A recent article from Spiegel talks about a new subculture which they apply the term “stoneage subculture”. The practitioners of this subculture eat lots of meat, bathe in icy water and run around barefoot. In an attempt to make their lives healthier, they try to mimic the lifestyles of their ancestors.

John Durant greets the hunter-gatherers of New York once a month in his apartment on the Upper East Side. They eat homemade beef jerky, huddle around the hearth and swap recipes for carpaccio with vegetables or roasted wild boar. Often enough, the host will deliberately skip a few meals the next day. After all, didn’t his earliest ancestors starve a little between hunts? Instead of eating, Durant prefers to run barefoot across Brooklyn Bridge. In the winter, he takes part in the Coney Island Polar Bear swim in the icy Atlantic.

26-year-old John Durant and others promote “Evolutionary Fitness”. They call themselves “hunter-gatherers” or “paleos”. Their philosophy is based on the idea that the human body is best suited to the lifestyle of the people who roamed the Earth tens of thousands of years ago. Durant is starting a new site called Hunter Gatherer. You can currently follow him on Twitter.

The diet of the paleos is full of meat. To exercise, they practice climbing, sprinting and leaping.

Human genes are perfect for a nomadic existence; for the life of a hunter-gatherer attuned to the rhythm of the seasons. “Prehistoric life was a very long camping trip with no camp stove or energy bars to get us through,” says Arthur De Vany. “We’re not trying to idealize Stone Age Man,” he says. However, he does think that evolution allows us to make some inferences about how we could lead healthier, happier lives. De Vany and his wife Carmela live in a small settlement called Washington in the Utah desert.

Arthur De Vany’s website can be found here. De Vany’s body is like that of an athletic 45-year-old, despite the fact that he is 72 years old. At 210 pounds, he has just 8% body fat. Not a fan of jogging, he believes in short but intense physical activity.

Followers of Evolutionary Fitness shun potatoes, chocolate, pizza and bread as well as milk, cheese and refined oils. Instead, they eat game and fish, vegetables, seeds, and fruit. “We try to only eat what was around before the invention of agriculture,” De Vany says.

There may be evidence to back up their assertion that EF is a healthier lifestyle:

Lynda Frassetto, a doctor at the University of California in San Fransisco, conducted an experiment in which she put healthy subjects on a paleo diet for just 10 days, feeding them nothing but lean meat, fruit, vegetables and nuts. Everything else was strictly forbidden. Lo and behold, the subjects’ blood pressure improved and their insulin levels sank. American researcher Loren Cordain also calls for more “species-appropriate nutrition”. He says the “average Stone Age diet” comprised of anywhere between 60 and 80 percent fat and protein. Cordain claims today’s carbohydrate-rich diets don’t match our genetic makeup and are the reason for developed-country diseases like diabetes and high blood-pressure.

Other paleos include Richard Nikoley in San Jose, California (his web site is called Free the Animal), who runs an outdoors fitness club. His courses involve things like “crawling on all fours through the undergrowth, playing knock-down with stones the size of bowling balls, and running half-naked through the jungle.”

Constance McMillen

A memo to students of Itawamba County Agricultural High School included rules for the upcoming prom, which stated that couples to attend the prom must be of opposite sex. Student Constance McMillen, a lesbian who wanted to take her partner and wear a tuxedo, fought against the school board with the help of the ACLU, saying that the restriction violated students’ rights and violated McMillen’s rights of expression by not allowing her to wear a tux to the dance.

So the board, located in the small town of Itawamba, Mississippi, took its ball and went home. In other words, they cancelled the whole prom. McMillen almost didn’t return to school for fear of retribution by her classmates who had just lost their prom because of her.

Pensacola, Florida is not a town that people really think about visiting when they come down south. That’s because there isn’t much going on there. (Although, we do enjoy the National Museum of Naval Aviation, which is really cool and you should check it out if you can).

A little over 10 miles north of the museum, on FL-295 and then up Interstate-110, you’ll find the campus of Pensacola Christian College, a fundamentalist Christian Baptist institution – hey, if you’re going to dedicate your life completely to Jesus and reject every other political or religious philosophy but fundamentalism then you might as well enjoy the sun.

Dr. Arlin Horton and his wife Beka moved to Pensacola and founded the Pensacola Christian School in 1954. 20 years later, they opened the Pensacola Christian College (unaccredited) to further their vision of “Education from a Christian Perspective.” The school has an in-house publisher which provides a K-12 curriculum. (it’s one of the largest Christian textbook publishers in the USA). Thousands of delegates attend clinics and seminars sponsored by PCC every year.

All students seeking a degree are required to complete Bible study including courses named “New Testament Survey” and “Old Testament Survey”. PCC teaches young Earth creationism and flood geology. (ie: that God created the earth in literally six days). Archeology is taught using a Biblical timeline. This probably means that Adam and Eve rode dinosaurs. The Textus Receptus is considered the “superior Greek text” of the Bible; using this as a basis, the King James version is accepted.

PCC rejects Calvinism, Modernism, Neo-orthodoxy, Pentecostal, and the charismatic movement. They reject liberals. That’s liberal theology, not “liberal” in the political sense. Don’t even ask what they think of liberals in the political sense. If a liberal accidentally wandered on campus the police might be called. If an atheist wandered on campus they would probably be burned at the stake.

To say that PCC’s policies are strict is an understatement. In the blog Restless Wanderings, portions of the 2001 student handbook, which is apparently well-guarded and difficult to obtain by any infidels, include the following rules:

• Banned music: Current popular music, Jazz, rock, rap, folk, “Nashville” type, or new age, Religious music performed in the folk, western rock, or gospel rock style, “Soundtracks from movies rated PG-13, PG, or below”
• Pensacola’s 89.5 Rejoice Radio is recommended
• No internet
• “PCC reserves the right to check the computer files on any personal computer on campus if, in the opinion of the Administration, it is reported or suspected that said files or related medium may be in violation of the policies and standards of the College.”
• “For their safety and well-being, women going to [Fort Pickens] beach must be in groups of at least five and must stay together as a group. Each group must be accompanied by a junior or senior chaperone who is an APL or PL and has been a student at least two years at the College. Women are to turn right after the toll bridge and drive west toward Fort Pickens to go to the beach.They may never drive east toward Navarre. Men going to the beach must be in groups of at least three.Men are to bear left after the toll bridge and drive east no more than five miles past the residential area to the open beach space between Pensacola Beach and Navarre. They may never drive west toward Fort Pickens.
• “For safety reasons we ask our women students not to go to the County Market/Brent Oaks Shopping Center after dark.During daylight hours, women students may go to this shopping area by walking down Brent Lane and over the overpass.Women students are never permitted to walk down the dirt road by the railroad tracks, nor are they permitted to go down Sycamore and cross the tracks under the overpass when going to the County Market shopping center.”
• Circle K stores and the Boardwalk Mall on Santa Rosa Island are off limits to all students.The Chimneys and Bluffs areas along Scenic Highway are off limits at all times…
• No “charismatic activities”
• No Hyper-Calvinism
• No dancing, no gambling (including the lottery), no renting or watching movies, no card playing, no alcohol or tobacco, no profanity or obscenity, no pornography, no premarital sex, no homosexuality, no “other sex perversions”
• No fleshly magazines and books, no games that are of the occult, no games with graphic violence or nudity
• No symbols, pictures, writing, flags, banners, slogans or any “divisive activism”
• Couples are not permitted to be alone in classrooms or other areas of any building or unchaperoned.
• No physical contact between members of the opposite sex.
• Students should never go to the beach as couples, be at a park after dark, or visit in the home of unmarried members of the opposite sex.”
• Men shall cut their hair so it does not come over the ears, eyebrows, or collar. Sideburns should be no longer than the middle of the ear. “Styles related to counterculture…are not acceptable.” No beards or mustaches. Socks always.
• Women’s Dress and skirt lengths and slits should come no higher than the top of the kneecap when sitting and standing. No sundresses or spaghetti straps. “Anything immodest, tight, formfitting, scant, backless, and low in the neckline is unacceptable.” No pants or shorts. ” Young ladies should dress in a manner that others will focus on the face and particularly the eyes, for some say, the eyes are the mirror of the soul”

The Demerit system is complex and throrough. 1 to 3 demerits for tardiness, littering, improper dress, chewing gum, etc… That’s grade school stuff. But you could get 10 demerits for “horseplay” or “bad attitude”, 25 demerits for “borrowing automobile” or going off campus without a pass. “Improper social behavior” gets 50 demerits. 75 to 100 demerits for cheating, unauthorized possession of firearms, possesion of tobacco, going to the movies (!), watching porn. You’ll earn 150 demerits for meeting the opposite sex off campus or having alcohol, sexual misconduct, “immorality”, “Involvement with witchcraft, séances, or any other satanic or demonic activity” or gambling (Accumulation of 150 demerits gets you expelled)

The “Optical intercourse” Incident

One student told of how a group of men and a group of women from the college happened to meet at a McDonald’s last spring. Both groups were returning from the beach (they had gone to separate beaches; men and women are not allowed to be at the beach together). The administration found out, and all 15 students were expelled.

Even couples who are not talking or touching can be reprimanded. Sabrina Poirier, a student at Pensacola who withdrew in 1997, was disciplined for what is known on the campus as “optical intercourse” — staring too intently into the eyes of a member of the opposite sex. This is also referred to as “making eye babies.” While the rule does not appear in written form, most students interviewed for this article were familiar with the concept.

Check out the following clip which comes from an informational VHS, containing facts about PCC. After the short introduction, there is a seminar/sermon given by the VP for Administration Dr. Greg Mutsch, who comes right out and says that they are fundamentalist and that they don’t like anybody else and that they preach a doctrine of separation from all infidels (yes, he actually uses the word “infidel” in his speech). He blasts the “New Evangelicals” and their attempts to try to accommodate those who don’t believe stuff like God literally created everything in 6 days only a few thousand years ago. Those people also have the indecency to listen to Christian rock and Christian rap music. Sacrilegious. Also have a chuckle when he refers to Mormonism as a cult. He’s got spirit though – and he kinda sounds like Casey Kasem.

You may be a bit confused about all these disciplines that Mutsch refers to. First off, remember that when he says “liberals” he doesn’t mean Michael Moore; he’s talking about Liberal Christianity, which keeps a more open mind in regards to Biblical interpretation. Peter Ruckman is a Baptist pastor who started the Pensacola Bible Institute (not the same as Pensacola Christian College). Ruckman calls the King James Bible an “advanced revelation” and considers it the final, preserved word of God for English speakers. Brother Jack Hyles from Indiana also believed in the KJ, once saying “Don’t come to me with your stinkin’ ‘only the original is inspired’! You’re not intellectual… you’re retarded!”

Just remember, prospective PCC Students: The #1 measurement of your spiritual condition will be how well you obey the rules, and secondly, how much you turn in others who don’t obey the rules.

Corey Haim
1971-2010

Actor and former teen idol Corey Haim has died at the age of 38, Los Angeles police has confirmed. Haim was found unresponsive inside his mother’s apartment, apparent victim of an accidental overdose. He was later pronounced dead at a Burbank hospital. Haim has been struggling with drug addiction.

Haim was an 80s teen heartthrob kid. Best known for Silver Bullet, Lucas, The Lost Boys, License to Drive, and Watchers, he would frequently do work with actor and friend Corey Feldman. Both actors appeared on the show “The Two Coreys,” which aired from 2007 to 2008 and they also returned for a Lost Boys sequel in 2008 (Lost Boys: The Tribe) We last saw Haim in the immortal Crank: High Voltage.

Regarding drugs, Haim once said:

I was working on Lost Boys when I smoked my first joint. But a year before that, I was starting to drink beer on the set of the film Lucas. I lived in Los Angeles in the ’80s, which was not the best place to be. I did cocaine for about a year and a half, then it led to crack. I started on the downers which were a hell of a lot better than the uppers because I was a nervous wreck. But one led to two, two led to four, four led to eight, until at the end it was about 85 a day – the doctors could not believe I was taking that much. And that was just the valium – I’m not talking about the other pills I went through.

What you are looking at is Mattel’s Ballerina Barbie and Ballerina Theresa dolls hanging side by side at a Louisiana Walmart store. The Theresa dolls (black Barbies) are on sale for $3. The white Barbies are $5.93.

A Walmart spokeswoman said that the price change was because they were trying to clear space for new inventory. “The red price sticker indicates that this particular doll was on clearance; though both dolls were priced the same to start, one was marked down due to its lower sales to hopefully increase purchase from customers.”

Walmart is being criticized over the price difference:

“The implication of the lowering of the price is that’s devaluing the black doll,” said Thelma Dye, the executive director of the Northside Center for Child Development, a Harlem, N.Y. organization founded by psychologists and segregation researchers Kenneth B. Clark and Marnie Phipps Clark. “While it’s clear that’s not what was intended, sometimes these things have collateral damage,” Dye said.

Of course the black doll was “devalued”. That’s because it doesn’t sell as well. Economics, not sociology.

Walmart could have decided “that it’s really important that we as a company don’t send a message that we value blackness less than whiteness,” said Lisa Wade, an assistant sociology professor at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Wade said that when white dolls outsell black dolls, it’s usually because black parents are more likely than white parents to buy their children dolls of a different race. “Most white parents wouldn’t think to buy a black doll for their child, even if they believe in equality and all those things.” Studies show Americans continue to internalize the heirarchical notion that lighter skin tone is considered “better than” darker, Wade said.

Gwen Sharp, a sociology professor at Nevada State College, puts forth the theory that the darker colored dolls simply don’t look like real-life black people, and people buy dolls whose features resemble themselves more closely. “…it seems more real and less symbolic of a change to have a doll that actually presents a range of attractive features rather than ‘Oh we’ve changed the skin tone slightly”

Mattel does have a line of new African American dolls, “So In Style,” featuring dolls with wider cheeks, broader noses and fuller lips. A spokeswoman for Mattel says there has been a good response to the new line.

Retail analyst Lori Wachs thinks that Walmart should just keep the prices the same and then eat the loss. “I fully respect retailers rights to mark things down as they see fit but I also think they need to look at the bigger picture. I think there are certain things companies have to be sensitive about and clearly this was one of them.”

Uh, this is Walmart. You must be kidding.

Mary Josephine Ray

Odd news: two of the oldest people in the world – supercentenarians – have passed away within hours of each other.

The oldest person in the United States, Mary Josephine Ray, died last Sunday at 114 years of age. A few hours later, Daisey Bailey, the second oldest American at 113 years of age, passed on. L. Stephen Coles, a director of the Gerontology Research Group, stated that it was very rare for two supercentenarians to die on the same day.

Daisey Bailey was born on March 30, 1896 in Tennessee. She worked on a plantation and then in 1943 she moved to Detroit. Her secret for longevity was to eat plenty of veggies and have a little bourbon. Bailey is survived by 80 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren, 30 great-great-grandchildren and 69 great-great-great-grandchildren.

Mary Josephine Ray

Mary Josephine Ray was the oldest person in the United States and the second-oldest in the world. Ray was born May 17, 1895, in Bloomfield, Prince Edward Island, Canada. She moved to the United States at age 3. She lived for 60 years in Maine. She is survived by two sons, eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. How did Josephine live so long? Her granddaughter said: “She just enjoyed life. She never thought of dying at all.”

Santo Cilauro (born in Melbourne, Australia) is a film producer and comedian. One of the co-founders of The D-Generation, Santo wrote and performed in the show during the later half of the 1980s as well as a performer on the early 90s sketch comedy The Late Show. Not to mention co-authoring the Jetlag Travel Guides to Molvania, Phaic Tan and San Sombrero.

Zladko Vladcik (aka Zlad) is his fictitious version of a “Molvanîan” pop music artist. Elektronik Supersonik makes for a cheesy combination of Italo disco and Synthpop, with funny accents and English mis-translations:

The Molvanian heart-throb was informed at the last moment by Eurovision contest officials that his entry had been withdrawn. “Satanism has no place at Eurovision”, was the terse one-line statement issued by the Kiev press office. “ZLAD!” insists his song “I Am The Anti-Pope” is not an attack on Christianity – rather, a light-hearted ballad recounting the short reign of little-known Beelzebub the First – the only Vicar of Christ to have been crucified at the stake. “In Molvania, this is one of our most loved children’s stories”, claimed Zlad!, speaking backwards through a hooded translator.

Santo Cilauro’s Molvanian invention seems very similar to Sacha Baron Cohen’s Kazakhstani journalist Borat. Except, of course, that Molvanîa is a fictional country.

Tammy Clinton, no relation to Bill that we know of

More and more teachers just keep going wild. In Tampa, Florida, Farnell Middle School teach Tammy Clinton, 39, was arrested on 2 counts of lewd and lascivious molestation and 2 counts of lewd and lascivious conduct. Police say she forced a 14 year old boy to touch her breasts as she groped his buttocks and of trying to meet him off campus for sexual activity. Tammy Clinton teaches geography, but she can’t seem to leave biology and sex ed to the experts. Clinton’s record is spotless, and students liked her, explaining why new methods to detect teachers going wild didn’t work.

Clinton is the sixth female Hillsborough teacher arrested for sex in recent years, along with Cristina Butler, Jaymee Wallace, Stephanie Ragusa, Mary Jo Spack, and Debra LaFave.
