The first change to our Library charges since 2015, these increases reflect the rise in costs  of making resources available in our libraries.

The Document Delivery charge will be $18 per item (+ GST). Urgent document delivery (within 2 hours) will increase to $25 per item (+ GST).

Document delivery requests include such items as, but not limited to:

  • unreported judgments and tribunal decisions
  • reported judgments
  • journal articles
  • excerpts from texts
  • excerpts from statutes and regulations
  • Gazette notices
  • forms/precedents

Gown hire, available from Wellington and Auckland libraries will now be $15 a day.

Entry is by card access only for the Auckland and Canterbury libraries. If you do not have an access card and wish to apply for one, please contact your local library.

Lawyers rooms/libraries which are situated in courthouses are accessible during the opening hours of the court.

]]> New Zealand Law Society Library reopens https://www.lawsociety.org.nz/law-library/news-archive/new-zealand-law-society-library-reopens Tue, 26 May 2020 12:06:13 +1200 Under Alert Level 2, the New Zealand Law Society libraries have re-opened. The Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury libraries are open to members from 9.00am - 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. There will be no after-hours access to the libraries until further notice.

Entry is by card access only. This will provide the librarian with an accurate record of who has used the library in case contact tracing is required. If you do not have an access card and wish to apply for one, please contact your local library.

Lawyers rooms/libraries which are situated in courthouses are accessible during the opening hours of the court. Hamilton branch library (which is in the branch office building) can be accessed with a door code from 7am-5.30pm. Please fill in the Contact Tracing Sheet. Contact the branch 07 838 0264 if you require the code.

Hand sanitiser and wipes are supplied and lawyers are responsible for wiping down the keyboards and monitors.

Access to some parts of the library is restricted because they are still under repair. In addition, because of hazards and lack of lighting, there will be no after-hours access for the immediate future. The doors will be unlocked 8:30am to 5pm Monday to Friday for the time-being. Research computers will be available and the closed reserve books will be available as soon as shelving can be sorted.

All other books and law report series are in storage at the moment, and will not come back until the repairs are finished.

]]> Wellington High Court situation updated https://www.lawsociety.org.nz/news-and-communications/latest-news/news/wellington-high-court-situation-updated Wed, 30 Nov 2016 12:07:04 +1300 The Ministry of Justice says the Wellington High Court building has now been assessed by structural engineers as being structurally sound.

In an update on the Court following the earthquake on 14 November 2016, the ministry says the interior experienced significant water and other damage and it is developing a work plan to address this.

"Once the plan is finalised, we will be able to advise when the building will reopen, which is likely to be in early 2017."

High Court services will continue to be provided. In the interim, the Wellington High Court registry will continue to be based on the sixth floor of the Wellington District Court (43-49 Ballance St).

Lawyers or members of the public wanting to file documents can do so there. All other contact details for the High Court (phone and email) remain the same.

High Court matters will be rescheduled to other courtrooms in Wellington. Daily lists of fixtures and their locations continue to be published on the Courts of New Zealand website.

The High Court has also advised that they can provide access to the lockers in the Law Society Library in the High Court Building on Friday 2 December 2016 at 8:00am should people need to retrieve items they have left there.

]]> Wellington High Court Library closed temporarily https://www.lawsociety.org.nz/law-library/news-archive/wellington-high-court-library-closed-temporarily Wed, 23 Nov 2016 12:37:41 +1300 Due to the earthquake last week, the Wellington Library is closed until further notice. Inspection of the floors and foundations is required, which has meant that all the books have needed to be moved to storage in Porirua. Unfortunately the earthquake activated the sprinkler system in the library and some of the books are damaged. Library staff will be checking and sorting through these books for drying, repair or disposal.

Next week Wellington library staff will relocate temporarily to the National Office building in Waring Taylor St, and will be available to handle research requests at the end of the week.

]]> Case law spanning four centuries urgently removed from quake affected Law Society Library https://www.lawsociety.org.nz/news-and-communications/latest-news/news/case-law-spanning-four-centuries-urgently-removed-from-quake-affected-law-society-library Tue, 22 Nov 2016 16:11:22 +1300 The New Zealand Law Society’s large collection of bound case law, statutes and other related law books has had to be relocated from the building situated at the High Court premises in Wellington.

When the 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck on 14 November, it set the fire water sprinklers off - damaging many of the law books.

Others were thrown onto the floor by the force of the earthquake causing spine damage and many were then soaked in water.

They’ve since been moved onto 20 pallets and transported to a storage facility in Porirua.

The Law Society’s national law library came into existence on 31 January 2009 with the transfer of the library holdings of the Auckland, Canterbury, Otago and Wellington District Law Societies to the New Zealand Law Society.

The service includes other library collections from Otago, Whangarei, Rotorua and Tauranga as well as the three research libraries in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Librarian Robin Anderson says along with the damage to some of the books, staff have moved out of the building so engineers can investigate the integrity of the floors and ceilings at the library.

“So they’ve had to lift all of the carpet and that meant removing all of the books from where they were shelved,” he says.

The books range over four centuries.

“There’s very few from the late 18th century except the New Zealand Statutes at Large. The older books that we have from the 16th 17th and early 18th century are in the Alexander Turnbull Library and are OK,” he says.

Mr Anderson says the good news is the fire sprinklers didn’t go off throughout the entire building so many of the law books are not damaged.

“The books we can’t fix will be the subject of insurance claims. It’s possible they may be replaceable so we’ll be thoroughly looking into that,” he says.

Some of the case law information will likely be found on the internet, or by purchasing copies of scanned books, and some of the material may have been reprinted.

The librarian staff will continue to go through the pallets over the next 10 days and when not at the document storage facility, they’ll be situated at the Law Society’s national office in Waring Taylor Street.

The old High Court makes a temporary comeback

Meanwhile, with the High Court in Wellington out of action because of the earthquake, the old High Court building, as a part of the Supreme Court complex, has been assessed by engineers as structurally sound and is having a comeback as a temporary courtroom.

The Ministry of Justice says some members of Judicial Office supporting the Chief Justice have their offices in the building. The courtroom had been used in the past by the High Court for admission ceremonies and some civil fixtures, and has the necessary facilities for proceedings to be recorded.

The ministry says while the Wellington High Court building is closed until further notice as structural engineers undertake further assessments, High Court services are continuing to be delivered.

The High Court registry and the probate team are working from the sixth floor of the Wellington District Court building. Members of the public and lawyers who want to file documents, or want to make face-to-face inquiries, can do so from there.  There are separate counters for High Court matters and all other contact details for the Wellington High Court remain the same.  

The ministry says different courtrooms throughout Wellington will be used for different fixtures.  

“As you can see from today's daily list, criminal matters, are being held at the Wellington District Court, which has modern facilities for defendants remanded in or held in custody, while the old High Court and Court of Appeal are being used for civil matters. The cells in the old High Court are historic and it does not have modern custodial facilities,” the ministry says.

The High Court is due to complete its last sitting for the year on 16 December.
