I have never had a problem with Seaspecs. Don't wear cheap sunglasses. They dilate your eyes and make the problem worse. Rub a little surf wax on the lenses every few sessions and water rolls right off. An optometrist told me that useful trick.

Cheap enough to lose/break and UV 400. They work under a helmet and I use cheap knockoff croakies.

So I've been kiting with sunglasses for probably 21 years of my 22 years of kiting. I've purchased the expensive "windsurfing/waterperson" brand they make. I've owned a couple pair which now are sacrifices to the wind and surf gods. I've also used whatever that was available to me as I hate looking at the sun and reflective light as it makes me squint and doing that for hours gives me a headache. Afternoon/evening sessions in the ocean and having your baseball cap on takes all the sun glare pain out the session. The tacks out towards Japan are so much more comfortable when one has that baseball cap on and the hat's bill is blocking you from the direct sunlight from the sun.

I now just purchase the UV, polarized, plastic lensed, safety type and this is my method of keeping them on me and not losing them. Usually $10 - $20.

I have a dedicated "on the water" baseball cap and sunglasses for kiting, fly-fishing, and SUP'ing. I use old kite line and tie a 6'' or less line from the back adjustment strap on the hat to my croakies, at the middle point of the croakies. The croakies are nothing special, nor do they float. What they do do, is I'm able to position the croakies all the way up to frame joint (probably like 5'' plus), so it is very difficult to pull/take them off with whatever type of force (crash, Ocean wave tumble cycle, etc etc). The croakies I use also have a cinching ball/piece of synthetic cloth, where I can cinch the croakies right up to the back of my head, making if very difficult for force (crash, ocean wave tumble, etc etc).

Back to the kite line attached to the croakies. . . The tail not attached to the hat is probably 3' long and I tie that end to my wetsuit elastic chest cinch with a couple of half hitch knots (Ocean 5/4 suit since I mainly ride in the Pacific). Or if I'm wearing a different suit in the river, I tie that tail onto my wetsuit zipper in the back. If my hat and glasses do come off, they are still attached to me.

Fogging can be a pain and if it doesn't go away, I can easily take off my glasses and let them hang around my neck. They are more than secure with the kite line and the croakies. And when i want or need them again, they are right there.

If I was a beginner, I'd probably lose more hats and sunglasses (or brake sunglasses) as I'd crash more or get caught up in the ocean wave wash cycles.

I’ve sacrificed countless pairs of prescription shades to the river gods. You’ll want not just a retainer, but a bright colored, floating retainer or band. Chums makes em. Even if they float, you might not ever see them again. (Nearsighted, and waves)

Since I need prescription glasses, and wearing contacts in the river is kind of gross, I used my union safety glasses benefits to buy Wiley X frames, with safety lenses. They are both UV and polarized. If you are foiling, eye protection is a good idea.

With a strap, plus a helmet, I haven’t lost a pair in a while.

The water droplets are no big deal, fogging on cold days can be a hassle. Cataract surgery is no fun, and poking your eye out with a hydro foil just isn’t that great of a sea tale. But you do get a pirate eye patch. Arrrgh.
