The Pell City Fire Department has temporarily closed Fire Station No. 4 in Eden after firefighters discovered significant moisture damage and structural concerns inside the building. According to a statement released by the department, a firefighter found extensive moisture damage behind a bedroom wall during an inspection at the station.

Fire Chief Jerry Dailey then conducted an immediate walkthrough of the facility and determined the station was no longer suitable to house firefighters.

Department officials said the 27-year-old station has experienced recurring moisture problems for years. Previous repair efforts by the city reportedly provided only temporary relief.

A more detailed inspection later revealed what officials described as a major construction flaw: the building was originally constructed without a proper exterior moisture barrier.

As a result, Chief Dailey ordered the Eden crew relocated to Station 1, citing concerns about firefighter health and safety.

The City of Foley is closer to finishing its safe room designated for first responders. According to a news release, the Foley City Council approved utility easements for the facility at its last meeting. The city and Baldwin County are working together as the parcel of land where the approved facility is sits next to county-owned property.

“We’re not doing the whole easement on the city side,” Mayor Ralph Hellmich said. “We’re taking half of the city’s property and half of the county’s, so we jointly share that easement coming into both of our properties.”

Riviera Utilities is set to provide the services to the facility.

“The two easements, working together, will give Riviera the access they need to bring power into the first responder safe room,” Foley Projects Director Buford King said.

In addition to more approved lighting for the facility, the council is moving forward with installing decorative street lights on East Berry Avenue.

The facility is scheduled for completion in 2027 and can house more than 200 people during a hurricane while withstanding winds of up to 200 miles per hour.

Officials say the facility can be used as a training center when it’s not being used as a shelter.

VIDEO: He stepped off a city bus, walked into City Hall and found a job 40 years ago. This month, District Chief Craig Flynn of the Montgomery Fire Department is marking four decades of service to his hometown. Flynn was “born and raised in Montgomery’s north side, in a small community called Charlestown,” he said.

In 1986, Flynn was 26 and riding the city bus when he passed City Hall. He got off, walked into the personnel department, filled out an application and never looked back.

“The first day I started, they drilled into our heads teamwork, honor and discipline, and it just follows you through your career,” Flynn said.

Flynn credits his mother for inspiring him to help people. That inspiration drove him to fight fires for 21 years.

He rose through the ranks, first to sergeant, then to his biggest promotion yet: district chief. He has held that role for 19 years.

Montgomery has changed greatly over the past four decades, but Flynn’s reason for showing up hasn’t.

“I enjoy getting up and coming in to work every day. It’s an honor to represent this city,” Flynn said.

Flynn said he enjoys being around his colleagues. As he puts it, Father Time is undefeated.

PHOTOS: Montgomery firefighters have battled a fire at a commercial strip center just off Vaughn Road. The fire started around 2 p.m. Saturday in the 8400 block of Crossland Loop, which is just off Vaughn Road, between Peppertree Lane and Halcyon Boulevard. Crews found heavy smoke and flames when they arrived.

The intensity of the fire caused it to be elevated to a second alarm, with additional crews and equipment being dispatched to the scene.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading past the building where it started. No one was hurt.

The Montgomery Fire Rescue Bureau of Investigation is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the origin and cause of the fire.

VIDEO: A house fire just outside Citronelle destroyed a family’s home Monday evening, leaving them with no belongings but no reported injuries, authorities said. The fire was reported around 6 p.m. on County Line Road, just across the Mobile County line. Citronelle Fire Rescue responded to assist the Charity Chapel Fire Department.

Assistant Citronelle Fire Chief Harold Mason said the blaze had already spread through more than half of the attic when crews arrived.

Firefighters initially entered the home but were forced to evacuate after the roof collapsed, making conditions too dangerous to continue interior operations, Mason said.

The home was declared a total loss. No injuries were reported.

Investigators believe the fire may have started in the garage, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

The Albertville Fire Department has new life-saving technology after a major investment from city leaders to replace and upgrade equipment for first responders and patients in the field. For close to a year, the department’s paramedics operated without ventilators on board their trucks. Deputy Fire Chief Richard Soper said those are a privilege to have, not a requirement, but they are a big help in the field.

The department has now outfitted the ambulances with new LifePak 35 monitors and Hamilton T1 ventilators.

The upgraded LifePak system allows first responders to transmit a patient’s vitals directly to doctors in real time, both on scene and while heading to the hospital. That means hospital staff can better prepare for a patient’s arrival.

Soper said this is already saving lives.

VIDEO: A family in Clay is grateful to be alive after a devastating fire tore through the home they were renting during the early morning hours Monday. Gina Collins was supposed to start her new job Monday, instead, her, her son and her son’s girlfriend awoke to the sound of smoke detectors going off. That sound that probably saved all of their lives.

“I’m beyond thankful, I’m beyond thankful that no one tripped,” said Houston Curtis. “That the smoke alarms did go off and we were woken up.”

“If we had been there one more minute, we would have had to bust out a window instead of running out the front door,” Curtis added.

Fire Chief Brandon Dahlen with Center Point Fire District said it took them 25 minutes to put down the fire. He said the cause of the fire is under investigation and the house is a total loss.

“On arrival we did find a residence that had a lot of fire showing, well advanced before we got there,” said Dahlen.

PHOTOS: Crews with the Florence Fire Department responded to a large house fire on Monday morning.

According to FFD Chief Tim Anerton, crews responded to a call about a house fire on East Tombigbee Street just before 5:30 a.m. The fire started on the ground and made its way up to the roof.

“Fire personnel made entry to search for any possible occupants and to begin fire extinguishment. After about ten minutes, crews were withdrawn due to heavy fire conditions, and a defensive operation was begun,” Florence Fire said.

At the time of the fire, Anerton said one person was in the home, and he was able to escape the house without injury before fire crews arrived. There were also no firefighter injuries reported.
