This has all stemmed from getting to know Thomas Atkinson from BetMentor.com. Thomas is a professional punter (as they call them across the pond) and specializes in betting the Asian Handicap on soccer matches – a little more about that later.

As it is with any sport, there are certain stats that are good to know when betting, and soccer, or football, isn’t any different.

Home Field Advantage Dominates in Soccer

We already know that the crowd in almost any sports helps the home team. Playing at home can also be advantageous due to nuances of the field as in a baseball park.

According to ProbabilityTheory.com, the home team in soccer matches wins 45% of the time and draws 30%. That means that the home team loses 25% of the time.

This is definitely a state to think about while betting a match.

Winning Score in a Soccer Match will be…

The same post also mentions that you can predict with decent certainty the final outcome of the game if the host team win. While I read this stat in a soccer betting guide, I also found it in the same post at ProbabilityTheory.com.

According to the post, if the home team wins a soccer match, there is a 60% of a chance that the score will be 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1.

Again, another interesting stat.

Asian Handicap & Correct Score System

I mentioned earlier that Thomas Atkinson is a professional soccer bettor that specializes in betting the Asian Handicap.

If you don’t know what the Asian Handicap is, it is a betting line that is similar to the pointspread in American football. It takes the draw aspect of betting soccer out of the equation.

However, the Asian Handicap isn’t just like pointspread betting. Besides have .5 lines, you could also have .25 and .75 spreads. If you are used to betting the pointspread in American football, these don’t mean what you might think.

However, in a game such as poker where deceit is such an integral aspect of the game, there is a science to betting, raising and bluffing. While this article won’t make you a master poker pro, it will give you a basic idea of position and betting.

Playing Early Position

In poker position is everything.

When you are playing in early position or one of the first three spots, you have be very careful.      You could easily get too many chips in on the wrong hand.

Most players will only play top premium hands such as a pair of A’s, K’s or Q’s and nothing more. Others will take a stab with less valuable hands when the table and game proves it necessary.

When deciding to make a bet in early position, you have to consider that there are six to eight more players to your left that could raise you. That is why you would usually bet two to three times the blind. After all, if you have A’s and someone raises you, you just got a good clue about his hand and now have the flop to see how you and he improves.

With so many players playing after you in early position, betting small allows you to start understanding how strong your opposition is without over betting your hand.

Betting in Middle Position

If you are sitting in middle position (seats four, five or six) the picture of the hand has already been started to be painted for you.

If no one calls in front of you, you could easily bet three times the blind with a less than premium hand. After all you have only five other players to act behind you.

This doesn’t mean that you should bluff all the time in middle position. But you could easily call with a weaker hand to see a flop and not be married to the hand if one of the next players raise the pot too much for your less than stellar hand.

Betting In Late Position

Late position consists of the button (Dealer), small blind and big blind. A premium hand can be played with a raise of three to five times the blind. A bet like this now puts the decision on the players ahead of you that are remaining and provides you with more information. As always, the flop and the subsequent betting will provide you with even more insight to your opponents hand.

When you are playing in late position, you have the pleasure of seeing raises and determining if you are going to play your hand well before your turn. But you also have the luxury in playing less than premium hands and see if you hit anything on the flop. Of course this depends on the action ahead of you.

Whether you are playing a live game at the casino or an online poker sit and go, when it comes to action, it all about position.

JustBet Bonus Rollover

As with any sportsbook bonus, there is a rollover requirement that must be met prior to requesting a payout of your winnings.

I learned years ago that betting basketball, especially NCAA basketball, is a different beast in itself than football betting.  After losing so much money while I was in college, I compiled a few basic strategies that have helped me maximize winnings during the college basketball season.

Limit the Number of Games

When I was in college, I wanted action every day whether I was up or down money.  When my book owed me money, I was betting to crush him.  When I was down (which was most of the time), I was chasing my losses.

With so many every week, it is important only to play games that your handicapping labeled a winner.  Especially in college basketball, there is always time during the season to find that great pick.  There is absolutely no reason to bet just to have action.

Have a Weekly Betting Limit

I toyed around with this idea back in the day.

I would set myself a limit that I could lose each week.  If I loss that money, I was done until the next day.

I don’t really follow this strategy anymore because I find it limits your ability to win.  As I said in another post, betting scared is a losing strategy.  It is easy to start the week off badly, and closing up shop early can stop you from going on a winning streak later in the week.

Decrease the Size of Your Unit

Instead of limiting how much I could lose in a week, I decided to decrease my unit size.

This tactic has proven to be a great money management principle for betting college hoops because of the number of games per week.  During the NFL season, I am usually betting 3-6 games per week.  During the NCAA basketball season, I might bet three games in one day.  It is easy to have action on 10-20 games over a seven-day span.

It only made sense to me to decrease my unit by half of what I bet on football.

Focus on a Conference

I don’t personally do this, but I do know people that focus on one or two conferences like the Big East and Big 10.

By doing this, you can limit the games you play each week and dig deeper into the match-up while handicapping each game.  However, you are also passing up other winning opportunities.

Shopping for Value

I follow this principle whether it is football, basketball or World Cup soccer.  I have multiple sportsbook accounts so I can find the best odds on my money.  Without having more than one account, you are just limiting your chances of winning as well as the amount you can win.

Spreading out Your Bankroll

This idea actually started during the days of offline betting by credit when I always had at least two sources to place my bets.

I needed a concrete way to manage my bankroll.  One of which I had physical control.

Since we didn’t settle until we reached a certain number, my primary reason at the time was to spread out my money.  If I was close to having to pay one source, I would limit my wagers with that source.  On the flip side, the account that was closer to a payout would be used a little more.

Another benefit to this, but one that you shouldn’t experience betting with a recommended sportsbook, is that neither of my sources could get a read on my tendencies.

I had friends that used some of the same sources but would have their lines and odds bumped on them because they bet on the same teams week in and week out.  Since I wouldn’t wager with the same source for every game, my betting tendencies were hidden a little more.

Creating a Betting Market

I was rather new to sports betting when I was betting offline.  I honestly didn’t realize that there would be a greater benefit to spreading out my bankroll.

Because of my ignorance, the idea of managing my bankroll and limiting my exposure was the initial intention of having multiple betting sources.   But I inadvertently created a betting market for myself, which proved just as beneficial – if not more.

Looking back at it now, I can’t believe how naïve I was.

You would think that this would be an automatic expectation.  However, it doesn’t matter if you bet online or go to a sportsbooks in Las Vegas – pointspreads and odds will vary.

It is this variability in the lines and odds that creates a betting market that you can use to your benefit.

A half-point can be the difference between a win, a loss or a push.  This is the major reason you need to have multiple sportsbooks accounts.

Anyway that you can increase your odds, you have to take advantage of it.  And since opening an account is free, there is no reason why you shouldn’t have multiple sportsbook accounts.
