Reconstruction Update

The reconstruction of Green Machine / Blue Space began on Friday, November 4th. The majority of the structure will be reassembled by the end of the weekend. Energy systems will be reinstalled over the next month.

Congressional Subcommittee Presentation

Three of our team members (Heather Korb, Gregory Sachs, David Schieren) will meet with a Congressional subcommittee on Wednesday, November 2, 2005. They will present an overview that focuses on hydrogen as a alternate fuel source and describes the merits of green design.

Our New Home

We are proud to announce that Green Machine / Blue Space will be reconstructed at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) site at Kings Point, NY. Reassembly is scheduled to begin on Friday, November 4th.

The NYIT Solar Decathlon team greatly appreciates the support provided by the USMMA and eagerly looks forward to our continued collaboration.

Public viewing of the 2005 Solar Decathlon homes will continue today and tomorrow from 9am to 6pm. Deconstruction and shipment of each team's home will run from Monday, October 17th to Wednesday, October 19th.

Final Results

The competition is officially over and the team from Colorado has won the 2005 Solar Decathlon. Cornell took second place and Cal Poly was third. NYIT was fifth overall.

Special thanks to Cal Poly for acknowledging our hydrogen energy system during their acceptance speech.

Frequently asked questions

Here are the questions and answers to the most frequently asked questions by the visitors to Green Machine / Blue Space:

1) How much does this home cost? The construction of our home was partly funded by our university and by sponsor donations with each investing about 50% of the costs. The total dollar value for the parts of the home is $500,000. Of course, this does not include the cost of labor.

2) What is happening to the home after the competition? We are still investigating this. Green Machine / Blue Space may be brought back to our Old Westbury campus and used to instruct students about renewable energy.

3) What is so special about NYIT's energy system? Unlike the other schools in this competition that are storing their energy with batteries, we are storing our energy in the form of hydrogen. Our energy system allows us to use solar power to split water, capture and store hydrogen, and then later use that hydrogen to produce electricity via our hydrogen fuel cell.

Today is the final day of the Solar Decathlon competition. At 2pm all results will be final. Currently NYIT is in 4th place, 55 points behind Cal Poly for third place and two points head of Virginia Tech.

For now the rain has stopped and it is partly cloudly outside. It should be an interesting finish.

Yesterday, NYIT took 4th place in the Communications contest.

Today, our fuel cell is back up and operational. We've successfully competed in the hot water contest and our electric car is currently out gaining points for the "Getting Around" contest.

Rain and more rain

Good morning. Another rainy day on the Mall, but the Decathlon moves on.

Yesterday, NYIT placed third in both the Architecture and Dwelling competitions and was third in the overall standings by the end of the day.

Today the results for the Communications contest will be announced at 10am.

The remainder of the week and the majority of the remaining points will be decided by the performance of our energy system.
