NYRR and the Club Council developed points races to foster more local interest and competition in New York City, and clubs accumulate points through the year based on finishing places in each points race. Join NYRR by January 31, 2011 to ensure that you are able to take part in the 9+1 program. It’s simple. Become a member by January 31, run nine races, and volunteer for one*, all in 2011. After that, it’s just you and the ING New York City Marathon 2012
Become a member.

There are 10K, half-marathon, and relay options, although none of the distances are USATF certified. This is a free event put on by local crazed runners, and all finishers will receive a disco ball necklace! The race starts at 11:00am, so you’ve got enough of the morning to sleep off that hangover, lace up your shoes and start off 2011 the right way.

• There were 35,666 applicants. 34,415 applied through the lottery; the rest qualified for guaranteed entry by meeting time standards.
• Out of 27,737 lottery applicants from the tristate area, 3,344 were accepted; more than 1,000 other tristate runners qualified for guaranteed entry by meeting time standards.
• NYRR limited the NYC Half field to 9,500 participants because it’s a loop course in Central Park. Last year, with 11,000 participants, the frontrunners almost ran into the back of the field.
• The field will be approximately 15% international, 40% national, and 45% tristate.
• Any member of NYRR as of January 31, 2011 who completes four of the five NYRR Half-Marathon Series races in 2011 (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island) will be eligible for guaranteed entry to the 2012 NYC Half.

After the NYC Half debacle yesterday, Sean @ NYRR reached out to me this morning. The good news is they recognize that people are angry, and have reached out to my blog and a couple of others here in NY to try and get a dialog going with the community. Hey, it’s not going to change what happened yesterday, but it’s a start, right?

But today, NYRR wants to reconcile with hometown runners and has reached out to me to host forum to filter your concerns and field your questions about the NYC Half. They hope to send you some answers by the end of the day. So – to make it happen, I need your comments.

NYRR wants to:

1) Hear your thoughts on what happened with the lottery
2) Field suggestions for what they can do differently in the future
3) Take any questions you have for NYRR as an organization about the NYC Half

The NYC Half is built on the model of the INGNYC Marathon. It’s a world-class event that draws its field from around the world. As with the marathon, we segment the lottery into international, national, and local applicants. Understandably, local interest in the NYC Half is disproportionately high.

We care deeply about you and hear your concerns, so we are building a guaranteed entry program for 2012.
