Which is Sean Avery back in a Rangers sweater! Reported #16 will be called up this morning and with only a handful of teams below us in the standings (including both the Devils and Islanders) chances are strong he'll be suited up Thursday night. It'll be like the start of the season for me. Fact is if we're gonna lose I'd rather lose with Avery in the lineup, that's just how I feel. Now lets keep our fingers crossed he passes through waivers (sorry Dallas) and that Torts has the good sense to dress him. Can you imagine that incoming interview. Word of advice Aves, just bite your tongue you've got to put the classic in Winter!

Now if we can get the Hobbit back on Broadway were golden!
***

Peter Parker textbook mystery solved

Didn't need Encyclopedia Brown for this one. I just noticed this afternoon that you can spy the spine of the book Peter Parker is reading on the roof when Uncle Ben interrupts him in one of my photos. I put my brilliant deductive team, Jane and El Fano, on the case and they soon determined it's name, Splice Of Life! This does not seem to be a real textbook, so when it shows up on ebay next year, you know it's a real prop. I thought maybe Andrew Garfield was sketching out his Spidey suit atop the roof, like Tobey did before him, but either this is a brilliant bit of foreshadowing or our super smart student is researching his new changes.
Also I snapped a pic of a crew member sporting this shirt. I orginally thought it might have some other clue to the plot of The Amazing Spider-Man, but it appears to be a vintage cover. Can any comic book afficianados confirm?
***

Caught in the web

So now that the Rangers have gone on summer break (and the Caps too, so suddenly!) I've had a little time to devote to The Amazing Spider-Man, whose cast and crew have set up shop this past week in my backyard. Still with a big production like this you never know what situation you're walking into when you arrive at the reported location. Imagine my delight yesterday when I rounded a corner in search of the shoot to find one Peter Parker perched atop a Park Slope roof. Now it's no secret I have a bit more of a tendre for PP than Spidey himself (ever since raindrops kept falling on Tobey's head), so the bespectacled Andrew Garfield set my heart aflutter.

I think this must be the exterior of Uncle Ben and Aunt May's house because the first scene had PP addressing Martin Sheen down below. Reminds me of My So Called Life. If only AG was sporting Krakow hair! Mr. Garfield was a delight, as always. More than I can say for his handler, who neglected to pass along a small token despite a fervent promise to do so. Suck it, Lou Reed wannabe.

Still I'm jonzing for every bit of Spidey I can get, and it's well more than a year until this thing hits theatres.

xo Dollo

Note: If you borrow these images please credit me, Dollie Banner.

***

One game 5 was not like the others

I thought when Chicago pulled out a 5-0 win in game 5, then Tampa won their must-win decisively 8-2, that the Rangers were gonna follow suit and deliver a feel good win to all us fans who suffered through game 4. It didn't happen, and in fact my Blueshirts are the only team I was rooting for that didn't take game 5, the only win I really wanted.

Now that the season's over, failing in 5 makes some sense. The series definitely felt like the we were trying to beat the Caps, and the Caps are trying to win the Cup. I think that's the drive that powered Washington to take the two overtimes. I can digest that this team was not destined to go far in the playoffs, but what stings is that they were a better team than two years ago and their 4-1 result somehow negates all the heart and hard work they poured into this campaign. I especially feel for Henrik who again comes in second to a rookie goaltender. Neuvirth was definitely good, no mistake, but Henrik did a hell of a job, with nothing but a losing record to show for it. He deserves a fairer shake in the history books. We haven't been on the right side of the handshake line since 2008 (I'm looking at you Marty!) and I sure hope we'll be enjoying that distinct pleasure around this time next year. Maybe Chris Kreider will make all the difference :D
***

We prayed for this two weeks ago, right?

Ticketmaster sent me an email today requesting I review Game 4 for their site. Uh, what? Thinking about the responses they might get from the Garden faithful takes a little edge off the pain of Wednesday night. 48 hours later I can appreciate the excitement and intensity, all fun and good if it weren't for the heartbreak. It still hurts. Forget giving up a a 3 goal lead, I'd still rather be beat by some skill. To my mind it would have been better if Ovechkin had scored on his 1OT breakway, a much more dignified defeat than that nightmare of a misplay. Larry Brooks had it down this morning. There's plenty of other teams I'd have relished this scenario playing out against, but why my Rangers? Why does Ryan Miller have 2 shutouts and a 3-2 advantage when Henrik has been the best Ranger, all season, but most definitely this post-season. I still have faith in this team and especially in goal. Hopefully Henrik will tally his playoff shutout tomorrow afternoon. Plus, Boyle and Dubinsky's staches definitely deserve a few more viewings, I'm thinking Monday night. I think they dig Dubi's mustache, I know I do. It's only been 2 years, but I forgot how awesome playoff games are. I need some lasso lessons though because my towel arm is sorely out of practice. Luckily 4 goals (we sang for all of them, disallowed or not) got me up to snuff. As J remarked, it was nice to have so many banners waving (and not just me) during the national anthem. I'm looking to keep my skills honed tomorrow night. It's so hard to guess how each game will play out, but I'm hoping for the same effort with a little more finesse from NYR. As much as I miss The MZA, I'm thrilled to have #16 in the lineup, especially because I've been sporting his heritage jersey. May it always bring the Blueshirts good luck. Here's to Henrik and all the team, I love you and I believe in you.

Not I know in my last post I was hating on Washington D.C. a little, particularly the Post and it choices for this year's top Peeps dioramas. I apologize to Megan and Jesse who won a spot for their Black Swan entry. I took my desperation for peeps immortality out on them, when I know there are plenty of deserving peeps enthusiasts. I did want to give some particular love to one WaPo entry. This Is Spinal Peep is by far my favorite in this year's Peep Show. In the interest of full disclosure, I had nothing to do with this diorama, but I think Constantia Rioux, Sean Eustis and Kevin Hollenbeck did a terrific job. Not so much Friday night when I came home and Hockey Rodent had our berth% at 29.something. But I still had faith and was praying for a Caps matchup, generally a team I'd rather leave be. After a rousing visit to The Garden and a little help the unexpectedly eager Lightening, my prayers were answered. Apart from the outcome I was pretty satisfied with last night's playoff opener. Overall I want us to play well and we definitely did that, especially Henrik. My mom was not so happy, "Did you see them chop Henrik's hands? How can that happen?" I think the real problem with last night was that we scored first. I always have an illogical response to scoring first, thinking then that it's our game, we're obviously taking this one. Well it doesn't always play out that way. So let's go in tomorrow and clean up. I'm thinking Rangers' take it 5-1. I'd love nothing better than to head back to MSG Sunday having split and with all the momentum. That's my plan.

In a terrible twist of timing I was shafted by D.C. twice yesterday. First I wake up to find that my Black Swan peeps diorama has been passed over for another inferior take on the same theme. The rest of the Washington Post's Peep Show V is quite good (I like #22 the best!), but when you get to #19, just insert the picture to the left. I'm just a little bitter, but really every Black Peep entry I saw in the loser's gallery was better than the one they picked. And how many of them actually play Swan Lake? Add that to OT loss and NYC and DC are in a blood feud. Let's hope the Ranger's stick up for me tomorrow.

ps. I bought an Avery heritage jersey. Think he'll get to play? I'm thinking game 5!
***

It's never easy

The Rangers are making me crazy with their newfound will to lose. It's really meant to be viewed front-on, but I dig this reverse angles. It shows off the synchronicity of the bunnirinas. They have been delivering the goods down this stretch. And basically all season. Even losing, they rarely disappoint, that is what is so special about this campaign. Maybe it's because we been inside the playoff hunt most of the season, but it feels pretty fabulous to be chasing the teams ahead rather then fighting for eighth. There's still 6 to go, but I'm feeling pretty confident this squad can get it done. The whole team has worked hard, but I kneel at the feet of our King. Henrik has been spectacular down the stretch and I only hope those Vezina murmurs have rippled beyond NYC, because he definitely warrants consideration. One disappointment - memorable post-games. This team is great and good on the ice - off it, just plain boring. Avery's been neutered when they bother to speak to him at all. I love Boyle and Staal but their post-game chats are beyond stale. I only have Henrik's loving glances to look forward to. At least the Devils have shirtless locker room footage. Give me something to work with MSG! Still a minor complaint seeing as we're tied for 6th. Can you imagine a 7 game series like Saturday's game? Hard on the heart, but I'd be pretty happy with Boston. I'd take on Washington again too. Can't count on routing them like we did this season, but some retribution for 08-09 might be on the menu. If I could control fate, I would avoid anything in PA for two reasons. One, I'd hate losing to either team and two, I hate even looking at them. Oh wait I just thought of a third reason, the refs. Penguins - we'll get all the calls against real and imagined. Flyers - will poke and pull while the refs do their nails -or whatever their rationale is. So fingers crossed for 6th or 7th!

Well, while our heroes in blue have been putting together their run toward the cup two points at a time, I too have been working towards a crowning achievement. Henrik is spending all his resources being charming and criminally attractive. Did you see the all-star game? It took me nearly a week to get around to watching it, but after viewing the on-ice introductions it all became clear. Just look at his look! I know he was only on camera for about 15 seconds, but he managed about 7 devastating glances right into the camera. I know because I watched it frame by frame, and it was Hitchcockian wondering what was gonna happen next. "Oh no, he's blinking...will he look again?....Yes!" Perhaps a job in the Rangers' truck is in order because my slo-mo skills are excellent. Also, Henrik might want to try out for the next cycle of America's Next Top Model because his ability smize is second to none. Sorry Tyra!

I haven't taken so many pix of the TV since I was a teenager as this week also saw me capturing Eduardo's best moments in The Social Network. My man Andrew Garfield might have been passed over by the Academy but he is still much loved in this house. So much so that I actually bought two of Eduardo's outfits from the film. And don't think I'm not wearing his Caribbean hat Oscar night. Suck it King's Speech! I'm all about that Facebook movie, though I still love you Colin Firth.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 367px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_s9h1y-iJihs/TU2WhvdubSI/AAAAAAAAA-w/RN3bxIqiACU/s400/6a0120a59c9016970c0147e211d934970b-400wi.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570273820548164898" />
You know who else is supporting manlove this week? Sean Avery. I always knew we had a lot in common besides the fact that our thighs are the thickest part of our bods - we both love the gays. Avery is not only standing up for gay athletes, but also giving the whole community some candy with his participation in Marc Jacob's skin cancer prevention cause. I wonder if these developments have anything to do with his rare decision to drop the gloves against Devil Dave Clarkson? PS. Sorry about the Devil's feed on this clip. The only thing worse than seeing Avery drop to the ice is having to hear Chico offer his "commentary" about it. This is what happens when you deviate from a tried and true formula (i.e. pelt Brodeur and deny Clarkson) Henrik gets pulled and Sean goes down (and not in the good way). At least Vinny Prospal is red and ready. I'm hoping for some serious points in these next three road games. Did you hear the awful promo on Thursday? "The Rangers hope the Price is wrong Saturday afternoon." Sure, but jeez, we're the Rangers not the Isles. Let's up our game.
***

on the mend

So remiss of me! I have to get at least one post in this January, especially when so much has happened. Let's begin with the beginning, January 1st, Winter Classic, 8pm, NBC. Sometimes sports commentators (I'm looking at you, everyone) employ their objective stance a little too freely. What they might describe as a hard fought, incredible game/match to be lauded the world over, to me is entirely dependent on the outcome. Wimbledon final 2008? Not the best match of all time and you know why? Because my guy (That would be Federer) didn't hoist the trophy. Not so the 2011 Winter Classic. My complete enjoyment of the game is in direct relation to the Capitals pulling out the win. The whole spectacle was fantastic from the very beginning, especially when they announced Bare Naked Junkie Stephen Page would performing the anthem. Fortunately Bettman and the powers that be had the good sense to limit him to the Canadian anthem, which inexplicably must be sang at a Stateside event featuring two teams below the maple line. At least he knew all the words.

The game was well worth the 7 hour delay, and even more so was the finale of 24/7 airing the following Wednesday on HBO. Liev Schreiber is a narration genius. I thought nothing could match the emotional power in the final moments of Do You Believe in Miracles? but the last 5 minutes of episode 4 comes pretty close. After sitting on my couch leaking tears, I was comforted the next morning knowing I wasn't the only one. Mr. Wyshynski ultimately enjoyed the in-game coverage of Episode 3 over that of The Classic, but having watched the broadcast of the latter not the former, I was much more rivited by Episode 4. It was just incredible to watch the game, then rewatch it with complete access to every whine (not just Sid), every hit, every profane word. Brilliant. Now we need the DVD with lots of extras. I'm thinking raw footage of the two Ranger games. Plus I need more George McPhee. How hot is that guy?

My pallie Mike had the great fortune to not only be in attendance at Heinz field, but to be rooting for the right team which he has since commemorated with this killer ink. And you know there's matching tat on the other shoulder. Truly baadasssss. And a lot easier to look at than Matt Hendrick's eye!

Next up was the conclusion of the Bare Legal tournament in Buffalo. Everyone knows I hate losing to the Canadians, i.e. The 2010 Olympics, and this was no exception. Although ultimately I take consolation in the fact the it's much more fun to win the Bronze than lose the Gold. The USA medal game against Sweden was that much sweeter because my boy Chris Kreider took it upon himself to write the wrong of the semifinal game and scored twice to secure the Bronze. Still love these boys.

We Rangers have a lot of hot prospects waiting in the wings, but we also have some pretty great young players currently donning my favorite jersey. First and foremost is Mr. Zuccarello Aasen who was thankfully retrieved from the wilds of Connecticut. I knew he should have made the team from Game 1, and I've only been proved right since Sather finally agreed with me. The only downside to this little dynamo is the unfortunate truncating of his last name. I know the Garden faithful like to have a surplus of names to chant that sound conspicuously like boos, but I miss the Aasen like a mo-fo. Luckily my girl Jane has crafted the perfect solution. Meet The MZA, long lost member of the Wu-Tang Clan. All I'm saying is, NYR ain't nuthin' to fuck with!

Since then Sather and I have really been sharing one brain, or else that Jedi mind-meld I've been practicing is finally paying off because I've been hankering after Wojtek Wolski since Phoenix picked him up late last season. Well really before that, but who knew those fools on Colorado would move him. Who cares though because now he's a Ranger providing a point a game, and although I was sad to see the last of the Czech contingent leave with Roszival, I'm completely satisfied with this 2010-11 team. While the wins feel terrific, it feels almost as good to swallow the losses knowing that your team did their very best to secure those two points. I'm still anxious about the last third of this season, but regardless of the outcome I'm so proud of our boys and looking forward to playoff possibilities. In all likelihood we'll start on the road which given our away record I'm not only comfortable with, but actually prefer. Let's just lockdown one of those spots, preferably not against the Flyers!

Until then we have the All-star game to look forward to. Thanks to Shanny's delightful draft idea almost all my faves are playing for Team Staal. We've got our King and Marc, the very sharp Patrick Sharp, hottie hitter David Backes, who could ask for anything more? The only player I begrudge Team Lidstrom is Ducks' goalie Jonas Hiller, who looked like a crazy math teacher decked out in his blonde Jheri curl and doofy glasses. Aasen! I did learn something from last night's "fantasy" draft. Henrik Lundqvist is certifiably the most handsome man living. I've always thought so, but when surrounded by his fellow players, most of whom are tremendously attractive, his superior fineness is only heightened. Really it's a crime. Thank the great and powerful Oz that he plays for New York and that his baby blues are directed towards us, the adoring residents of his kingdom. I'd say we Ranger fans have a lot to celebrate. Although I'd like to beat the Flyers soundly next time we meet, everything else has been pretty golden. How great was that last win against Pittsburgh? what I really love about this team is that just when I think they're heading down one of their patented bad turns, they come right out of it. Like last night, when the Islanders were up 2-1 I thought for sure this game would get away from us and a three game slide would be cemented, but no we turned it around with a rout. Love it. And all this without Cally. Even when our 24 comes back I want to find a permanent spot for Zuccarello-Aasen. Love this guy. So good-natured when you know he wanted to tell Al Trautwig to Fuck Off for asking him if he himself thinks he looks like a hobbit!

Dubi's even been growing on me. I had kinda resigned myself to the idea of letting him go if contract negotiations get too tough this summer, but now I'm not so sure. Maybe it's the influence of HBO's 24/7 Caps-Penguins series. I loved how Dubi called Ovechkin "baby" twice, and that's only what they cut in. Gotta say I love the series despite the sneaky way it makes me care about the Pens. Even if only a little bit. Timing might definitely play a part, because the first episode premiered directly following that 4-1 win. Epsiode 2 was even better, with that behind the scenes sequence with the refs where they totally sided with the Rangers on the goalie contact call. Do you think that was just to shut us Ranger/Refs conspiracy theorists up? Who cares, although I do find it suspicious that everyone around Avery may be mikes in a specific scene you never hear one sound uttered from his mouth. Another Bettman directive? It would not surprise me if he had some say in what hits the airwaves, especially regarding public enemy no. 1. Unfortunately I don't think we play either team again during the series run. I just hope it ends with the Caps schooling the Pens on Heinz field this Saturday.
Also in fun hockey news, the barely legal tournament is back. Team USA won it's first round robin game in OT against the Fins. I read that 8 players are repeats from last year's gold medal roster, but I only recognized 4, Our own Chris Kreider and Ryan Bourque and goalie Jack Cambell (future Dallas Star, urrgh!) and hirsute Jerry D'Amigo (maple leaf, ick!). One of the new players I noticed was a Callahan, #24. Thought it must be Ryan's brother, but turns out it's Mitch from CA and future Red Wing. Still this kid has good taste in surnames and jersey numbers, so he's alright in my book. Of course last year's captain Derek Stepan is currently wearing a different red, white and blue jersey, but he's still lighting up the lamp. Best of luck to this newish team. I'd love nothing more for them to repeat the gold, this time on US ice.

Happy New Year everybody. Let's hope the 2nd half of this season is as solid as the first!
***

hibernating

I apologize for not posting in so long. It's not that I haven't been paying attention, it's more that I haven't had the wherewithal to write. They are plenty of things I've loved over the last month. Who couldn't love that first game against Pittsburgh? So seldom does it seem the hockey gods are smiling down upon the Blueshirts, but that night they not only grinned but pointed and laughed at the Penguins. Of course that same team has since gone on a tear and Crosby's been re-annointed as best thing to ever happen to the NHL. Whatever. I did notice something odd regarding number 87 recently. Did any of you think it queer that Sid used Dubi's nickname exclusively and repeatedly in his postgame remarks last week? Isn't that privilege reserved for teammates? or lovers? Well, as an American, Dubi has never played for Canada and he certainly has never been a Penguin. I'm just saying it struck me a being a bit too familiar.

Here's another question. Is the Devil's disastrous play so far another gift? As much as I'd like to see them scape the bottom of the standings, none of us want a repeat of the Flyers' resurgence from a few seasons ago. I'd like the Devils to play badly enough to shake out about 22nd in the league. As blasphemous as it sounds I reserve a bit more empathy for the Islanders, especially after we eked out 4 points from them this past week. I hardly want to be battling them for a playoff spot, but I thought for sure they be more of threat this season. Still you gotta love that they're only win in the last 18 was a shutout over the Devils. Another divine intervention?

In other favorable news, The team finally won a couple while I was in attendance. Yeah for raised sticks! Now if only I could get my section to stop pissing and moaning all game and actually enjoy success, everything would be brilliant. I did have a fun fan sitting behind me at the last game. He uttered a great out of context comment: (all breathy) "Mmmm, Gorgeous dump!" In a game filled with potential double entendres I never thought of that one. That was the Isles at the Garden, after which I met (and thanked) Puck Daddy himself, Greg Wyshinski. He was a delight and very handsome if I might say so.

Hope all y'all are enjoying the holiday season. Here's to a great December. I'm wishing my honey Andrew Garfield good luck with the critics in the ensuing award season. Oh yes, and I'm crazy about the Heritage jerseys. Question is who to get? Maybe Santa will decide for me!

Disclaimer: I'm all about man on man action, just maybe not Dubi and Crosby. Now, Talbot and Prust, more my style!
***

no need to punch ourselves in the face

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 252px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_s9h1y-iJihs/TNv-kRV7m4I/AAAAAAAAA8Q/Hsz2vNLmvlI/s400/8a9a8d709c7543bc6b89916c7423848e-getty-102908767nl001_washington_c.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538300065866292098" />Perhaps you can tell from the photo I chose, but I'm gonna focus on the positives of this game against the Caps and our current 1-3-0 slide. Why not? Apart from the scoreboard at the end this game had a bit of everything. Unexpected fights, ridiculous penalties, scoring. How can you not enjoy a game when Boogaard scored his first in well over four years? After a nearly end to end tally, I just wish he could have celebrated as well. MSG even kicked things off on an odd note when Steven Page, former Bare Naked Lady (now junkie) was pegged to sing our national anthem. I say our because Mr. Page is most definitely Canadian and proceeded to prove it by mangling the words to the Star Spangled Banner. He actually just skipped the "gallantly streaming" line which may be better because as we've discussed before some of the neanderthals in the garden think we say "screaming" even though the words are displayed on both sides of the ice. So yeah, Henrik gave up four goals and our scorers weren't exactly superstars (although I think Boyle will keep up his already record pace, no Voros repeats) still I think we played a good game. I see emotion, drive and a will to win nearly every game, and although the skills may not always result in 2 points in the standings, I'm comfortable with they way the losses have come about. It's early though, I'm sure I won't feel the same come March. Next up the Sabres, then Oilers. Can you believe the Edmonton game is scheduled for 12:30 Sunday? I know the Rangers aren't exactly great at early tilts but it will ultimately be a 9:30 game for the visiting team who happens to be worst in the league. If we can't pull that one out I may have to reassess a little earlier.

ps: Thanks to Dan Steinberg for linking to us this week. After all the Caps are my second team and it heals the whole left in my heart after his Washington Post left my beloved Peepitals in the trash bin. The Devils are bottom feeders, Tortorella's been sending out the same lines on a regular basis, and most extraordinary Scott Hartnell has cut his hair! Now I can hardly predict how this state of affairs will shake out come April, but I'm giving them my vote, even if the Flyers win the division. Do you think Laviolette will tape Hartnell's chopped locks to his monk spot? A little scrambly at times, but I haven't questioned the effort so far which is the best I can ask for. And I will throw Tortorella the credit. He may have received a little guidance from all the injuries, but he's been nurturing team chemistry so far and my impression last season it was that lack of instinctual playing the caused our inconsistency. Now if the boys can just win any of the games I personally attend we'll be golden. Next up is the Capitals on Tuesday. Still I'd give up that one for another sweep this weekend. Take down Samson and solidify the Devils record, that would be worst in the league!

Also, I hope Sunday or Tuesday game isn't sponsored by 1-800-LAWYERS!
***

copy and paste

I wish I could just post this same picture after every game and just adjust the sweater in front. Not a likely scenario, but I'm very proud of our boys in blue this week. I would love nothing more than another win tonight, but the pesky Devils may prove to be tougher than last night's 6-1 rout from the Sabres would suggest. For once I'd like to cash in on their locker room turmoil and give them a solid beatdown, but you know it won't play out like that. Kovalchuk and Mar-tan are both likely to play all 60 and every Ranger will have to contribute their best to get the win, but I know they can do it. Here's to sticks raised and the red and black bowed in shame!
***

onward and upward

I keep forgetting that we've played a lot less than some other teams. While .500 is not ideal, 5 games in I'll take it. I had the misfortune of attending Monday's tilt against Colorado, although it was still fun. I just hate that a loss no matter how poorly played ultimately lands on the shoulders of our King. In the end if I had to pick two points against the Avs or Leaves, I'd take spilling blood on the blue and white every time. Hopefully we can just repeat the win a few more times this week. I've been lovin' the play of Artem Anisomov lately. He's scored a couple of goals and was seen mixing it up a bit at MSG. I think it must be his new English skills, " You are SUCK. You play female-like!" I'd like to see any interviews with him. Q: What do you think of the team? A: "Well I used to like Avery but now I know what he speaks, I think not so much!"

Here's to four more points this weekend.
***

Can the third line just play every shift?

I have to admit that although I have a lot more faith in this team after preseason I didn't have high expectations for this particular game because traditionally we haven't fared so well in Buffalo (a certain Game 5 comes to mind). But thankfully I was proved wrong to the tune of 6-3. I knew this kid Stepan was a treasure last January when he Captained the gold medal Juniors' team, but I had no notion of his contributing this early (1st game!) and this often (hat trick!).
Is 21 his official number now because I need to order that jersey pronto? This 21 already has half the goal count of his predecessor Chris Higgins. UPGRADE! Stepan was not only the number one star of our game but of the whole NHL! Even so the rest of the team played really well too, so yay Rangers. Let's just work on Henrik's GAA.

Also I cannot get enough of Avery's glasses, nothing new, but these new specs he's been sporting since training camp are spectacular (haha). Watching the pregame last night I discovered what is so perfect about these frames are that the tops are traditional hornrims, but the bottoms are clear. Plus I love the slightly lilac tint to the lenses. They suit Mr. Avery better than the traditional nerd fames, although my man Justin Timberlake has been rocking that look to great effect throughout this lengthy promotional tour for The Social Network. Just got my tix for the season and maybe I'm looking through the rose-colored glasses that come free with 3 pre-season wins, but I've got hopes for 2010-11. First off I don't know why I was hankering after all the World Junior players when we already have Derek Stepan. I love this kid. Plus he's been playing terrific. As has Sean Avery. Thank you #16, because I was tied up thinking there wouldn't be a spot for my favorite horn-rimmed blueshirt. The only drawback to this training camp has been the unfortunate demotion of the Hobbit, Mats Zuccarello-Aasen. Turns out he jinxed himself by dropping the awesome from his name. Even so I was all ready to buy my #36 Frodo jersey, but I don't own any Wolfpack jerseys and I'm not about to start now. Maybe he'll be called up and he had better be sporting a hyphen when he does. Now it's just a matter of finalizing that fourth line, then the cup is ours! C'mon, you gotta want it to win it.

With one day to go I have to say September has been very good to me and I can only hope October will be as memorable. Sure the US Open could have gone a bit better, but I had a very fun and fulfilling trip home, plus I had the great pleasure of meeting actor Andrew Garfield, star of this week's The Social Network (he's the one in argyle!). I feel a little in love with him in the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus because he was so sweet, funny and heartsick, and he's even better in person: enthusiastic, generous and a complete delight. Go see his movies. Plus he's gonna be the new Peter Parker. Watch out Avery, there's a new bespecticalled man on the loose.
***

it's cooling down (or is it wishful thinking?)

Hockey season must be getting close because Rangers have started suiting up. At least he's a right wing, because the glut of left wings just got deeper with the addition of Kennedy. I hope Avery doesn't jerk himself out of a spot on the lineup. I don't have heavy expectations for this season, so I need all the entertainment I can squeeze out of that locker room. And I have a feeling Frolov isn't a jokester. A bit more surreal and cerebral than the IT Crowd it also features two spectacular male leads, Howard Moon and Vince Noir. I cannot even describe them so just watch this clip. They can be seen sporadically on Adult Swim, but just buy the box set.

That should get you through to training camp at least!
***

what's going on?

What are the chances the NHL will nullify Wade Redden's contract? Not that I wasn't trying to find a spot for Avery on my lineup sheet as well, but I'd rather just ignore that possibility as long as possible. All in all I think the Rangers have had a fair free agency. I love Biron, ok with Frolov, preferred Shelley, but will give Boogey a chance. I'm pleased we didn't go all in for Kovalchuk. I kinda figured the arbitration would be more tasty, but Lamoriello V. Bettman is kinda a lose-lose for me. Personally I'd like to see Kovy land in LA. What kinda of demented nightmare was this? Although Crosby looks more like a creepy delivery boy in this pic. Hey Rogers Cup, next time get some Shanny up in there, or anyone but Sid. Federer is currently in Toronto for the main warmup to the US Open. I've been mentally spending a lot of time there because due to the tournament and a screening of Scott Pilgrim V. The World I had the great fortune to see this week. It's excellent and can't be missed. No hockey action for a film set in Canada, still I cannot recommend it enough. Eagle-eyed Sloan fans may recognize a certain bass guitar in battle 3, not too surprising given that Chris Murphy taught the cast how to rock, or at least fake it.

Here's to Roger and his run for a 17th slam at Flushing Meadows. Here's to Scott Pilgrim, may you reign at number 1. Here's to a great training camp (Please sign Marc Staal!). Here's to a great rest of the summer. Blackhawks pulled it out, no not that way, but the 16 wins needed to lift the Stanley Cup. Congratulations Chicago. I for one am so glad they did, although I had my doubts when Hartnell tied it up off of Hossa's skate, would the curse continue? I wanted the Flyers to lose so badly except for my beloved Blair Betts and who does NBC randomly pick to show all dejected and deflated? My sorely missed Betts. This is the one time I'd like to look at Peter Laviolette - when he's all resentful and unfulfilled. You know who I cannot look at enough? That right, Patrick Sharp! Playoff beard, clean shaven, this guy is eye candy. Why couldn't he be trade bait? I love Byfuglien but I'd much rather have Sharpy in my conference.

Which brings me to the 2010 draft. Everybody knows since the Barely Legal competition in January I've been pulling for the Rangers to draft any of the USA team that's available. Slotted at 10 I thought we were a lock for clutch goalie Jack Campbell, but my heart was kinda set on defensive dynamo Cam Fowler. Projected to go 3rd-5th I thought we may even trade up for him. Then by some miracle (or perhaps the Ducks handed out some "koolaid") he falls past the 9th pick. But does Sather and the Rangers' organization pick him up? Maybe we don't want to draft anymore defensemen. Ok, but then why did we pick one anyway?! Now, Dylan McIlrath seems like a delight. He's nicknamed "The Undertaker" which you gotta love and he's projected to be a stay at home bruiser in the mold of Jeff Beukeboom. Now if McIlrath becomes the next Beukeboom, I'll be ecstatic, but right now I envy Dallas and the Ducks for scoring my two guys at 11 and 12. It just hurts.
In good news we did officially sign the Hobbit. Our new Norwegian will be arriving for training camp in early September. I for one am pumped. I hope some little kids sport his jersey because I'd like to see Zuccarello-Aasen emblazoned on their little backs! I kinda want a Norge jersey myself, except I might look more like a fridge than a cute hockey fan. Now I just hope Sather will resign all my boys who bleed blue, starting with the best Staal, my boy Marc, hopefully Ozone Ken (aka Prospal) and most definitely Jody Shelley. Just give them what they want, Glen. Don't dick around with us or the team. Here's to a great free agency. What a bunch of suck. In fact these whole playoffs have been miserable. One of the only upsides of missing the postseason this year was the feeling I had that I could just sit back and enjoy the games with nothing invested. But that was a crock. I had plenty invested. First off was $20 for a playoff pool of which I'm currently in last place. Next I was nearly certain it was the Capitals year. Not so much. I was also rooting for Boston, but thank God only marginally. Can you imagine being a Bruins fan this season? I'd much rather go out with a whimper during the regular season than hand away a 3 game, 3 goal lead. What a heartbreaker! And what to I get from rooting for Montreal 2 rounds in a row? Nada. Although I did get to hear the name Hamrlik every other day and it always made me giggle. As much as I love Blair Betts I just cannot champion the orange and black.

I fared a little better in the west, after all I like Chicago and now I want them to hoist the cup. I was hoping the Cinderella story would belong to Phoenix, but they had the misfortune of drawing Detroit in the first round. Otherwise it was fairly painless. Even Joe Thorton didn't disgust me the way he normally does. Hopefully the finals will go my way and maybe somethign fun will happen, like Hartnell's hair getting stuck in Toews' sideburns! Only potential problem - the Hossa curse! He's been on the wrong handshake line two years running. Not my favorite guy but please do not let it be the third year!

The World Championships weren't much better, except for the Gold medal game. I though USA had it in the bag once they invited Ranger prospect wunderkind Chris Kreider, after all he's 2-2 in championships this season, but instead USA struggled to even be included in next year's tournament. The only good news in this is that Dubinsky played great in the later stages. Hopefully he steps up like that for us next year or it raises his market value. Either way I'm happy. To be honest I only half followed the World's but I was excited that Russia was so dominent until the Czechs made the final. Love the underdog, especially when that team is headed up by Jaromir Jagr and his beautiful baby face. Congratulations #68! I miss you and love ya. Also Roszy continued his solid play for the CR. I'm pretty sure he'll be in Blue, Red and White next year, so I'm happy to see him pick up his game and sustain it through another tournament. Hopefully he'll bring that confidence back to the Garden next year.

Luckily I have the French Open to distract me. Roger Federer rolled through his first round this morning. I most want his semi-final streak to continue but I'd be ecstatic if Rog defended his title. Go Roger!
***

Then we'll kick it!

We signed Norway dynamo Mats Zuccarello Aasen this weekend. I'm super thrilled. I think I neglected to mention him during my coverage of the Olympics, but every time I watched Norway he was making plays. The announcers, probably Doc, kept saying his name but I heard it as Tootirello Awesome. It wasn't until about the 3rd game when I saw the back of his jersey that I realized that I had it all wrong. A very Khabibulin moment for me like when I thought his Nickolai's name was Habi Bulin. It's not entirely my fault because for some unknown reason announcers always say, "Danius Zubrus" in its entirety every time although to my knowledge there's not a single other Zubrus in the league.

It's funny that Mr. Awesome (that's what I'll call him) shares a number with Danny Briere because he's short like that. Like remarkably short. Now I was happy to unload diminutive Gomez, but he didn't have a spectacular name. I've been waiting many seasons to zero in on the right player jersey for me, but I may have finally found it. Hopefully the stitching is in font size 2 like the one Mr. Awesome sported during the Olympic fortnight. Definitely a better option than having your name curl all down your back. Look his feet don't remotely touch the floor. It's like me at the park! I need to hug this guy like an emergency. Forget the playoffs, now I'm excited for the new season.

I have been enjoying the playoffs though, Particularly the Caps finally showing the Canadiens what they're made of. Now if the Coyotes can keep up their exceptional play against the Wings my pool picks will be looking pretty strong. Loved Prucha's goal the other day. Let's hope he has plenty more in him.
***

What strange forces are at work?

Weird things are happening in my brain. The other day I hooted with glee when Jarkko Ruutu scored. You heard me right, that Ruutu. The only explanation I can give is that it was against Marc-Andre Fleury, but really is there any exceptable reason to root for Chris Neil? No, but my mind isn't listening to reason right now.

This problem is at its most disconcerting during Devils' games. It dates back to before the playoffs. Sometime over the two-week Olympic break I developed a type of love for Zach Parise. It's very troubling. I used to give the teeth to his finely formed rough trade face, but now I give fist pumps when he pots a goal. It's just plain wrong, but again it is against the Flyers. I I did remember to grimace at Brodeur last night. Maybe the Devils can win the rest of the games 6-5, that way Marty can suck it all night long and Parise can still score the game-winner. Keep this gal from losing all her Ranger credibility.

For the record I'm rooting for a Caps/Yotes final. Backstrom for Conn Smythe. Hear that Caps, better not let Gomez get any more by you!
***
