Summary of the 2010-2011 Season

This post will summarize what happened with Oklahoma Academic Team during the 2010-2011 season.

Transition of Power

Early in the year, Matthew King, the elected president, realized that he could not fulfill his obligations to the office and to the organization because of his obligations to his doctoral program. Therefore, Maggie Larkin assumed the powers of the presidency for the season.

2010 ACF Fall Southwest

Oklahoma Academic Team hosted 2010 ACF Fall Southwest. Statistics were not kept for this tournament, so there is nothing to post here. This post will be updated if any information can be found.

April 30, 2011: 2011 Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament

Oklahoma Academic Team sent one team, consisting of Andrew Chandler, Maggie Larkin, and Daniel Page, to a mirror site of the 2011 Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament, held in Columbia, Missouri. The team finished in seventh place out of 12 teams with a 5-6 record. (The statistics show that the team has a 6-5 record, but the team scores for the final game against Harding A are switched.) November 7, 2009: TRASH Regionals Southwest

Oklahoma Academic Team hosted 2009 TRASH Regionals Southwest. Eight teams competed, and Bill O'Reilly Loves Teabagging (David Murphy, Mark Richey, and Jeremy White) defeated the Acafellas (Albert Bayer, Tyler Johnson, Trey Morris, Matt Nance, and Chris Romero) in the finals after both teams went 8-2 in round robin play. February 6, 2010: 2010 NAQT SCT, Region 11

Oklahoma Academic Team sent one team the Region 11 NAQT Sectional Championship Tournament at Missouri State University. Erin Cooper, Matthew King, and Brian Morrow competed in Division I and earned third place with a 7-5 record. Brian was the third-highest individual scorer with 47.66 points per 20 tossups heard. With a D-Value of 177.746 (34th place out of 78 teams), OAT did not finish well enough to qualify for a bid to the NAQT Intercollegiate Championship Tournament and did not accept a bid from the waiting list, thereby breaking a two-year streak of attending the NAQT ICT.

2010 ACF Regionals Southwest

Oklahoma Academic Team sent one team, consisting of Erin Cooper, Matthew King, Maggie Larkin, Gregory Maus, and Brian Morrow, to ACF Regionals Southwest at the University of Texas at Austin. A report and statistics will be posted here when they are found.

EFT 2009 Southwest Results

Oklahoma Academic Team sent three teams to compete at EFT 2009 Southwest at the University of Texas at Austin. After a single round-robin that lasted eleven rounds, Rice defeated Liberal Arts and Science Academy A to win the tournament in the first game of an advantaged final.

Every team that Oklahoma Academic Team sent to this tournament consisted of only first-year members.

Oklahoma B (Rhyker Benavidez, Brandon Ranallo, Nick Schlekewey, and Nathan Thomas) finished in seventh place with a 3-7 record. Oklahoma A (Alana Denning, Dillon Greenwell, and Tommy Kudirka) finished in tenth place with a 1-9 record, and Oklahoma C (Zeb Benbrook, Tom Hollars, Greg Maus, and Ginny Melton) finished in eleventh place with a 0-10 record. Brandon finished in tenth place in the individual standings with 29.5 points per game.

Two Tournaments in Texas

The Quiz Bowl Club at the University of Texas at Austin has announced that it will host two tournaments in October. The first is Early Fall Tournament 4 on October 4, and the second is ACF Fall 2009 South Plains on October 31. These tournaments are intended to be fun introductions to collegiate quiz bowl. In accordance with the stated goals of these two tournaments, players new to collegiate quiz bowl are definitely encouraged to play at them.

Early Fall Tournament 4 will not require packet submission, but ACF Fall will require packet submission for any team containing at least one member who played in an academic collegiate quiz bowl tournament before September 1, 2008.

First Practice for Fall 2009

Oklahoma Academic Team is pleased to announce that it will hold its first practice of the fall 2009 semester on Thursday, September 3, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM in Kaufman Hall 138. This practice will be open to both current and new members. Prospective members are encouraged to attend to learn more about the organization and get a feel for quiz bowl at the collegiate level.

Results for Spring 2009 Tournaments

Oklahoma Academic Team participated in four tournaments in the spring 2009 semester after attending the 2009 NAQT Southwest SCT.

February 28, 2009: ACF Regionals 2009 Southwest

The University of Tulsa Academic Bowl Team hosted ACF Regionals in the southwest region for the third consecutive year, and Oklahoma Academic Team sent two teams to the tournament. After a double round-robin, Missouri State was declared the winner because it had won at least two more games than the second-place team.

Oklahoma A (David Gagne, Ryan Grabowski, Matthew King, and Brian Morrow) earned second place with a 7-3 record. Brian finished fifth in the individual standings with 34 points per game. Oklahoma B (Robert Hayes, Maggie Larkin, Daniel Page, and Matt Rainwater) placed fifth with a 2-8 record.

March 1, 2009: GARBAGE Southwest

Tulsa also hosted GARBAGE, a pop culture tournament paired with ACF Regionals. Oklahoma Academic Team also sent two teams to this tournament. After a triple round-robin, Alcoholics Synonymous, Tulsa’s perennial trash team, won the tournament.

Oklahoma A (Cliff Marroquin, Daniel Page, Matt Rainwater, and Cliff’s friend Katie) earned second place with a 4-5 record. Oklahoma B (Ryan Grabowski, Maggie Larkin, Brian Morrow, and Sarah Yost) earned fourth place with a 3-6 record.

April 3-4, 2009: NAQT Intercollegiate Championship Tournament

The NAQT Intercollegiate Championship Tournament was held on April 3-4 at the Hyatt Regency DFW. Oklahoma Academic Team qualified for Division I of the tournament through the waiting list, marking the second consecutive time that OAT has qualified in such a fashion. Ryan Grabowski, Matthew King, Brian Morrow, and Donovan Wood attended this tournament and earned 24th place with a 2-11 record.

The team finished higher than the record would indicate because it placed into the third bracket, in which teams will finish from 17th to 24th place. Nevertheless, Oklahoma Academic Team achieved a team goal of finishing better than last place with its performance in the tournament.

April 18-19, 2009: TRASHionals 12

TRASHionals 12 was held on April 18-19 at the University of Pennsylvania. Liga de Justicia, consisting of Cliff Marroquin, Daniel Page, and Matt Rainwater, earned a berth at the tournament through qualifying at TRASH Regionals Southwest. Because of the lack of statistics, Liga de Justicia’s final place has not been determined.

Oklahoma Academic Team has concluded its 2008-2009 season and looks forward to another year of quiz bowl competition.

No Bid for 2009 NAQT ICT

NAQT has released its list of bids for the 2009 NAQT Intercollegiate Championship Tournament, and Oklahoma Academic Team did not earn an at-large bid in either Division I or Division II. Moreover, none of the three teams in attendance at the Southwest SCT on February 7 made the first five places on the waiting list.

NAQT ICT is scheduled for April 3-4 at Hyatt Regency DFW in Dallas, Texas. More information on the NAQT ICT is available at http://www.naqt.com/ict/2009/details.html.

Oklahoma Receives Bid to TRASHionals 12

Liga de Justicia (Cliff Marroquin, Daniel Page, Matthew Rainwater, and Chris Terrill), who finished third at TRASH Regionals at the University of Tulsa, has received a bid to compete in TRASHionals 12: The Dirty Dozen. Other teams participating in that tournament that received a bid include Insert Bill O’Reilly Joke Here, which featured OAT alumni David and Lori Murphy, and Alcoholics Synonymous (Tulsa).

Congratulations to Cliff, Chris, Daniel, and Matt for qualifying. They will compete at the University of Pennsylvania on April 18-19.

2009 NAQT Southwest SCT Results

Oklahoma Academic Team sent three teams, two in Division I and one in Division II, to the NAQT Southwest Sectional Championship Tournament held at the University of Texas at Austin on Saturday, February 7. Because only seven teams attended, the divisions were combined and played on Division I questions. Texas A won the tournament.

In Division I, Oklahoma A, consisting of Ryan Grabowski, Matthew King, and Brian Morrow, earned second place with an 11-3 record, with all three of its losses coming to eventual champion Texas A. Oklahoma A and Texas A played an advantaged final to determine the champion after the conclusion of the round robin. Oklahoma A won the first game, but Texas A won the second to claim the tournament championship. Oklahoma B, consisting of David Gagne, Ted Swang, Chris Terrill, and Donovan Wood, earned third place with an 8-4 record.

In Division II, Oklahoma C (Robert Hayes, Maggie Larkin, and Cliff Marroquin) finished in sixth place with a 2-10 record.

OAT had several members place in the top ten in the individual standings. Brian came in second place with 37.27 points per 20 tossups heard (the metric that NAQT uses instead of points per game), David came in third with 34.47, Ryan was in sixth place with 32.73, Robert was in seventh with 30.17, and Matthew was in tenth with 23.64.

Full standings are available here. Because of the teams' performances, it is unlikely that any team will receive a bid to compete in the 2009 NAQT Intercollegiate Championship Tournament at the Hyatt Regency DFW.

The next tournament for OAT will be ACF Regionals 2009 at the University of Tulsa on Saturday, February 28.

New Date for Route 66 Classic 14

Earlier this school year, Oklahoma Academic Team was scheduled to host Route 66 Classic 14, a mirror of Early Fall Tournament 3 at Brown; however, the tournament was postponed because of a lack of interest.

Today, Oklahoma Academic Team has announced a new date for Route 66 Classic 14: Sunday, March 8, 2009. The question set will be the 2009 Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament set, a novice-level set on par with ACF Fall. Note that the tournament is not on the preceding Saturday, March 7, because that is the date for the NAQT Oklahoma State Championship, hosted at Oklahoma State University.

Here are the results from four tournaments in which Oklahoma Academic Team participated in the fall 2008 semester.

November 8, 2008: ACF Fall 2008 Southwest

Oklahoma Academic Team hosted ACF Fall 2008 Southwest on Saturday, November 8. Only five teams participated in the tournament: one was from the Liberal Arts and Science Academy in Austin, Texas, another was from Langston, and the remaining three were house teams. After playing a double round-robin, LASA won the tournament with a perfect 8-0 record.

The top five players in individual statistics were as follows: Robert Hayes (Oklahoma B) was first with 51.88 points per game, followed by Ryan Grabowski (Oklahoma A) with 50 PPG. Benji Nguyen (LASA) came in third with 38.12 PPG, Donovan Wood (Oklahoma C) was fourth with 31.88 PPG, and Matthew Rainwater (Oklahoma C) was fifth with 31.25 PPG.

November 15, 2008: Golden Hurricane Open 4

On Saturday, November 15, Oklahoma Academic Team sent two teams to Golden Hurricane Open 4, a mirror of Illinois Open 2008, at the University of Tulsa. After playing a single round-robin, all the teams were placed into three separate single-elimination brackets. Missouri State won the tournament.

Oklahoma A (Robert Hayes, Matthew King, and Brian Morrow) earned second place with a 9-2 record. Its only two losses came to champion Missouri State. Brian was third in the individual standings with 34.55 points per game. Oklahoma B (David Gagne, Matt Rainwater, Ted Swang, and Chris Terrill) earned fifth place with a 4-5 record.

November 16, 2008: TRASH Regionals 2008 Southwest

On Sunday, November 16, Oklahoma Academic Team sent two teams to compete in TRASH Regionals 2008 Southwest at the University of Tulsa. The teams competed in a single round-robin with eleven games.

Insert Bill O’Reilly Joke Here, featuring OAT alumni David and Lori Murphy, won the tournament with a perfect 11-0 record and earned the automatic bid to TRASHionals 12: The Dirty Dozen.

Liga de Justicia (Cliff Marroquin, Daniel Page, Matt Rainwater, and Chris Terrill) finished in third place with an 8-2 record. Oklahoma Gladiators (Ryan Grabowski, Robert Hayes, Donovan Wood, and Sarah Yost) finished in fourth place with a 7-3 record.

Liga de Justicia has earned an at-large bid to compete in TRASHionals 12 on April 18-19.

December 6, 2008: Boren Cup 25

Oklahoma Academic Team hosted the latest iteration of the Boren Cup high school academic tournament series, Boren Cup 25, on Saturday, December 6. Seven teams attended and played on an NAQT Invitational Series packet. After playing a single round-robin, the top four teams were placed into a single-elimination bracket. The A team from Parkview Arts and Sciences Magnet High School, located in Little Rock, Arkansas, won the tournament with an 8-1 record. That team, along with Sapulpa High School, qualified for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, to be held at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare Hotel in Chicago on May 29-31, 2009.

Status of Route 66 Classic 14

Oklahoma Academic Team has postponed Route 66 because of a lack of sufficient interest for its original date, October 4. Tentative plans are under way to move the tournament to October 25. Right now, the organization does not know if it still will be able to secure the rights to use Early Fall Tournament 3. See the post entitled “New Date for Route 66 Classic 14”, posted on February 11, 2009, for more information.

Upcoming Events for Fall 2008

Oklahoma Academic Team would like to announce its tournament calendar for Fall 2008.

OAT will begin the season by hosting Route 66 Classic 14 on Saturday, October 4. OAT will continue its partnership with Brown University and host a mirror of the third version of the Early Fall Tournament, a novice-level tournament. This will also be the first collegiate tournament for the new members of OAT.

OAT will take a long break before hosting ACF Fall 2008 Southwest on Saturday, November 8. Like EFT, it is a novice-level tournament; however, this one requires packet submission. This will be the first ACF tournament that OAT has hosted since ACF Regionals 2002.

Tulsa will then host two tournaments on November 15 and 16. On Saturday, November 15, Tulsa will host Golden Hurricane Open 4, a mirror of Illinois Open, a tournament of above-average difficulty. On Sunday, November 16, Tulsa will host TRASH Regionals, the qualifying event for TRASHionals 12 and the first pop culture tournament of the season. Neither tournament requires packet submission because Illinois and TRASH are supplying the respective question sets.

OAT will then conclude the semester by hosting Boren Cup 25, part of its biannual high school tournament series, on December 6.

Recruitment Night 2008

This year, Oklahoma Academic Team reduced its traditional Recruitment Week to one night, Tuesday, September 2. The night was still successful for team recruitment because twelve people attended the meeting to experience collegiate quiz bowl for the first time. Since then, six more people have attended meetings, which has brought our total of prospective members to eighteen.

Oklahoma Academic Team would like to thank all the prospective members who attended a meeting this semester for their interest in our organization.

Results of Late Spring 2008 Tournaments

It's time to update the old blog again. Here are results from five tournaments in which OAT participated at the end of the spring 2008 semester.

First, OAT sent a team, consisting of Sydney Ashby, Robert Hayes, Matthew King, and Brian Morrow to Tulsa Open Academic Spring Tournament 2, a mirror of the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament, at the University of Tulsa on March 29. After finishing with a 9-1 record, OAT won! Brian also finished in fourth place in individual competition with 50 points per game, and Matt was fifth with 34 PPG. Afterward, OAT remained in Tulsa on March 30 to participate in a mirror of the RC Cola Classic, a trash tournament at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Only four teams competed: one from Tulsa, another from Oklahoma State, and two from Oklahoma. The Underdogs (David Gagne, Robert Hayes, Matthew King, and Brian Morrow) tied for first with Tulsa with a 5-3 record but lost in a rather unorthodox tiebreaker: a match of rock-paper-scissors. The Exiles on Main Street (Sydney Ashby, Cliff Marroquin, Daniel Page, and Ted Swang) tied for third place with a 3-5 record. Later, OAT was able to send a Division I team, consisting of David, Matthew, and Brian, to the NAQT Intercollegiate Championship Tournament at Washington University at St. Louis on April 11-12. Unfortunately, OAT finished thirty-first out of thirty-one teams in Division I. However, all three team members finished in the middle tier in individual statistics. One week later, Robert, Matthew, and Brian represented OAT at Rollapalooza 9, one of the last collegiate tournaments to use the NAQT Invitational Series, at Missouri University of Science and Technology on April 19. OAT finished sixth out of seven teams. Brian was the fifth-best individual scorer with 37.92 PPG. Results are available at http://web.mst.edu/~cbowl/hosting/0708/rollapalooza08_standings.html.

Finally, OAT hosted Boren Cup 24 on April 26. Eight high school teams competed, and Edmond Santa Fe A won the round robin and the playoffs. Results for the round robin are at http://www.ou.edu/student/okacf/results/bc24_standings.html.

OAT looks forward to another great year of competition in the 2008-2009 season, which begins with hosting Route 66 Classic 14, a mirror of Early Fall Tournament 3 at Brown, on October 4.

Boren Cup 24 Postponed

Oklahoma Academic Team originally decided to host Boren Cup 24 on March 1. Because of a lack of initial interest, the team has decided to postpone it to April 26.

The next tournament that OAT will attend is Tulsa Open Academic Spring Tournament 2 at the University of Tulsa on Saturday, March 29. It will be a mirror of the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament. On Sunday, March 30, Tulsa will also host a mirror of the RC Cola Classic, a trash tournament held at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Oklahoma Now on Waiting List

The Division I team (Sydney Ashby, David Gagne, Matthew King, Brian Morrow, and Chris Terrill) that Oklahoma Academic Team sent to the NAQT Southwest SCT is now on the waiting list for qualifying for the NAQT Intercollegiate Championship Tournament at Washington University at St. Louis. Based on this information, Oklahoma was the 39th best team overall in Division I.

Update: As of March 6, the ICT now has 32 registered teams. Although Oklahoma has moved up to second on the waiting list, it will not receive an invitation to the ICT.

ACF Regionals 2008 Results

Oklahoma Academic Team sent two teams to compete in ACF Regionals, held at the University of Tulsa on Saturday, February 16. After a double round robin, Texas claimed the championship with a 10-0 record.

Oklahoma A (Robert Hayes, Matthew King, Brian Morrow, and Chris Terrill) finished in second place with a 7-3 record, and Oklahoma B (David Gagne, Daniel Page, and Ted Swang) finished in fifth place with a 3-7 record. The top five scorers were Matt Nance (Texas), Brian Morrow (Oklahoma A), Nathaniel Russell (Tulsa), David Gagne (Oklahoma B), and Colin Brown (Oklahoma State A). The next tournament for the Oklahoma Academic Team will be Boren Cup 24, part of the team's high school tournament series, on March 1 at the University of Oklahoma.

2008 NAQT Southwest SCT Results

Oklahoma Academic Team sent two teams, one each in Division I and Division II, to the NAQT Southwest Sectional Championship Tournament held at the University of Tulsa on Saturday, February 9. Harding won Division I, and Truman State A won Division II.

Our team in Division I (Sydney Ashby, David Gagne, Matthew King, Brian Morrow, and Chris Terrill) finished in second place with a 7-5 record after completing a quadruple round robin. The team had only three opponents: a team from Harding and two teams from Oklahoma State. Brian was the second-highest scorer with 36.36 points per game, Matthew was third-highest with 30.42 PPG, and David was sixth-highest with 22.92 PPG.

In Division II, our team (Robert Hayes, Cliff Marroquin, and Sarah Yost) won the middle bracket, thereby earning fifth place, and compiled an 8-5 record. Robert was the third-highest scorer with 53.46 points per game.

Sword Bowl 2008 Mirror Canceled

Oklahoma Academic Team has decided to cancel its mirror of Sword Bowl 2008 because of a lack of interest.

The next contest that OAT will attend is the NAQT South Sectional Championship Tournament at the University of Tulsa on February 9.

Oklahoma Academic Team has several events scheduled for the Spring 2008 semester.

First, OAT will host Sword Bowl, a mirror of the same tournament at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, on February 2. Sword Bowl is intended to be a novice tournament, but all are welcome to attend.

OAT will then travel to Tulsa for the NAQT Southwest Sectional Championship Tournament on February 9. OAT will attempt to qualify a team for the NAQT Intercollegiate Championship Tournament for the third consecutive year. OAT has sent two Division II teams to NAQT ICT in the past two SCTs.

On February 16, OAT will return to Tulsa for ACF Regionals. Matt Weiner, the head editor, has promised a significant drop in difficulty for this tournament, which should make it more appealing for players apprehensive of ACF.

Boren Cup 24, part of the team's high school tournament series, is scheduled for March 1. It will use the same questions as the Dennis Haskins Open at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Finally, OAT will make a third trip to Tulsa for Tulsa Open Academic Spring Tournament 2, a mirror of the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament, on March 29.

National tournaments are scheduled for April. TRASHionals is at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga from April 4-6. The NAQT ICT is at Washington University at St. Louis from April 11-12. ACF Nationals is at Brandeis University on April 26. At this point, it is unknown if OAT will attend any of these.
