The Leonard and Bina Ellen Art Gallery presents Ignition, an annual exhibition highlighting artworks by graduate students from Concordia University’s Studio Arts and Humanities programs. For this ninth edition, curators jake moore and Michèle Thériault chose artists exploring a wide array of topics through an equally wide range of media—from painting, sculpture, and embroidery to photography, video, and installation.

Dayna Danger, Derby Girls, 2011. Chromogenic print. | Photo courtesy of the artist.

Eugénie Cliche creates unconventional scenarios that walk the line between playful and disturbing in what she terms photobroderies where she embroiders over Photoshopped digital images of family members. In her photographic series, Bad Girls, Dayna Danger reworks archetypal female figures often linked to scandal and shame as empowered protagonists who boldly embrace their sexuality and stray from society’s mores. Rosika Desnoyers delves into the material history of needlepoint, looking at this often disregarded amateur art form that was once widely practiced by many European women.

Jinyoung Kim photographs her father’s return to South Korea after over a decade’s absence, posing him against various backdrops that subtly hint at the intensity of the experience. In his multifaceted project Kaval, Bogdan Stoica mines the traditional Eastern European flute as a complex metaphor for immigrant experience and cultural identity in flux.

Drawing from artist Robert Smithson’s text, “A Tour of the Monuments of Passaic, New Jersey,” about a trip taken from Manhattan to the suburbs in 1966, David Butler uses Google Street View to retrace this iconic voyage, morphing elements of time and space. Using the gaze as a focal point in her video, Outlook, Sandra Smirle explores the impact of mediated reality in an era of constant surveillance.

Andrea Szilasi juxtaposes photographs of weight-training equipment with paintings cut and pasted from Western art history books, generating unexpected environments from these differing aesthetics and forms. Véronique Chagnon-Côté builds on the landscape painting genre, depicting lush gardens and foliage that draw attention to the human desire to control and contain the natural world.

What: Meet the artists
When: Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at 4:30 p.m.

What: Opening reception
When: Wednesday, May 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

What: Exhibition IGNITION 9
When: Thursday, May 2 to Saturday, June 8

All events are held at the Ellen Art Gallery:
Room LB-165, J.W. She was inspired by the work of physicist Ronald L. Mallett and his theories of time-travel based on laser technology – in a sense using light as a time machine. For this project, she worked with imagery that provokes notions of traveling (in time and space) and the fluidity of place, using shadow as a stand-in for these notions.

“Shadows provide an opportunity for illusion, trickery and exploring perception as an integral part of understanding,” she writes. “It is proof that not all meaning can be created or displayed in light and indicates the absolute consistency of change and the impossibility of fixed meaning.”

Wickramasinghe is the 2011 Concordia University recipient of the Stephen and Claudine Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art. The exhibition and publication of her catalogue The Book of Light and Shadows mark the conclusion of her two-year fellowship term.

The vitrines will show snap,crack,pop...(less about meaning than being) from experimental filmmaker and Concordia faculty member Richard Kerr. It will consist of several of his signature works from the series motion picture weavings as well as a new body of projections coupled with paint-based objects. This material iteration of the “spinning camera” technique Kerr created to present hypnotic and deeply formal concerns evoke Marcel Duchamp’s rotary reliefs and early machinist modernists like Jean Tinguely and his metamechanics.

Richard Kerr, video still, Staggered Loops, 2012

The exhibition and a conversation with Pittsburgh-based filmmaker, curator and writer Brett Kashmere, will unpack Kerr’s particular path of constant production, described by Kashmere as a mix of aesthetic intensity/energy and patient observation/restraint that results in a fusion of abstraction and documentary styles.

Exhibition: Monday, April 15, to Thursday, May 24, 2013

Vernissage: Thursday, April 18, 2013, 5 to 7 p.m.

Catalogue launch: Thursday, May 9, 2013, at 4:30 p.m.

Conversation, Brett Kashmere with Richard Kerr: Thursday, May 16, 2013 (location to be confirmed)

Where: FOFA Gallery, Room EV 1.715, Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts Integrated Complex, Sir George Williams Campus (1515 Ste-Catherine St. W.)

Admission is free of charge and everyone is welcome.

Related links:
• FOFA Gallery
• Department of Studio Arts
• Pavitra Wickramasinghe’s website
• Richard Kerr’s faculty profile (Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema)
• Richard Kerr’s website
