Graduation Location Reminder

Northfield High School will host commencement exercises for the class of 2012 at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 3, at Memorial Field. In the case of inclement weather, graduation will be moved to the high school gymnasium. If the ceremony is moved indoors, it will also be shown via closed-circuit TV in the high school auditorium for overflow guests. Seating is general admission for both locations. Parents can listen to KYMN Radio and check email for weather related announcements and location changes.

Transformational Technology Public Information Meeting

Northfield Public Schools will hold a public information session regarding the progress of the district’s transformational technology proposal at 6 p.m. on June 7 in the Northfield High School auditorium. The proposal considers the use of tablet computers by teachers and students.

The agenda will include presentations about the vision of the use of tablet computers by students and teachers, the potential implementation process, the cost of the project, and the method being considered to fund the implementation district-wide. The public will also be able to ask questions about the proposal. Project ABLE Camp Begins June 11

Project ABLE Youth Summer Camp is more than just an opportunity for fun-filled activities. While campers enjoy archery, crafts, fishing and overnight trips, they also engage in personal growth and development opportunities. Campers who wish to participate in service initiatives are guided in exploring positive volunteer experiences within the community.

Youth Summer Camp is available to all students from Northfield and Faribault, with or without disabilities, who are between the ages of 14 and 23. Camp runs from noon to 3 p.m., June 11 to July 13. Registration fees are $135 for the full season or $40 per week, and scholarships are available. Call Northfield Public Schools Community Services at 507.664.3649 for more information. Maroon and Gold Athletic Reception

The 25th annual Maroon and Gold Athletic Reception will be held on Tuesday, May 22, at the Northfield Middle School. As the event sponsor, the Northfield Booster Club will kick off the evening with a punch bowl reception at 6:15 p.m. with cake and coffee. The awards ceremony will begin at 7 p.m.

The event recognizes the many accomplishments of Raider athletes during the year. Special honors will include: the Raider Spirit Award, the 12 Season Athlete Award, the Outstanding Senior Athlete Award, and MVP awards for fall and winter sports. All senior athletes and state tournament participants will be recognized, and several coaches will be honored.

In addition, four former Northfield High School athletes and one coach will be inducted into the NHS Athletic Hall of Fame. The Northfield Booster Club Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Dale Ness, recognizing his contributions to the Northfield High School athletic program and the community.

Tickets for the reception can be purchased for $5 at the Northfield High School Activities Office or at the reception. Senior athletes, MVPs and state tournament participants will be given complimentary tickets as guests of the booster club.

New Director of Teaching and Learning

Northfield Public Schools is pleased to announce that the district has hired Mary Hanson, currently principal at Madelia Elementary School, as the new director of teaching and learning beginning July 1, 2012.

Hanson brings a wealth of experience, including 13 years as a building principal and 16 years as a classroom teacher. She was recently selected as one of three finalists for the National Distinguished Principal award by the Minnesota Elementary School Principals Association (MESPA). Her experience includes work with Professional Learning Communities, Response to Intervention (RTI), curriculum revision and professional development.

Hanson said she is excited to join the district.

“I am looking forward to getting to know the people in Northfield Public Schools and to getting the Response to Intervention process movng forward. Northfield Public Schools has a great process in place already. The challenge will be coordinating all of the different schools because the process will look different at each school.”

Northfield High School Ranked Among Top 5% in the Country

Northfield High School has been listed among the top high schools in the state and nation in a recent rating of high schools conducted by U.S. News and World Report. Almost 22,000 high schools in the United States including 786 high schools in Minnesota were reviewed by the national news magazine. Factors such as standardized test results, performance on advanced placement tests and graduation rates are used to determine the annual ranking.

In the U.S. News Best High Schools 2012 rankings, Minnesota has 7 gold medal schools and 42 silver medal schools. Northfield High School ranked 27th in the state and received a silver medal rating. Northfield High School’s ranking places it in the top 4% of the total 786 Minnesota high schools that were reviewed. Students and Alumnus Honored

Students and a distinguished alumnus were honored last Sunday at the annual NHS Distinguished Alumni & Academic Awards Program, held at the Northfield Middle School. David Legvold, a 1959 Northfield High School graduate, was recognized for his contribution to society as a farmer, teacher and environmentalist.

Legvold’s two sons, Mark and Michael, introduced their dad to those in attendance.

In addition, juniors and seniors who qualified to receive an academic letter (for a 3.5 GPA or higher) were honored for their achievements.

Finally, over $70,000 in scholarship money was distributed to members of our senior class. Community members and organizations sponsor a number of scholarships that recognize selected seniors not only for their academic merit, but also for their commitment to service, athletic ability and outstanding citizenship.

PLUS Program Celebration

Almost 300 students and family members attended the year-end event for the PLUS program on April 26. This year, more than 180 students participated in the afterschool program at the three elementary schools and middle school. The celebration included pizza and cotton candy, break-dancing entertainers, and activities such as face painting and kickball. The PLUS program is coordinated by Student Services to boost the success of students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade and prevent school dropout. Community Services staff provide recreation programming support.

GED Testing Available May 17

GED testing will be offered from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, through Northfield Public Schools Community Services. Testing is held at the Northfield Community Resource Center (NCRC 2nd floor), 1651 Jefferson Parkway. Pre-registration is required and testing costs $120.

Testers must be 19 years of age or older and must have a valid MN ID. Individuals under the age of 19 are eligible to apply for an age waiver after taking classes through Dakota Prairie ABE. GED testing is sponsored by Dakota Prairie ABE, a partner program of Community Services. Call 507.664.3764 or 651.463.5085 to register or for more information about the GED.
