Daedalus X-304 BattleCruiser – Part 2

Here is my work on the model for today. It took a few hours to stick all those stupid planes on there, and I am only 1/4 done with them.

Didn’t get super far on the render like yesterday, but I did add a bunch more detail. I am thinking of releasing the .blend file for everyone to play with, but I am still undecided.

Here is a little preview of what I have been working on for the past two days. Its still a work in progress, but it is beginning to take shape.

I have a long way to go on the render, and I will keep you updated as I go.

P.S. If you happen to be a Stargate fan, and can get your hands on blueprints or really high quality shots of the Daedalus X-304, please let me know.

Fast F12 v1.3 Beta Released

Finally FastF12 idle rending is here. This release is a bit buggy so I am going to release it under Beta. I will probably release a bugfix later or just include it in v1.4, which will be the last release on version 1. After that I plan to be working on getting the distributed rendering part of the program working. Here is a list of the features in this version:

Idle rendering options to allow rendering only while you are away from your computer(Set the number of minutes idle it should wait until it starts rendering),
Set process priority for blender.exe(Idle, Normal, and Realtime)
Code cleanup for added stability, function, and readability(For me)
Add comments for extra readability(For me)
Improve error handling(The program is less prone to crash now)

I am thinking of changing the layout of the program, and making it horizontal instead of vertical. Let me know if you have and input on this.

I have fixed the bug that would close all instances of Blender. You can now safely use Blender while using this program.

Fast F12 v1.2 Released

It took me a while to figure out how to do the pause and progress bars, but after about a week of on and off work I got it all worked out.

You can now pause and cancel your render queue
“In Progress” and “Completed” are displayed on the queue list, instead of annoying popups
Two progress bars(one for current job and the other for the complete queue) , so you can see how far along everything is.
Percentages and frame information to go along with the progress bars

Like always I have included the most recent screenshot of the program. The program keeps on getting longer and longer, and I hope I don’t run out of screen length on people’s computers by time I finish the program. If you have small screen resolution, and you are having trouble using the program just let me know, and I will make some adjustments.

Please note that the current version of FastF12 will close any running copies of blender if you hit pause, cancel, or close the program. I am working on a fix for that.

How to Kill a Process in C#

While developing FastF12 I wanted to develop a feature that would allow the user to cancel and pause the render. It took me a while to find out how to kill a process in C#, so I though I would do a simple tutorial on it. The simple code is below:

string processName = "Process Name";
Process[] processes = Process.GetProcessesByName(processName);
foreach (Process process in processes) {
     process.Kill();
}

You replace Process Name with the process name you want to kill, and the program will kill any process with that name. For example, for my program I set processName = "blender", and it killed any instance blender.exe .

string processName = "blender";
Process[] processes = Process.GetProcessesByName(processName);
foreach (Process process in processes) {
     process.Kill();
}

If you are not exactly sure what the name of the process you are trying to kill just check Processes in the Windows Task Manager(ATL+CTRL+DEL).

Fast F12 v1.1 Released

I have been working on this for a few days, but Version 1.1 is finally here. The improvements include:

Increased Stability and Error Handling(The Remove Job Feature Actually Works Now)
Render your jobs with multiple Blender installation versions
Move jobs up and down the queue order
Textboxes for selected render option will only be enabled. This is to prevent user error.
Disabled render button while a render is in progress. This will keep you from hitting it twice.

The current screenshot of the program is on the right. You can see the new arrows to move the jobs up and down in the queue order, and the textboxes for the animation option are deselected.

Many people have been asking about porting the program to Mac and Linux, after all Blender is a cross platform program. Depending on if I can find a few people that have skills in these areas, and would be will to help, I will be porting the final version(s) of FastF12 when it becomes a fully fledged distributed rendering program(look at the development schedule for v1).
