Project Mambo - Oliver Hannah promo

Oliver Hannah, a dance instructor and performer in Philadelphia, has a new promotional video for his Project Mambo dance company brand. His principal dance partner is rising star Jenn Corea, and the video was produced by Philadelphia based AR Creative, a multimedia storytelling group.

You can find Oliver teaching classes at Salsita Dance Studio in South Philly, and at the University City Arts League in West Philly.

Note: Oliver is also the husband of Nuevotec correspondent Jessica Hannah, and has shot for us. Amy Rymer of AR Creative has shot for NT as well.

Constelacion Latina at the Festival Mundial de Salsa Cali 2009

In November of 2009, Albert Gomez of Toronto’s Strickly Salsa attended the Festival Mundial de Salsa Cali, Colombia’s largest salsa caleño competition. He put together a highlights video of the the top three places of the individual couples cabaret competition, all of which are members of the talented Constelacion Latina dance company. Watch these incredible flips and aerial tricks in the video below, and don’t try this at home. Thanks to Sonya Dessurealt for the link.

Fabrice Calmels from 30 Seconds of Dance also brought a film crew down to Cali to film this incredible team. He captured a fantastic street performance where the dancers are in street clothes, and are doing some flying tricks. Why aren’t the guys flying? Check the video below.

Hope for Haiti fundraiser at Yesenia’s Dance Factory

The devastating earthquake that hit the nation of Haiti on January 12, 2010 has quickly mobilized support from all around the world, including the salsa dance community.

In New Jersey, Yesenia Peralta’s Dance Factory studio is organizing an event this Friday, January 29, in Union City. Yesenia has told us that 100% of the proceeds are going to the Yele Haiti Foundation. She’s invited artists including Sekou McMiller and Duplessey Walker to appear at the fund raising social.

For those in South California, Susannah Kloepfer with Salsalegra.com is cohosting a fund raising event on February 4 in Burbank, and there’s another event on Sunday, February 7 in Hollywood hosted by Yari More (representing the Latin music community with several bands).

Mike from SalsaTO.ca is hosting their “Dance and Donate” fundraiser on Monday, February 1st in Toronto.

Salsa @ the Empire State Building!

Anyone who is remotely into the Salsa/Mambo scene knows that Marlon International and Mike Peña put on some of the best Salsa events in the greater NY area. By providing Salseros with some of the most elegant venues, renown live salsa bands and DJ’s, and amazing performance this duo have set quite a high bar when it comes to salsa socials. Well, they have managed to raise the bar and make history by hosting the FIRST EVER Salsa social in the Empire State Building in NYC. 4th annual World Salsa Championships - December 16-19,2009

In the latest Albert Torres newsletter from August 5, the dates for the delayed 4th annual World Salsa Championships have been announced for December 16-19, 2009, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The venue has yet to be announced.

First started in 2005, the World Salsa Championships is promoted by a group called the Salsa Seven. Led by Albert Torres and ESPN producer Rob Beiner, the first two events (held in Las Vegas) built the foundation to bring salsa dancing to the mainstream. Buzz and word spread quickly, and the 3rd annual event was broadcast in the U.S. and international markets on ESPN and was hosted at Disney’s Coronado Springs. Unfortunately, the 4th annual event was postponed in 2008, even though many dancers had already qualified for the semi-final round of the championships.

We hope the venue is announced soon. Thanks to all the hard work from Albert Torres and the Salsa Seven.

Eli Torres and Yen Dorado win the 2009 Mayan Competition

Congratulations to Philadelphia’s Eli Torres and Yen Dorado, who recently won the individual 2009 Mayan Competition professional title on May 16 in Los Angeles. Veterans of both the Puerto Rico Open Championships and World Salsa Championships, Eli and Yen beat 2nd place couple Cristian Oviedo & Liz Lira and 3rd place couple Luis Aguilar & Shirley Amador.

2010 New Jersey Salsa Congress

It’s official! In April 2010, the Sheraton Meadowlands hotel in East Rutherford will be the home of the first annual New Jersey Salsa Congress.

Mario “B” Gonzales and the staff from the Salsa Fever on2 Dance Academy announced the big news at its NJ Mambo Night Out party in Newark this past Saturday. Even we were not aware of the news until 30 minutes before the actual announcement (Special thanks to Mary Jane from Salsa Fever, who told us to be ready for something big at the party).

Mario has wanted to do a large event in his home state for some time, as New Jersey hasn’t hosted a large scale event in recent years besides the 2006 NY/NJ Salsa Festival (Nelson Flores and Luis Zegarra). The performer and instructor, who is also recovering from a major car accident, aims to bring together the different salsa schools, students, and dancers together for a four day weekend with live music, workshops, and parties.

Burju Shoes NYC Launch Party April 21

Burju Hurturk from the acclaimed Hacha y Machete dance company in Boston is not only a talented performer and instructor, but a shoe designer as well with her Burju Shoes brand.

We’ve seen Burju as a shoe vendor at several salsa congresses, aiming for performers and casual dancers. Not content with just the dancing market, she’s also expanding her reach into the bridal clientele.

After holding a runway show with models showing off her wares in Boston in 2008, Burju is making a splash in New York. Tomorrow, April 21 at the Nest Lounge on 215 West 28th St, Burju is hosting her Burju Shoes NYC launch party. She’s featuring several salsa dancers who will model her dance shoes, and non-dancers who will model her other lines of shoes.
