National Trails Day Walk

June 2, 2012

Join volunteer Rudy Gornik for a walk to celebrate National Trails Day. Walking is a low impact form of exercise and has low impact on the environment as well. Wildwood walks can bring pleasant surprises like seeing turtles and egrets or hearing red-winged blackbirds and Rudy’s jokes will make the miles fly by. The 3-mile walk on easy trails with short climbs will be at a moderate pace of 2-3 miles per hour. Bring water and wear sturdy shoes.

When and Where: 1 pm - 3 pm; Meet at the Olewine Nature Center.

Bird Banding Demonstration

June 3, 2012

Join licensed bird bander Sandy Lockerman as she conducts research on the birds that make Wildwood Park their home. Learn about the equipment, nets, and bands used for banding and local banding projects. If the weather does not cooperate, an indoor program about banding will be substituted.

When and Where: 1 pm - 3 pm; Meet at the Olewine Nature Center.

Did you know that you can "adopt" a turtle from Wildwood Park?

May 23rd is World Turtle Day! This annual event was started by the American Tortoise Rescue in 2000 to celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises around the world.

Did you know that Wildwood Park right here in Harrisburg has an adopt-a-turtle program?

Your donation of $20 will make it possible for a microchip numbered PIT (Passive Integrated Transponder) tag to be safely implanted in turtles in Wildwood Lake. It supports study of the growth and development of turtles when they are recaptured at future intervals. Wildwood Park environmental educators with the support of the Friends of Wildwood are partnering with the biology department at Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA for this research.

As a donor you will receive a certificate, a PIT tag registration number and your turtle's species. You will be able to locate your PIT tag number on the Friends of Wildwood website when your turtle is recaptured for study and measurements. All turtles will be released back into Wildwood Lake.

Here is a picture of the turtle we adopted at last month's Wetlands Festival, Mr. Turtle:
