Silverfish and firebrats are very fast runners, so they are often seen when their hiding places are disturbed. The presence of silverfish or firebrats indicates too much moisture in the area.</p> <h2>When controlling silverfish and firebrats, keep these important tips in mind:</h2> <ul> <li>Identifying the pest will narrow down the areas to inspect. Now they are considered an invasive species in the southern states from Virginia to New Mexico, as well as California and Puerto Rico. Fire ants are extremely aggressive when bothered, and they may sting repeatedly. </p> <h2>When controlling silverfish and firebrats, keep these important tips in mind:</h2> <ul> <li>Regularly empty outside trash cans near buildings and in parks to keep fire ants from finding food. <li>Keep plants trimmed away from buildings to keep fire ants from using the plants as a bridge to the building. <li>Fire ants like greasy and oily foods, especially cat and dog foods. They are often found in homes and on the sunny exterior sides of buildings. During the spring and summer, boxelder bugs feed and reproduce on female (seed-bearing) box elder trees. As winter approaches, boxelder bugs seek out shelter from the cold. They can fly up to two miles to find a suitable location in tree stumps, under debris, or within homes. There they remain mostly inactive until the early spring when temperatures begin to rise. </p> <h2>When controlling boxelder bugs, keep these important tips in mind:</h2> <ul> <li>Boxelder bugs can sometimes be confused with other similar looking insects. Consider contacting your <a href='http://npic.orst.edu/pest/countyext.htm'>Cooperative Extension Service</a> for proper identification. <li>If boxelder bugs are inside your home, consider vacuuming them up and disposing of the bag promptly.
