MR Lakie, Did you know any of our family. My parents, Neil Burrei and Angela Burrei or my brother Mike Burrei. At that time my parents lives on Southwest Highway near Cicero Ave.. They had minor damage. We lived on Edison Ave prior to that. My Dad and brother knew a number of policemen and Police Chief Hein John (Jack?) McCastland who had just retired from the Fire Department. I was at college when this happened. My aunt called me to say my parents were OK. I didn’t even know what she was talking about till she called. My sister, Kathi lived west of Oak lawn, and she could see it from her house. She saw all the wires flashing when they were hit. Are there any people that I might know on this thread that went to Oakland high school and graduated in 1963?

I know your house! My friend, Mary Ryan and her family bought it around 1970! Had lots of fun there, and in the pool!

When I got older (I was 5 when it hit), every time I went to the roller rink, I'd see the plaque remembering those who died that day. Such a terrible day.

I had just turned 5 the month before. Dad was working the night shift at Ford (79th and Western?) so he wasn't home. Mom just got us three kids set up in the dining room for dinner and turned on the living room TV set for the 5 o'clock news. We were watching the Channel 5 news when Floyd Kalber announced, "a tornado was spotted near here earlier". My mom looked out the front window (we lived at 9221 55th Avenue - right by SW Highway). She said, "Oh sh.." then told us to race to the basement. We though she was joking as we had just sat down for dinner. She was trying to grab my baby 1 year old sister out of her high chair -fighting to get the tray off, and corral my 2.5 year old brother and I down the basement stairs. She then ran back up to open the NE windows to stabilize the pressure then ran back down the steps. We tried to follow her back up but she yelled us back down. She came tearing down the stairs and grabbed all three of us in a tight hug at the bottom of the stairs. We saw the terror in my mom's eyes and we were scared too. All of a sudden we heard the oooo-ooooo sound and dun-dun-dun-dun sound as it passed by. There was a lot of loud noises outside, things flying around and hitting things. I'd say it lasted less than 30 seconds. Then it got really quiet and cold afterwards. When we went back upstairs and looked outside, there was debris all over everyone's front lawns and all the power went out on our side of the street. Mom could only find some Halloween candles for light! Still remember the witch candle! We spent the night with the family across the street because they had power and it was too cold at our house without it. The Sudings had 4 kids, so it was a fun sleep over with older kids! St. Gerald's school was barely a block away. Its entire back was completely torn off, OLCHS was a couple of blocks away and it had extensive damage. After OLCHS and St. Gerald's, the tornado continued east along SW Highway, doing extensive damage and took out the roller rink on Cicero. The next day, my dad drove around taking stills and movies of the damage he saw. Some homes only had a front stairs and slab foundation left. The Barn restaurant was totaled with buses tossed into it. So glad we had no damage to our house, no windows blown out. Thanks, Mom. Still remember it vividly. Still scary.
