Ocean City Republicans hear about road and bridge projects

OCEAN CITY — A yearlong project to resurface and improve drainage on Bay Avenue will wrap up after Easter, and a restriping project to create bicycle lanes on West Avenue in the south end will start in May, according to county engineer Dale Foster.

Foster presented a briefing on county-related infrastructure projects during the Ocean City Republican Club meeting Tuesday, March 24 at the library.

Flashing lights approved for certain intersections

Council unanimously approved an ordinance that allows seasonal flash mode for traffic signals at the intersections of 18th Street and Wesley Avenue and 34th Street and Central Avenue.

$8.3M bond ordinance to pay for capital projects

OCEAN CITY — Council unanimously approved an $8.293 million bond ordinance that will pay for a variety of capital projects when it met Thursday, March 26.

Haven Ave. flood mitigation study moves forward

OCEAN CITY — After a two-week delay, a flood mitigation study for the area around 29th Street and Haven Avenue was approved by council when it met Thursday, March 26.

After being tabled at its last meeting, council awarded a $44,720 professional services contract to Michael Baker Engineering of Hamilton (Mercer County) to study and come up with a flood mitigation plan for the area between 26th and 34th streets, from West to Bay avenues.

Ocean City Council introduces $73M budget with slight tax increase

OCEAN CITY — City Council unanimously introduced a $73.1 million budget for 2015 Thursday, March 26 that includes an increase in the tax rate of just less than one cent, slightly more than the mayor’s original proposal.

The total local purpose tax levy is $46.275 million, up $1.482 million over 2014. If approved, the local tax rate will be 40.96 cents per $100 of assessed value, up from 40.1 cents in 2014. This is a .865-cent tax rate increase, up from the .528-cent increase proposed by Mayor Jay Gillian in February.

Ocean City southend beach fill to start mid-April

OCEAN CITY — The long-awaited southend beach replenishment project is expected to begin a half of a month earlier than expected, city administrator Jim Mallon announced at Thursday’s City Council meeting.

During administration reports at the March 26 meeting, Mallon said that the contractor, Great Lakes Dredge Company of Illinois, had already dropped pipe for the dredging at 43rd Street.

Book of Golden Deeds nominations sought

The Exchange Club of Ocean City is seeking nominations for the recipient of the 50th annual Book of Golden Deeds.

Past recipient and event chairman Bill Woods said this year’s event will take place April 27. Nominations for the city’s tireless volunteers, health and welfare organizations, civic planners, youth leaders and philanthropists are due no later than March 30.

Lineup announced for Boardwalk Concert Series, tickets on sale

OCEAN CITY — The lineup for the 2015 Boardwalk Concert Series at the Ocean City Music Pier has been announced.

On Monday, June 22 will be Lucinda Williams; June 29 will be Robby Kreiger of The Doors; July 6 will be Get The Led Out; July 13 will be The Machine; July 20 Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue; and July 27 Dave Mason’s Traffic Jam.

Buzzworthy benefit

OCEAN CITY — Deanna Curran and her co-workers at Divine Images Salon inside The Flanders are hoping their community will join them for a good cause. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 9, the salon will host a St. Baldrick’s fundraiser, where participants raise money for childhood cancer research by shaving their head.

Curran, an esthetician from Upper Township, said she was inspired to host the fundraiser when she watched the journey of Egg Harbor Township resident Alexis Corey.

Seven vie for title of Mr. Mature America

OCEAN CITY — Seven contestants will compete for the title of the best mature man in America as Ocean City hosts the second annual Mr. Mature America Pageant 7 p.m. Saturday, March 28 at the Ocean City Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace.

With the theme of “Memories,” contestants are George Ellis, 84, of Penn Valley and Ocean City; Tom Greeley, 66, of Manchester; Gary Sakas, 65, of Haddon Heights and Ocean City; Rene Sese, 73, of Ocean City; Joel S. Fogel, 70, of Somers Point; Kenneth Young, 76, of New York City; and William Paul Cage.
