Due to the large response from NSSA members across the country and within all concurrents and open classes, the NSSA Executive Committee has reconsidered the recent changes to target standards. After soliciting input from the membership, the Executive Committee has reviewed the response from the membership to their Directors, as reported by their Zone Committeemen on the EC.

The Executive Committeemen reported a slight preference among the Directors canvassed for the 1000-target singles event standards. After thoughtful consideration, the Executive Committee has revised the 2012 NSSA Target Standards as follows:

Open Teams – 1000 in each of the four guns, with Doubles remaining at 500

Concurrents – Remain the same as previous levels, except for the reduction of 12 gauge to 800 targets to match the other single guns. Doubles remain at 500, and Sub-Junior, Senior Veteran and Super Veteran remain at previous levels.

2012 NSSA Target Standards

The NSSA Target Standards program serves two purposes. The association recognizes those shooters who register a minimum number of targets for the year, awarding a “Target Standards” pin to each member who reaches that milestone. Secondly, if you are competing for the All-American Team, High Average Leader honors, or Honor Squad, you must shoot the minimums set in the Target Standards.

NSSA Headquarters will be sending out reminders of target standards throughout the season.

The Executive Committee will be considering a ballot vote at the annual director’s meeting in October to address target standards for future shooting seasons as we move forward.

USA Shooting has announced the selection of the Tucson Trap & Skeet Club as the host site for the 2012 International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) Shotgun World Cup with more than 250 of the world’s best expected to compete March 24-31.

Four-time Olympic medalist Kim Rhode, already competing at the 2012 Olympic Games in skeet, will shoot in the Tucson World Cup looking to earn a spot in women's trap as well.

Four-time Olympic medalist Kim Rhode, already competing at the 2012 Olympic Games in skeet, will shoot in the Tucson World Cup looking to earn a spot in women’s trap as well.

The 2012 ISSF Shotgun World Cup will be one of two final World Cup stops contested prior to the 2012 Olympic Games in London. As a result, USA Shooting anticipates a large number of shooters, as many will use this as one of the last major shooting tests prior to the Games getting underway July 26. Shooters will compete in the three different international events of trap, double trap and skeet.

Among the world-class field of shooters will be American Kim Rhode (El Monte, CA) as she begins her quest for Olympic history. The four-time Olympic medalist has the opportunity to become the first U.S. female to win five individual medals in five Olympic Games if she accomplishes the feat yet again in London.

“I’m looking forward to the Tucson World Cup as a measure of what I need to do to prepare for the London Games,” said Rhode. “Plus, this will be my first opportunity to post an MQS [minimum qualifying score] and qualify for the London Olympics in trap as well. It is going to be nice to have the home field advantage for a change, and being Tucson Trap and Skeet Club is a premier shooting range, we can expect high scores.”

Four additional 2008 Olympians will also be a part of the USA Shooting Team represented in Tucson including gold medalists Vincent Hancock (skeet/Eatonton, GA) and Glen Eller (double trap/Katy, TX) as well as women’s trap bronze medalist Corey Cogdell (Eagle River, AK). Jeff Holguin (Yorba Linda, CA), a fourth-place finisher in double trap, is also set to participate. A full list of top competitors will be released after February 23.

The Tucson Trap & Skeet Club has recently constructed international trap bunkers to add to their current trap and skeet competition capability. Not only will the event bring added tourism revenue, but it will also allow the city of Tucson to display its historic roots.

“This event is a tremendous opportunity to not only showcase our incredible year-round weather and warm hospitality, but also to show that Tucson is one of a handful of sites in the United States that can host this type of event for many years to come,” said Tucson Sports Director Vince Trinidad.

“We look forward to partnering with Tucson Trap and Skeet Club to host a 2012 ISSF World Cup event,” said USAS Executive Director Robert Mitchell. “The club has added Olympic-style shotgun fields to an impressive facility that has hosted many large American shotgun competitions previously. The World Cup will be an individual qualifier for the 2012 Olympic Games in the Trap, Skeet and Double Trap events and thus will feature intense competition and provide a preview of things to come in London.”

While the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team for shotgun will be decided in the coming months, the future of the program continues to unfold each year with the naming of the Junior Olympic Shotgun Team. This year, 22 shooters were selected for the team for which they will receive the support, assistance, and coaching needed to advance through the ranks of competitive shotgun shooting.

The Junior Olympic program for USA Shooting can often be the beginning of the Olympic journey for many shooters. Tasked with the responsibility to identify the brightest young talent in the sport, USA Shooting is proud to announce the members of the 2012 Junior Olympic Shotgun Team. The Junior Olympic Shotgun Team is the gateway into the USA Shooting Team’s Olympic path. National Shotgun Coach Bret Erickson and the Junior Olympic Shotgun Team committee reviewed 80-plus applications this year – a record number that indicates growth in the shooting sports.

“The talent pool has strengthened over the past year, and the competition was steep,” said Erickson, a four-time Olympian. “We’re happy to acknowledge this group of young kids in hopes that they’ll gain the confidence and maturity necessary to be elite-level shooters in our program down the road.” New to the program is the addition of a Men’s Double Trap category for which four shooters were selected for the first time ever.

The team is comprised of nine trap, nine skeet, and four double trap shooters. Shooters from the Lone Star State make up the majority of the team, with six of the 22 shooters announced hailing from Texas. Tennessee and California also were heavy contributors to the team, placing four and three shotgun athletes on the team respectively.

William Hinton (Dacula, GA) and Christopher Webster (Bainbridge, GA) come from USA Shooting’s Certified Training Center South Georgia Youth Shooting and Bridge Creek Clays in Hartsfield, GA. Under the direction of Coach Mike Simpson, Hinton and Webster now comprise half of the Junior Olympic Shotgun Team for Men’s Double Trap. Robert Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) also developed his skills at another USAS Certified Training Center in Phoenix. Johnson trains at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility/Clay Target Center. To learn more about USA Shooting’s Certified Training Centers, please click here.

Sub-gauge shooters have an opportunity to participate in a points race for events this year at eight Texas clubs, culminating at the National Sporting Clays Championship in October.
