Because I thought you may kill me if I attempt to liveblog another conference, here are just the absolute Must Knows for what’s coming out of Blogworld in Vegas. &lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;I hopped into this session on a whim and I’m glad that I did.  &lt;a href="http://www.convinceandconvert.com/"&gt;Jay Baer&lt;/a&gt; and Amber &lt;a href="http://www.brasstackthinking.com/"&gt;Naslund&lt;/a&gt; were on hand to pass out advanced copies of their upcoming book &lt;a href="http://nowrevolutionbook.com/"&gt;The New R(evolution)&lt;/a&gt; and talk a little about how social media is changing relationships between business and customer, and how we can take advantage of that.  Essentially, social media has changed the way businesses relate to customers. The relationship  used to be master/servant. Now it’s peer/peer.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Like it or not, customers have been trained to interact with businesses on social media and you can’t put that genie back in the bottle. If you’re NOT listening, you’re telling your customers that you don’t care about them.  Social media has changed business by making it real-time.  We feel the speed, we feel the urgency, we feel the pressure to do something different but we haven’t yet figured out how to adapt. The same way we’ve changed our businesses to deal with the Industrial revolution and the digital revolution, we have to deal with the social media revolution.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Jay and Amber call this change the New Revolution. It’s a revolution characterized by speed, expectations, systems and tools that we’re not familiar with. We know that speed matters.  We have an unprecedented opportunity to change what we do. There are 7 major shifts businesses need to make to adapt:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Engineer a new bedrock&lt;/strong&gt;: The culture of our organizations has to change. We have to have open communication, we have to have an attitude that says it’s okay for all people to be involved in communication. We have to shift the culture in a way that’s representative of intent. Tom Webster calls it the theory of the firm – what do you stand for, what do you believe, are your people equipped to communicate that?&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Acquire talent you can trust&lt;/strong&gt;: Every company is full of great people. Social media lets you show that much easier than ever before.   Everybody in your company is in customer service whether you like it or not.  You need to have the right people on the line. What do the right people look like?  They can engage with customers, harvest stories, listen, understand success metrics, and they immerse themselves in your brand 24 hours a day.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Organize your armies&lt;/strong&gt;: You want as many people in your organization as you can active in social media.  It doesn’t what their actual job function is, you should be harvesting the passion of your employees. Passion trumps position in social media.   That’s how you get more cars on the road.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Answer the new telephone&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Emphasis response-ability&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Build a fire extinguisher&lt;/strong&gt;: The Chinese symbol for opportunity is also crisis.  You’ll probably never have a social media crisis hit your brand but…what if you do? It’s the least necessary thing until it’s the most necessary thing.  When a fire breaks out you need to acknowledge it, arm your people, fight with social media water, make an FAQ to answer questions, provide a pressure release value (ie keep the Discussion tab open on your Facebook page) and then document and learn from it.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Make a calculator&lt;/strong&gt;: We hate math. Social media is measurable.  If you can’t it’s because you don’t have the tools to get the data, you have the data but you don’t know what it means, you don’t have any way to make sense of the data, you don’t WANT to know the results of the data. Why are you in social media to begin with? There’s no law (yet) that says you have to be in social media.   You’re either here for awareness, sales or loyalty. You have to pick ONE reason for being there.  Where are your efforts going to be most focused?&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;h2&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"&gt;Location, Location, Location&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;Speaking on this panel where Jeff Holden of &lt;a href="http://whrrl.com/"&gt;Whrrl&lt;/a&gt;, Lawrence Colburn of &lt;a href="http://doubledutch.me/"&gt;DoubleDutch&lt;/a&gt; and Wayne Sutton of &lt;a href="http://trioutnc.com/"&gt;TriOut&lt;/a&gt;.  One of the big questions that came up was how do we get adoption of location-based services to reach a mainstream audience? Everyone seemed to agree that it starts with education.  Lawrence mentioned that the really smart thing Facebook did with Facebook Places is that they allowed people to check in their friends.  What that did was expose the idea of ‘checkin in’ to a group that may not have previously been aware of it. Now they are!  It teaches people how to use the check in and what that actually means. We also have to increase the value associated with checking in.  There needs to be a greater value than just letting your friends know where you are because not everyone WANTS to let their friends know where they are.    We also need to realize that not everyone owns a smartphone. We just think they do because we’re nerds.&lt;br /&gt;
Then panel also spoke about how places makes content more relevant. . Content can be a deal, but anyone can give away free stuff.  He thinks content delivered upon check ins could be a welcome message with info it. The most important word around content is “relevance”. He loves Yelp but he gets super frustrated with it.  You want to deliver the right content to the right person.  I wasn’t too aware of Whrrl before (other than just knowing it existed) but I like that it creates ‘societies’ for people.  That means when you’re looking for a sushi recommendation, you’re getting it from a sushi person, not a burger person. The session ended up talking about Facebook and whether these location-based apps are afraid of giving Facebook their information.  It seems they’re not.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"&gt;How To Survive A Snark Attack&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;With a title like that, how on Earth could I say away. ;)  &lt;a href="http://everydotconnects.com/"&gt;Connie Reece&lt;/a&gt; was leading the discussion for this panel and helping bloggers to understand the difference between a snark attack and a good old fashioned troll.   As bloggers, we have to learn the signs so that we know the proper way to respond.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Snark Attacks&lt;/strong&gt;:  Snark attacks are led by verbal snipers and critical naysayers.  However, they can typically be reasoned with and calmed down if you come back at them intelligently.  The trick is to not immediately react.  Remember that it’s really easy for people to say things online that they would never say in person.  We also can’t discern tone very well online.  Strategies for dealing with snark:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Take a deep breath&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Set the tone; be human&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Follow your guidelines&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Moderate comments, if necessary&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;Connie shared a really great case study on snark attacks that featured one of my personal search favs – Jennifer Laycock. Connie was working with a woman named Aruni Gunasegaram from Babblesoft.  Aruni sent out a press release about her new baby manager software. Jennifer got wind of the release and wrote a &lt;a href="http://thelactivist.blogspot.com/2007/03/good-grief-how-anal-can-we-get.html"&gt;snarktastic post&lt;/a&gt; on her blog that was highly critical. Though Aruni was heartbroken over the post, instead of reacting emotionally she called in Connie. Connie was able to help Aruni understand how to best approach Jennifer.  The result was that Aruni and Jennifer both found common ground and created a good relationships.  Jennifer wrote about &lt;a href="http://www.searchengineguide.com/jennifer-laycock/bloggers-need-to-accept-responsibility-t.php"&gt;her dealing of the situation&lt;/a&gt;, as &lt;a href="http://www.entrepremusings.com/index.php/2008/06/05/how-to-recover-from-a-scathing-blog-post/"&gt;did Aruni&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Trolls&lt;/strong&gt;: Trolls have been around forever on the Internet.  They attempt to provoke people and get the conversation off track.  Trolls try to take over your blog comments or your Facebook page.  It’s a way of brandjacking.   Connection mentions the protest that Green Peace organized a few months ago against Nestle.  They went on to Nestle’s Facebook page and filled their wall with posts about how awful they were.  Nestle didn’t handle it that well. Their first response was that they were using their logo illegal – which just made the mess bigger.  What they should have done was moderate the comments better and brought in someone who knew how to handle the situation.  They also should have created a discussion section and to take the conversation off the wall and continue it somewhere else. That would have at least gotten the most vicious stuff off their first page.&lt;br /&gt;

Trolls use flame bait. Connie said that trolls were typically male, young, and with tons of free time, but I’m not sure I agree with all of that.  Us “ladies” can be just as trolling when we want to be. ;)   The biggest difference between a troll and a snark attack is that you can’t reason with a troll. Instead, you want to stay calm, ignore them and make sure you establish a clear comment rule that you enforce.   You should also get comfortable growing a thick skin because while most people on the Internet are nice, others are “special”.  Some good tactics, I say. :)&lt;br /&gt;

What are the things businesses need to be aware of, what are the negative factors, what are the things they can control, how do they leverage between social, local and paid search to leverage their local results?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What criteria is impact local search?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Claiming business listings&lt;/strong&gt;: Specifically making sure that only one listing is claimed, verified and enhanced.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Citations from relevant Web site&lt;/strong&gt;: If Yelp, City Search or other sites targeted toward your local customers are mentioning or linking back to your Web site, that can really help with rankings by giving credibility to your business.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Consistent business listings&lt;/strong&gt;: You want want three different business addresses listed or to have addresses with different phone numbers.  You want to make sure it’s the same information showing up everywhere.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Getting customer reviews&lt;/strong&gt;: Quantity of reviews impacts more than quality of reviews. Even though negative review does impact conversion but really quantity of review is a huge conversion factor. Encouraging people to leave reviews online is an important ranking factor for local search.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Map Search&lt;/strong&gt;: Include a KML file for your business:  You want to make sure your business can be properly displayed on Google Earth, Maps, Mobile devices etc.  By adding information about your business location in a KML format, you ensure that your business is properly listed on these channels.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;I’m always curious to get experts’ opinions on this: In the age of Twitter, Facebook, etc, do small businesses need a Web site?  What do they miss out on by NOT having one, if anything?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Yes, small business owners do need a Web site.  It’s one of the ranking criteria, but your site has to be optimized for local search.  That means including localized content that uses your geographic keywords, including a local phone number, displaying a real address (not a PO Box), etc.  If your site isn’t optimized with these things, just having the Web site doesn’t have much meaning.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Google is taking some heavy steps to ramp up Google Places and corner the local market.  How much attention should SMBs be giving Google Places?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If SMBs can do one thing, they should be taking care of their Google Place page.  We see phenomenal amount of organic traffic coming from Google Places.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What 3-5 things should small business owners or SEOs representing SMBs focus on to improve their visibility in local search?  What’s gaining importance?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Create a Web site that is enhanced for local search.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Make sure your sure Google Place page is enhanced, claimed, and validated.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Use Google Tags [Benu noted she’s seen phenomenal ROI associated with these.]&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Offer coupons&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Link to your other social profiles from your Google Place page. Doing so helps all the profiles to rank.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What’s the biggest hurdle you’re seeing for SMB owners trying to get their sites ranked? How can they overcome it?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The biggest hurdle I’m seeing with small business owners is making sure their data is consistent in all IYPs and listings are validating in Search Engines.   The IYPs are gaining information about your business from all different sources and SMBs need to sit down and say THIS is the information the search engines (and users) need to now about my business.  Anything you can do to ensure you have consistent data in the IYPs is going to help your business.  Unfortunately, creating reliable listings is at the bottom of most SMB owners priority lists because they’re so busy.  But you want to be able to rank for your geographic terms in the 7-pack. I love MailChimp – and usually recommend it first to all my clients needing email newsletters. Yes, I have to sheepishly giggle that it is a bit cutesy, but soon you find that under that colorful/playful/sarcastic exterior lies a very powerful email engine with more tools than most any other provider out there. And where else can you have a chimp hurl humorous come-ons at you while you set up your next campaign?&lt;br /&gt;
Their new app especially for iPad shows off all the myriad uses of the device – and helps tap into the fascination by getting people excited about giving way their email address! I can see it being a great use at trade shows, stores, restaurants and more. I would suggest locking down the iPad so it doesn’t find a new owner though.&lt;br /&gt;

Google Tags is a new feature from Google for local businesses that already have a free business listing with &lt;a href="http://www.google.com/local/add/businessCenter"&gt;Google Places&lt;/a&gt;. By adding a Google Tag, you can choose which one of these items you most want to promote in Google’s local search results. These steps are simpler than you might think. Those who aren’t sold on simplicity might ask: why would I want it?&lt;br /&gt;
Here are three convincing reasons that may work for many blogs:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;Your blog will be &lt;strong&gt;easier to read and navigate&lt;/strong&gt;, and visitors will stick with it.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Simplicity translates into &lt;strong&gt;strong branding&lt;/strong&gt;. Like a  clean office, a simple blog gives visitors a good impression of you and  could lead to new subscribers, customers or members.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;You’ll just plain look cooler.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ol&gt;Convinced that a simpler design is better for your blog? Great. Enough jibber jabber, then. Let’s get started.&lt;br /&gt;

Prioritize content and call-to-action elements over everything else.&lt;br /&gt;
Follow the 80/20 rule: 20% of what’s on the page delivers 80% of the value. &lt;strong&gt;What content do visitors come to your blog for?&lt;/strong&gt; What do you want to achieve? Do you want visitors to read and subscribe to a blog, buy a product or sign up for a service?&lt;br /&gt;
The call-to-action elements are the 20%, and everything else is the  80%. Put that 20% front and center; give it priority placement, and make  it visible on each page, because it’s what matters most.&lt;br /&gt;
So, &lt;strong&gt;how do you make your content important?&lt;/strong&gt; You do it in any number of ways, depending on what’s appropriate for your blog. Here are just a few:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Make the sidebar smaller.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Enlarge the font in the main content area so that it’s larger than the font in surrounding areas.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Thicken or darken the font.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Put graphics and eye-catching elements in the main content area rather than in the sidebar or header.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Next,&lt;/strong&gt; remove as much of the 80% (i.e. the unessential elements) as possible.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;li&gt;Are you the blog’s only author? Then remove the byline.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Does most of your social media traffic come from one or two sources  (e.g. Twitter and Facebook)? Then keep those icons and ditch the others.&lt;/li&gt;

Think about it: when was the last time you clicked on one of those  social media badges in a row of ten or more? Isn’t it easier when  there’s just a “Retweet” button?&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;h1&gt;3. Get Rid of Unnecessary Sidebar Elements&lt;/h1&gt;&lt;a href="http://ittybiz.com/"&gt;&lt;img alt="IttyBiz" height="250" src="http://netdna.webdesignerdepot.com/uploads/simpler_blog_design/3_ittybiz.jpg" width="400" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
The more stuff that is in the sidebar, the greater the chance that  visitors will click away from the main content (that all-important 20%),  so make the sidebar as lean and unobtrusive as possible.&lt;br /&gt;
Remove all non-critical widgets and elements, including:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Admin and meta features&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Links&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Recent posts&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Top comments&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Latest tweets&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;Here’s a &lt;strong&gt;simple way&lt;/strong&gt; to determine whether a sidebar  widget or element should stay: ask yourself whether it would be worth a  visitor to stop reading and click on it. If not, get rid of it.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;h1&gt;4. Shorten the Header’s Height&lt;/h1&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com/"&gt;&lt;img alt="I Will Teach You to be Rich" height="250" src="http://netdna.webdesignerdepot.com/uploads/simpler_blog_design/4_i-will-teach-you-to-be-rich.jpg" width="400" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Move more content above the fold by shortening the height of the header.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Why&lt;/strong&gt; is this important? The more content that appears above the fold,  the more likely new visitors will stay and read, because they’ll  immediately see the content without having to scroll or scan down.&lt;br /&gt;
A few simple ways to shorten the header’s height:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Remove white space; your theme’s style sheet is your friend.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Make the logo smaller; again, it’s style sheet time.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Reduce wasted space by combining two rows. If your logo doesn’t need its own row, move the navigation menu to its left or right.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;h1&gt;5. Reduce the Number of Colors&lt;/h1&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.chrisbrogan.com/"&gt;&lt;img alt="Chris Brogan" height="250" src="http://netdna.webdesignerdepot.com/uploads/simpler_blog_design/5_chris-brogan.jpg" width="400" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
The fewer the colors in your design, the easier it will be for the  visitor’s eyes (which are lazy by nature) to focus, meaning the visitor  will stay on your blog longer. Try to use no more than three colors  (that is, three in addition to your main text color, which is probably  black or white): one for the background, one as your primary and a third  as your secondary.&lt;br /&gt;
Here’s one possible three-color scheme:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Background: white&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Primary (logo, links, call-to-action buttons): blue&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Secondary (icons, graphic flourishes): green&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;When in doubt, use fewer colors.&lt;br /&gt;
The more colors you display, the more stimulated the visitor’s eye  will be, and the greater the effort they will have to exert to focus,  and thus the more inclined they will be to click that “Back” button.&lt;br /&gt;
Notice how Apple sticks with just white and silver. That might sound  boring, but it’s stylish, simple and attractive to most people.&lt;br /&gt;

Investigators say the fire may have started from a bullet that ignited the dry brush in the area during regular scheduled machine gun training exercises. Fire fighters reported quickly to the scene and are actively trying to contain the fire. There are no reported injuries and no structures are threatened at this point, according to Utah National Guard.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As of 5:30 p.m., evacuations have begun for the Cove area of Herriman. Authorities are asking evacuees to head to Herriman High School located at 11917 south and 6000 west. Strong and unpredictable winds made fire officials decide to evacuate hundreds of homes in Herriman. "We got home from church and it was like, whoa, this is getting close," said Jennifer Kunzler.&lt;br /&gt;
