LexisNexis' third series of online legal research webinars especially designed for NZLS members, will focus on the Linxplus and CaseBase databases.

Linxplus is a joint venture between LexisNexis and the New Zealand Law Society.
It is a New Zealand online caselaw research tool of over 100,000 case summaries of judgments, with over 70,000 associated PDF's. Coverage of the courts ranges from the Supreme Court to the Weathertight Homes Tribunal. All higher court judgments are added to Linxplus, while only important lower court material is selected for addition. Linxplus also indexes journal articles from all major New Zealand law journals and reviews, as well as journals from other Commonwealth jurisdictions (over 100,000 records).

CaseBase is an Australian case citator and annotator of cases from over 60 Australian and overseas report series and of unreported decisions of the High Court, the Federal Court and the Supreme Courts of all Australian states and territories and other selected jurisdictions. Along with the details of the case, Casebase also provides a guide to how the case has been subsequently considered. CaseBase is also an excellent bibliographic reference, with catchworded and annotated article entries covering over 100 Australian and overseas legal journals.

Webinar dates to choose from are:
28th May at 11am
30th May at 1pm
31st May at 3pm

Take part in this training from the convenience of your own desk. All you need is access to the Internet, and a telephone. Instructions on what to expect will be sent when you register.

How to join

Since 1893, New Zealand's Official Yearbooks have captured the stories of New Zealand in words and in numbers. The Yearbooks are an incredibly rich one-stop-shop for data and information from across government. Information is included on diverse topics from fisheries to friendly societies and prices to poetry.

Each yearbook can be searched individually using ctrl/f for PCs and laptops and search within page for smart phones and tablets. Tables can be copied and pasted into other programmes, including Word and Excel.

2010 will be available shortly, with the same searchability as earlier years. Tables in the 2010 yearbook can pasted into Word, but not Excel.

The second edition of the highly successful New Zealand Law Style Guide will be published in December. The first edition, published in 2009, has quickly become the standard for the citation of New Zealand legal material.

The second edition aims to build on the success of the first edition by:
• Providing new or expanded rules for a range of material not included in the first edition;
• Clarifying rules, including the cross referencing rules; and
• Simplifying the rules relating to the citation of international material.
Some sections have been rewritten and reordered to make them easier to understand. As a result the Guide is much more user-friendly and the new edition is essential for anyone who has to cite legal materials. It is intended that there will be no further editions until 2017 at the earliest.

The new edition of the Guide will be able to be accessed online through the website of the New Zealand Law Foundation, by the end of January 2012. The New Zealand Law Foundation supported the production of the first edition and owns the copyright to the Guide.
Hard copies can be purchased from Thomson Reuters at $19 + GST ($21.85 incl GST) from mid -December.

The necessary repair work will start sometime in the New Year with no further timeframe available at this stage.

Library staff have had controlled access to retrieve items from the collection since the February earthquake, however this access may become more restricted as remedial work is carried out. Meanwhile Library staff will continue to provide all Library services from a temporary site at 8 Homersham Place, Burnside.

This is one of the more academic databases we provide; although with more than 450 full text journals it is certainly good value. Economical and economics. A search for example on government regulation produced over 1,000 academic articles, 11 magazine articles, 1300 news items and even three radio/podcast items that you could listen to. A look at what’s new shows articles on gas transport, Russian gas exports, the country image discourse model (Rugby World Cup 2011 anyone?), green marketing, energy distribution and economic growth, and gentrification. If any of these interest you, then I have a database for you!

Epic databases – Legaltrac

One of the Epic databases available to you in the libraries and though your my.lawsociety pages is Legaltrac.

This database indexes a large number of legal journals from around the world and includes some New Zealand journals. It indexes law reviews, bar association journals and legal newspapers. Some of these are available in full text as well or even as spoken files that you can either download or listen to. The indexing starts in 1980 and has more than 1.6 million items indexed!

On the database front page you will see a simple search box with buttons underneath that allow you to limit the words you enter to subject headings only, keywords or the entire document (the default option). There are also three tick boxes that give you some preset limits. Underneath those the database highlights new articles on selected topics for your interest.

Searching. Use the box on the front page for most searching. I would recommend limiting searches to keywords first off to see how many results you get. Results come back to you with the most recent first. They are organised by article type – academic, magazines, books, news and multimedia. It is always worth looking at all categories. The orange bar at the top of the page also gives you other search options including browsing by subject, browsing by publication and advanced search which gives you many possible search options to try.

Results. Ticking the box to the right of the item saves it to a result list. After you have looked at all the results and selected ones you are interested in, you can go to this list by clicking “marked items” in the orange bar at the top of the page. You then tick which ones you want to keep and those results can be printed, downloaded or emailed to you.

Go to http://www.lawsocietylibrary.org.nz/catalogue/ to look at it. This catalogue is much more comprehensive that the previous LINX catalogue.

The catalogue contains not only records of all the texts in the Auckland, Canterbury and Wellington libraries, but also all of the journals and law report series. We are adding more to it too as we check to make sure that all of the older materials in the libraries, including encyclopedias and 19th century books are added. The books from Otago and Whangarei libraries are also being added to the catalogue. Finally we have catalogued all the electronic resources we have in the main and branch libraries.

If you are looking for recent issues of a journal or law report, you can use the catalogue to check and see which library has received which issue and when. You should bookmark the catalogue so that you can check to see if we have what you are interested in before you leave your office or email us.

Situated in Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, and Christchurch the libraries also offer a nationwide delivery service. Wellington based law librarian Robin Anderson says their collection goes wider than just legal information and includes extensive resources through the EPIC collection of databases. This includes reference resources in the Gale database in areas including business economics and theory, general business and access to the respected LegalTrac database of 1400 legal publications. Another of the EPIC databases is Academic OneFile which provides extensive coverage of the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology and literature with millions of articles available in both PDF and HTML full-text with no restrictions. It is updated daily and even includes full-text coverage of the New York Times back to 1995.

The Appendices to the Journals of the House of Representatives (AtoJs or AJHRs) are a collection of government related reports including reports documenting the work of government departments and public organisations as well as reports of select committees and commissions of inquiry. The AtoJs have been published every year since 1858, and are important official records of New Zealand’s social, economic and political history. The National Library of New Zealand is managing a collaborative programme to digitise the AtoJs and make them easy to access and freely available online.

With the recent digitisation of more volumes, the coverage of the AtoJs online now extends from 1861 to 1906. The recently added volumes contain reports on coal mining, Parihaka, the Tarawera eruption, the Sweating Commission and the Boer War, to name just a few. A great deal of information about the people of that time is included in lists of civil servants, sheep owners, land purchasers, Māori landowners, petitioners, etc, as the activities of government intersected with people’s everyday lives.

The complete digitisation of the AtoJs is a long-term project, requiring contributions from many stakeholders.

The New Zealand Legislation website is undergoing redevelopment. The Parliamentary Counsel Office has made a preview version of the website public to show what’s changing, and to gather responses from users.

The preview website provides legislation through a new interface that will evolve as development work progresses, to introduce more new and simplified features. Work is expected to take around 12–18 months to complete. The PCO's goal is to provide a website that makes legislation even more accessible

This staged approach makes it possible to test and implement developments without affecting the stability and reliability of the New Zealand Legislation website. That site will continue to operate unchanged. And it allows the pubic to try the preview site’s new features and to tell the PCO what they think.

Warning:the preview website is work in progress. While it is intended to provide the same up-to-date legislation as the New Zealand Legislation website, you should not rely on it. Instead, refer to the New Zealand Legislation website

It covers all health issues including illnesses, chronic illnesses, healthcare reforms, fitness, professional standards and evaluation. It is important to note that these are covered from the health professional and academic perspective rather than a consumer perspective. It is nonetheless a very useful source of information for any work you have which touches on these areas.

In addition the Gale databases at my.lawsociety.org.nz also have two more databases that cover parts of this area – Nursing and Allied Health Collection and a more public oriented Health and Wellness Resource Center & Alternative Health Module.

This database that you can access from my.lawsociety is one that will help you broaden and deepen your knowledge of the arts. While it does not have a New Zealand focus, it has nearly 6 million references to film, music, theatre and more. If you have clients working in the fine arts and music areas then even a simple search on the word contract will pull up useful news and information. Some titles are available in full text – including Publishers Weekly. Useful for getting the overseas view on a topic.

The NZLS Library in Christchurch remains closed after the 22 February earthquake. No access is possible to the Courts building in which the Library is located. The building is currently cordoned within the 'red zone'. The Courts building and NZLS Library collection have suffered damage and no information is yet available on how long it will be before the location will be operational, however this is expected to take some time.

NZLS staff based in Christchurch will relocate to a new building in the north west part of the city, in early April. Staff are working remotely in the meantime. Several computers will be made available in the new location for practitioners to access the NZLS collection of electronic legal resources.

Once working from the new location, Library staff will be relying on the NZLS electronic collection, and where possible inter-loaning texts from other libraries or purchasing newly published editions of key texts until it is possible to return to the Library in the Courts building.

Some Christchurch matters have been transferred to Courts in Ashburton and Timaru. The NZLS electronic collection is available from computers in Solicitors’ rooms at both these locations.

Canterbury Library staff can be contracted by email at canterbury@nzlslibrary.org.nz. Phone enquiries can be made to the Wellington (04) 473 6202 or Auckland libraries (09) 304 1020.

A group of academics, editors and publishers led by Geoff McLay and Justice Chambers have developed a uniform New Zealand legal style guide. The New Zealand Law Style Guide seeks to remedy inconsistent use of styles and provide a unified framework that the courts, law schools, legal practitioners and legal publishers can follow. The guide will be available free on the Law Foundation website in late December 2009 at www.lawfoundation.org.nz but is available to buy in hard copy from Thomson Reuters.
