Project ABLE Camp Begins June 11

Project ABLE Youth Summer Camp is more than just an opportunity for fun-filled activities. While campers enjoy archery, crafts, fishing and overnight trips, they also engage in personal growth and development opportunities. Campers who wish to participate in service initiatives are guided in exploring positive volunteer experiences within the community.

Youth Summer Camp is available to all students from Northfield and Faribault, with or without disabilities, who are between the ages of 14 and 23. Camp runs from noon to 3 p.m., June 11 to July 13. Registration fees are $135 for the full season or $40 per week, and scholarships are available. Call Northfield Public Schools Community Services at 507.664.3649 for more information. PLUS Program Celebration

Almost 300 students and family members attended the year-end event for the PLUS program on April 26. This year, more than 180 students participated in the afterschool program at the three elementary schools and middle school. The celebration included pizza and cotton candy, break-dancing entertainers, and activities such as face painting and kickball. The PLUS program is coordinated by Student Services to boost the success of students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade and prevent school dropout. Community Services staff provide recreation programming support.

GED Testing Available May 17

GED testing will be offered from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, through Northfield Public Schools Community Services. Testing is held at the Northfield Community Resource Center (NCRC 2nd floor), 1651 Jefferson Parkway. Pre-registration is required and testing costs $120.

Testers must be 19 years of age or older and must have a valid MN ID. Individuals under the age of 19 are eligible to apply for an age waiver after taking classes through Dakota Prairie ABE. GED testing is sponsored by Dakota Prairie ABE, a partner program of Community Services. Call 507.664.3764 or 651.463.5085 to register or for more information about the GED.

Northfield Public Schools Community Services includes recreation and enrichment programming, Early Childhood Family Education, driver education, KidVentures, EarlyVentures Learning Center, Connected Kids, Middle School Youth Center, Hand-in-Hand Preschool, Adult Basic Education and Project ABLE.

Truck and Tractor Night May 7

Explore police and fire vehicles, heavy equipment and even a race car at this event, from 6:15 – 7:45 p.m. on May 7 in the Northfield Community Resource Center parking lot.

Northfield Public Schools Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) offers this event free to the public, and registration is not required.

Drivers will be on hand to answer questions.

The event will be rescheduled to May 10 in the case of inclement weather. Call 507.664.3750 with questions.

SummerVentures Parent Orientation

Check out the Community Services SummerVentures day camp program at parent orientation from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on April 17. There will be registration materials and pool pass information available at Longfellow School room 102. Child care will be available and parents can enter a drawing to win a free week of camp.

SummerVentures offers kids the chance to make the most out of their summer in a safe environment with friendly, caring and experienced staff. The program is for youth entering grades 1 through 7.

This summer we have fun-filled camps such as “Green Team,” “Minnesota Sports” and “Lego Challenge.” For kids entering grades 5 through 7, there will be “TweenVentures,” with activities tailored for older youth. SummerVentures will again be offering the popular Field Trip Fridays.

Families can register for one day or all summer. Choose from a variety of enrollment options, including Half Day Sunrise (6:30 a.m. to noon), Half Day Sunset (noon to 6 p.m.) and Full Day (6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

Skating School Partnership with Community Services a Win-Win

In 2011, Northfield Skating School Director Carey Tinkelenberg and Community Services Recreation Coordinator Erin Mayberry began a collaboration resulting in success for both the organizations and area kids. U.S. Figure Skating recently featured Tinkelenberg’s story in their “Club Spotlight.” Please note: older articles have been archived at the bottom of the page.

The Community Services Recreation program is made possible due the support of the City of Northfield.

Summer Classes Available to View

Start planning your summer schedule with Northfield Public Schools Community Services.

Summer classes for ages birth to senior are available online for viewing as you begin planning your summer. The brochure will be mailed and registration will begin on April 20.

There are many new classes as well as old favorites. Adult class highlights include Introduction to Archery (also for youth), Adult Tennis Lessons, Online Marketing with YouTube & Video, Creative Container Gardening, and an iPad series. Youth class highlights include Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Lessons, Game On, Princess Camp, Yucky Science Favorites, and Clay & Canvas Creations.
