Fulfillment and Harvest 

Acts 10:23-48 

Children often insist, “I can do it myself!” as they wobble on their new bike or reach for shoelaces they haven’t quite learned to tie. Teenagers can also strive for independence, convinced they can navigate life themselves. Even adults pride themselves on self-sufficiency, learning new skills from videos, solving problems alone, and pushing through challenges without asking for help. 

But deep down, we know the truth: we can’t live this life alone. 

Thankfully, God never asked us to. The celebration of Pentecost reminds us that the Christian life is not driven by our effort but by His Spirit. We need His presence to guide us, shape us, and empower us in ways we never could on our own.

Promises in the Famine

Joel 2:28-32 

Awaiting someone’s promised arrival can be thrilling. Children write letters to Santa weeks in advance, bursting with excitement at the thought of his Christmas visit. Families crowd around the airport, scanning every traveler for the familiar face they’ve been longing to see. Parents in the delivery room hold their breath, waiting for that first cry confirming the arrival of their newborn baby. 

But what if the waiting wasn’t minutes, hours, or weeks. What if it stretched into centuries? 

From early in the Old Testament until the day of Pentecost, God’s people lived with a promise: that His Spirit would one day dwell among them. Prophets proclaimed this coming blessing, but generations passed without seeing its fulfillment. Still, Israel waited – longing, hoping, and trusting. 

Join us this Sunday as we celebrate Pentecost, the day Joel prophesied about, and the day God’s long-awaited promise came to life among His people. We’ll explore miraculous truths about the Holy Spirit including His work then, His work now, and His work in the future.

Acts 9:36-42 

Our world celebrates the loud. We chase after famous people on bright stages, quote authors and podcasters we’ve never met, and take on the agendas that shout the loudest. Yet something in us still longs for the quiet – the soft wind, the lapping waves, the songs of birds at dawn. 

Jesus celebrates that quiet place. He lifts up the humble and the lowly. He honors the unseen, the overlooked, and the ordinary. He Himself entered the world not with applause, but as a baby in a manger. 

This Mother’s Day, join us as we explore how Jesus views humble, natural servanthood within His supernatural kingdom and discover what a life of gospel faithfulness truly looks like. 

John 1:43-51 

We don’t always grasp how good something is until we experience it ourselves. A famous landmark, a five-star restaurant, even a New York Times bestseller may be highly recommended, but you only know it’s worth it once you’ve seen it for yourself. 

In the same way, Jesus invites His followers with a simple call: “Follow me.” Naturally, those who accepted Him couldn’t keep it to themselves, so they passed the invitation along with three life-changing words: “Come and see.”

The Seed and the Storm

Mark 4:35-41 

There’s a reason we’re drawn to action movies, thrilling fiction, and dramatic rescue stories: everyone loves a big, cinematic save. But what about the rescues that feel quiet? What about when the miracle looks less like a calmed storm and more like a verse on a page? 

In Scripture, Jesus rescued His people in powerful, unforgettable ways. It’s easy to look at our own lives and wonder, “Why isn’t He fixing my problems like that?” But Jesus hasn’t left us empty-handed. He’s given us something living, active, and deeply powerful – His Word. 

Join us this Sunday as we explore how Jesus uses both mighty miracles and His living Word to reach the hearts of His children, then and now. 

The Unconcealable Kingdom 

Mark 4:21-25 

We’ve all heard the phrase “let’s address the elephant in the room.” It describes that moment when something feels too important to ignore, or so obvious that there might as well be a full-sized elephant standing between you and the other person. 

In a way, Jesus’ ministry began in the opposite manner. It arrived quietly. He was born in a manger, in a small town, and grew up like every other child. And yet, unlike any other human life, Jesus was bringing forth the Kingdom of God into the world. He knew that even though His mission began quietly, it would eventually become impossible to overlook – an “elephant in the room” of sorts. 

Join us this Sunday as we discover how the light of Jesus’ Kingdom refuses to stay in the shadows and how we’re invited to live in it. 

The Seed of the Kingdom

Mark 4:26-34

We’ve all been there. The teacher assigns a group project, and you’re paired with two people who likely won’t do a thing. You spend all week working, and by the time presentation day arrives, your only goal is to make sure the teacher knows exactly who did all the work.

From Lego towers in the living room, to reference pages in academic writing, we are wired from a young age to claim credit for our accomplishments. We want the acknowledgment we feel we’ve earned.

But the Kingdom of God operates differently.

Scripture reminds us that we are simply vessels in the greater plan of the kingdom, not the source. God tells his children that all credit should be given to him, because any growth we see is a product of his plan being carried out.

The Parable of the Sower

Mark 4:1-20

We’ve all heard that gentle but pointed question, “Are you listening to me?” Not because we’re hard of hearing, but because our attention has drifted. Parents asking a child to repeat back their words aren’t just checking for repetition, they’re checking for presence, engagement, and for a heart that’s tuned in. This is a familiar concept because we know the difference between hearing sounds and actually taking them in. 

Jesus understood that difference to an even greater degree. People heard him but often did not receive him. His words were misunderstood, misconstrued and reinterpreted by some of his audience. Conversely, his parables stood as an invitation for those who were ready to listen, not simply hear. 

Join us this Sunday as we dive into this parable with open hearts, ready to listen for the summons of the King. 

Mark 3:20-35 

When the Kingdom Becomes God’s Family 

Family is often the first way we understand who we are. We introduce ourselves through the people we’re connected to, and we give our time and affection to those who share our blood. In Jesus’ day, this was even more intense. Your family line was your identity, your security, and your place in the world. 

But when Jesus announces His kingdom, He reshapes even this. He shows that God’s family is not defined by ancestry, last names, or bloodlines, but by a deeper allegiance: doing the will of the Father. In a culture where family defined everything, Jesus invites His followers into a new family tree. 

Join us this Sunday as we explore how Jesus redefines family and what it means to belong to God’s household today. 

Crowds Versus Followers 

Mark 3:7-19 

We’re often swept into whatever the majority is doing – the music everyone listens to, the clothes everyone wears, even the phrases we use just to blend in. Crowds feel safe and familiar. They offer belonging without requiring anything of us. But does simply blending in ever lead us into the sweetness of the life we’re called to live? 

Jesus was constantly surrounded by crowds who wanted something from Him. And though the disciples followed Him too, there was a stark contrast in their approach. 

Join us this Sunday as we explore the difference between joining the crowd and becoming a faithful follower. 

New Wine Into Old Wineskins 

Mark 3:1-6 

No one likes change. Whether it’s a new manager, a new president or a new housing development moving in right across the street, we all know the complaints that come with unfamiliarity. Moving away feels uncomfortable, switching jobs feels unsteady and inviting new people in can feel nerve wracking. But why do we fear change when it’s guaranteed to happen? 

When Jesus brought forth the new kingdom, people were confronted with uncomfortable change. Some responded with flexibility, humility and resilience, while others reacted with resistance and hostility. 

Join us this Sunday as we explore how Jesus came to pour out His new wine, and what it means for us to become new wineskins, ready for his renewal.

The King is Here

Mark 2:23-28

Rules can often leave a bitter taste. They can feel confining, stifling creativity and limiting freedom. Authority figures can silence people rather than guide them. Parents can fail to explain the heart behind their rules. Teachers can unintentionally shut down the inspiration of their students. For many, rules bring more frustration than order. 

But what if there was a perfect rule-maker? An Authority whose commands aren’t meant to restrict, but to help His people thrive. A Father whose rules protect His children. A Teacher whose instructions lead to joy and new life. Living in a world full of broken rules and leaders, causes us to seek the voice of a gentle Shepherd. 

Join us this Sunday to discover how the commands of the King Jesus are for the flourishing of His subjects. 

The Sanitized vs the Scandalous Church 

Mark 2:13-17

Have you ever voiced an unpopular opinion? One that makes people look up from their plates at a dinner party or causes passionate debate amongst friends? These opinions can often be polarizing, occasionally causing people to choose sides, leaving little room for neutrality. 

Similarly, Jesus had an approach to ministry that sparked strong reactions. It was unpopular to many religious leaders of the day and didn't fit neatly into their expectations. Some called it a scandal, but Jesus called it the gospel. 

Join us this Sunday to discover how Jesus' relational ministry invites us into a life of radical hospitality and healing. 

Mark 2:1-12

Most of us spend a good portion of our lives learning how to respond to authority. We learn it early, through the parent that tells us when to cross the street, the teacher who decides when recess ends, and the boss who sets the deadlines. Some of these voices are trustworthy while others leave us questioning. But when we encounter the voice and power of Jesus, we experience a different kind of authority at work—one that didn’t make empty promises or use His position for personal gain. This kind of authority chose service over status, lifting others up rather than prioritizing Himself.

Mark 1:35-45

Most of us have a junk drawer where all kinds of household items get tossed: pens, chargers, receipts and keys, all piled together until it’s hard to tell what’s important. Our lives can often feel the same way. Tasks stack up, responsibilities blur, and the things that matter most get buried under everything else.

Thankfully, we’re not left to sort through the mess on our own. We have a God who knows exactly what belongs where, a master organizer who can reorder our priorities the moment our hearts are open to His work.

Picture a typical day in your life: your morning routine, your commute to work, your wind-down time at night. Over the years, these rhythms settle in and become second nature to you. You perfect your breakfast recipe, learn the quickest route across town, and end each evening preparing for the next day. Eventually, the familiar becomes most comfortable. 

But what if that comfort was never meant to be the end goal? What if our routines were meant to be interrupted? What if we were made for more?

Psalm 67

When you think of missions, what comes to mind? Traveling overseas to serve the poor? Building homes and raising support? Bold evangelism in the streets? For many, the idea of reaching the nations feels overwhelming, whether it’s too costly, too time-consuming, or beyond our comfort zones. It’s easy to assume that “this calling must be for someone else.” 

However, God reminds us that His plan for the nations involves something simple yet powerful: our generosity. 

Join us as we read Psalm 67 and discover how our surrender can bring blessing, joy and salvation to the nations. 

Revelation 5:9

In Japan, a sign of respect is to finish all the food on your plate, avoiding “mottainai”, or wastefulness. In China, leaving a small amount of food on your plate is polite, communicating that the host has provided more than enough.

In Germany, punctuality is highly valued and arriving exactly on time can even be seen as late. In Spain however, arriving late is often the norm, as it shows that the guest is relaxed and not rushing the host.

These are only a few of the numerous examples of diverse ways of life we see exemplified across our world. What can unite nations that are so different from one another? Could it be that we all have a need for food? That we all crave sleep? Perhaps that we all have the desire to be loved?

The answers to these may all be yes, but none of them are fully complete. Join us this Sunday as we discover what truly unites the nations together.

A woman sits with a knitting pattern, carefully planning each stitch of her creation. She chooses the yarn, the needles and the design, already envisioning the finished work before the first knot is even made.

Similarly, God knew you before you even knew yourself. Though many spend their lives searching for their identity, Scripture reminds us that God has already carefully knitted us together (Psalm 139:13).

Join us this Sunday as we explore the nature of what God has intricately woven into our true identity.

But even the sun pales in comparison to the Great Light that has come to overcome the darkness. The fulfilled prophecy in Matthew 4:16a says, "The people who live in darkness have seen a great light." This light is the Messiah, bringing the good news to his beloved people.

Gifts arrive in many shapes and sizes. They are often wrapped in paper and ribbons as signs of preparation for the grand reveal.

For many of us, Christmas preparation involves decorating the tree, hanging up the stockings, and stringing the lights. Meals with family are enjoyed while carols play, and excitement builds for this long-awaited day. While these traditions are joyful and festive, true Christmas preparation started long before us, carrying eternal significance. It began with God’s great plan for the salvation of the world through the Messiah. And just like scripture resounds with songs of anticipation for the coming King, our preparations ought to echo this reverent tune.

There are so many things we long to be certain about:

Will we retire securely?

Will our parenting be fruitful?

However, life is not about collecting the right information and controlling every aspect of our story. It is about forming a relationship with the One who already knows every detail, down to the number of hairs on our heads.

These definitions portray the excitement, joy and emotion that love can bring to life. But something is missing in these descriptions. If love is simply a feeling or preference, what happens when they dissolve? What if there is more to the story of love?

Imagine standing in a crowded marketplace. Everywhere you turn, voices are shouting for your attention - “Buy this! Try that! You need this to be happy!” Bright colors, tempting smells, and shiny objects pull at your senses.

But in the middle of the chaos, you notice someone you love deeply—someone whose presence brings peace. Their voice is quieter than the others, but it cuts through the noise. You realize you don’t need to chase after every distraction because you belong to them.

That’s what John is showing us: in a world full of competing loves, the one love that matters most helps us put everything else in its rightful place.

1 John 1:5-2:2

A common misfortune that can happen amongst toddler girls is when they pull up their shorts under a dress and sometimes the back of the dress ends up getting tucked into the shorts. It’s hilarious and endearing and they have no idea when it happens. They walk around with an abundance of confidence, clueless of what’s going on in the back. Meanwhile, everyone around them sees the truth. It would take some honest self-inspection for those girls to see how they actually are and not just what they think they are.Jesus calls us to a similar self-inspection to see if we are truly walking in righteousness, or if we just think that we are. Claiming to be righteous isn’t enough; our lives must match our speech. So, how can we figure out if our walk matches our talk? Tomorrow morning we will see what Scripture teaches us about it.

Can You Know God? (Part 1)

1 John 1:1-4

If you have flown on a commercial flight, then you’ve sat through the well-known “pre-flight safety briefing.” The flight attendants crowd into the narrow aisle and demonstrate how to operate all the safety equipment and exits. Now imagine that instead of the safety equipment demonstration, they spend the whole time talking about how to order the food, choose a movie to watch, and what’s going on in all the cities you’ll be flying over. Would that information make you feel safe and secure if an emergency were to happen?

Certain situations demand a certain level of assurance. The more important something is, the more you want assurance about it, right? God knows this and He has met that need abundantly through His Word. Tomorrow morning, we will begin a new series in 1 John, “Can We Know God? Assurance About What Matters Most.”

Come, ready to listen in. Everything else John tells us in the letter hinges on the things he tells us at the outset.

John 8:2-11

A small little boy waited until his mother left the kitchen when he snuck in and stood before the plate of fresh-baked cookies. Her earlier admonishment echoed in his head, “No cookies before dinner.” But as he gazed at the cookies and smelled their sweet scent, her voice grew faint and he reached out and grabbed a cookie. One wasn’t enough however, and soon he found that he had eaten all but one cookie. He panicked and heard his mother walking back to the kitchen. Before he could hide the evidence, she walked in.

For most of us, our mind fills in the rest of the story with the little boy receiving some sort of consequence because of his disobedience. But how would we feel if his mother hugged him and told him not to do it again? Tomorrow morning we will hear how Jesus handles a delicate situation with mercy and justice.

Hebrews 11:6

Philanthropy in the US began in the colonial period with the Puritans. They believed in not just supporting the poor and needy but strove beyond that to help the colonies as a whole. Men such as Cotton Mather, Benjamin Franklin, and Paul Revere exemplified this model and had tremendous impact on the development of the country. When these men gave aid and helped ensure the hungry were fed, children were looked after, and education was accessible, no one turned away their gifts.

According to Psalm 119:68, God is the greatest Benefactor, for all He does is good. Again, in Romans 8:28 it says that He causes everything to work for good for those who love Him. How often do you find yourself asking for and accepting His goodness? Do you feel too undeserving to accept His gifts? We wrap up our series Ruth: Meditations on God’s Kindness tomorrow morning with one final look at God’s hesed towards His children.

Ruth 4:1-12

When Michigan Central Station opened in 1914, it quickly became very popular, peaking at 4,000 passengers a day by 1944. After its closure in 1988, it lay abandoned for 30 years and fell victim to vandalism and neglect. Ford Motor Company later stepped in and bought the property in 2018. After renovating for 6 years, the station was re-opened on June 6, 2024, and it did not disappoint. The grandeur and beauty inside and out made visitors gasp and marvel.

In our own lives we can see tragedy and suffering and wonder if it will remain this way forever. We know God is good, but in the moment, despair wins over hope. But God, being rich in mercy and lavish in love, pulls us out time and again and restores us to a place of beauty that makes us gasp and marvel. Come and hear more tomorrow morning about how God fights for His children.

Ruth 3:1-18

The Airforce has an official elite flying team known as the Thunderbirds, representing the best of the best of our country’s pilots. Operating the F-16 Falcon, Thunderbirds show off their unmatched skill in dangerous exercises. The commander of the team takes the position as lead and the other pilots mark their positions based off the commander’s location. They are traveling so close to each other that they cannot take their eyes off their commander. This is why they have adopted the phrase, “Blind trust!” to represent their team; they have no choice but hold their position and trust that the commander is leading them correctly.God calls us to trust where He is leading us, and He has given us abundant evidence that we can fully trust His plan. He has proven that He will lead us to still waters and care for His sheep. Tomorrow morning, we will see this demonstrated in the lives of Naomi and Ruth.

Ruth 2:17-23

Certain retailers have a policy for when large merchandise is purchased, and it can’t fit into a bag. For example, you want to buy a vacuum: you take it to the register in its large box and pay for it. To prevent the customers from getting harassed at the door, cashiers will place a sticker on the item purchased that says, “Paid in Full.” With that sticker in place, customers can walk out with the confidence that they own the item free and clear.God is a Redeemer by nature, and when He paid for your sins through the death of Jesus, you received a sticker that read, “Paid in Full.” Your debt has been erased, and you belong to the Father. Tomorrow in our series in Ruth, we will hear about the beautiful redemption coming to Ruth and Naomi.

Ruth 2:1-17

Sitting on a farm in Northern California is one of the world’s largest corn mazes. Boasting 42 acres of corn, visitors flock to the farm year after year to have a go at the challenging maze. Upon entering the maze, the path feels sporadic and random at best; guests don’t have the proper perspective to see that an intricate design has been carved into the field. While some maze-goers can feel lost and unsure at times, the farmers know exactly where they are and where they need to go to work through the picture.

Life can feel similar to walking through a corn maze. What we see as dead-ends and endless circles are actually purposeful steps God has ordained to lead us exactly where we need to be. Maybe we expect to go right but end up needing to go left or must double back to move forward. God has the sovereign top-down view to see it all, and our job is to trust and obey as we walk through it. Tomorrow morning come and see just how God works this out for Naomi and Ruth.

Ruth 1:8-22

There is a common expression that asks the question, “Is the glass half empty or half full?” Someone who says the glass is half-empty is said to have a negative outlook. They only see what’s missing or lacking, they have a generally pessimistic perspective. The other side is someone who looks at that same glass and declares that it is “half-full”. This view indicates someone who sees the potential, or what is already in possession. They are generally optimistic and hopeful, able to encourage and boost the morale of others.As believers we are equipped with God’s own Spirit that enables us to perpetually see the glass as half-full. There is always hope, always a reason for joy and peace beyond understanding. But what about when life circumstances leave us feeling empty? When it seems there isn’t any hope to be found? What do we do and where do we go? Tomorrow morning, come find out what truth God has for you and how you can find true hope when all else seems empty.

Ruth 1:1-7

As one of our primary senses, hearing comes from a complex system that turns sound waves into something meaningful in our brain. Starting with the outer ear, sound waves are collected and funneled towards the eardrum in the middle ear. From there, tiny bones called ossicles transmit and amplify the vibrations into the inner ear. Inside the inner ear, the cochlea is filled with fluid and lined with special hair cells which convert the vibrations into electrical signals that the brain receives and interprets. Amazing!

Hearing plays such a significant role in our body that it’s no wonder Scripture uses the word “hear” almost 800 times. When God calls us to hear, however, it is more than a command to use our ear drums; it is a call to respond to His revealed truth and kindness. We will hear tomorrow morning of a woman who did this very thing when she heard what God had done for His people as we begin our new series Ruth: Meditations on God’s Kindness.

Daniel 9:15-23

A recent survey of 2,000 Americans sought to learn about their criteria for asking for help when starting something new. The results showed that 73% don’t ask for help until they feel it is absolutely necessary, and 13% admitted that they never ask for help. Of that same group, 53% said they feel held back from reaching certain goals in their lives because they try to go it alone. For whatever reason, it seems most Americans would rather not ask for help.

It begs the question: is this how we approach asking God for help? Would we just rather not? Or do we swing the other way and come at Him with a list of demands? When it comes to praying, many are confused on what to even say. Thankfully, God Himself has given many examples for us in Scriptures. Tomorrow morning, we will conclude our series on prayer and discover what it looks like to come to God in the right way.

Daniel 9:1-14

Cause and effect: the principle of causation; the direct relationship between an action or event and its consequence or result (Merriam Webster).When we put water into a freezer, we are not surprised when it comes back out as a solid block of ice. When we then put the block of ice out in the summer sun, we are not surprised when it returns to its liquid state. We call these events cause and effect, and they make sense.What about when God commands His people to do something and says there will be severe consequences when they disobey? Does that throw us into an uproar of anger and confusion? Or are we able to say, “Yes Lord, you are right. You said this would happen.”? Tomorrow morning, we will look further into how we respond to God through prayer.

Daniel 9:1-11

There was a woman who needed help on her health journey. She had tried to do all the “right” things but was frustrated in her lack of progress. Seeing ads for a well-known weight loss app, she decided to give it a try. After downloading the app, she worked her way through all the questions; she finally finished and was ready to see their predicted date when she would reach her ideal weight: “You will reach your goal in two days.” Excitement was quickly replaced with confusion. How was that possible…?What she failed to realize was that she hadn’t entered her data accurately. She didn’t acknowledge the reality of her situation and thought she was better off than she was. Because of that, she couldn’t get the help she needed.When we go to God in prayer, are we coming in confident of our good efforts and ready to meet our goals? Or are we humbly admitting that we fall short every time and need the Holy Spirit to help us? We will begin a new series on prayer tomorrow morning where we’ll learn how important it is to have a reality check first.

Colossians 2:11-15; 1 Peter 3:18-22

One of the oldest, most-exclusive groups in existence are the Freemasons. Their fraternity dates back to the Middle Ages and originally included stone cutters. To become a freemason member, there are extensive requirements and rules that must be followed. One such rule is that it is not allowed for current members to discuss any lodge happenings with outsiders. The rites and rituals all take place within the confines of their local lodge, hidden from the public eye.In stark contrast, Christianity is open to all people, and the only requirement to join is a repentant heart that believes in the life-saving work of Jesus.

There are two physical symbols of the Christian faith: baptism and the Lord’s supper. Neither one is the work that brings about salvation; they are not rituals that are required before being admitted into the “club.” So why do we follow the Lord in believer’s baptism? Come tomorrow morning to hear how Scripture explains this beautiful symbol of our Savior.

Most of us really enjoy a good comeback story. Especially when it comes to sports. When your team is down all season and all hope is lost, but then suddenly they pull out a win right when it counts and take the championship title, it fills you with immense joy and excitement. You’ll walk around proudly wearing your team jersey as you identify with their victory and claim it as your own.Jesus overcame the greatest enemy in the world and procured the highest victory for anyone who believes in Him.

For all who possess saving faith in Christ, His victory is now their victory, His joy is their joy. So, what is the symbol of this victory? What can we proudly display to everyone around us to say that we belong to the Champion? Come tomorrow morning to find out what this all-important divine element is all about.

Studies all throughout history have unanimously reportedthat every human has a mother. In fact, those same studies all say that if you do not have a mother, you are in fact, not here. Due to this overwhelming evidence, it is a safe conclusion to say that everyone is impacted by mothers.

All joking aside, celebrating Mother’s Day is a joy and blessing not to be taken lightly. Our sweet Lord was born of a woman, and He honored her up until the moment of His death. Tomorrow is not only for moms, however, as the Word of the Lord is able to teach and admonish us all. Make sure you join us tomorrow in honor of the moms in your life, but to also worship the living God and hear His truth for you.

Meals can be some of the most memorable events in our lives, especially when they are centered around important events. For God’s people of Israel, there was one meal in particular that was celebrated every year with the purpose of looking back and remembering. The Passover was the greatest act of deliverance in the Old Testament, and the annual feast of remembrance afterward was a monumental celebration where the whole country packed into Jerusalem to partake in it together.

Jesus participated in this meal with His disciples just before He was arrested, and what took place during that feast forever changed God’s people.

Luke 19:1-10

A study performed in 2021 by the Pew Research Center revealed that 41% of Americans have experienced some form of harassment online, with 75% of those saying the abuse took place on social media. It’s clear that communication between humans has been impacted significantly by the internet, and not always in the best way. Online interactions don’t allow human connection because the person at the other end of the sentence is just a screen. When humanity is reduced to an object, then anything goes.

During His earthly ministry, Jesus looked into eyes, touched with His hand, held with His arms, and spoke with His voice. Today He speaks into our hearts through His word, and now we are His hands and feet that deliver His message to others. The Word of Life breaks barriers and defenses and invites outsiders to come in and sit at His table.

It can be a very intimidating experience walking into a new place for the first time, whether it’s a church, classroom, work, gym, party, etc. The anticipation creates a highly anxious state of mind because one of the top questions on our mind is, “What will they think of me?” We feel like the outsider, as though everyone else is in on some secret that we don’t know. But suddenly someone offers a big smile and waves you over to sit next to them, and your whole mood changes. Suddenly you feel a sense of belonging.

Jesus knows that all of us are outsiders; we all have a deep longing to feel welcomed and loved, to be brought in and feel secure in our place. But – the danger of belonging is that we can stop remembering when we were outsiders.

Luke 15:1-10

A 3-year-old little girl lost her beloved Muddles one day. She was in tears, heartbroken when it was time for her nap and her sweet stuffed kitten Muddles wasn’t there to comfort her. Assured by her mother that they would find Muddles, the toddler eventually fell asleep while the mother frantically tore through every inch of the house looking for the priceless toy. Hours turned to days and Muddles still wasn’t found. A week later, the little girl prayed for Jesus to help her find her lost kitten, and when she woke up from her nap, she opened a box in her closet and saw Muddles looking up at her.

If Muddles were a person, how loved she would have felt knowing that the little girl and her mother were stopping at nothing to find her. Day after day, they didn’t give up. We are that little lost toy, and Jesus is relentless in His pursuit to find us and bring us home.

Luke 14:15-24

If you have ever thrown an event that requires a guest list and invitations, there are two lists running in your mind: the guests you want to come, and the guests who you hope can’t make it. The former are the ones that you are close with, or you know will be the life of the party; the latter are maybe the ones who make you feel awkward or are hard to talk to. But—what if everyone on the first list said no? What if they said they were too busy for you and your celebration?

God enrobed Himself in humanity and became God with Us, to deliver His people and invite them into His kingdom. But when He arrived, they rejected both His invitation and His kingdom. Thankfully the story didn’t stop there; the King extended the invitation to all who would believe. In this message, we'll learn as we continue in our series and hear what the Lord has for us.

Luke 14:7-14

Ancient Rome utilized the dining table as a means for gaining social, political, and economic advantages. The host of an opulent dinner party would be an elite Roman citizen, and their goal was to showcase their wealth and sophistication by bringing out the best in class from food to entertainment. Their guest list was a who’s who of influential society, and the seating arrangement around the central table was no mere coincidence. Places of prominence were reserved for those guests who offered some kind of gain for the host, be it political or financial.

When Jesus attended dinner parties of the prominent Pharisees, He was surely rubbing shoulders with people of means and power. He frequently called out their motives and lack of humility because their dinner parties were no different than their Roman counterparts. Jesus has a much different guest list in mind for us, however, and in this message, we will walk through His instructions for us.

Stubbornness is a character quality that can be a strength or weakness, but in most situations it’s a stumbling block. Frederick Nietzsche said, “Many are stubborn in pursuit of the path they have chosen, few in pursuit of the goal.” In other words, the way something is done is more important than the final outcome. Once someone sets their mind on what they perceive is the right way to do something, it is difficult to convince them otherwise.The Pharisees found themselves clashing with the path that Jesus laid before them. They had convinced themselves that what they were doing was right, so anything different than their way had to be wrong, even if God Himself said it. It’s shocking to think they were bold enough to oppose God to His face, and it should cause us to pause and check our own hearts. In this message, we'll learn about a time when Jesus encountered this kind of stubbornness, and how we can equip our own hearts to prevent repeating that same mistake.

Luke 12:35-48

Here is, perhaps, an all-too familiar scene: you have left your teenaged children at home while you and your spouse attend an event together. You wrote down specific instructions on chores they were expected to do while you’re out, and that when the chores are finished, they can play. But what actually happens? They immediately play and forget all about the chores until they receive your text at the end of the night: “Coming home.” Now they’re in a panicked state as they hurry around to get the house in order before the door opens.

Jesus has left us with similar instructions; He’s told us what to do, and when He returns, He wants to see that we haven’t procrastinated or forgotten! Tomorrow morning let’s come together and hear the Word of our Lord on how we can get ready for His return.

Luke 10:5-7

When you look up the word peace, the first definition given is: “freedom from disturbance; tranquility.” This can be applied in a lot of ways, but one area it relates to is the people around us. Our American culture can be pretty hostile when it comes to certain controversial topics; a common mindset is, “If you’re not with me, you’re against me.” That kind of thinking creates such a disturbance in our mental and emotional state, the very opposite of peace!

With ever-increasing defensive postures and hostile comments, there is a great temptation to want to stick within a certain bubble and keep out the negativity. But Jesus sent out His disciples anyway, and He wants to send us out too. In this message, we will hear some very encouraging news from the Lord about when we are out in the world and who we might encounter.

Watching a cat’s absurd overreaction to normal objects is a pastime many people enjoy on social media. For whatever reason, the smallest movement of a stick or paper can send the cat flying an impressive distance at unfathomable heights. As soon as they land and look back at what made them jump, you can almost see their expression thinking, “Oh. I might’ve overreacted.”

How many times does this happen when we’re startled by something the Holy Spirit wants us to do? We jump in fear, we fumble around with excuses, we might even try running away. But when it’s over we can look back and say, “Oh. I might’ve overreacted.” Jesus isn’t out to scare us or sabotage us with impossible tasks and heavy burdens. Just the opposite! His yolk is easy, and His burden is light. When He calls us to do something, He is working in and with us. In this message, we'll see just how tender He is when He has big plans for us.

Luke 5:36-50

Financial debt is something most Americans are well-acquainted with. Forbes conducted a survey and found that 77% of Americans currently have some level of debt, with 72% reporting they were likely to continue accumulating more. Debt brings a host of problems with it, the most being the emotional strain it puts on us and our relationships: 86% of those surveyed reported that their debt was hurting their closest relationships in some way. Imagine the relief these people would feel if they received a notice in the mail tomorrow stating that their debt was 100% erased?

This is exactly the relief that Jesus offers to everyone and their debt of sin. In this message, we will hear of two ways we can respond to this incredible offer, and it will impact those around us.

Luke 5:33-34

When you are invited over for dinner at a friend’s house, the proper etiquette is that no one eats until everyone has been served, right? Imagine the scene: a long dining table with friends and family crammed all around. The table is adorned with a spread of steaming dishes, bowls of gravy, plates stacked with biscuits, a juicy roast. The smells alone are enough to send you into a frenzy. But—you cannot take a single bite until every person has their plate. So, what happens in the waiting? Your anticipation and longing for the feast grows exponentially.

Right now, we are in a season of waiting; we await Jesus returning in His glory, and once He does, we will feast like never before! Until then, however, our longing and anticipation of His arrival grows daily. In this message, you'll hear about how that longing can drive us into a deeper relationship with Jesus.

A young family invited their neighbors over for dinner one night. Their four-year-old daughter, curiously asked her mother, “Who are they? Why are they eating here?” Her mother replied, “Daddy and I want to get to know them because they’re our neighbors, so we invited them over for dinner. Eating together is one of the easiest ways to make friends!” Later that night at bedtime, the mother peeked into her daughter's room and saw a curious scene: all her daughter’s dolls were sitting on a blanket surrounding plastic food. “What are you doing, honey?” she asked. “They’re all neighbors and they want to get to know each other!” the daughter explained excitedly.

Jesus modeled to His disciples the kind of lives and ministries He wanted for them, and His practice of sharing a meal with others was intentionally laid out as an example. In this message, you'll learn how opening your home and dinner table can have lasting impacts on the kingdom of God.

Luke 6:27-36

Statistics show that young people today are lonelier than ever before in human history, and social scientist Arthur Brooks surmises that society is experiencing a “loneliness epidemic.” He explains some of this by the idea that our culture has emphasized safety over risk and has therefore impeded our ability to love others who are different than us. Love, especially loving others who are difficult to love, requires risk.

Jesus knows how loving our enemies grates against our flesh and instigates fear. He knew what He was saying when He taught the principle of “turn the other cheek.” However, Jesus doesn’t deliver an impossible command and leave it up to us: He Himself supplies the very love He’s asking us to give. In this message, we will hear how Jesus wants us to treat our enemies, and how we can carry it out.

Most of us have heard, or used, the phrase “Fake it ‘til you make it”, right? The implication is that if you are unfamiliar with something, you can just put on a façade that will convince others that you are actually very knowledgeable about the topic so you can stumble along until you either learn enough to get by or finish the task without being challenged on your knowledge. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t!

Truth is not a fake it ‘til you make it situation, however. A more apt phrase for truth would be “You either know it, or you don’t.” Scripture proclaims that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life; so, to know truth, we must know Jesus! Tomorrow morning, we are continuing our advent series, and we will hear about truth, knowledge, and why they go hand-in-hand.

Mark 2:1-13

Have you ever been to a really good restaurant? You know the kind: you can smell its pleasing aroma as soon as you step out of the car into the parking lot. You walk in and every table has a tantalizing dish; you order an appetizer because you can’t wait any longer. What does an appetizer do? It increases anticipation of the meal. The appetizer isn’t the meal; it simply whets your appetite. It makes you wonder, “If the appetizer is this good, how much better is the entrée?”

John the Baptist paved the way for the long-awaited Messiah. He wasn’t the savior; he was simply the appetizer. When Jesus came and defeated sin and death, He fully satisfied our hunger for salvation. Tomorrow morning, we will continue to explore the depths of God’s generous heart and what He gave to us through His only Son Jesus.

Matthew 2:1-8

Throughout antiquity, creation has been held in high esteem by most cultures; its undeniable beauty and power lead many to believe some kind of deity was responsible for it. Notably, the heavens were of utmost importance in ancient religions and astronomy played a vital role in their belief systems. Some viewed the stars as lanterns for the angels, some thought they were the nail heads holding up the sky, still others believed stars to be the children of the sun and moon. Clearly, the skies have always drawn mankind’s gaze heavenward.

We know that a Deity is in fact responsible for this beautiful creation. And as the Almighty Creator, He can and does use His creation to accomplish His will. When we gather together tomorrow morning, we will hear about one of the mightiest acts in creation and its far-reaching impact.

1 Peter 5:8-14

Two friends were having dinner at a restaurant. A sign over the coat rack read, “Keep watch over your coat.” One gentleman was constantly craning his neck around to make sure his coat was still there, taking pains to see around other guests as they walked by. His friend, without regard for his own coat, said, “You can stop checking on our coats, they’re fine!” The first man replied, “I’m only watching mine; yours has been gone for half an hour.”

Keeping watch is certainly important for our physical safety and belongings, but it is even more important for our spiritual safety. Jesus charged His followers to keep watch many times, just as Peter does at the end of his letter. Join us tomorrow morning as we hear Peter’s final words of encouragement and admonition.

There was a popular TV show on the CBS network called “Undercover Boss” that ran from 2010-2022. The premise of the show is for a company’s top executive to go undercover and work in various entry-level positions to gain a deeper understanding of the company and its employees. At the end of the week, the boss reveals their identity and surprises everyone. They often learn more about themselves than the company though when hearing amongst employees about the character traits that are respected and valued. Many times, the employees appreciated the bosses that showed empathy, humility, and servant-leadership above intellect and authority.

While our modern American culture prides itself on independence and personal freedoms, the Bible teaches that pride comes before a fall and that the meek will inherit the earth. On Sunday morning we will look further into biblical leadership in the church and the crucial role we all play.

1 Peter 4:12-19

There are some students bearing the name of Christ in public schools who receive ridicule and teasing for their faith. As parents, when we witness our children suffering for their convictions we are tempted to swoop in and carry out swift justice. Sometimes we ourselves are on the receiving end of persecution, in the workplace or just out running errands.

But, how many of us have celebrated this harsh treatment? Have we ever skipped away from a crowd of jeering and let out a “Woohoo!” Well of course the answer is no, but did you know that not only are we encouraged to rejoice, but we actually have the ability to do it in the face of suffering? Jesus has given us every reason to not fear suffering, and every reason to be encouraged by it! Tomorrow morning we’ll hear more about this incredible truth and how we can live it out.

According to a study done in 2021, 1 in 4 Americans volunteer their time in nonprofit organizations. In a separate study done in 2023, it was reported that the percentage of church members who volunteer their time is about 1 in 5. While the numbers aren’t too different (and different studies yield varying results), that’s where the problem lies isn’t it?

As the body of Christ, giving our time and resources should involve every single one of us. Isn’t that what would make the world stop and stare? To see a group of people otherwise unacquainted spending their free time and talents on serving each other.

Tomorrow morning we will hear more about Peter’s letter giving instruction on how the church should live in a way that stands out from the world.

Have you ever played on a sports team and had a coach who had never played the sport themselves? It doesn’t seem like the greatest idea, but it happens. What usually ends up happening? The players don’t trust the coach! They think, “Yeah yeah, you’re yelling at us, but you couldn’t do this!” Compare that with the trust that comes from a coach who has been through it all and instructs from a place of tried-and-true wisdom. Night and day difference!

As we run our Christian race, we can do it knowing that our Savior “coach” has already run it perfectly! He felt every anguish, every temptation, every pain and hurdle; He has been through all of it, came out the other side perfectly, and has come back to coach us through it. Tomorrow morning, come and listen to what our Suffering Savior has done for you!

In the late 19th century, the Colt .45 SAA revolver was given the nickname “Peacemaker.” One suggested theory on why it was called the Peacemaker has to do with its popular use among lawmen, and with it being the weapon of choice in the Wild West. The idea is that you would comply with the demands of the owner of the revolver, thereby enforcing “peace.”

Thankfully, Almighty God calls us to a much better, true peace both with Himself and with other believers. The God of all peace has set forth the guidelines for His children to follow and put into practice. With so much to celebrate tomorrow during our Grand Opening, please come and be encouraged through the preaching of His Word and learn how to cultivate peace in your life and the lives of those around you.

A common scene when a younger child receives a brand new LEGO set is that they open all the packages, dump the pieces into one big pile, and begin to put them together at random, leaving the instruction book cast aside and forgotten. Naturally, frustration ensues, and the child becomes less than eager to press on and finish the project. The resulting creation looks nothing like the picture on the box.

Much of the world approaches marriage in the same way. The excitement of the wedding day causes the instruction book to become a distant memory, and the bride & groom begin piecing together their new partnership at random. After a while they take a step back and see that it looks nothing like they thought it would. Frustration ensues, and they become less than eager to press on. Tomorrow morning, we will hear Peter give the instructions for marriage, what pieces are needed, and how it should look.

Superheroes have become a large part of modern culture. Audiences everywhere are drawn to these larger-than-life characters displaying awe-inspiring powers and abilities. In more recent years there has been an increased interest in learning about a superhero’s origin story—the “where it all began” explanation that led to the character becoming super.

Christians have their own origin story, and it began about 2,000 years ago on an old, rugged cross. Jesus’ death paved the way for believers to become new creations, capable of unthinkable deeds. Much like Peter Parker awakening with new super abilities from the radioactive spider venom coursing through his veins, Christians awaken to a new life filled with the Holy Spirit, the very presence of God Himself.

1 Peter 2:11-17

In an effort to preserve endangered animals, scientists have created programs to breed those animals in captivity and then release them into the wild. Unfortunately, the captive-bred animals often do not survive after being released. They’re not accustomed to the environment, they haven’t learned enough survival skills, and they don’t fear humans enough to stay away from poachers. They become foreigners in their own land.

Likewise, we become foreigners and aliens when we bear the name of Christ. We look, act, and think differently. There is a great temptation to blend in and ease the strain, however Peter reminds us that Jesus has paved the way for us to live joyfully as foreigners as we await our true home. Join us tomorrow for a time of equipping and encouraging in the Word.

On January 2, 1922, the Texas A & M Aggies faced off against Centre College, the nation’s top-ranked football team. As the grueling game pressed on, the team was low on energy and morale. An ex-football player, E. King Gill, was called on for backup. He suited up and stood on the sidelines at the ready, waiting to step in. He had never played for the Aggies, but at that moment, he was an Aggie as far as he knew—the famous 12th Man. This tremendous show of support was exactly what the team needed. They won the game. Gill was never called in.

When God calls a sinner to repentance, to walk in newness of life, He calls them into a whole family of fellow sinners-saved-by-grace. Tomorrow morning, we will dig into this truth about God’s chosen people.

There was a powerful king who was preparing for his son’s fast-approaching wedding day; the palace grounds were filled with hustle and bustle as servants dashed about. The excitement was palpable, and it was all the king could talk about. Finally, the day arrived, and the feast was prepared with decadent treats, the finest meats, the sweetest fruits. The king sent out his fastest servants to call on the guests. He and his son eagerly awaited inside the beautifully ornate chapel for their friends and family to fill the seats and join in the celebration. After too much time had passed, the king was astonished to see his servants return alone. “Where are the guests?” he inquired. The servants nervously glanced at each other and stammered, “Th-they’re not c-coming, Your Majesty.”

Little Louise McMorris was born with oculocutaneous albinism type 1, which causes nystagmus and a misrouting of ocular nerves from the absence of melanin. Little Louise was given a very special pair of glasses as a baby that allowed her to see her mother for the very first time. When the glasses were placed on her, Louise lit up and locked eyes with her mama. Her mother said, “It’s like she really saw me.” Her mother had always been there, but Louise didn’t have the eyes to see her. Right now, as Christians, we have faith that allows us to see dimly as through veiled glass, but one day we will see Christ clearly and our faith will become reality. In almost every post-apocalyptic novel and film, there is a catastrophic event that virtually destroys the economy and cripples the infrastructure of America. There is an inescapable leveling that takes place because of that: the rich and poor are suddenly in the same position. Whether you own a million dollars or ten dollars, it won’t buy you anything! You can either cling to a currency that won’t get you what you need, or you can acknowledge your desperate need for help. And so it is with all of man before the cross of Christ: all must admit their desolation and need. The command is to come and receive, not come and bring. Then, imagine that you bring out a new wave of gifts. Bursting with excitement, they tear through them and are overjoyed with the abundance. Then, you bring out another wave, and another, and another. Can you imagine what that would feel like for them? And yet God is so much more abundant in His giving towards us! This excerpt from C.S. Lewis’ famous The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is in response to the children’s questioning of whether Aslan is to be trusted because of his great power. The answer is simple: “But he’s good.” The God who demands holiness and justice can have peace with sinners when His wrath is satisfied. When the debt is paid, there is no separation between God and His children. But how can this happen? Can there be real hope for restoration? Tomorrow morning, come and hear the good news of how this has been made possible.

In the movie “Hook”, Robin Williams plays the grown-up Peter Pan. Captain Hook, seeking revenge, kidnaps Peter’s two children and holds them hostage. Peter returns to Neverland to save the captives, but in one crucial scene, all hope is seemingly lost. His children literally hang in the balance as they watch their dad try to save them to no avail. The children are horrified, and Captain Hook is elated. 

Dear Christian, you HAVE been saved and set free; God saved His children from captivity long ago, and He has saved His children once and for all through Christ. Tomorrow morning we will hear God’s call to Israel (and you) to rise up and rejoice, salvation is at hand!

Driving along you felt confident and assured that you knew where you were going; despite several signs (and your spouse) telling you to turn, you ignored them.  Then, you soon found yourself somewhere you didn’t want to be: lost. It’s easy to lose hope when you don’t know where you are, and all you want to be is back home where it’s familiar and comforting! Israel felt abandoned and hopeless in their exile, lost in a land that was scary and unfamiliar, but God had a word of hope for them. Paul Alexander, known as “Polio Paul” passed away March 11, 2024 after spending over 70 years in an iron lung. He was diagnosed with polio at age 6 during the height of the epidemic in 1952; he became paralyzed from the waist down, rendering him completely dependent on a machine to provide his oxygen. If Paul had looked at the iron lung and declared, “I don’t need you anymore,” and walked away, it would’ve been a foolish and fatal decision.

As created beings, we are entirely dependent on our Creator for our very life and breathe, and yet how many times have we said to God, “I don’t need you anymore.” Join us on Sunday to hear about our dependence on God and the blessing it brings.

Author Katharine Lee Bates penned the above poem-turned-song “America the Beautiful” in 1895 after being inspired by the natural beauty she saw during a trip to Colorado Springs. It has since become the unofficial anthem of the United States, declaring the country’s brotherhood, blessings, and bounty.

As believers, we know that Christ is our Lord and Savior. And we also remember that Jesus said we would not be removed from the world, but that we would remain in it. How do we walk in the tension of being citizens of a worldly country, yet also citizens of heaven? Is it right to take pride in political success and power? How do we balance our hope in the visible and invisible?

When her enslaver fell into financial trouble, a newlywed Harriet Tubman realized her family would soon be torn apart and sold for top dollar. It was then she faced unthinkable danger by attempting an escape from slavery. At the end of her long journey from Maryland to Philadelphia, Tubman had achieved her lifelong dream of freedom—but her story didn’t end there.

Selflessly, and fueled by her Christian faith, Tubman dedicated her life to setting others free. As a Conductor in the Underground Railroad, she sacrificed her own safety to bring approximately 70 people—including her family—to freedom. From there, she continued to fight in both the abolitionist and suffragist movements until her death in 1913.

It was a Saturday with nothing planned, so you decided to surprise your kids with a trip to Chuck E. Cheese. A few hours later, the tokens have been spent, the pizza eaten, and the last of their over-priced prizes secured.

From your seat at the table, you see the kids make their way over to you with smiling faces and, without a word from you, start gathering their things and putting on their coats. Your middle child remarks, “Wow, what a day we’ve had! You didn’t have to do this, you know, but you really made our day. Probably best to head home now. Thanks again for everything!”

If you’ve ever raised kids—or set foot in a Chuck E. Cheese—this might sound like an alternate universe. Perhaps something like this feels more familiar: “Can’t we stay just 5 more minutes! All I’m saying is we barely got any tokens today…plus I’m still hungry. Why can’t we get dessert? I’m only asking for one more ride, but you won’t even give me that!”

History celebrates stories like the Battle of Hamel because there’s something about them that lifts our spirits and fills us with hope. When all seems lost, don’t we like to believe good could still win out in the end?

In two weeks, our nation will commemorate St. Patrick’s Day, but amid the leprechauns, shamrocks, and corned beef, does anyone remember what we’re celebrating?

Maewyn Succat, later known as St. Patrick, was born in Britain in the fourth century A.D. Shortly before Patrick turned 16, his family’s villa was attacked by pirates, who abducted him to their homeland of Ireland and sold him as a slave. It was there, enslaved in a foreign land, that Patrick encountered Jesus. After six years of harsh labor, Patrick finally escaped his oppressors and embarked on a two-year journey home. Safely returned to his family at last, the young man soon began to sense the call of God to do something absolutely mad: journey back to Ireland and share the Gospel with the very people who had enslaved him. Despite fierce opposition, that is exactly what Patrick did. Selflessly, he devoted his life to proclaiming the message of Christ throughout Ireland, by which an entire nation was transformed by the Gospel.

As we reflect on the radical, self-giving love of St. Patrick, we recognize the high calling placed on everyone who claims to follow Jesus. Join us this Sunday as our upcoming message challenges how you and I respond to “The World’s Hatred” today.

Have you ever placed your go-to order from a restaurant, only to be disappointed? In 2021, fast food giant Taco Bell experienced a widespread shortage of multiple ingredients—including chicken, beef, beans, and its signature hot sauce.

The floundering supply chain led once-loyal customers to flood social media with complaints: “For anyone craving Taco Bell tonight, I’ll save you the drive.”

2023 marked a historic year as LeBron James shattered Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 38-year tenure as the leading scorer in NBA history and Tom Brady retired from the NFL with record-breaking stats that outperformed the legendary Drew Brees. Millions responded in praise. Fans could barely contain themselves. And these are just games.

The language change is so abrupt it’s as if these three verses don’t even fit the psalm. Yet, through the contrast these verses provide, we discover our only hope of loving God for God.

This week we study a psalm that embodies life on the struggle bus. The psalmist longs to be at the Temple praising God as he has done before. But life has him somewhere else, in far more challenging circumstances, and he’s yearning for relief. But Psalm 42 provides prayer tools to help us turn our eyes upward when spiraling down.

If we’re going to love God for God, then God must do something, and we must do something. In this week’s message, we’ll discover those two things.

When David wrote Psalm 63, he did so from an experience of being captivated by God. He is so enamored with who God is and what God does for him that his heart overflows into these eleven verses.

Civil conflict can tear apart nations, companies, and even churches. But the war the apostle Paul addresses is a personal struggle – we are the battleground! Before entering into the beauty and hope of Romans 8 next week, we must first traverse this last thorny section of Romans 7 as we reach the end of our series, “New or New-ish?”

Have you ever been on the receiving end of a bait and switch? You’re enticed to purchase an apparent bargain (say, a Rolex from a street vendor) but receive a vastly inferior product (it tarnishes quickly and doesn’t keep time).

Sin is constantly making us such offers regarding our freedom. It promises greater liberties, but we end up more entangled.

The Christian life has never been for the faint of heart – not in the first century and still not in the twenty-first century. Doubt, sadness, and temptation are as present as ever, waging war internally, harassing our souls, and seeking to snuff out our faith. In 1911, Julia H. Johnston penned the lyrics to the hymn, Grace Greater Than Our Sin. The chorus is quite simple:

Grace, grace, God’s grace,

Grace that will pardon and cleanse within;

Grace, grace, God’s grace,

Grace that is greater than all our sin.

That last line causes so many Christians to wobble in their faith. The operative word is “all.” Do you believe that God’s grace exceeds ALL your sin?

In this week’s passage from the book of Matthew, we witness Jesus heal two women. The younger, the daughter of a synagogue leader, had died. The older suffered from a chronic condition lasting years. Having heard such stories many times before, we may be overly familiar with Jesus’ power to resurrect the dead and heal the sick. But when we observe the cultural context in which these miracles took place, a powerful lesson emerges that both women and men need to receive.

Are you someone who likes change? Or do you prefer the way things were? Often, our answer depends on the lens through which we look.

Last week in Matthew 9, we saw the Pharisees ask Jesus' disciples about the company he was keeping. This week, John the Baptist's disciples approach Jesus regarding his own disciples' behavior. While legitimate, each question belied how the different parties saw the situation. But Jesus' explanation brings clarity, and his vivid illustration provides a larger lesson for everyone, including his followers today!

Have you been in the presence of someone almost famous? What was your experience? Were you underwhelmed, or did that experience exceed your hopes? As we begin Matthew 9 in our series Outsiders In, the reputation of Jesus precedes his presence. People are anticipating something special upon his arrival. But when a few men lower their paralyzed friend down through a roof, Jesus says and does things even the crowd and religious leaders don’t expect. It reminds us that Jesus is far more than a healer.

After Jesus calms the storm on the Sea of Galilee, he and the disciples arrive on the opposite shore and immediately encounter two demoniacs. What happens next is not surprising – Jesus drives the demons out of the men. Less predictable is the destination of the demons and the community's response. The contrast displayed in the reaction of the two healed men challenges us to consider how well we receive the presence of Jesus.

You’ve probably seen a YouTube video of a celebrity masquerading as someone else. Maybe it’s an old dude with grey hair dunking on the young guys in a pick-up basketball game or a motley-looking but great-sounding band busking in the New York subways. They appear among ordinary people in everyday environments, but everyone is shocked and awed when their identity becomes known. The experience the disciples had one evening with Jesus compares. When they all got in a boat to cross the Sea of Galilee, he appeared to be their rabbi and teacher. But a dangerous storm revealed him to be someone far different. Like the disciples, the story also makes us ask, “What kind of man is this?”

We typically ascribe outcome-based definitions to the terms "easy" and "hard." When we can do something ourselves, we say it's easy. If we're unsure of our success, we call that hard. But the stuff we believe is manageable often shows we don't know what we don't know. 

This week in our Outsiders In series, Jesus is on the move when he interacts with a couple of fellows misguided in their understanding of discipleship. They quickly discover Jesus holds a much higher view of what it means to truly follow God.

“Those people!” Have you ever uttered this phrase as an exclamation or in a sentence? E.g., “I don’t know what’s wrong with those people.” When we observe the manifestation of human brokenness and its ramifications, it is easy to lose all faith in humanity. When that brokenness invades our home, it is hard not to feel downright defeated. This week we see Jesus perform what is perhaps the smallest of his miracles – the abatement of a simple fever. Yet, this act reveals what heals the ills of all humanity. It promises the immediate impact felt in Peter’s house can also be a reality in our homes.

Football season has arrived! It's a time for fans to tune in on weekends and cheer for their alma mater or favorite team. But for some, football goes way beyond appointment viewing. Because there are fans, and then there are "the faithful." They're at every game, home and away, wearing team colors. They know the starters, the bench players, and the recruits. They show up early, leave late, and replay game highlights. Their faith in the team seems amazing.

In week two of the Outsiders In series, we'll see a man approach Jesus, who wore a different type of uniform. He asks an expected question backed by unexpected conviction, giving us a glimpse of what having true faith really means.

This week, Pastor Jon kicks off our Fall Series entitled Outsiders In: Jesus’ unique authority to make all things new. With each interaction, his fame grew as people recognized his divine identity.

It all starts when Jesus is approached boldly by a man with leprosy. What would this great teacher do in such an awkward encounter? Of course, Jesus heals him, but how he does so indicates our deep need to be healed as well.

It used to be junk mail. Now it’s spam. We’re talking about the daily detritus that floats into your postal box or email inbox that you don’t want, didn’t ask for, and has no value for your life. As our summer series in Ecclesiastes closes, we discover that not everything is meaningless. Indeed, there is something significant for us to hold on to as the Teacher winds down his reflections.

Again this week, we look through the lens of the "Teacher" in Ecclesiastes to wrestle with the question: Can I ever really have control of my life?

Most of us have stuff – plenty of stuff. And if we’re honest, we keep a list in our heads of other stuff that would make our lives better: home improvements, vehicle or technology upgrades, vacations, etc. If we had some extra cash, we know how and where we’d spend it! Planning for future purchases isn’t bad, but trusting in them to make our life more complete? That’s different and symptomatic of a deeper malady. Fortunately, the gospel provides the antidote.

We all know there’s no “I” in TEAM, and things are better when we work together. But those phrases are easier said than done, especially when individualistic impulses run deep. Our culture and our hearts subtly tell us we don’t need others, and we don’t need God. While going it alone can feel empowering and lead to a level of human glory, it has diminishing returns often realized too late. Responding to the gospel realigns our perspective and provides the antidote for anxious self-reliance.

Have you ever tried something just to try it? Maybe you wanted to see what it was like or what effect it had on you, and by doing so, learn if you’d ever want to try it again - like bungee jumping or eating escargot. That’s the approach the author of Ecclesiastes takes toward pleasure. He tried everything: drinking and imprudence, building estates, amassing wealth, licentious relationships. In the end, he found none of these desires delightful. But the maturing Christian can learn from this teacher’s experiment with pleasure and follow God’s path instead.

Each year, the rankings come out. The US News and World Report lists the best universities and colleges. (It even ranks the best Michigan high schools – in 2022, Novi is #7 and Northville #8). People then flock to these rankings to see where their alma mater sits or to consider what school their child should attend.

Here in the United States of America, we place a high value on education. But to what end? We fret about GPAs, honor societies, and test scores. In and of themselves, none of these things are bad. But ultimately, what is our pursuit of education seeking to accomplish? Is it wisdom? And if so, is this where we find wisdom in its highest concentration?

How many of us work hard? Probably most of us. Why? Because life is hard work. Simply put, a certain amount of effort is required to have basic food and shelter. And depending on the quality of the food and shelter you desire, considerably more effort may be required. Therefore, it is an easy jump to begin equating our worth with the volume, significance, and product of our labor. But what changes by all of that hard work? Does it give your life greater meaning? Or is pursuing a life of toil and goals and getting merely an illusion?

Emotions are tricky. For some of us, voicing the things in our hearts is effortless and done frequently. For others, it isn't easy to let our feelings show, even to those with whom we are most intimate. And all of us could probably employ a bit more emotional range when talking with God.

Thankfully, the Psalms exemplify expressive communication with our heavenly father. As we wrap up our prayer series this weekend, Psalm 16 will challenge us to rethink three critical areas to unlock our prayer life more fully.

We all love trips – especially during summer vacation! Whether it's an excursion up north to the family cottage, a Disney trip with the kids, or somewhere in between, we love breaking the norm and getting away. During each trip's planning phase, the question isn't whether we'll love it but "is it worth it?" Do we want to spend that much time with our relatives? Will Disney be worth all the cost, travel, and stress? In so many ways, the answer is likely "Yes!" So we go.

As we continue our prayer series, we will explore a Psalm about journeying into God's presence. We'll hear the writer's perspective about whether or not it's worth it to take that trip, which will help us answer that question for ourselves.

So far in our Impossible Math series, the Apostle Paul has boldly asked the more wealthy gentile Christians in Corinth to prepare a collection for impoverished Jewish believers in Jerusalem. A big ask! The Corinthians seemed eager at first, but their enthusiasm has waned. To spur them on, Paul employs the example of the openhanded Macedonians and sends an advance delegation headed by Titus. But in case those are not motivation enough, Paul provides a further reason for making a generous gift, and it’s the best one yet!

“It just doesn’t add up.” How many times have you said that about your personal finances? Oftentimes, the stuff you’d like to do with your money doesn’t seem very possible – especially charitable giving. After all, the expenses are added up, where does that money come from? The same was true for the Corinthian church. They had made a commitment to a giving campaign for the church in Judea but were struggling to follow through. That’s when Paul shares a story about another church that involves some impossible math. Continuing into Chapter 8 of 2 Corinthians, this week Pastor Jon begins a new series on the topic of generosity and giving. We were going to call it “Money Matters” but then changed the title. The Apostle Paul begins our Easter weekend passage with this statement: “Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand.” Why does Paul feel he needs to issue a reminder? Because it’s easy to get our priorities out of whack and forget what is most important. How often do we major in the minors and minor in the majors? For example, we are easily frustrated with people’s idiosyncrasies and hypercritical of cultural issues, yet are slow to acknowledge or address the most vital need of our own heart and life – that we’re sinful and need a savior! This year on Good Friday and Easter, we’re going to rehearse that gospel. We’re going to remind ourselves of that gospel, just as Paul reminded the Corinthian believers. Because if we don’t hold firmly to this gospel, we’ve believed in vain. Let’s celebrate together that which is of first importance!

Have you ever struggled in a relationship? Hopefully so! If not, the relationship probably wasn’t all that important. Truth is, the most transformative relationships are complex. On one hand, they bring comfort and joy. On the other, sorrow and pain. We tend to much prefer comfort and joy relationships. After all, when things run smoothly, relationships are easy. But when the sorrow and pain arrive it becomes very tempting to bail out. Since this relational complexity exists between the Apostle Paul and the Corinthian Church, let’s learn from them! As followers of Jesus, there is always something new with us. If God’s mercies are “new every morning” and we are a “new creation” in Christ, newness will be our daily experience. But if it’s not, what’s missing? What are we not understanding about being “in Christ” and what it means to be reconciled to God? From this week’s passage, we’ll discover the ways in which reconciliation transforms our lives and the lives of those around us.

How many times a day do you let out a groan? Sometimes the source of the groan is physical – you’re sore from a recent workout, or you’re getting older and are attempting to tie your shoes. Sometimes the source is emotional – sadness at world affairs, or the frustration from having to suffer fools. But every groan is, in some way, an expression of longing; not just the reprieve of a burden we currently carry, but a profound desire for something new, and better. This week’s passage will leave you with confidence that God hears our longings and intends to fulfill them, but in the most amazing way.

Anyone who achieves greatness and glory sees things a little differently. Take the Olympic athlete. You and I see someone who may have great talent, great resources, great lineage, or great privilege. And some or all of these external things may be true. But we don’t see how hard they work, how much they sacrifice, or their singularity of focus on a distant prize. For four minutes we focus on what we see. But for four years, they’ve focused on something unseen.

In this week’s passage, the Apostle Paul challenges God’s church not to dwell on the difficulties of living in our present age, but to discover the power God unleashes through jars of clay.

Have you ever observed human behavior when someone pulls out a camera? Bodies straighten, chins jut out, hair gets tossed, eyes widen, shoulders broaden, and smiles appear. No one wants to appear at a disadvantage. We want to look attractive, composed, focused, and strong. Yet, such a pose belies an ever-present reality that people are easily breakable – emotionally, relationally, financially, and in so many other ways. This fragility can cause us to lose heart. As Christians, we can wonder why God asks us to carry the glorious message of the gospel in vessels that are nothing special. As we continue to trace the Apostle Paul’s argument through the first seven chapters of 2 Corinthians, he unveils a pointed metaphor that gets to the paradox of the Christian message and life: jars of clay.

“You have to try this. It will change your life!” Has anyone ever said that to you? It usually means your friend discovered something far superior to what he or she had known before. Maybe Ms. Frozen Pizza was introduced to wood-fired pizza. Or Mr. Carnival Ride Guy went to Cedar Point for the first time. The experience is night and day. Likewise, the Christian life can seem mundane, even oppressive to some, with lots of perceived “do's and don'ts” and so many “shoulds.” But a true experience of the Gospel changes everything!

Though cultural issues are often complex, it is all too easy to become polarized, seeing only two sides. Sometimes the side with which we most identify can seem like the correct side... even the only side. Can we all agree that weakness is just the worst?! It’s no fun to experience debilitating sickness, feel powerless to change your circumstances, or not be able to figure something out. In fact, He views human weakness from a completely different perspective…as an opportunity! And He longs for us to see it this way, too!

Something’s missing. It’s missing from the relationships in our families and our workplaces. Sometimes, it’s even missing in the church. Unfortunately, we’re not talking about conflict – there is plenty of that to go around, and we probably experience more than our fair share daily. When that conflict gets intense, often the easiest thing is to just walk away. But that’s not how it should be, and not how God intended things to be. Because the Gospel is meant to produce something far better in us, in our relationships, and in our culture. But it takes work – often in the form of honest self-evaluation.

Do you have people in your life who usually say “yes” to everything, but sometimes don’t mean it? Even if their aims are good, their follow-through isn’t so much. It increasingly becomes difficult to not only trust their answers but also to credit their intentions. This week we find the Apostle Paul in such a predicament with the Corinthian Christians. They found him fickle and were unsure if his stated aspirations toward them were real. But in Paul’s profound response to the Corinthians, we see the life-changing power in God’s response to us.

Even under normal circumstances, achieving unity is hard. But when culture is polarized, it seems impossible. The first-century Corinthian Church was discordant; comprised of Jewish and Gentile believers – some slaves, others free – and from a wide stratum of social classes. Paul knew the Church can only stand strong if believers are united. Therefore, he begins this letter with a couple of key ways that the Gospel of Jesus connects everyone. Along the way, Paul reveals God’s chosen tool to pry us from our self-reliance.

Jesus repeatedly said that He would come a second time. Here is the fulfillment of His promise. This final act of revelation and judgment sees the Son of God descending from heaven to establish His righteous rule upon the Earth. In one powerful appearing He destroys the remnants of Satan’s kingdom in the battle of Armageddon, after which He establishes His righteous administration upon the Earth for a period of 1,000 years, prior to the onset of the eternal kingdom.

From the Garden of Eden forward it has been Satan’s intention to thwart God’s rule on Earth and to establish his own kingdom. This was the offer he made to Jesus during the wilderness temptations. These chapters show that conflict unfolding in the final 7-year tribulation period on Earth, leading up to the return of Jesus.

The Glorified Lord Addresses His Churches

Much like a modern postcard, Second and Third John are very short letters that would have fit on a single sheet of papyrus. John's brevity was due to his audience - people that he was hoping to visit "face to face" in the near future. Second John is addressed to “the chosen lady,” likely a reference to the church in a certain city. Third John is addressed to Gaius, who was a leader in a local church (equivalent to a modern day “pastor”). Both letters continue a theme from First John, namely the need for believers to “walk in truth” amidst heresies that were threatening the churches.

Along with James (his brother) and Peter, John was the third member of Jesus' inner circle. He lived many decades after the other apostles, and was key in the establishment and growth of the first-century church. Along with the Gospel of John and the book of Revelation, he authored three short letters, unique in their emphasis that love for others is the essential evidence of true love for God. In the first section of 1 John, we see that faith must be founded on a true view of Jesus, obedience to God is evidence that we truly know Him, and Love for people and love for God go hand in hand.

Dangers Ahead

The overall theme of this letter is that our greatest testimony will often come through our greatest trials. At the time of its writing, some believers were suffering severely, and Peter was challenging them to keep their hope fixed on God. Even though this world might mistreat them for their faith in Christ and deprive them of justice, they would surely be rewarded in the next. Our heavenly Father will always honor our faithful perseverance!

Usually, we think of emptiness as a bad thing; a negative. Like when your refrigerator is out of groceries, or your closet is empty because all your clothes are in the hamper. But many times, emptiness can also be a good thing; a positive. Like when you find that empty parking space in the first row at the grocery store, or discover that $20 bill in your pants pocket (before it goes through the wash). Yes, empty can be bad or good. But as far as Easter goes, the empty tomb of Jesus is a very good thing. Because with the empty tomb – with the resurrection of Jesus – some very good things come to us, and those things all add up to new life!

People have always come to Jesus for a variety of reasons. Many come to Him because of the miracles He’s done in their lives. Others come for the meaning and purpose He gives. Looking at Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, we will examine the manner in which we come to Jesus. Do we come expecting Jesus to conform to our lifestyle? Or, will we follow a crucified Jesus who calls us to take up our cross and follow Him?

1 Peter 1 - Testimony Through Trials

As the letter of Hebrews concludes, the focus moves to having a faith that trusts God no matter what is happening on earth, and regardless how difficult it becomes to maintain allegiance to Him. To inspire that kind of faith, the writer commends to us an extended list of Old Testament heroes who held fast to their faith in God amidst the challenging circumstances of life.

In the religious life of Israel, the High Priest was the most important person, for he mediated the relationship between the people and God. In the second section of Hebrews, Jesus is identified as the Father’s supremely appointed High Priest who offers the perfect sacrifice for sins. But because this supreme high priest is also sympathetic with our weaknesses, we are encouraged to draw near Him to receive the mercy and grace we so desperately need in times of vulnerability and trial.

In the first century, pressure from Rome was making it increasingly difficult to be a Christian. As a result, some believers were fleeing for safety back into the “legal” religion they had come out of – Judaism. Written to those Jewish Christians considering abandoning their faith, the book of Hebrews makes the argument that Jesus Christ is superior to anyone or anything that they might turn back to, including angels, Moses, and the Old Testament priests and prophets.

As Paul's last letter draws to a close, he warns his spiritual son, Timothy, of what is to come in the following generations. A challenging future lies ahead for the servant of God in a world turning toward godlessness. Opposition will be strong; deception will be rampant; people will live in ways that are completely contrary to the ways God designed them to live. Thus, Timothy must stay rooted in the unchanging, inspired Word of God, reading it, living it, teaching it, and preaching it. Today, God calls his servants to nothing less.

Still in a Roman prison cell, Paul sensed his end was near and was ready to meet Jesus in heaven. But before departing, he wanted to breathe courage into the heart of his spiritual son, Timothy, who had many years of ministry yet ahead. Of the 83 verses in this letter, at least 54 are about finishing, fighting, enduring, and being faithful. These are his “last words” and through them we gain a true grasp of the passion of the Apostle Paul. If we take them to heart, they will serve as a powerful encouragement to us as well.

Just as Paul left Timothy in Ephesus to bring order to the churches in Asia Minor, so he left Titus on the Island of Crete to bring order to the churches in the various cities there. In this sermon, Pastor Bob melds the second half of 1 Timothy with the complimentary content of Titus to complete the framework from his previous message on how any local church can be an effective community. These additional marks of a healthy church include character, care, generosity, anticipation, and good deeds.

As we noted in our first lesson on Philippians, there was a problem with unity in the church. But the “problem beneath the problem” was one of focus. Paul’s primary purpose in this letter was to help them regain their focus on things above, so that their unity might be restored and their witness to their world might be effective.
From his Roman prison cell, Paul taught the Philippians by his words and by his example how to ‘live above’ the turmoil of this world. He taught them to desire to know Jesus more intimately, and let God work in their lives for their good, and for His good pleasure. We would be wise to take these admonitions as our own!

Paul and his team planted a church in Philippi on the 2nd missionary journey, amidst great opposition from the local authorities (Acts 16). Now, many years later, Paul is writing to these believers in Philippi from his prison cell in Rome. He encourages them to maintain strong unity and humility as they live alongside each other. From a prison cell, Paul models the fact that they can experience joy and contentment in any of life’s circumstances if they maintain an eternal perspective on life.

It’s been a challenging year to say the least. We could all use a little HOPE going forward. But so often we make the mistake of tying our HOPE to our circumstances. The result? We are HOPE-FUL when things are good; but HOPE-LESS when things are not so good. According to God’s Word, HOPE is not to be found in circumstances that constantly fluctuate. HOPE is found in a PERSON Who is steadfast and sure; One Who came into our world to be Our Savior and Friend; One Who Isaiah the prophet called "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, and Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). Join us this Christmas Eve as we look to the Incarnate Christ, the Son of God, to find HOPE for the coming year.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. The book of Philemon, Paul's shortest letter and one that would barely have filled a single papyrus sheet, does not attain the scope and depth of Paul's other letters. However, it accomplishes something very different — the telling of a real-life story. It’s a personal note to a close friend about a new friend they both have in common. It contains no great doctrine or vision, but what this little letter does give us is the image of a radically changed life.

Colossians 1&2 were focused on doctrinal issues, particularly related to the supremacy of Christ. Colossians 3&4 focus on “duty” issues, how we are able to live, and should live, in light of our connection to Christ. Here Paul covers many of the same ideas found in Ephesians 4-6, yet with some unique emphases. While Ephesians emphasized the believer’s duty to “walk worthy of your calling” (4:1), Colossians calls believers to “live in light of your true position in Christ” (3:1,2). Ephesians calls us to respond to the many blessings that God has given to us. Colossians calls us to respond to the new position we have as a result of our union with the risen and glorified Lord.

One of Paul’s most important letters was addressed to the church in a small, out-of-the-way place called Colossae. Why? Because teachers there were presenting a false view of Christianity. Instead of the centerpiece of salvation, Jesus was being presented simply as ‘a piece’ of the religious puzzle: a high-ranking angel, a mediator of some sort, a bestower of secret knowledge, or a prophet. Paul combated these heresies by reinforcing that Christ was God, the Creator, the One and only Redeemer, and the only way of salvation.

In Ephesians 1-3 the Apostle Paul writes of our high and privileged calling in Christ, but in chapters 4-6 he admonishes believers to walking worthy of this calling. Describing the various aspects of the believer’s life to show what this “worthy walk” looks like, he calls us to walk in unity, maturity, purity, love, caution, light, power, submission, and with our armor on.

In what may be his clearest argument in any of his letters, the Apostle Paul explains the two sides of “the gospel of reconciliation,” first emphasizing our individual reconciliation with God, second, our reconciliation with other human beings. According to the New Testament, the two great commandments – love God, love your neighbor – should always be seen as two sides of the same coin.

Filled with a lofty and detailed description of the privilege and power of being a believer in Jesus Christ, Paul’s letter to the young believers in Ephesus is a crucial treatise on the eternal plan of God, the blessings that follow believing in Christ, the state of all humanity before a Holy God, and the power of the Holy Spirit for those living a surrendered life. Paul spends most of the first chapter enumerating a long list of blessings that come to the believer through the person and work of Christ.

The final chapter of Romans is unusual in that it is the longest list of Paul’s friends, to whom he sends greetings. It reveals the extent to which relationships were important to Paul. It also specifically highlights the role of women in the life and ministry of Paul.

Relationships are challenging. Some are more challenging than others. How does God call us to approach the relationships in our lives? In this week's passage of Romans we find the Bible has very clear instructions on how to respond to three groups of people: those with whom we differ, those in authority, and those who are our neighbors.

When it comes to following Jesus, there are two main questions to answer: Have I said “YES” to the man on the cross? Have I said “YES” to me on the altar? For many Christians, the altar question looms large and remains unanswered. While salvation is what God has done for us, living for Jesus is our response, or ‘thank you’ note back to God.

In Romans 1-8, the Apostle Paul explained how any person, Jew or Gentile, can be brought back into relationship with God. This emphasis on the gift of God’s love for all people raised the question: What happened to God’s special plan for the Jewish people as outlined in the Old Testament? The question was especially pressing as the number of Gentiles flocking into the early church far outpaced the number of Jews. Paul addressed the Jew-Gentile question in Romans 9-11, and in doing so, he wrote about God’s sovereign and mysterious ways.

Forgiveness of all my sins, past, present and future and being made right with God by an act of His love and mercy – that’s amazing grace! That’s how a person becomes a child of God. That's what we covered in last week's message on Revisiting Romans 1-5.

But what about growing as a child of God? What about change? What about becoming more like Christ? Romans 6-8 is the most comprehensive discussion of the doctrine of sanctification found anywhere in the Bible's New Testament. Sanctification is the process by which God “cleanses us” and “grows us” as His forgiven children.

“Justification” deals with our release from sin’s penalty (Romans 1-5). “Sanctification” deals with our release from sin’s power (Romans 6-8). Thus, this is an important section for every child of God on the journey toward spiritual maturity, and what we'll be covering this week.

In Romans 1-5 we see that our real problem is the rejection of the one, true Creator-God. All other problems are offshoots of that. The religious person may “believe in God,” but their life still reveals a heart that strays from God’s ways. In the final evaluation, no one lives up to God’s standards. But God has a solution, and it's way less complicated than many think it to be.

Upside Down: The Sermon on the Mount - Week 6

As we continue through the Sermon on the Mount, we're seeing that the teachings of Jesus are not easy and that they go against the very culture we live in. But they also lead to freedom, and the best life possible. Today, Jesus has a warning about the dark side of ambition, which goes against the way we were designed to live.

In the sermon on the mount, Jesus begins to lay out a new way to live that is upside down to how the world operated then and still operates today. And in Matthew chapter 6, he addresses the hypocritical way in which religious people approached acts of righteous (giving, fasting, and prayer) and challenges his followers to not make a public performance of their private disciplines.

Upside Down: The Sermon on the Mount - Week 3

Speaking regarding sin and the heart, Jesus calls his followers to own the values, not simply obey the rules. In Matthew 5:21-37, he challenges us to avoid anger, lose lust, dismiss divorce, and talk truthfully.

To live the upside down life, we must live from the inside out. What does that mean? Simply put, living inside out means being daily transformed by Christ so I am not conformed to the world. We cultivate this life by loving obedience and daily surrender to God’s Word and Spirit, and by lovingly serving others.

In the Sermon on the Mount, especially the first twelve verses that make up the Beatitudes, Jesus lays out what it looks like to be a citizen of the Kingdom of God. God desires His people to be different: to live differently, speak differently, love differently, deal with conflict differently. What Jesus taught in these chapters was completely counter cultural and, like the early disciples, our choice is between following God in radical obedience or flowing with the culture to fit in.

This week Pastor Bob concludes our Conversations series by interviewing two young activists about their perspective on the civil unrest in our country and the role of the church. While these are difficult conversations about race and responsibility, it is important that we hear from the next generation.

Bob’s video interview with Bishop Vann is enhanced by the presence of Wendell Browning on stage. They discuss how the white, evangelical church must first begin to speak up about racial injustice. However, it isn’t enough join the black church in voice alone, but words needs to be backed up with tangible action. They also discuss what that action could look like.

In this week's wide-ranging conversation, Norflette opens with an emotional poem he wrote to encapsulate the experience people of color often have with their white brethren. He emphasizes how vital it is to build authentic relationships so this experience can really be heard and understood and systematic change can take hold.

Conversations: Responding to Racial Injustice - Week 1

The killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25 has launched a civil rights movement that is encompassing our nation and world. In response, Pastor Bob has been immersed in conversations with black leaders in the city of Detroit, asking questions and seeking to better understand how the church can and should act at this time. Because of those conversations, we are pivoting to a new four-week series about responding to racial injustice. This week, Bob shares his conversation with Sonny Smith, pastor of Detroit Church, where they discuss this time of civil unrest, the feeling of oppression, and what it means to be a dual citizen of earth and heaven.

The beauty of the Psalms is that they call us back to worship the one true God…who, unlike the false gods, is ultimately worthy of praise. David and the other writers of the Psalms knew this – and by writing the Psalms they were leaving bread crumbs for us to follow so that we could find where the true source of life comes from. We see clearly in Psalm 145 that there is only one worthy of our praise and worship.

Have you ever received something that, over time, turns out to be way better than you initially expected? How great is that?! What if, when it comes to God, there’s more to His love than we realize? In Psalm 107, King David implores us to be thankful for this love. Starting today, may we begin thanking God for being even better than we knew Him to be.

The Hebrew word “only” (AK!) starts six different lines of this psalm and that’s why it really is “the only psalm.” It’s a song of confident trust in ONLY the Lord and it really forces us to ask the question: In whom, or what, do we trust for our security in life?

The Psalms teach us how to be honest with God. No matter what we’re going through, God wants us to talk to Him openly and honestly, even emotionally. The most critical time to sing a song to God is when we have failed Him, when we have sinned; when we’ve fallen flat on our face and made a mess of things. This week we’re talking about Confession Songs.

Fight songs call out to the team and tell them that we believe in them. Against all odds, we cheer them on to push back the rival and lead us on to victory. It might surprise you to know that the Bible has its set of fight songs, too. About 16 of them are found in the book of Psalms, written mostly by the great King David during times when he was in a fight. Someone or something was trying to take him down, so he sings a fight song!

God knew that in this fallen world we would need to know how to sing the blues. The Lament Psalms teach us how to process our way through the deep valleys of life, and Psalm 13 is the classic lament Psalm. While only 6 verses, it contains all three key elements of healthy lament.

First reactions to disruption are often negative. But, sometimes disruptions are good! They lead to new opportunities and lend new perspectives. When God allows disruption in our lives, He’s often seeking invent something for us, just as he did for a woman named Mary. It was the best thing that ever happened to her.

Firm Foundation

It isn't often that our culture faces a challenge the magnitude of the COVID-19 crisis. As scary as it is, for Christ followers, it's an amazing opportunity to evaluate the strength of our foundation in Jesus, based on His parable of the wise and foolish builders in Matthew 7.

The challenge COVID-19 presents to our community, our nation, and our world seems huge. However, when we get a glimpse of the immensity of God, even our largest problems pale in comparison. Isaiah 40 is a great passage to remind us that a powerless people can lean on a powerful God in times of crisis.

Romans 3, 4 & 5 provides the fullest description in the Bible of the doctrine of salvation by grace, through faith in Jesus Christ. It is of utmost importance that we understand what is written here, as it will shape our answer to the core question: How can we be made right with God?

God’s mirror comes out in chapter 2 and the reflection the self-righteous person sees is not good. Romans 2 personalizes the problem of human sin. It shows that all of us fall short of God’s standards, even those who think they are very good.

We cannot properly understand God’s solution for our problem unless we first understand the problem. Like a doctor who gives us a clear diagnosis before talking about remedies, Paul analyzes the human condition under the microscope and finally declares that we “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

God With Us: Early Letters, Week 9
“Letters to a Troubled Church” (2 Corinthians 1–7)

The use of spiritual gifts in the Corinthian church had become a contentious issue, since people were valuing certain gifts more than others. Paul encourages the church to focus on the spirit in which those gifts were being exercised, with themes of unity, humility, love, selflessness, and orderliness.

Corinth was one of the most progressive cities in the Roman empire, ideally situated to be a center for commerce, shipping, and trade. It was not easy to live as a Christian in ancient Corinth, and Paul’s letters to this church deal with the many problematic issues they faced - moral struggles, divisions, doctrinal deviations, lawsuits, pride issues surrounding spiritual gifts, focus on human wisdom & eloquence, marriage issues, drunkenness during communion, etc.

God With Us: Early Letters, Week 4
James: Trials, the Tongue & Treasures (James 3-5)

This letter, written by the half-brother of Jesus, is among the earliest in the New Testament, and was addressed to Christian Jews who had been scattered throughout the Roman Empire. James, as the leader of the Jewish-Christian community, felt the responsibility to write a general pastoral letter giving guidance in how to live out the faith in a world that was hostile to Christians, and encouraging steadfastness in the face of trials.

The second major Christian doctrine defended in the Book of Galatians is the doctrine of sanctification by the power of the Spirit. Sanctification (“cleansing”) is the process by which we are made more and more like Jesus Christ. Paul will argue that sanctification is a work of the Spirit Who dwells within us, and is not accomplished by obedience to a set of rules.

Paul and Barnabas traveled through the Galatian region on their 1st missionary trip, planting churches in various cities (Acts 13, 14). After proclaiming the gospel, they strongly urged the new believers “to continue in the grace of God” (Acts 13:43). Yet, for these new believers, holding on to their freedom in Christ would not be so easy.
