The app is entirely self-contained, with all of the content downloaded with the app – so you do not need to be connected to the internet in order for the app to work, which makes it easy to access anywhere; even beyond the reach of your mobile phone reception.

Although it doesn’t include some of the more interactive features that some of the other apps do, everything you need to deal with a first aid situation is available to you with this lightweight app.

You should note that the first aid advice in this app is based solely upon UK protocols, and that both the UK and European emergency services numbers are provided within the app.

Those sections allow you to learn first aid, prepare yourself for some of the most common emergency situations, access step-by-step instructions for emergency first aid situations, take quizzes to test how much you have learned, and finally the info section for you to find out more about the British Red Cross.

If you’re looking for a first aid app with more than just the basics, one that will help you to learn first aid techniques rather than just provide you the information at the time of the emergency, then this is the one for you.

First Aid – American Red Cross

This App is an American Red Cross version of the British Red Cross app, it provides all of the same great features, but is produced by the American Red Cross instead. The emergency service number in this app is the American 9-1-1, whereas the emergency service number in the British Red Cross app is 9-9-9.  

I highly recommend that you pick one of the apps and download it to your smartphone. Hopefully you’ll never need to use it, but should that time come, then you’ll be very pleased you have it and it could even help you to save somebody’s life!

To the right is an example of a very clever advertising scheme which is incredibly creative. The key to this advert is the symbolism created by the over-sized stationery, where it is almost certain to draw attention to those walking across the zebra crossing. The visual representation of correction fluid next to the white lines creates the illusion that the lines have been painted on with the brush, an immediately striking image. As people are spending time trying to figure out what’s going on by reading the label, they are in fact reading about the company itself, i.e. where it is located and the products offered. Imagery which initially sparks a level of confusion and then requires you to work out what’s going on already causes people to look at a company’s advertisement longer than they would any other advert. The unique nature of this advert is very appealing, for something which is otherwise viewed as boring (stationery).

To the left is an effective banner for the advertisement of a plasticine company. The visual imagery is spectacular here, and instantly causes the viewer to question why the propellers of the helicopter have folded in this manner. This is another example of intriguing imagery which causes the user to question the intention of the advert, as it is not immediately recognisable. Once you have viewed the imagery in all its glory, taking in the views and admiring the graphical work, you can see from the top right that it is actually advertising a plasticine company. From here you can begin to understand why the propellers have collapsed, and immediately associate this incidence with the properties of the resource plasticine. The key feature is the length of time spent admiring the banner and the length of time spent on making an association between the image and the company, which isn’t immediately obvious and results in you viewing the advert longer.

In order to decide whether a 3 jaw chuck or a collet chuck is the right workholding option for a specific job, there are several factors to consider.  Hopefully the information below will help you make the right choice.

Load capacity

It is important to remember that all lathe spindles have a maximum weight capacity, which is determined by the bearing load capacity.  Where the combined weight of the workpiece and the chuck are in excess of the maximum spindle load capacity, it can overload the bearings.  As 3 jaw chucks tend to be larger and heavier than collets chucks, the latter is a more appropriate choice where weight limitations are a concern.

Spindle RPM

When it comes to applications that demand a high level of spindle RPM, there are two reasons that mean collet chucks tend to be the right choice.  The first relates to the mass of a collet chuck in relation to the mass of a 3 jaw chuck.  As a collet chuck has a lower mass, the same amount of spindle horsepower would see the chuck accelerate up to the required machining speed faster.  This of course means that cycle time is reduced with a collet chuck, which can impact on productivity.

The second reason focuses on the levels of centrifugal force, which can cause problems at high speeds as it increases at the square of RPM.  So, by doubling the spindle speed RPM, you are left with a situation where the centrifugal force is quadrupled.  Where a 3 jaw chuck is being used, this centrifugal force can pull the jaws outwards from the centre and thus reduce the achievable clamping force.  The effects of centrifugal force have less impact on collet chucks, which are able to retain a more constant clamping force across a greater range of speeds.

Operation

Where jawed chucks can only deliver clamping force in select areas, collet chucks provide clamping around the entire circumference of the workpiece – which means excellent concentricity.  This is a huge benefit where second operation machining is required and accuracy is important.  Even where a jawed chuck is utilised in the first operation stage, a collet chuck can still be the right choice for second operation due to the levels of clamping precision.

Dimensions

In terms of workpiece dimensions, collet chucks are best suited to those with a diameter that is 75mm or less.  Using a collet chucks can also mean that the length of the workpiece is limited due to the fact its length is greater than that of a jaw type chucks.  If you have a workpeice with a long machining length, it may be that you require all of the travel of the machine to carry out the job.  In such instances it may not be feasible to use a collet chuck.

Changeover requirements

Where you are producing high quantities of the same component, changeover speeds of workpieces becomes a key consideration.  The time it takes to open and close collet chucks is significantly less than carrying out the same operation with a jawed chuck.  This of course reduces the amount of non-machining time between each workpiece, thus shortening cycle time and improving productivity.

Workpiece sizes

One of the main reasons that collet chucks are able to open and close so quickly is because they have a short actuation stroke, due to their limited workpiece clamping range.  The trade-off of reducing clamping range is that of improved speed in terms of spindle RPM and changeover.  This is ideal where the job involves consistent part sizes.  However, where there is a significant variation in the size of workpieces, it may be that a jaw chuck is required to complete the whole work range.

Workpiece material

Standard jaw chucks are best suited for materials such as hot rolled steels, forgings and castings, where there are likely to be variations in diameter.  Where size is likely to be more consistent, with cold rolled materials, collet chucks are more suited.

The rate at which QR code interaction is increasing is almost unbelievable, from July 2010 to December 2010 QR Code scans had a 1,200% increase – in just 5 months!

We’re starting to see QR codes pop up all over the place. I’ve seen them on product packaging, advertisements, business cards, food, clothing and websites, and there is no signs of ‘the QR invasion’ slowing down. In fact, quite the opposite, QR codes are being implemented in more and more places, and with greater functionality – Starbucks now allows its customers to place an order and pay for it on their smartphone using QR codes, meaning they spend far less time waiting in line.

Pretty amazing, right? When you consider its original and intended use, compared to the many uses companies are putting it to today, and the short amount of time it’s taken for QR codes to hit the mainstream.

It looks like Apple have at least played a part in bringing the QR codes into the realm of the public – with well two-thirds (68%) of all QR code scans being performed on an Apple device (more than likely one of the iPhone devices, which can all scan QR codes thanks to the free QR scanning apps).
