, much-needed personal computer. In my decade-and-a-half here, I’ve met countless students who’ve expressed, often emotionally, their sincere gratitude for having received similar awards that helped them succeed at university.

Whether backing students in financial need, encouraging outstanding scholarship, attracting top professors, financing vital research, contributing to the libraries or athletics, among other essential areas, each of our contributions has an impact.

I’m proud to work at Concordia for those same reasons. I’m able to support its scholarly, research and community missions through my day job. Yet that alone is not enough.

That’s why I agreed to appear on posters you may have seen around campus and in the new video to help promote the 2013 Community Campaign. That’s why I participate in the Concordia Mentor Program. That’s why I choose to donate.

The question isn’t, why give?

It’s, why not give? For me, the answer is simple: There is no reason not to give. It’s our community and our choice.

Howard Bokser, MBA 85, is managing editor of Concordia University Magazine.

Related links:
• Community Campaign
• Concordia University Magazine

But instead of cashing it in, the young philanthropist paid his winnings forward and created a new academic award.

“My school fees are paid and I don’t need to buy a laptop right now, so I decided to use the money to create a scholarship,” says Saleh, who has also benefitted from bursaries to help make ends meet during his time at Concordia.

Saleh is a teaching assistant and a member of the Concordia Institute of Aerospace Design and Innovation. Also heavily involved in extra-curricular life at Concordia, he is a past president of the Concordia chapter of Engineers Without Borders and is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and the Engineering and Computer Science Association.

“In the past few years at Concordia, I was offered a lot of opportunities to participate in student societies, where I gained a lot of knowledge, developed my interpersonal skills and picked up advice for the future.
The Concordia community of faculty members, staff and retirees has once again proven that their commitment to the university extends past their work life. Nearly 100 guests celebrated the $309,000 raised during Concordia’s 2010-11 Community Campaign.

The annual donor recognition event was held on June 9 in the Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts Integrated Complex. The funds raised will ensure that students can access the best possible education, either by financing their studies or purchasing equipment for university facilities.

Bernice Goldsmith, Assistant Professor Emeritus in the General Studies Unit (now called the Centre for Engineering in Society) and campaign co-chair, announced that this year’s campaign — comprising annual gifts from members of the internal community and donations to the Shuffle — represents a 38 per cent participation rate.

Goldsmith and her co-chair, Marlene Gross, Manager of Services for New Students and the Student Success Program in Counselling and Development, thanked their fellow Campaign Advisory Committee members: Jang Kwon, Sheelah O’Neill, Nancy Marrelli and Alex Konyari. They also spoke of how proud they are to show students that they care about their institution and that their efforts support student success.

2010-11 Community Campaign co-chairs Bernice Goldsmith (left) and Marlene Gross flank Concordia President Frederick Lowy at the Community Campaign donor recognition event on June 9. | Photo by Ryan Blau/PBL Photography

President Frederick Lowy thanked all those who participated in the campaign and thereby made an outstanding contribution to the lives of students. Dominique McCaughey, acting vice-president of Advancement and Alumni Relations, said she appreciated community members’ support for the university, and added that their donations will help future generations of students realize their goals.

Cinzia Miscio, Administrator of Operations and Planning in the Office of the Vice-President, Research and Graduate Studies, spoke on behalf of the community. Miscio holds a Concordia BA and MA and was a scholarship recipient. Despite having reached the challenging goal of $185,000 during a shorter campaign period, pledges are still coming. The tightly focused campaign lasted only one month compared to the usual two months.

More than $14,000 was raised with raffles, bake sales, pasta lunches and other creative fundraising events. This includes close to $4,000 raised at one pasta lunch, easily the most raised at such an event, with almost 400 participants, the highest turnout ever. Campaign Chair Bram Freedman is “particularly pleased that we have increased our participation rate to 14%, up from 11% last year.”

Freedman, who is also Vice-President, External Relations and Secretary-General at the university, has experience in fundraising campaigns. During a period away from Concordia, he spent fourand- a-half years as Chief Operating Officer and Director of External Relations at Federation Combined Jewish Appeal. He is so delighted with everyone’s efforts during his first year as Campaign Chair that he says, “We’re going to aim even higher next year.”

The Centraide of Greater Montreal campaign total will be announced December 15. The goal for this year is $55.3 million.

All three lunches allowed staff and faculty to get together, share a meal and support the cause.

This last lunch was also the opportunity to announce the raffle winners: Peter Lyne is thrilled to have won an iPad and Cinzia Miscio won a 46-inch Toshiba LCD television. A grand prize draw was held November 26 to mark the closing of the campaign. The lucky winner of a 40-inch Toshiba LCD television was Antonio Petrozza. The complete list of prize winners can be seen on the Centraide site under Winners’ Circle.

A number of groups and departments rose to the challenge of supporting Centraide by holding special events on campus, the first of which was a sale of pumpkins decorated by Concordia’s Fine Arts students on October 28. They raised an impressive $294.58.

University Communications Services held several internal fundraisers, including treats on a goody cart for sale every Friday afternoon and a bagel day, selling bagels and cream cheese. They also held a bake sale on November 24 in the Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts Integrated Complex lobby. These events raised $381.55.

The John Molson School of Business raised $601.29 selling samosas and coffee in the lobby of the Molson Building on November 23. "The samosa sale was a great idea and a delicious way for students, staff and faculty to help a great organization like Centraide. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this initiative," said Karim Boulos, Executive Director of External Affairs for the Faculty.

But the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science took the cake with their bake sale, organized by Caroline Clayton, Olga Soares and Zineb Bencheikh. They raised $1 262.33 with the sale and a raffle of their own on November 22. Clayton’s enthusiasm shone through when she said, “the Centraide bake sale has really been a long-running initiative of the Faculty that has served the inner community with the opportunity to purchase delightful, home-baked treats and the external community with the funds raised!”

Get this year’s campaign results in the December 6 issue of the Journal, and find out what other records were broken.

Special thanks to Ambassadors

Freedman and the committee members would like to give special thanks to the Centraide Ambassadors, representatives from various departments and areas assigned the task of raising awareness across both campuses. Some volunteered at events, others held their own, selling raffle tickets and making personal pleas to friends and colleagues.

Related links:
• Winners’ Circle
• Read more about the JMSB samosa sale
• Read more about the ENCS bake sale and see pictures
• Concordia’s Centraide campaign
• Contact the committee
