Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi (7 June 1942), commonly known as Muammar Gaddafi or Colonel Gaddafi, is or was the former autocratic ruler of Libya, from 1969 when he seized power in a military coup, until 2011 when his government was overthrown by a NATO-backed rebel force in a civil war. His 41-year rule prior to the uprising made him the fourth longest-ruling non-royal leader since 1900, as well as the longest-ruling Arab leader. He has variously styled himself as 'the Brother Leader', 'Guide of the Revolution', and the 'King of Kings'. On 20 October 2011, the media reported that a National Transitional Council official had told Al Jazeera that Gaddafi had been captured. According to Abdel Majid, Gaddafi's legs were both wounded. Gaddafi reportedly died of wounds suffered during capture.

On 18 October 2011, near the Muskingum County Animal Farm preserve in Zanesville, Ohio, owner Terry Thompson was said to have set his 56 exotic animals free before committing suicide. Of the 56 exotic animals, 49 were killed by the local police. The animals freed included lions, leopards, wolves, primates, bears, and 18 Bengal tigers. The animals confirmed to be dead are the 18 Bengal tigers, six black bears, two grizzlies, two wolves and 17 lions. Three leopards, one grizzly bear and two monkeys were captured and sent to the Columbus Zoo.

A Michigan high school basketball player who died shortly after making a game-winning shot had an enlarged heart. The Ottawa County medical examiner says 16-year-old Wes Leonard suffered cardiac arrest because of the condition. An autopsy was conducted Friday. The teenager from Fennville High School was pronounced dead Thursday evening at a hospital in Holland. He scored the game-winning layup at the end of a perfect season for the small town near Lake Michigan. Leonard collapsed during a post-game celebration.

The spokesman for a U.S. burger joint that has the catchphrase "taste worth dying for" has died. Blair River, the 29-year-old, 575-pound pitchman for Heart Attack Grill, died Tuesday, the restaurant's owner, Jon Basso, told QMI Agency. Basso said River died from complications due to pneumonia.
