Shotgun Jimmie

 <itunes:author>NUTV</itunes:author>
 <itunes:subtitle>Fazal Meets up with Shotgun Jimmie and Ian from Attack in Black to chat about Shot Gun Jimmie's latest release, Still Jimmie.</itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:summary>
Mixing a charmingly lo-fi approach with a knack for quirky, hook ridden songwriting, The Onlys (Delorean Recordings, 2009), was Shotgun Jimmie's first solo outing after the demise of his band, Shotgun & Jaybird. The album quickly found an audience, as it spent several weeks in the top ten of the National Earshot campus radio charts and saw the single "Bedhead" championed by CBC Radio 3. Exclaim! said of the disc, "The Onlys is lo-fi gold, mixing smart stream-of-conscious lyricism with flashes of broke down musical skill." Not only embraced by the media though, The Onlys also found its way into the hands of Welland, Ontario's, Attack in Black.

Instantly won over by the album, the band invited Jimmie on their upcoming National tour. Leading up to the dates, the two acts regularly performed together with Attack in Black acting as Jimmie's backing band. Their musical bond was immediate. Jimmie's songs took on new dimensions with the four piece's instrumental prowess and well honed sensibilities. Following the completion of the tour, the acts decided to document the chemistry they had developed, and set out to record in Attack in Black's home studio.

The resulting, Still Jimmie, shifts from Shotgun Jimmie's playful approach on The Onlys to a darker and more direct, rock record. "Mind Crumb" starts with urgent guitars and crashing drums, only to drift into a winding Neil Young-esque haze of guitar squalls. "Used Parts" is ramshackle pop craftsmanship at its best, as hooks come and go seemingly without effort. The rest of Still Jimmie manages to balance songs as opposed as "Louis Depson" and"Dawson City" without ever straying from a core sound.
</itunes:summary>

Sleepy Sun

 <itunes:subtitle>On The Verge meets up with Sleepy Sun to chat about the band and the weirdness of Santa Cruz</itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:summary>Sleepy Sun is an apt title for this young San Francisco sextet, as their debut record, "Embrace", is one of those rare slabs of rock and roll that will wake you up in the morning, and send you off to sleep at night. After honing their craft in the occult influenced creative community of Santa Cruz, the band has continued to grow, both creatively and in their loyal following, since their relocation to the city by the bay. With their throbbing rhythm section, swirling sea of guitars, and dreamy, haunting duet vocals, the word dynamic is a severe understatement.

Though the press is quick to rifle off a laundry list of rock's greatest ghosts to describe their sound, one live show is all you need to know Sleepy Sun have stumbled upon something very much their own. Having performed their raw, high energy show on stages shared with acts such as Howlin' Rain, Earth, Dead Meadow, and Citay, they are quickly establishing themselves as a very tough act to follow.

Sweethearts of the Science Fair EP, 2001

About The Maynards

Just as the dance floors began to clear and the damage from 2005's Break Out The Make Out had been assessed, The Maynards have returned with their latest collection of party rock anthems. With crashing beats, gritty guitars and tales of weak knees and cold hearts, Date and Destroy is not just and invitation, it's an instigation.

Starting in 1999 as an outlet for Heath Matheson (vocals, guitar), Kristina Parlee (vocals, bass) and Chantal Tardiff's (vocals, drums) mutual fascination with science fiction and dancing, the bands' formative years were spent pushing a decidedly lo-fi yet high-octane brand of rock 'n roll all over Halifax. This period saw the group produce three acclaimed EPs as well as their debut LP, The Maynards Stole Your Lunch Money.

In 2005, The Maynards returned with their sophomore full length, Break Out the Make Out. Turning teen angst into rock anthems and sci-fi fandom into dance hits, the album quickly rose to sit in the top 10 of Earshot National Campus Charts. Exclaim! said of the band "What's not to like about the Maynards? Their snappy-but-scrappy take on nouveau garage pop is all about clever jabs and cynicisms, and their new disc is a slightly flirtatious, mostly friendly smack in the face."

On Date and Destroy, the band returns with eleven tales of romantic casualty. Leading off with the careful footing of "Spinny", the album offers a deceitfully sweet opener for a set of songs that deliver a slash and burn approach to garage rock. From the title track's echoing drums to "Mine Got Dirty's" manic guitar work, the disc writhes in raw energy. While incanting artists such as The Sonics and Screaming Jay Hawkins, The Maynards make it clear that in their eyes, the only good heart is a broken one.

 <itunes:subtitle>On The Verge meets up with Mitch Barany to chat about the making of the video "city of noise".</itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:summary>
Back in 2005, The Summerlad composed and performed a 40+ minute opus for One Yellow Rabbit's annual High Performance Rodeo. The composition, called City of Noise, took four months to write and the final ensemble included a nine-person guitar orchestra, two drummers, keyboards, and four vocalists. The band also collaborated with a filmmaker to put together a 24-hour film of a city and used that as the backdrop to perform the piece live.

Fast Forward to 2008 and The Summerlad release their 3rd full length CD, City of Noise. The CD consists of 2 two self titled tracks, one, the full length version performed at the High Performance Rodeo, and the other, an energetic four-minute rock number. The band also made a video for the latter track on the CD. Written and directed by Mitch Barany, the video took a year to complete. Imagine MC Escher meets Rene Magritte, Alice in Wonderland meets Gulliver's Travels, or Michel Gondry meets Tool. Needless to say, the video was well worth the wait and was nominated for the 2008 Joe Media and NFB Best of Alberta Shorts Awards.
</itunes:summary>
