On Labor Day (today) of 2006 I sat down with the inention of composing, editing, recording and publishing a short story about the relationship love and heartbreak.

There were two other goals that I had in mind for this peice.
First: I wanted it to be the first peice composed without employinig any Microsoft products at all. Except for the hour or so I spent editing on my laptop in the livingroom (WinXP), I accomplished that goal, too. This post and the story were written on Writely via Firefox. The recording and publishing will be done in Audacity via Ubuntu.
Second: I wanted to encorporate some recordings from the Dondero High School A Capella Choir from Comfort Stand Recordings. I’m not sure why. Oak Park Michigan, here’s your due.

Not a goal, but definately a bonus: Around the eight-minute mark I hit a new high for the per-capita use of the F-bomb.

I wrote this when I was horribly, horribly depressed. I was working full time at a tech writer’s job and used my daytime hours to craft this story about dysfunctional relationships. I wanted to write a story about how depressed people have this way of blaming everything but themselves for their self-serving attitude. I wanted to write a story about how sometimes depression makes us take bold stands on things we don’t belive in, just becuase we’re so excited to have the gumption to tkae a bold stand at all. I didn’t know that at the time. I can only see it now. After years and years of therapy.

Music Credits: Intro and music beds are liscenced from the magical, magnificent Magnatune.com, who provides Indiginus’ “Superstring” from the album “Seismic” under a Creative-Commons-no-commercial-attribution-share- and-share-alike-2.5 license, which, coincidentally, are the same terms of this recording. So, remix away, soul brotha.

Also: From the CCmixter project: The Bill Berry mix of the Brad Sucks tune “Time to take out the trash.”

Following is the third and final installment of my short story “Origins of Shame.” Call this one “Hero is as Hero Does.”

“Origins of Shame” was always supposed to be a story about depression, although I didn’t know it when I wrote the first part of the story. Originally, the third part was a third-person telling of Gordy catching a burglar, but bungling it and falling off the roof and screwing up an undercover investigation.
Also, watch for the names of some of the other famous characters who went to the same college as Gordy. Cameos! Of people you’ve never heard of! Fun!
Music Credits: You hear C. Lane’s Patemikin Villages: An album, licensed like this podcast, under a creative commons attribution 2.5 license. You heard “Talk Slow” and “I never got the Syllabus.” Both songs can be purchased from Magnatune.com, who insists that they are not evil.

<itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:subtitle>Origins of Shame (Part 3) Following is the third and final installment of my short story “Origins of Shame.” Call this one “Hero is as Hero Does.” “Origins of Shame” was always supposed to be a story about depression, although I didn’t know it when I wrot</itunes:subtitle><itunes:author>Obsidian River</itunes:author><itunes:summary>Origins of Shame (Part 3) Following is the third and final installment of my short story “Origins of Shame.” Call this one “Hero is as Hero Does.” “Origins of Shame” was always supposed to be a story about depression, although I didn’t know it when I wrote the first part of the story. With Great Ability… (Origns of Shame, Part 2)
The Trials and tribulations of our good friend Gordon McPharphenstien (AKA the Green Globster) continue with the second part of the “origins of shame podcast.” I call this one “With Great Ability…” in a wink to the famous Spiderman quote, “with great power comes great responsibility.” In the previous podcast Gordy gives us a rundown of his first 15 minutes of fame, telling us about his experience as a puppet artist for a local public television station.

In this installment, Gordy gets in-depth about his “powers,” which, as he puts it, allow him to excrete a yellow goo from any hole in his body.” Eew. Although this is part 2 of a 3 part podcast, the parts stand alone. You don’t need to be familiar with the trappings of part one to enjoy part two, but, like a Reese’s PeanutButter cup, two great tastes taste great together, right?

In other news, Dark Mallard, my new short story is in the workshop right now. It’s the first story I’ve ever written with the full intent of putting it up here for you, but first I’m going to send it out to a couple of quick markets and see what interest there is in Northwoods baby ducky zombie stories.

It's a coming of middle-age story about a superhero who I created in partnership with the good Tryke Kemnitz, who I'm sure won't mind me sharing some of these stories with you. The world that Tryke and I created involved a Midwestern branch of the Justice League, which was really a training ground/high school for "Metropolitan" heros-proper. Tryke has the rejection letters from DC somewhere. If the story sounds familiar, Your thinking of Disney's "Sky High". A lot of that movie was pretty much exactly what Tryke and I created 15 years prior. That happens sometimes. It happened to tyke and I often. Keith Geffen, I'm looking at you.

Anyway, sometime later, like almost 15 years later, I sat down with the task in mind of recreating our favorite hero from that JL Midwest Mythos. That's this piece.
