There was a coyote sighting at the end of Leipzig this morning, Wednesday February 22nd. I don’t have all the details as to how many, but it was more than one I believe. Please be advised that if you have cats or small dogs IT IS NOT SAFE to leave them out by themselves.

This sighting was in the early morning (around 7:30) so they are not just out at night.

I would advise neighbors not leave pets tied out where they will have no defense and cannot run from any aggressive animals.

Retail development firm Crosland Southeast has begun work on the $6 million redevelopment of Quail Corners in south Charlotte.

Crosland Southeast will first reconfigure the interior parking lot at the 113,000-square-foot center, at the intersection of Park Road and Sharon Road West.

In the spring, work will begin on a Harris Teeter vestibule expansion and the refacing of all the storefront exteriors with a combination of brick masonry and stucco.

An open-air plaza for outdoor dining and weekend entertainment also will be created, and several spaces will be reconfigured. The project, which will add 10,000 square feet to the center, is expected to be completed by fall 2012.

Crosland, which owns the retail center through an affiliate company, won city approval for the redevelopment in April after a contentious rezoning process. Some neighborhood residents opposed the addition of a fast-food restaurant with a drive-through window at the property. While the city staff acknowledged that is inconsistent with the South District plan, City Council approved the rezoning petition.

At the end of the year, Salsarita’s will relocate from its outparcel location to a storefront in the center, making way for the new fast-food restaurant at the intersection of Park Road and Hamlin Park Drive. Peter Pappas, a partner at Crosland Southeast, declines to name the restaurant operator in line to join Quail Corners, but real estate sources say McDonald’s Corp. is the likely new tenant. The architect on the project is BB+M Architecture, and the general contractor is Myers & Chapman.

At the recent community meeting concerning the presence of coyotes in our area, CMPD, Department of Wildlife and Animal Control were represented. During the meeting these representatives informed the group about coyotes and answered questions and concerns about sightings and attacks that have occurred in and around the Park Road Carmel Road area.

The information we received is bullet pointed below:

Coyotes are not native to North Carolina, but have been brought in illegally for hunting or as exotic pets.

Coyotes are generally 30 to 34 pounds and are not naturally aggressive. They will not seek out children or adults and in most cases are shy and easily scared away…

They have actually been in this area for years but because they do not have natural predators and cannot be hunted within the city limits, their numbers have grown.

They are opportunistic animals and if hungry, will take advantage of small pets left outside.

It is rare that a coyote will contract rabies, but it can happen if they have come into contact with a rabid raccoon or opossum.

If you see a coyote and it does not appear rabid or is not posing an immediate threat to you or your children and pets it by law, must be left alone. (Like other wildlife we see..deer, foxes, raccoons etc.)

If you feel the coyote you see is rabid or has attacked your pets you can call 911 and inform animal control and the police.
