The 2011 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree will be lit for the first time on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 with live and taped performances from 7 P.M. – 9 P.M., at Rockefeller Plaza, between West 48th & West 51st Streets and 5th and 6th Avenues, Manhattan.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is a world-wide symbol of the holidays in New York City. The tree, traditionally a Norway Spruce, is illuminated by 30,000 environmentally friendly LED lights on five miles of wire, and crowned by a Swarovski crystal star. Tens of thousands crowd the sidewalks for the event and hundreds of millions watch the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony broadcast live across the globe.

The Pulse Ensemble Theater will be performing Shakespeare's Macbeth from August 12th through the 28th on Wednesday through Sundays at 7:30pm in the Riverbank State Park outdoor amphitheater.

Travel directions: #1 subway to 145th Street & Broadway, walk one block east to Riverside Drive and straight into the Park. Walk in direction of the river; Arts Building is on your left. Or ride M11 Bus (until 7 PM) or BX 19 directly into Riverbank State Park.

General seating; running time 1:45 (no intermission). Admission is free and you can find more information about the company on their website or by phone at 212-695-1596.

A description of the production from the company:

Wednesday shows have been added for the culminating event of Pulse Ensemble Theatre's twentieth season, its production of "Macbeth," directed by Alexa Kelly, at Riverbank State Park August 12-28. The innovative adaptation sets the Scottish Tragedy in a conflict zone of the 21st century, in an occupied Islamic country not unlike Afghanistan, where Macbeth is a power hungry U.S. Army officer, Duncan is a warlord and the Witches are local war widows. The tension mounts until Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are brought down by their own greed, guilt and fear. The schedule is now Wednesdays through Sundays at 7:30 PM for all performances.

The American premiere of "The Dybbuk" by Julia Pascal opens on August 10th at the Johnson Theater. A description of the production from the show's web page:

The Dybbuk is a modern play inspired by Solomon Anski’s great Yiddish classic. Pascal’s Dybbuk starts in Germany where Judith, a British atheist Jew, looks at today’s Germany and feels that Hitler has won. Judith is haunted by thoughts of her lost family and this leads her in to a dream world haunted by ghosts - or dybbuks.

She imagines a ghetto somewhere in Eastern Europe where five non-religious Jews live their final day before transportation to Auschwitz. In this ghetto, the five Jews argue, discuss cabbala, love, sex and death, relate fragments of their lives, play out half remembered scenes from the myth of The Dybbuk (which inspired Anski) and dream of full bellies.

The actual Dybbuk myth is encapsulated in a play world which the Jews walk in and out of, where finally the possession of the young girl’s body by the spirit of her dead lover, is evoked in a four minute Expressionist dance.

The show is 90 minutes long, tickets are $15, and is part of the Dream Up Festival. The following is a schedule of performances:

Zwelethu Mthethwa Inner Views

Zwelethu Mthethwa: Inner Views brings together three series by South African photographer Zwelethu Mthethwa (b. 1960). “Interiors” and “Empty Beds” document the domestic lives of migrant workers around Johannesburg, South Africa, while “Common Ground” focuses on the shared experience of natural disasters in urban areas, featuring houses in New Orleans, Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina and on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa, after wildfires.

Usable Pasts 2009-10 Artists in Residence: Mequitta Ahuja, Lauren Kelley and Valerie Piraino

In this year’s installment of the much anticipated Artist-in-Residence exhibition, Mequitta Ahuja (b. 1976), Lauren D. Kelley (b. 1975) and Valerie Piraino (b. 1981) display diverse projects in a range of media, all visually addressing the construction of history and memory. Ahuja makes lush paintings in which mythological warriors and demigods move between landscape, self-portraiture and abstraction; Kelley crafts stop-motion animations and sculptural installations telling stories of material and emotional excess; Piraino repurposes family artifacts to create installations drawing attention to the frames that shape experience and memory.

Inside the Collection: Interiors from the Studio Museum features an intimate selection of photographs in the Museum’s holdings that focus on indoor scenes and spaces. Organized as a complement to Zwelethu Mthethwa: Inner Views, Inside the Collection allows glimpses into a variety of domestic spaces at different moments. The works on view range from pieces created in the early twentieth century to those made during the last five years and features artists including Adia Millett, Frank Stewart, and Carrie Mae Weems.

Hi-Res is the annual exhibition featuring the work of high school participants in the Expanding the Walls: Making Connections to Photography, History and Community program. Student photographs will be displayed along with work by quintessential Harlem photographer James VanDerZee, whose work they have studied and used as inspiration. This year celebrates both the tenth anniversary of the program and the first year using color digital photography.

Harlem Postcards Sanford Biggers, Tiara Hernandez, Hew Locke and Ginger Brooks Takahashi

Throughout the twentieth century, Harlem has been regarded as a beacon of African-American history and culture. Sites such as the Apollo Theater, Abyssinian Baptist Church, and Malcolm X Corner at 125th Street and Seventh Avenue serve as popular postcard images that represent significant places and moments in this community. Today, Harlem continues to evolve as a center of history and culture. Everyday, residents, experienced tourists, and visitors from all over the world witness its changes are. Harlem Postcards, an ongoing project, invites contemporary artists of diverse backgrounds to reflect on Harlem as a site of cultural activity, political vitality, visual stimuli, artistic contemplation and creative production. Representing intimate and dynamic perspectives of Harlem, the images reflect each artist’s oeuvre with an idiosyncratic snapshot taken of, or representing, this historic locale. Each photograph has been reproduced as a limited-edition postcard available free to visitors. This season we are pleased to feature postcard images created by Sanford Biggers, Tiara Hernandez, Hew Locke and Ginger Brooks Takahashi.

A little more about the show from the show's website:

An edgy, sexy contemporary two-person musical scored with an original array of contemporary punk, pop, rock, and infused jazz, LOVERS, explores the darker side of a relationship spanning over a couple's journey from idealistic beginnings to cruel realities.

Chip and Jolie thought they found an unlikely love when an unexpected one-night-stand presented itself during their graduate studies in NYC.
