Students Need to BRING ALL technology + attachments on TUESDAY, May 29, 2011

MPLS Lobby 7 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.

for necessary upgrades.

Opportunity for Student to Retain Technology

The research on the iPads and MacBooks will continue. If students are willing to engage in this research they may retain their technology into the next year. The technology still needs to be brought to school so that necessary upgrades can be done so that students will administrative rights to their technology. The forms that need completed for this research can be found in the office.

They include: Informed Consent Form, One-to-One Computer Use Agreement, and a Form that includes a receipt of income, an off-campus use of university equipment, and W9 certification.

All 9-11th grade students that were present on Friday, May 25 were given the forms. All others can pick up at the office, or email lyn.countryman@uni.edu for a pdf copy of the form.

These forms will be collected Tuesday, May 29th, in the MPLS main entrance LOBBY between 7:00 - 9:00 a.m. and between 2:00 p.m. & 3:00 p.m.

All parents, guardians, and significant family members are invited to the MPLS Celebration Picnic, Tuesday May 29 on the front lawn of MPLS. Food will be ready at 11:00 a.m. The approximate schedule is below.

Normal morning classes
10:30 All School Assembly (Gary Kroeger, speaks for 20 minutes)
Picnic following assembly
11:00 K-2 Lunch
11:15 3-5 Lunch
11:30 6-8 Lunch
11:45 9-12 Lunch
2:00 Dismissal

Faculty/staff, parents & community members will filter through lunch line with respective students.

Following lunch K-5 students will participate in carnival activities on the east (front) lawn. 6-12 students will participate in Panther Olympics on the north lawn and track area.

LAST DAY -May 30 - Dismissal 11:00 a.m.*

Elementary - regular classes
Middle School - Normal Classes till 10:00 am and then checkout with advisors until 11:00 a.m.

Summer Science Camps –JOIN US this June!

CSI: Cedar Falls – Crimefighting with Biotechnology
Join us for a one week workshop (June 25-29) for high school students (students entering grades 9-12) that allows for hands-on experience with the tools of biotechnology. Students will isolate DNA, analyze it, and understand how these techniques are used in gathering DNA evidence from a crime scene. Other topics include a project that asks how microbes cause disease and understanding the role of biotechnology in the production of energy. It will be from 9-4 Mon-Fri and scholarships are available. Cost of the camp is $200 which includes lunch at UNI. MiniSumo Robotics Camp
If you like working with robots, try the MiniSumo Robotics camp from June 18-22. Students get to make mini-sumo robots and learn to read and write basic computer programs to operate these machines. At the end of the week, each student gets to keep their fully operable mini-sumo robot. It will be from 9-3:30 Mon-Fri and scholarships are available. Cost of the camp is $295. I am sorry that you were not able to see the attachments on the previous email that listed the current yearbook orders. To make sure you will be able to view the list, we have inserted it into the body of this message.

Please check the list below to see if you have ordered a yearbook. If you think you have ordered, but your name is not on the list, please send me an email. If you have not ordered, you will havethrough May 25th to do so. After that date, it will no longer be possible to order a yearbook.

To order, please stop by the main office and fill out a short order form and make your payment at that time. You may also click http://www.uni.edu/iowa rds/site/yearbook/index.html to download an order form from the PLS website. Please note the current cost of the yearbooks may not match what is on the order form. (The cost of the high school book is $50 and the cost of the elementary middle school book is $20.) Also note: The content of the elementary/middle school yearbook is identical to the elementary/middle school section of the high school yearbook.

The production of the two yearbooks, high school and elementary/middle school, are well underway and should be finished the early part of June. Once they are sent to Jostens Publishing Company, it will take a number of weeks to get them printed and bound. When finished, they will be mailed to your home address, most likely in August. If your address will be changing, please let me know as soon as possible so I can make sure you receive your yearbook.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is the day when all Library books are due back in the Library. The MPLS office will begin invoicing all books not returned by the end of the day tomorrow, May 23. If the books are not returned tomorrow you will be charged and this charge will be non-refundable.

NU High Uniforms

If your son/daughter has any athletic uniforms, practice jersey's, or other school equipment still with them those need to be returned by Friday, May 25th. The high school girls soccer team will keep their uniforms until their season ends. Uniforms can be dropped off with Mr. Smeins or the main office with their name on it. Those uniforms not turned in by Friday will be charged to powerschool bill. Thanks!

Malcolm Price Laboratory School – Transition Update May 18, 2012

Dear MPLS Parents and Students,

Congratulations to the May 20, 2012 graduates! We wish you continued success as you begin new ventures this fall. Also, as the school year draws to close, we wish all students and families a good summer and continued success.

Please be sure to contact the school district your child will attend next fall so the district can plan accordingly for their staffing needs. Area schools need to plan for hiring their teachers and knowing your child’s future plans are important.

· All student academic records will be maintained at the UNI Registrar’s Office starting June 7. All websites will be updated to keep everyone informed of who to contact for transcripts.

· News from the Cedar Falls School District:

Cedar Falls Schools originally announced that building assignments of MPLS students would occur by May 15th. This date was originally selected because of the Open Enrollment deadline of April 16th. We did not realize at that time that parents could file multiple open enrollment applications, and that final enrollment decisions do not need to be made until registration is held in a given school district for the 2012-2013 school year.

The Cedar Falls School District wants to assure MPLS parents that live in the Cedar Falls School District that if, and when, you make a decision to enroll your child(ren) in the Cedar Falls Schools there will be space available for your child in your neighborhood school. For example: If you live in the Lincoln attendance area and decide to wait until August 5th to enroll your child in the CF Schools there will be space available at Lincoln for your student. Cedar Falls Schools does have the capacity for all MPLS students to attend their neighborhood school if they so choose.

For those parents who live in Cedar Falls and are requesting a rule exception for your child to attend a school other than your neighborhood school, those decisions will be made as quickly as possible though we cannot guarantee a date when those decisions will be made. If you have additional questions please call 553-3000 or contact the principal of your neighborhood school.

As always,all MPLS Library materials are due back in the Library one week before the end of the school year. This is especially important this year. We must check in all library books and place them back on shelves. There will be NO opportunity to return late books after May 23rd. WE sent out late book notices to students April 28th. Overdue notices will be handed to students again on May 11. Please check with your students. There are too many to send out electronically. Brief Update on What's Happening

Brief Update

K-12 student Team

All cumulative files and transcripts will be transferred to UNI register's office on June 6, 2012.
When you know what school your student is attending, IF it is by June 5th, please call the office and let us know. If we can make the connections, we will communicate to these schools & transport these cumulative files to these schools.
After June 6th, when you have selected this school for your students you need to have the school send a request to the UNI registrar to send your cumulative file to that school. The request comes from the school. Cumulative files are transferred School to School.
A website is being developed to facilitate the requests for transcripts. As has been our practice the UNI registrar will not charge for sending high school transcripts to post-secondary institutions.

MPLS Faculty and Staff Team

Many term faculty, some tenure-track/tenured faculty are receiving jobs in a variety of public schools: Waverly, Cedar Falls, Waukee, Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Mason City, and Waterloo to name a few. There are still faculty actively looking.
Many tenured & probationary faculty will be transitioning to a field experience faculty position in the Department of Teaching - Office of Student Field Experience Division.

Clinical Experiences Team

Job descriptions for field supervision are written and many plans are falling into place for all pre-service field experiences.

Child Development Center

Plans for remodeling a quality space for the CDC are in progress. Plans include utilizing the space presently occupied by the MPLS pool. This will provide a high quality space for the CDC located close to their outside play area and allow them to utilize the gym for large motor skills in inclement weather.

Facility Assets

UNI has facilitated faculty moves by providing boxes and protecting our students and spaces.
In terms of the contents of the building, other UNI departments will be able to request specific materials. This will not be done until after school is out on May 30. No timeline has been established as to when an auction of the remainder of the contents will be done.
We are working to create a list of items that are of "sentimental value" but little resale value. Discussion concerning how to follow university guidelines on these sentimental items and the rest of the contents is on-going.

PLS Donors Team

Of most interest to parents is that there is a significant amount of money that will be available for scholarships. The plans are to open up these scholarships to NU seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshman in addition to past NU graduates who are currently in post-secondary classes. Applications for these scholarships will be forth coming.

Commemorate & Celebrate

The celebrations include many of the activities for our students the last weeks of class, ending with a MPLS COMMUNITY WIDE PICNIC. We invite parents and NU/MPLS community to this picnic on May 29th on the lawn of MPLS. We will kick this off with a school-wide assembly at 10:30 in Butzier Auditorium where NU Alum Gary Kroeger will give a motivating, and captivating send off. Then we will start the picnic at 11:00 a.m. and then have an afternoon on games, and celebration.

Plans for the Remaining Weeks

The boy tennis team was successful and will be going on to Substate.
