W7-64 did not set up dual boot

Hello, new poster here. I've searched the forums, reviewed the multi-boot documents and think my problem is not covered in either. If it is, my apologies.

_*BACKGROUND*_

In preparation for my W7-64 Ultimate I prepared my disks as follows (also see image V32-W7-64.jpg).

* My PC is Vista-32 with two physical disks
* Disk 0 ; Single primary partition ; Drive letter 'I' ; Label 'User_data'
* Disk 1 ; EISA partition + three primary partitions ; Drive letters 'C' 'D' 'E' ; Labels 'Vista_32' 'Windows7_64' 'User_Apps'

I booted from the W7 DVD and ran a custom installation to the partition labeled 'Windows7-64'. I expected this to add a boot option allowing boot from either Vista or W7 but this did not happen.

_*INSTALLATION*_

This all seemed to go fine and W7 installed without error to the Windows7_64 partition but:

* it's drive letter became 'C'
* the Vista partition drive letter became 'D'.
* W7 could not see the partition on Drive 0 at all.

So I'm starting to panic here because all my user data was suddenly hidden and no obvious way to make it visible.

_*FLUKE RECOVERY*_

I booted the system with the W7 DVD again and went through the installation process again to ensure that I hadn't missed an obscure checkbox or some other reference to multi-boot.

I hit [enter] once too many times and it started to reinstall W7 again. I hit cancel - which froze the machine. So I powered it off. On a restart my original boot entries reappeared and all my partitions and both drives were back to their original state.

_*SO WHAT HELP AM I AFTER?*_

Thanks for bearing with me this far! What I'm now stuck with is a fear that any attempt to reinstall W7 again is going to hide my 'Disk 0' again and I may not be so lucky with a fluke recovery. So:

* Is it normal for the drive letters to change (I was presuming Vista would always be C: and W7 D: in my setup)?
* Can EasyBCD 1.7 help (EBCD 2.0.0.76 beta does not work on my PC - see bug reports (http://neosmart.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5340))?
* Any and all other suggestions gratefully received?!

Oh - and I presume that my 30 day activation grace period is now counting down.

Cheers,

I'm having trouble dual booting Vista-32 / W7-64 and hoped EasyBCD would help (I'll post details in the support forum).

Seeing that the beta supports W7 I've installed and run it. It immediately produces the error in neo1.jpg - details in neodetails.txt.

EasyBCD doesn't show anything in boot options (see neo2.jpg) but, as shown in neo3.jpg there is a vista boot entry (there is also a recovery entry on the drop-down).

I hope this is helpful.

Im completely new to EBCD. I actually haven't even installed it yet. I was wondering is someone could tell me if it can help with a certain problem.

I recently purchased a new sata drive. I installed ubuntu 9.10 on it, in an attempt to dual boot ubuntu and windows 7. Ubuntu boots fine, but i dont even have the choice to boot into windows 7 now. If i disable the hd with ubuntu in the bios...it wont boot at all, it just stays at grub boot loader.....

I guess my question is...can EBCD help me get my windows back?

I accidentially overwrote my bootloader. I didn't screw up the settings, I removed the bootloader. I need to reinstall it, but it appears that that can only be done from within EasyBCD, and not from a command line. Is there either
A: a way to do it from the command line
B: a way to run EasyBCD from some sort of live CD
C: an alternative (bootloader on a CD, boot to windows, recover, etc?)

Any help that can be given is appreciated!

Windows 7 x86 Disk Management causes non-booter

Hi,

I've got a problem with a recent clean installation of Windows 7 on my Asus Eee PC.
When I installed Win 7, I left the original restore partition in place (PE) and the 39MB one that is after that on the disk. Both located at the end of the disk.
The layout was:
100Mb Boot partition
141Gb Win7 (C)
7.8Gb PE (no letter)
39Mb unknown (no letter)

I tried to shrink the Win 7 partition using the Disk Management, which worked ok. When the shrinking was done, Win7 reported suddenly the PE partition as D: and asked to insert a disk in E:...
I removed the drive letters d: and e: from those partitions and wanted to add a partition in the free space that was left after shrinking.
The coloured bars above each partition had turned yellow/orange and the drive letters were gone, I decided first to reboot to see everything was ok since it seemed suspicious that windows suddenly added the drive-letters, which I had removed as soon as I installed the system.

The reboot resulted in a flashing cursor after passing through the BIOS.

I booted from the install CD (copied onto a USB drive) and opted to repair.
No luck there, no restore points and the Startup Repair seemed to think everything is ok. (No errors found)

Is there any hope in reviving the installation or is it going to be a re-install?

*Addendum: It's FIXED!*

I used the methods of Recovering the Vista Bootloader from the DVD (http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBCD/Recovering+the+Vista+Bootloader+from+the+DVD).
Step 3 did fail, it found 0 windows installations. I went onto step 4 but couldn't find bcedit (of course, it was called bcdedit) and rebooted the machine.
I was about to attach my USB disk to my other PC to see were bcdedit was located, but to my surprise my Eee pc just booted windows when I turned to grab the usb-disk.

I have no clue why and how I fixed it, one of the miracles of the world of windows I'll never understand. Sometimes things do get fixed, even if it says not so. (0 windows installations found)

I thought it would be a good idea to share this, just in case someone else encounters the same.

Concerning the yellow/orange bar, that was supposed to be 'simple volumes', I don't have those on my regular pc. :?? I hope it didn't confuse anybody.

I have been searching forever on how to get this done but cannot find any guides or one that works. I have two hard drives in a Raid 0 array with Windows 7 and Snow Leopard is installed on a USB hard drive.

I can boot Snow leopard by doing F12 to select the Boot drive but no matter what i try i cannot get EasyBCD to add an option to the Win 7 boot. I either get a grubdos screen or nothing happens. Can anyone tell me how I can get this done?

Thanks

ZoneAlarm Prevents EasyBCD From Running

Hi Guys,
Well, it took a bit of hacking around but I found how ZoneAlarm Extreme Security prevents EasyBCD from running.

It is the Zone Force Field module ISWSVC.exe which runs as a service and DOES NOT unload if you exit / stop ZoneAlarm (right click in sys tray and shutdown).

I found if I used task manager (actually SysInternals Process Explorer - much better) to kill ISWSVC.exe I can then start EasyBCD. You have to be quick though because ISWCSVC is a bit of a vampire and keeps rising from the dead - I suspect I might need to disable it in services.

So nothing to do with .NET frameworks at all in this case. Also odd that a Zone "Force Field" component would have this effect since it is (I think) supposed to be for browser protection!!??

Anyway this has been a long and frustrating problem to solve so I hope my findings can be of use to others.

Cheers - Dave

I have both Windows 7 and XP pro. However they are on separate drives. Win 7 was installed after XP. I added the entry in Easy BCD for Windows XP and it is on drive D, while Win 7 is on drive C. I wrote the MBR, and everything seems to be fine, and I see the new entry in BCDEDIT, but after I restart everything disappears and I do not even get a menu to choose XP from, it just boots directly to Win 7. I tried everything, ran as administrator, tried Easy BCD 2.0 nothing works.

Thanks In Advance

Hello Everyone,
Recently I got my laptop to dual boot using EasyBCD Beta 2.0 Today I installed 58 Windows updates into the XP drive (the default OS is Vista).

After the installs and for a "you must reboot your computer..." when I select XP I only get a "Windows was unexpectedly shutdown.. select a start mode.. blah blah, Normal, Safe Mode, etc." No matter which one I select, I will get a continuous reboot, I cannot get to XP. If I select Safe mode, I will see the list of files stream by, but when it gets to the bottom of the list, then it reboots.... over and over and over.......ggrrrrrrr :rage:

Went to EasyBCD, removed XP, rebooted, went to EasyBCD added XP, accepted the defaults, rebooted, selected XP... no boot, still goes into reboot loop same as before. What is going on ? :wtf: Thanks

Triple Boot Installers? (XP/VISTA/7)

Hey guys, new to the forum.

Been looking around the forum, and I know that it's possible to leverage BCD to triple boot installed OS's, but is it possible to use it to make a triple-installer drive? What I mean is, have 3 partitions, each containing the installer for windows xp, vista, and 7? So it'd look like this:

C: - XP Installer
D: - Vista Installer
E: - Windows 7 Installer

Any suggestions? I've been trying this unsuccessfully in a number of different ways. Thanks!

How to recover Windows Vista from a USB drive

Hello

I have a Dell inspiron 6400 which came with Windows Vista Home Basic(which I believe can be voted as the 'worst OS ever created by anyone' comfortably). I decided to move away from Windows and installed Ubuntu on the recovery partition (Vista is on C, the recovery partition was on D). After restart, I didn't get the option to boot Vista (I searched on the internet and found that lot of people have had this problem when they deleted the recovery partition to install Ubuntu). I then researched on how to get the Vista boot files back and that led me to NeoSmart website. I downloaded the recovery iso image and burnt it to a CD. That was when I realised that my CD ROM drive doesn't work anymore. So I am looking for a solution which can do the recovery from an USB drive. I have a 4G USB drive, I tried doing an xcopy of all the files from the CD to the USB drive. When I tried to boot Windows using the USB drive, I got a 'Disk Error'. Maybe this is not the right way, but I believe there should be a way out. All the recovery solutions that I found on the Internet wree all CD based solutions.
Can someone here let me know if it is even possible to recover Windows Vista from an USB drive? I greatly appreciate the wonderful work that everyone at NeoSmart is doing.
Advanced thanks for all the help.
