After practice, they headed over to the garden to collect crops for the Food Pantry. With the help from Master Gardener Charlotte Hewitt, the boys harvested Radishes, Beans, Peas, and Lettuce today. We have lettuce, beans, and radishes ready to donate to the food pantry. Want to lend a hand with the harvest? A group of 8 people from the community and the school had a “planting party” and filled the raised beds with donated seeds and seedlings. We should have a lot of nice vegetables for the students to harvest this fall. We planted peppers, peas, beans, tomatoes, kale, brussel sprouts, lettuce, chard, radishes, carrots, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash, a large variety of herbs and, of course, sunflowers. The next step in this project is to make sure we get a fence around our plants before the deer find this garden and make a salad bar out of it. We will keep you posted.</p> <p>Volunteers are always needed to help weed and ma<a href="http://www.northwarren.k12.ny.us/garden/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/018.jpg"></a>intain the garden. Everyone and anyone can be a volunteer. Stop by any Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday morning between 8:00 – 9:30. We could not have done it without you.</p> </article> <article> <h1>Basketball Super Stars Help at The Garden</h1> <p>nwgarden — Tue, 28 Jun 2011 21:01:32 +0000</p> <p>Late morning on June 28, 2011, some of North Warren’s future basketball superstars helped at the new garden behind the school. JV and Varsity basketball players, who had just finished a rigorous workout, were asked by Mrs. Kubaryk, North Warren’s middle school social studies teacher to shovel dirt. The dirt went into raised beds made previously by the Roots and Shoots garden group. Donations of dirt and horse poop from Ridin’ Hi Ranch and Nemecs kept the boys busy shoveling.
