This year’s Student Summer Institute will take place  Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., from July 6 through July 17, on George Mason University’s Fairfax campus.The Student Summer Institute is an enrichment opportunity for students who:

• Enjoy writing and have a serious interest in it
• Are willing to share their own writing and help other students improve their writing
• Want to improve their writing skills and develop their own style
• Want to explore a variety of writing experiences with a wide range of strategies

Participants can expect:

• Lots of daily writing time
• Participation in the full writing process, including revision and publication
• Sharing writing in small groups
• Participation in interest groups and workshops devoted to various aspects of writing
• Honest, thoughtful responses to writing and respect for participants’ sensibilities
• Individual conferences with, and direct instruction from, NVWP Teacher/Consultants
• Opportunity for computer writing
• Publication party to celebrate student writing
• Advanced Institute for grades 11 & 12: an overnight camp experience with writing-intensive activities
• Opportunities to work with visiting published authors
• Lots of fun!

Tuition for students who will be in grades 5-10 in the 2009-2010 school year is $375.

Tuition for students who will be in grades 11 & 12 in the 2009-2010 school year is $415 (includes overnight on 7/9).

For Students

The Young Writers’ Workshops are one-day workshops where students get to choose the sessions they would like to attend. The staff welcomes interested students and motivated writers in grades 5-12. Classes are run by NVWP Teacher/Consultants, some of the best teachers in Northern Virginia. Classes are small, with an average ratio of twelve students to one Teacher/Consultant. The cost of the workshop is $60.00.

• Writing from Personal Experience
• Visualization
• Theater Sports
• Mystery Stories
• Science Fiction Stories
• Short Stories
• Fantasy Stories
• Scriptwriting
• Poetry
• Dialogue & Characterization
• College Application Essay Writing (open to grades 10-12 ONLY)

For Parents

Parents are invited to attend a discussion on writing as a family. This discussion is free of charge and will take place from 11:50 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on both dates. There is no need to notify us in advance if you wish to attend this discussion.

Paid Parents’ Workshop

In addition, we are offering parents the opportunity to participate in a writing workshop. On November 1, the topic will be Poetry. On November 8, the topic will be Family Stories. The Parents’ Workshop takes place from 10:20 a.m. to 11:40 a.m., and costs $20.00.

Please Note:

The deadline for registering for the Fall 2008 Young Writers’ Workshops is October 19. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. The workshops invariably fill up well in advance of the registration deadline, so get yours in early.

Because space is limited and demand is high, we ask that you register for only one date. Registrations for more than one date will not be accepted; we will ask you to choose just one.

If you are registering more than one student, you must complete a separate registration for each one.
