After a long hiatus, NPNY Radio returns! In this episode, Derek Kelly, Amil Dave, Andrew Stanger, and Zaheer Ali revisit Prince’s pop classic double-album “1999.” Although “Purple Rain” remains Prince’s best selling release to date, “1999”—released two years before—signaled the maturation of his unique “Minneapolis” sound and served as his breakthrough into the pop charts, radio, and music video. The NPNY crew gives a track-by-track breakdown of the album’s music and lyrics, examining its geopolitical, racial, gender, sexual and cultural themes. What is the end of “Lady Cab Driver” really about? Where did the baby sample on “Delirious” come from? What Hollywood movies were the first to reference the album?
