Art in the time of cholera

Pretty drawings of some bugs? Is this your first thought? They certainly are pretty, but looking closer, one might notice that in reality these insects are deformed, which was the result of the radiation.

Cornelia Hesse-Honegger, scientific illustrator from Switzerland, makes illustrations of morphologically disturbed insects, which she finds near the nuclear areas of the infamous places like Chernobyl, nuclear power plants in Switzerland, radiation-contaminated areas in Europe and the US.

Cornelia sketches how perfect symmetrical lines of bug surface are slightly changed, deformed by dangerous exposure.

Beautiful but scary.

Know your germs

Do you know how germs look? Also so that you do not feel revolted when you see them. Luke Jerram makes glass sculptures, which represent our bacteria and viruses we are scared of.

These transparent glass sculptures were created to contemplate the global impact of each disease and to consider how the artificial colouring of scientific imagery affects our understanding of phenomena. Jerram is exploring the tension between the artworks’ beauty and what they represent, their impact on humanity.

To the author’s mind, microbiologists and scientists make us believe that viruses and bacteria are bright colored, however in reality it is not always so.

The sculptures were designed in consultation with virologists from the University of Bristol using a combination of different scientific photographs and models. They were made in collaboration with glassblowers Kim George, Brian Jones and Norman Veitch.

These very strange pictures are the work of an artist from London, Petros Chrisostomou. His photographs are a practice that has enabled the artist to extrapolate ready-made objects from different environments, producing very unusual combinations.

Petros himself claims that his work is concerned with object and context relationships, and the result is pretty neat. Check it out!

Brad Pitt, 45, is starring in the upcoming Quentin Tarantino movie Inglourious Basterds, which is also due in August 2009. Meanwhile, the photo session for Wired has some seriously funny shit.

Francesco Carrozini is one of the youngest working directors, who participated in Venice Biennale art expo 2005, film series “The New York Times screen tests” and sets for Vanity Fair and such. He is quite a talent, obviously.

The Art of Lego

Jan Vormann is an artist from Berlin, who came up with an incredible idea of putting Lego bricks to repair ancient walls.
The artist has done installations in Italy, Israel and Berlin. Vormann calls his art Dispatchwork.

Atelier Exquise is a showroom, design studio, kitchen and a small apartment for Exquise Design in Paris. Exquise is a team of three female designers focusing on designing contemporary lovetoys.

The new space is a meeting place for creatives where they can cook both ideas and food. Designed by Stockholm-based Electric Dreams, the space starts with white walls, ceiling and floor. To this simple backdrop, spurts of electric and luminous pinks, blues, purples, greens and yellow, add a feel of lightness and delight.

Media architecture collective Urban Alliance has recently finished the Moodwall: a 24-meter long interactive light installation in Amsterdam. The Moodwall is located in a pedestrian tunnel and it interacts with people who pass through.
