Members of Dogtown Fire Department traveled this past weekend to Colbert County to participate in the 49th Annual Alabama Association of Volunteer Fire Departments Conference and Firefighter Competition.

Chief Jon Burt said he is proud of the department’s members and the time and effort they have dedicated to building competitive teams and strengthening overall performance.

Dogtown entered two teams in this year’s competition to give newer members experience and insight into how the event is conducted. A total of seven teams from across Alabama competed, including Elkmont, Nitrate City, Billingsley, Seven Hill, New Bethel, Dogtown Team 1, and Dogtown Team 2.

All teams were noted for strong performances and sportsmanship throughout the event.

When the competition concluded, Dogtown Team 1 earned first place in every event and secured first place overall.

Chief Burt noted that anticipation is already building for next year’s 50th anniversary competition, with several departments expected to contend for the top spot.

He closed by thanking all Dogtown Fire members for their continued service, dedication, and commitment to the department and the community.

VIDEO: Just days after a devastating fire destroyed the Lincoln Food Pantry, the community gathered in prayer Monday with a single message: this setback will not stop their mission to feed those in need. “There is going to be beauty that rises up from these ashes here at the Lincoln Food Pantry,” Director Brandon Tate said.

The fire broke out around 10 p.m. Thursday, leaving the pantry building a total loss and destroying all of the food stored inside. The loss is significant for a pantry that serves hundreds of families each month.

“In any given month, we serve between 350 and 400 households,” Tate said. “That’s between 800 and 1,100 people a month that receive food from the Lincoln Food Pantry.”

Now, Tate said his focus is on getting operations back up and running as quickly as possible.

PHOTOS: The fire chief says they were responding a crash involving a pickup truck when a fire truck and tow truck were hit by a passing SUV. No one was hurt. St. Elmo-Irvington VFD sent this message to News 5:

“Today, SEIVFD’s Rescue 21 and a tow truck were struck by another vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed while operating on an emergency scene.

Thankfully, no firefighters were seriously injured, but Rescue 21 is currently out of service due to the damage sustained in the crash.

This is a reminder that every time first responders step out onto a roadway, their lives are on the line. We ask everyone to please slow down, stay alert, and move over when approaching emergency vehicles, tow trucks, law enforcement, and roadside workers.

A few extra seconds of caution can save a life.

Please help protect those who are working to protect you and your community.

A firefighter in Alexandria is being recognized for going above and beyond after helping a resident both during and after a medical emergency. According to the Alexandria Fire Department, crews responded to a medical call Saturday involving a person suffering from a heat-related illness while mowing their lawn.

Firefighters arrived, assessed the patient and provided medical care before the individual was transported to a hospital for further evaluation.

While on scene, Lieutenant Colton Brown noticed the resident’s lawn had only been partially mowed before the medical emergency occurred.

Wanting to ease the burden on the patient and their family, Brown stayed behind and finished mowing the lawn so the resident would not have to worry about it when returning home.

The Alexandria Fire Department praised Brown’s actions, saying his willingness to help reflects the dedication, compassion and commitment firefighters bring to the community every day.

Department officials thanked Brown for making a difference and helping someone during a difficult time.

A quick response from a local firefighter is being credited with saving the life of a one-year-old child who stopped breathing while dining at a restaurant in Ardmore. On May 14, Battalion Chief John Penny with Toney Volunteer Fire & Rescue was having lunch with his wife at Mildred’s when a child began choking.

Without hesitation, Penny rushed to assist the child. Using his emergency training and experience, he quickly assessed the situation and administered back blows, successfully clearing the child’s airway.

As Penny prepared to provide rescue breaths, the child began breathing again on her own. He stayed with the child until crews from Ardmore Fire arrived on the scene.

He was awarded a medical lifesaver award.

A Centre couple escaped a house fire early Wednesday after their smoke alarm woke them up, prompting them to evacuate their smoke-filled home and leave behind their belongings and a pet.

Units from the McCord’s Crossroads Fire Department, Spring Creek Fire Department and Cave Spring Fire Department were notified of the structure fire around 4:30 Wednesday morning (6/10/26). The fire was reported at a home in the 12,000 block of County Road 29 in the McCord’s Crossroads community.

McCord’s Crossroads Assistant Chief Barry Rogers Jr. was among the first to arrive and reported “smoke showing.”

Although smoke was visible from the main level of the home, fire officials said crews conducting a 360-degree size-up determined the fire originated in a partial walk-out basement. A crew entered the basement and extinguished the blaze. Fire damage was confined to a single room and its contents, though smoke damage was reported throughout the home.

Volunteer firefighters from across Alabama are heading to Muscle Shoals this weekend for one of the state’s largest annual training events, bringing together first responders, vendors and families for three days of learning, competition and community.

The Colbert County Association of Volunteer Fire Departments is hosting the 49th Annual Alabama Association of Volunteer Fire Departments Conference at the North Alabama State Fairgrounds, located at 65 Sportsplex Drive in Muscle Shoals.

Organizers expect more than 75 vendors to attend, giving firefighters a chance to explore the latest equipment, technology and services while networking with departments from across the state.

Training opportunities throughout the conference include classes on sonar operations, bleeding control, chainsaw safety, fireground operations and communications, as well as hands-on fire college props.

Friday’s schedule will focus on training and vendor exhibits, while Saturday will feature the firefighter competition, one of the conference’s most anticipated events. The annual business meeting and banquet will also take place Saturday evening.

PHOTOS: After five hours of hard work, Garden City Fire Department (GCFD) and assisting stations have extinguished a roof fire at Tyson’s River Valley Ingredients in Cullman County. GCFD reports that they were called to the scene at 4:55 a.m. after the flames were spotted on the roof of Plant A.

They say that one of the cookers caught fire, sending flames up and through the vent’s tubing system that lead to the roof. No one was injured in the fire.

This is not the first time emergency crews have been called out to River Valley Ingredients. In July 2021, another fire at the plant impacted hundreds of jobs, according to Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail. He suggested that the cause was a grease fire, which an employee had spotted and reported.

Firefighters had trouble putting out the flames since the building was made of metal, but were eventually able to get it under control with the help of multiple local fire departments that were called in to help with the fire and a 10,000 gallon water tanker.

The Huntsville Fire Department is adding a valuable piece of equipment to its arsenal that will strengthen its wildland firefighting capabilities, thanks to a donation from a community member. A staff report presented to Huntsville’s General Committee in May recommends accepting a donated firefighting skid unit valued at approximately $10,000.

The equipment, which includes a portable pump, hose reel, and water tank, would be stationed at the Port Sydney Fire Station and used to support responses to wildland fire emergencies.

According to Deputy Fire Chief Paul Calleja, the donation comes at a time when awareness and preparedness surrounding wildland fires are becoming increasingly important across Ontario.

The portable skid unit can be mounted on a department utility terrain vehicle (UTV) or pickup truck, allowing firefighters to access remote areas that larger fire apparatus often cannot reach.

The donated equipment is approximately 10 years old and includes a Honda 2-horsepower four-stroke engine, pump, 15-metre hose reel and 100-litre water tank.

Despite its age, fire officials estimate the unit has sufficient remaining life expectancy to remain in service for another decade.

VIDEO: Athens Fire & Rescue responded to a fuel spill that took place on Monday. City of Athens officials said that firefighters were notified of a fuel smell in the area of Hines Street and Market Street around 12:30 a.m.

According to Athens Fire & Rescue Chief James Hand, a fuel leak was found at Fuel City, a gas station near the intersection.

Hand told News 19 that the Public Works Department also responded to the scene and attempted to contain it. However, heavy rain this morning caused the fuel to wash into Town Creek.

Officials said there is a fuel odor along the creek. According to Hand, the spill did not impact the city’s drinking water source, which is the Elk River.

Hand said the Alabama Department of Environmental Management responded to the scene and is overseeing response efforts.
