Apple prosegue nella sua "campagna acquisti"  e dopo aver acquisito Anobit, l'azienda israeliana produttrice di memorie flash, ha scelto il motore di ricerca sviluppato da Chomp come ulteriore risorsa per migliorare le performance dell'ecosistema di servizi che ruotano attorno agli iDevice. Si ritiene, infatti, che l'acquisizione possa essere finalizzata a migliorare gli strumenti di ricerca delle applicazioni in App Store.

Il costo dell'operazione non è ancora stato reso noto, ma le finalità sembrano essere piuttosto chiare: l'App Store ha funzionalità di ricerca più limitate rispetto a quelle offerte da Chomp che può essere consultato sia tramite la versione web, sia tramite un'apposita applicazione sviluppata per i device Android commercializzati da Verizion.

Grazie a Chomp è possibile individuare con facilità le applicazioni giornalmente proposte gratuitamente, le applicazioni più "gettonate" del momento, le più vendute in assoluto, quelle più popolari su Twitter e quelle introdotte più recentemente.

E' verosimile ipotizzare che, a seguito dell'acquisizione di Chomp, funzioni analoghe potranno essere integrate direttamente nell'App Store. Non si conosce ancora il destino del sito web e del client Android a seguito dell'acquisizione. In attesa di ulteriori dettagli a riguardo, sembra che i dirigenti di Chomp abbiano già iniziato a lavorare per Cupertino: i due ex-Amministratori Delegati Ben Keighran e Cathy Edwards sono diventati rispettivamente membro del team Marketing di iTunes e Ingegnere Senior di iTunes.

Introducing the Seasonic Platinum Series 860W

In a short time we've seen quite a few companies come out with their first 80 Plus Platinum power supplies. A couple weeks ago we reviewed the Enermax Platimax with 750W, which was a good PSU even though our testing showed slightly less than the advertised efficiency. Enermax also has a 500W Platimax unit, and there are several other brands launching or ready to launch 80 Plus Platinum offerings. Today we'll look at another sample, this time in the form of Seasonic's Platinum Series 860W.

One thing that all of the 80 Plus Platinum models have in common is that they are very expensive. Something else to consider is that there are only a limited number of companies that actually manufacture PSUs, building various models according to the specifications their partners request. Seasonic is one such company, and we can expect other brands to use variations of the Seasonic Platinum Series we're reviewing today. The 860W model we're looking at includes two different modes for controlling the fan speed, a fullly modular connector system, and DC-to-DC converters for two of the smaller output voltages.

It's been nearly a year since we reviewed Seasonic's X-560 80 Plus Gold power supply, and it's still one of the best PSUs available. The Platinum Series looks set to continue from where the X-Series left off, as their new Platinum Series is very similar to the previous generation Gold products in many respects. Which raises an interesting question: are they even able to surpass their previous generation, especially when we factor in pricing and availability? On the following pages we will show the differences between the new series and the older models, along with all the important measurements and test results.

While efficient PSUs are all the marketing rage in the world of power supplies, we should keep in mind that many manufacturers are trying to reach 80 Plus Platinum levels via "cheap tricks". Enermax and FSP decided to cut the EMI filtering while SuperFlower still has an aversion to over current protection. Shunt resistors for example transform some of the power into power loss when current flows through it, since there is a voltage drop, but that's actually their job as they measure and prevent overcurrent. We are looking forward to see a better solution from Seasonic — which doesn't mean other solutions would be bad.

You’ve got all the gear you need to tear up the club, and you’ve mastered every transition tutorial you’ve found online- but here’s a dirty little secret: No matter how fresh your gear is, it’s useless if you don’t have great music to play. In today’s toolbox, Meatman takes some time to share his process of crate digging in the digital DJ realm of the internet. We’ve written about this previously, so enjoy this update for 2012!

Now before we start dropping dope sets, it’s important to have a game plan. Just like a hunter stalks its prey, a DJ needs to understand and stalk the intricate web of old and current music scenes to find the music that best suits his/her needs. Thanks to the internet, there are several tools for that:

Discogs is arguably the most important tool for any musician or music lover seeking to explore new music. It’s a comprehensive library of practically any song, album or label you can think of all built by its vibrant, music-loving community.For DJs it’s particularly useful for understanding the relationship that labels, artists and releases have with each other.

Here’s a scenario that shows the typical Discogs expirience:

I was listening to a dubstep mix on BBC Radio One several years back. About 20 minutes in I heard a track I really liked. I looked the mix up, found a track listing, and after cross-referencing some tracks on YouTube, I finally found this magical track. It was called “The Goat Stare” by a producer named Loefah. I immediately went to Discogs and searched for it – it turns out that track was on the the sixth release from a UK-based label called DMZ (or DMZ 006).  I also found out that Loefah released this track with another track, called “Root“, giving me perspective about the release in context.

I also checked out Loefah’s artist page, which chronologically organizes every single one of his releases across a span of labels. Even further, Discogs has a feature that allows users to create lists of their favorite artists and releases. I happened to find this gem from DMZ 006′s page too, leading me to almost 100 more tracks to check out.

Just from that one single track, I was able to find not only the track that it was released with, but the label, related artists, and relevant releases. This gave me access more than 100 quality tracks that made me excited to play out. The best DJs don’t play arbitrary tracks at the same BPM, there’s a meaning and a flow to their sets and with a tool like Discogs, you can understand what tracks can flow together and why.

A plan like this will help you give your mixes a deeper, smarter edge and is well worth the extra effort if done right.

TL;DR: You’re a music detective. Discogs is full of incredible clues. If you don’t use it when scouring for music, you’re actually missing out.

Last.fm, the unofficial encyclopedia of music: it’s great tool for exploring new music and even stumbling upon new genres that you may have never heard of. Type in practically any artist, for any genre of music, and you’ll be rewarded with a wiki-style entry for the artist or band. Some have more info than others and it’s common courtesy to add or modify information about artists that you know about.

Probably the coolest part about Last.FM  is their free on-demand radio station. Similar to Pandora, Last.fm radio allows you to search an artist, genre, or keyword, and generate a practically endless spring of music based on your keywords.

I really suggest you try it. Actually, go right now. Type in an artist or genre, and come back here. You can keep pressing next for other related tracks, or if you’d like, you can sign up for a Last.fm account and flag the tracks you dig so you can check them out later.

Mixcloud provides you with fantastic framework for following your favorite DJ’s and producers’s mixes. You can explore mixes from practically any major DJ on the planet giving you inspiration in not only song selection, but also mix technique. Plus, looking through sets can give you a really good starting point for finding new music. Mixcloud’s users are required to include a detailed set list along with their uploaded mixes, so you wont have to worry about going on a hunt for a track you like.

Blogs are another great way to find new music – but often times the process of finding blogs and keeping track of their new content and music posts can be exhausting, even with an RSS reader.

Music blog aggregators solve this problem by collecting content from tens of thousands of blogs and allowing users to vote on new tracks that they love, and Hype Machine has the king of this process for about four years now. Be sure to check out the “top” lists once every few days, especially if you’re looking for great new remixes of more popular songs.

Lastly, I’ve found Wikipedia to be very helpful in my hunt for new music. Wikipedia is excellent for several reasons, and while Wikipedia’s music community isn’t as vibrant as Discogs’s, music-realted articles can be useful for understanding the historical background of genres. Understanding where the music came from, how it has evolved, and what artists were involved in building the genre is an instrumental part of finding good music.

For instance, a quick search for Drum & Bass finds us at a large article discussing the history, evolution, and current state of the Drum & Bass scene. You learn about the distinguishing features of sub-genres like jungle, jump-up and liquid, and the contributions that producers like DJ Hype and Roni Size have had on the genre. Understanding these details is really, really important to keep in mind as a DJ and can help keep your set consistent and well thought out.

Again, Wikipedia is not necessarily good for finding information on individual tracks, but more for understanding the complex evolution of music scenes, giving you a greater perspective of what exactly you’re playing and what you’re trying to find next.

Final Thoughts

Whichever tool you use, the DJ’s individual music discovery process is the most defining characteristics of being a DJ. It can be strenuous putting in all of the track digging work needed to make good, regular DJ sets – but think of it as the homework that pays off when exam time comes around. Using the above resources, it’s crucial to take some time regularly to freshen up your library and find new artists, genres, and tracks that make you excited about playing music.

In a recent editorial at The Wall Street Journal, FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell blasted the upcoming ITU World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT-12). According to McDowell, Russia, China, and their allies at the ITU want to monitor all internet communications, allow foreign companies to charge for international internet traffic “perhaps even on a per-click basis,” impose economic regulations, take over ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), and conquer the Internet Engineering Task Force.

McDowell reaches a bombastic crescendo by claiming that the treaty will more-or-less destroy everything, everywhere, writing: “Productivity, rising living standards and the spread of freedom everywhere, but especially in the developing world, would grind to a halt as engineering and business decisions become politically paralyzed within a global regulatory body.”

The FCC Commissioner’s threat assessment is completely out-of-step with the US government’s opinion, as shown in a leaked memo from January 23, 2012. The memo notes that while there was “great and widespread concern” a year ago that WCIT-12 would be a battle over the role the ITU should play in internet governance, the US spent 12 months working to limit the scope and nature of the issues that will be considered at the treaty negotiations. As a result, “There are no pending proposals to invest the ITU with ICANN-like Internet governance authority. Neither cybersecurity nor Internet governance predominate discussion in any region.”

Among the charges leveled at the ITU are claims that the treaty could “Impose unprecedented economic regulations such as mandates for rates, terms and conditions for currently unregulated traffic-swapping agreements known as ‘peering.’” As we’ve said, there’s literally no such agreement under consideration — but the inclusion of this point sheds light on why certain parties are so interested in keeping this issue in the news.

Under the current unregulated peering system, foreign ISPs pay US ISPs a fee to carry internet traffic, which means US companies make a tidy sum of cash off foreign access. If internet servers were truly decentralized — the “Balkanization” McDowell fears — US ISPs would end up paying considerably more money to their foreign counterparts.

Those bright white lines aren’t just revenue sources, they’re control linkages. If you work for the MPAA/RIAA or back laws like SOPA and PIPA, those links are absolutely vital. Any attempt to create an international system of internet governance would weaken the RIAA and MPAA’s efforts to implement SOPA-style censorship. Both bills were aimed at restricting and controlling foreign internet traffic, which means both intrinsically assumed that such traffic would be flowing through the United States.

An equally distributed intra-planetary internet would still take geolocation into account for routing and access purposes, but would effectively eliminate the concept of “foreign” websites. SOPA and PIPA were meant to be palatable to the general US population precisely because they exploited an us/them mentality and claimed to be protecting America. If internet control were to shift towards nations that favored fewer copyright restrictions, internet access as a human right, and limited punishment for piracy, it would be a serious threat to content distributors.

McDowell’s claims are factually inaccurate and hyperbolic. They paint a false dichotomy between the idea that the internet today is a free-wheeling, uncontrolled frontier, while the alternative is a fascist state. The internet, as it exists today, is highly regulated. Some of that regulation was inherited or expanded from the old laws governing telephone access and line-sharing, some of it is applied via laws like the DMCA. ICANN is not a direct arm of the US government, but it’s a far cry from a private corporation. The publicized debates around net neutrality and the FCC last year are further evidence that the idea of an unregulated internet is a fallacy.

At the other end of the equation, no one advocates handing over complete control of the internet to the likes of Russia, China, Myanmar, and Iran. There’s no reason not to open internet governance slowly and gradually, unless you represent a faction who views such a process as an unacceptable loss of control. Regardless of how you feel about the issue, McDowell’s editorial only clouds the debate with demagoguery. It’s a blatant attempt to fire people up emotionally with virtually no grounding in objective fact. The internet is going nowhere, regardless of what happens at the upcoming meeting. Ultimately, however, this isn’t a debate about whether the internet is regulated, but an argument over who should control the regulatory process. If US lawmakers continue pushing bills like SOPA and PIPA, they may find an increasing number of US citizens who think the UN is a more attractive alternative — a concept editorials like this are meant to thwart.

TI OMAP5 vs Nvidia 4-PLUS-1

A few days prior to Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona, several smartphone vendors and SoC manufacturers have put it on themselves to one-up each other in competitive marketing leads before the official start of the show.

Nevertheless, Texas Instruments has released a marketing video comparing an Android tablet running one of its OMAP 5 SoCs (probably an OMAP5430) with its two ARM Cortex A15 cores clocked at 800MHz against an Nvidia Tegra 3 at 1.30GHz (approximate) with its four ARM Cortex A9 cores and additional power-efficient companion core, or "ninja core" (see: Nvidia 4-PLUS-1).

The video illustrates EEMBC's BrowsingBench benchmark test in which webpage loading speeds are measured in concurrency between the tablets and the total loading time is recorded at the end. According to the results, the TI OMAP5 tablet finishes its benchmark in 95 seconds whereas the Tegra 3 tablet finishes in 201 seconds. Of course, the benchmark is completely biased in its failure to compare individual page-by-page loading speeds with one another, as it simply runs through the entire benchmark and compares overall completion times. Despite being the faster SoC, it is possible that Texas Instruments may be called out by Nvidia for this, and we are interested to hear the conversation between the two SoC giants.

We have reason to believe that the unnamed quad-core Cortex A9 (Tegra 3) tablet is an ASUS Transformer Prime running Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Meanwhile, we expect the unnamed dual-core Cortex A15 (OMAP5) tablet will be announced next week at Mobile World Congress.

Il "marketplace" di Mozilla è ormai dietro l'angolo. Seguendo la scia di Apple e Google, anche Mozilla si lancerà presto nell'agone proponendo un nuovo store virtuale attraverso il quale gli sviluppatori potranno commercializzare o semplicemente diffondere le proprie applicazioni HTML5. Il debutto dell'offerta firmata Mozilla dovrebbe arrivare nel corso della prossima edizione del "Mobile World Congress" che si terrà a Barcellona, in Spagna, dal 27 febbraio al 1° marzo.

A detta di Mozilla, la stella polare che ha guidato lo sviluppo del nuovo "marketplace" è la volontà di mettere a disposizione dei programmatori di tutto il mondo uno strumento che sappia esaltare le innovazioni senza limitare, allo stesso tempo, la libertà degli utenti. Stando a quanto emerso sul blog ufficiale della società, il negozio virtuale non aprirà i battenti prima di alcuni mesi ma, nel frattempo, a partire dall'evento iberico, gli sviluppatori potranno iniziare ad inviare le loro "creazioni".

Per i vertici di Mozilla, la piattaforma dovrebbe aiutare i programmatori a ridurre in modo sostanziale i costi per la realizzazione, l'aggiornamento e le attività di manutenzione delle applicazioni offrendo un "inedito" strumento per il collegamento diretto con la clientela. A tal proposito, i "Mozilla Labs Apps" hanno comunicato di aver messo a punto nuove interfacce per lo sviluppo, già trasmesse al W3C per richiederne la standardizzazione.

Uno speciale meccanismo in grado di stabilire, di volta in volta, l'identità dell'utente consentirà di mantenere sempre il massimo controllo sui contenuti legando le applicazioni al singolo utente piuttosto che ad un dispositivo o ad una piattaforma.
Pubblicheremo un approfondimento con maggiori dettagli non appena Mozilla avrà concluso la sua presentazione in occasione del "Mobile World Congress".

Una specie di social network

Electronic Arts ha diffuso oggi un nuovo video che spiega nel dettaglio le nuove "feature sociali" che verranno aggiunte al gioco con la nuova espansione The Sims 3 – Showtime, nel quale ci troviamo a seguire i sogni dei Sim verso il successo nello show-business di vario tipo.

Ci saranno dunque varie nuove maniere di connettere tra loro gli utenti come in una vera e propria community appartenente ad un social network. Nell'interfaccia è presente ad esempio una sorta di bacheca che riporta gli aggiornamenti e le azioni dei vari giocatori, oltre ad una nuova finestra che consente la connessione diretta con altri utenti per scambiare i messaggi.

Con la bacheca arriva anche la sezione "successi", nella quale è possibile vedere i vari obiettivi raggiunti dai vari giocatori, il tutto collegato anche al sito internet di The Sims 3. All'interno dell'interfaccia c'è anche la possibilità di inserire gli amici in un elenco a parte e stare in contatto con questi, in sostanza applicando un filtro "amici" a tutti i giocatori presenti nella community. Queste e altre sono dunque le nuove caratteristiche "sociali" inserite in The Sims 3 – Showtime, come illustrato nel video sottostante.

Cavaliere: No grazie,volevo parlare di cose piú rilevanti, mi dica la verità ma davvero volete fare un'asta onerosa per assegnare le frequenze tv? Sapete quanto mi verrà a costare?

Professore: Le aste gratuite non sono aste, come si fa, chiediamo sacrifici a tutti.
Cavaliere: Sì, ma io non sono tutti, io la sostengo lealmente, non mi deluda, pensi ai grandi temi, non alle aste, comunque i miei avvocati presenteranno decine di esposti, magari voi rinviate di qualche mese ancora, poi si vedrà.

Professore: Vogliamo parlare ora del mercato del lavoro?
Cavaliere: Per carità tema rilevante, ma già che ci siamo vogliamo parlare del prossimo presidente dell’autorità di garanzia?  Emma Marcegaglia dice che se gli imprenditori stranieri non investono in Italia è perché non possono licenziare i fannulloni e gli assenteisti cronici. E' vero e io posso dimostrarvelo.

 Facciamo un caso concreto. L’imprenditore-tipo cui si riferisce la presidente di Confindustria si prepara a partire ma, giusto un attimo prima, realizza che forse è bene informarsi sul paese nel quale vuole aprire un’impresa. Allora legge il libro di Nunzia Penelope, Soldi Rubati, e si accorge che il nostro paese brucia ogni anno circa 450 miliardi di euro tra corruzione, evasione fiscale, lavoro in nero ed economia sommersa. Non convinto – che sia un libro fazioso? – cerca altre notizie su Google e scopre che 50 imprese all’ora (quasi uno al minuto) subiscono rapine, furti, atti vandalici. Un quinto degli imprenditori. Perlopiù si tratta di richieste di pizzo o di tangenti per le gare d’appalto. Il giro d’affari annuo legato all’usura è stimato in 20 miliardi di euro per circa 200 mila esercizi commerciali interessati. E nel 44% dei casi, per un reato del genere, la sentenza di primo grado non arriva prima di quattro anni.

 Di fronte a questi numeri l’imprenditore straniero tentenna ma non desiste: si chiede allora quale sia la banca italiana con maggior liquidità cui poter chiedere più agevolmente un mutuo. Nel rapporto annuale di SOS IMPRESA, legge: “La più grande banca italiana è virtuale: si chiama mafia. Da sola, ogni anno, può contare su una liquidità di 65 miliardi, al netto delle spese per l’acquisto delle materie prime, i servizi, il personale, la latitanza e gli imprevisti che hanno una propria voce negli accantonamenti di bilancio”. La criminalità organizzata governa il mercato italiano e concorre a formare un indebitamento medio per impresa di circa 180 mila euro, cresciuto del 93% negli ultimi dieci anni.

 Niente da fare: innamorato di gondole e mandolini il nostro imprenditore non demorde. In fondo – pensa -, basta fare impresa al nord e il pizzo lo si evita. Ma poi sfoglia il più importante quotidiano di economia italiano e resta basito: le zone che soffrono maggiormente sono proprio il milanese e il nord-est, dove le banche sono restie a concedere prestiti e, non avendo liquidità, chiedono il rientro immediato dei fidi, lasciando così gli imprenditori nelle mani degli ‘ndranghetisti che offrono denaro facile a condizioni apparentemente favorevoli, fino a quando non ti costringono a chiudere bottega e a cedergli la tua attività. Del resto, mafia, camorra e ‘ndrangheta sono le uniche Spa che non conoscono crisi: secondo l’ultima Commissione Parlamentare Antimafia, infatti, fatturano qualcosa come 150 miliardi l’anno.

 A questo punto il nostro valoroso eroe inizia a vacillare seriamente. Il rischio di finire nelle mani dei criminali è troppo elevato. La partita poi è truccata: le mafie e la corruzione drogano il mercato, falsano la concorrenza e favoriscono la regolarizzazione degli extracomunitari, ma solo per sfruttarli come schiavi, al nord come al sud, nei campi di pomodoro di Rosarno come all’Ortomercato di Milano. Quella italiana è un’economia a capitale mafioso, fondata sull’evasione e sull’usura.

 Eppure vi è ancora un barlume di speranza in lui. Possibile che in Italia non si possa proprio fare business? Magari sono gli italiani ad essere troppo severi con se stessi. Allora consulta i dati della banca mondiale e trasale: nella classifica sulla facilità di fare impresa per l'anno 2012, “Doing Business”, l’Italia arriva solo all’87° posto, subito dopo la Mongolia e appena prima di Jamaica e Sri Lanka. E il trend non lascia ben sperare: quattro posizioni più in basso rispetto al 2011 e nove rispetto al 2010. Lo stivale è 77° per la facilità di aprire una nuova impresa, 96° per la concessione di licenze edilizie, 109° per la facilità di ottenere energia, 84° per la velocità nel registrare le nuove proprietà, 98° per l’accesso al credito, 134° per la pressione fiscale e 30° per la risoluzione di insolvenza.

 Ma ci sarà bene un’organizzazione degli industriali a cui rivolgersi per trovare aiuto, no? C'è, ma la sua presidente è la prima ad utilizzare procedure di ottimizzazione fiscale attraverso holding in Irlanda e Lussemburgo. E la stessa Marcegaglia Spa,nel 2008, è stata costretta a ricorrere al patteggiamento su una tangente Enipower e a pagare un risarcimento di circa 6 milioni di euro. Inoltre è attualmente in corso un’inchiesta ai danni del colosso mantovano dell’acciaio per falso in bilancio: tra il ’94 ed il 2004 sarebbe riuscito ad interporre società off shore nell’acquisto di materie prime, creando fondi neri e generando plusvalenze milionarie trasferite su conti correnti di banche svizzere intestate a società delle Bahamas, il cui beneficiario finale era Steno Marcegaglia. Salvo riuscire a far archiviare, nel maggio scorso, la parte che riguarda l’evasione fiscale, come ha scoperto Report, perché quei capitali sono stati condonati e scudati.

 L'imprenditore forestiero a questo punto sbuffa dalle possenti narici, sbatte il pugno sul tavolo, si impunta e pensa che non è possibile: lui dimostrerà che fare impresa in italia, al contrario di ogni evidenza e in spregio dei luoghi comuni, è possibile. Ed è solo a questo punto che arriva l’acutissima presidente di Confindustria a svelargli l’aspetto più tremendo e sconveniente dell’Italia: i sindacati proteggono gli assenteisti cronici, i ladri e quelli che non fanno il proprio mestiere.

 Eh no, questo è davvero troppo. Va bene l'evasione fiscale, la corruzione, le mafie, il pizzo, la 'ndrangheta, il mercato drogato, i tempi per ottenere giustizia, le classifiche della banca mondiale, i fondi neri.. Va bene tutto! Ma in un paese dove i sindacati non ti permettono di licenziare proprio no, non ha nessuna intenzione di investire.
