London is said to be one of the most walkable cities in the world. And to put this claim to the test, I laced up my walking shoes for the Public Sector Challenge London Bridges Walk. Spanning West to East, the route gives a fresh perspective on all that this amazing city has to offer.

Receiving my medal at the end of the 25K Public Sector Challenge London Bridges walk

What is the Public Sector Challenge walk route?

The walk is split into two sections. You can either start in Furnivall Gardens, Hammersmith and walk 25kms to St Catherine’s Dock. Or you can join the walk at Battersea Park and walk the last 15k to the same finish point. Zig-zagging sixteen bridges, the walk takes in some of the most iconic views of London’s landmarks. Feeling reckless, I opted to do the full 25kms.

Thames path sign encountered while walking the Public Sector Challenge London Bridges walk

Who participates in the Public Sector Challenge London Bridges Walk?

As the name suggests, the walk is aimed at public sector workers. For example, I met walkers from the NHS, the London Fire Brigade and local authorities from as far away as Leicester. However, not to be outdone, private sector recruitment firms and consultants were also walking. In total, 1000 walkers took part this year accompanied by children and canine companions.

How did the Public Sector Challenge walk come about?

The walk is the brainchild of Jonathan Stephenson, CEO of Brentwood and Rochford combined authorities. His aim is to unite public sector workers and partners to raise funds for a variety of charities. Furthermore, the walk also aims to boost physical and mental health during one of the toughest months of the year.

walking along the Thames Path from Hammersmith to Putney Bridge in the distance

What level of fitness is required to do the walk?

The walk is aimed at all levels of fitness. And the organisers stress that you can do as much or as little as you like. Furthermore, the riverside walk is flat with only occasional steps leading up to a bridge. However as you’re walking on concrete, spare a brief spell of mud at the start, supportive walking shoes are essential.

Unlike Parkrun, the event is not competitive and everyone walks at their own pace. With so many iconic photo opportunities, you can stop frequently for a breather. As an experienced walker, I completed the walk in five hours but everyone goes at their own pace.

Do you need good navigations skills for the walk?

As someone with the worst sense of direction, I managed the walk no problem. There’s a handy map on the walk website which you can download to your phone. But the handiest marker was the purple bobble hats ahead of me. When in doubt, there will always be a bobble hat on the horizon somewhere!

Hammersmith Bridge: the first of sixteen bridges as part of the Public Sector Challenge London Bridges walk

Also watch out for the orange signs telling you how many kilometres you’ve walked. While a bit soul-destroying at the start, they really boost the spirits from the half way point.

the 14km sign as part of the Public Sector Challenge London Bridges 25k walk

Hammersmith to Battersea Bridge

The route shows London’s diversity in all its glory. Hammersmith feels like Henley as sculling boats sweep past in an elegant procession. Here, iconic sights include the former Harrods furniture warehouse. This Grade II listed former furniture depository is now home to 250 homes in “Harrods village”. As you’d expect, prices are astronomical with a five-bed penthouse setting you back £8.5 million.

The former Harrods furniture warehouse – now converted to 250 townhouses and apartments

Definitely not for public sector workers. Meanwhile, on the opposite side, the newly developed Fulham Pier swings into view. Home to the famous Craven Cottage football stadium, the Pier offers a dazzling array of coffee shops, eateries and even a riverside market to enjoy on non-match days.

Hurlingham Books

One of the most interesting discoveries early on is Hurlingham Books – reputedly South-West London’s oldest second-hand bookshop. Its shop and adjacent warehouse is crammed to the rafters with more than one million books.

Hurlingham Books – one of the oldest second hand book shops in South London

Once past leafy Fulham, the walk becomes increasingly urban. Here, high-rise blocks predominate until you reach Battersea bridge and enter the sanctuary of the park. It’s at this point that the 15k walkers join the throng and it’s the perfect pit stop for an impromptu lunch break. After you get past the park, the newly renovated Battersea Park power station swings into view. Yet another famous London landmark given the Midas touch in a city that never stops changing .

Battersea Park to Westminster

After Battersea Park, the route becomes a concrete jungle veering from the river to streets with heavy traffic. This is the least interesting part but fortunately it’s not long before the hallowed halls of the Houses of Parliament appear. Suddenly sucked into throngs of tourists, you jostle past the Aquarium and the London Eye and onto Hungerford Bridge.

Statue to King Richard 1 on his horse outside the Houses of Parliament, Westminster

Westminster to City of London

The dragons of the City of London herald another world. The famous “wobbly” Millennium Bridge gives the most iconic view onto St Paul’s Cathedral.

The Millennium Bridge facing St Paul’s Cathedral in the City of London

And on our descent, the riverside pathways becomes narrower revealing hidden passageways and old warehouses. I encounter some of my old work haunts including the infamous Banker pub. Crossing Tower Bridge is a moment of triumph as the skyscrapers move ever closer. The last stretch takes you onto St Catherine’s Dock which suddenly appears like a mini Marbella right in the heart of the City. The tranquil marina provides a fitting end to a gruelling day of walking.

walking across Tower Bridge as part of the Public Sector Challenge London Bridges walk

The end of the walk

The walk ends at the Dickens Inn in St Catherine’s Dock. The three-storey, 18th century timber warehouse was renamed in honour of Charles Dickens by his great grandson. It’s a fitting end to a walk filled with so much history.

Receiving my medal at the end of the 25K Public Sector Challenge London Bridges walk

Athletics legend, Colin Jackson, was there to greet us with our medals before we trudged inside for a well-earned complimentary cuppa. It was a fantastic day’s walk and as a seasoned Londoner, it gave me the chance to see the capital with fresh eyes. Would I do it again? I’m signing up now for next year.

The first time I stumbled across Hampton Court Palace was following a move to Kingston. A Sunday afternoon riverside stroll revealed one of the most jaw-dropping sights I’d ever witnessed. The Palace’s endless manicured grounds and imposing turrets and towers immediately captivated me. But, I’m ashamed to say it’s taken me more than 20 years to step inside.

How to get to Hampton Court Palace

The palace is located in Hampton Court, (London Travelcard zone 6), which is a thirty- minute journey from Waterloo train station. You need to change at Surbiton to get the train to Hampton Court. It’s then a ten-minute walk from the station.

Audio-visual projections in Hampton Court Palace

Entry to Hampton Court Palace

Entry to Hampton Court Palace is a steep £28.00 per person but you can take advantage of half price tickets offered from early January until 6 February. However, if palaces are your thing, you can get an annual membership for a bargain £60.00. This gives you unlimited access to Hampton Court, the Tower of London, Kensington Palace and Hillsborough Castle and Gardens.

Why is Hampton Court Palace famous?

The Palace is famous first and foremost for its connections with King Henry VIII and the Tudor dynasty. Henry brought all his six wives here and unsurprisingly there are rumours of hauntings by Catherine Howard and Jane Seymour. It’s ancient walls have witnessed lavish Tudor banquets and more drama, intrigue and turmoil than Bridgerton on steroids. In later life, it also became the location for the development of the plans for the Normandy landings.

What is there to see at Hampton Court Palace?

As the Royal residence to the Tudors, the Palace offers a fascinating insight into Elizabethan court life. Firstly, the vast kitchens provide the entry point to the tour. Here, beef, veal, mutton, venison, pheasant and chicken would be painstakingly prepared on roasting spits by long-suffering “turnbroches.” These poor servants were frequently burnt or injured in the line of duty and had to be retired early. The roasting spits would be suspended over an enormous fireplace which still today blasts out a welcome heat during this chilly January day.

Original open fire in the kitchens of Hampton Court Palace

Once the meat was cooked, the master chef would use thyme, rosemary, sage and other exotic herbs sourced from across the world to season the meat. However, in a nod to current thinking, fruit and vegetables were also grown locally in the gardens – a tradition that still continues today.

Kitchen worker mural in the kitchens at Hampton Court Palace

The Chocolate Room

It turns out that the Tudors were chocolate lovers! And in keeping with the elite of the time – they even had their own chocolate room. Alas there was no Dairy Milk back in those days. But, instead, they treated themselves to their favourite hot chocolate drink flavoured with cinnamon, cloves and chilli procured from their very own spicery. Consequently, chocolate became a sought-after, luxury item to offer to guests as a way to flaunt wealth. Shame there were no tastings on offer when I visited.

Chocolate Room inside Hampton Court Palace

The Great Hall

The most impressive part of the Palace is undoubtedly the Great Hall. It was designed to promote King Henry VIII’s power and domination as a place for dining and entertaining guests. And today its grandeur remains firmly intact. The vast timber hammerbeam roof was constructed in 1553 in a nod to the architectural style of his medieval predecessors. Quirks abound from the entwined letters H & A – referencing King Henry VIII’s marriage to Ann Boleyn through to the curious “Eavesdroppers” – the carved and painted heads that adorn the roof.

antlers on display in the Great Hall of Hampton Court Palace

Adding to the opulence are the famous Abraham tapestries. These floor-to-ceiling works of woven art were first hung in the Great Hall in 1546. And still today, their fine wool, gold and silver threads look like new. Hand-crafted in Belgium using the finest English wool, they remain second only to the Crown Jewels in terms of value. Its not surprising to learn that King Henry VIII adored tapestries and allegedly owned 600 in his time.

Chapel Royal

While still on the first floor of the Palace, it’s well worth a peek over the balcony onto Chapel Royal. On the viewing gallery, there’s also a replica of King Henry VIII’s fabulously flamboyant, jewel-encrusted crown. The church has welcomed Kings and Queens for 450 years and still accepts visitors today. Anyone can attend the religious services – full details on the times can be found here. If visiting the Palace on a Sunday or at other service times, you will have to wait until the services are finished before visiting the viewing gallery.

View onto Chapel Royal at Hampton Court Palace

Hampton Court Gardens

The gardens span 60 acres of formal gardens and 750 acres of historic parkland – all set within a stone’s throw of the River Thames. While not quite on the same scale as the grounds at Blenheim Palace, there’s still plenty to explore. Furthermore, the Palace opens the gardens to the public for free on the following days. The is much to explore: from the vast kitchen garden through to the baroque privy garden, the fragrant rose garden and of course the famous Maze.

view from the first floor of Hampton Court Palace onto the grounds

Hampton Court Maze

And no trip to Hampton Court can be complete without a visit to the UK’s oldest surviving hedge maze. It’s undoubtedly the Palace’s most popular attraction with children and adults alike. Covering more than a third of an acre, it has been perplexing visitors since 1700. It takes around 20 minutes to walk round – provided you don’t get lost! The claustrophobic walls combined with the narrow passageways makes this one not for the faint-hearted.

inside the narrow walls of the Hampton Court Maze

What has been filmed at Hampton Court Palace?

The Palace has featured in productions ranging from Bridgerton through to Sherlock Holmes: a game of shadows, Pirates of the Caribbean and The theory of Everything. Key filming locations include King Henry VIII’s kitchens, the formal gardens and of course the maze.

Hampton Court Palace is a fantastic day out no matter what time of year you visit. Furthermore, as King Henry VIII’s former home, it’s corridors have witnessed more drama. turmoil and intrigue than we could ever imagine. The Palace offers opulence on the grandest scale imaginable with a history as rich as the 400-year-old tapestries on the walls.

New Year – new travel trends. Are you already dreaming of your next holiday? But how do you decide? According to a recent survey of 14,000 global travellers, travel now begins with a motivation and not a destination. “Whycations” are just one of the new travel trends that will decide where we end up on holiday this year. If you’ve no idea where to start, read on to find out more.

espadrilles hung up outside a shoe shop in Soller, Mallorca

Deciding not where but why we want to travel

It’s no longer where we’re going but why are we going? And this year holidaymakers will be pondering the why before pressing the button on any booking sites. Travel is now driven by emotions – with the main drivers being the desire to recharge, share hobbies and embrace meaningful experiences.

views onto the sea from Isola Bella island, Sicily

Why we all need to rest and recharge

As testament to our busy lives, 56% of us go on holiday to rest and recharge – making it the top motivation of this year’s travel trends. This could be simply listening to the sound of the sea, soaking in an outdoor hut tub or forest bathing. furthermore, 37% of us want to spend time in nature to potentially improve our mental health.

Going solo on holiday – one of the key travel trends of 2026

The next surprising trend is that one in four of us plan to travel alone on holiday this year. And 48% of those travelling with others plan to add on solo days at the start or end of their trip. Even those who are travelling in a group, plan to seek out moments of solitude. And the much maligned silent retreats are now actively sought by 57% of American travellers according to a Morning Consult report. Hushpitality is the new buzz word in hotels. Silence really is golden in the travel trends of 2026.

Sun setting on a road in Libeen near Schull on the Mizen Peninsula

The impact of generational influences on family holiday travel trends

Today’s travel party will take on a variety of sizes as different generations come together to share holiday experiences. There’s now a renewed appreciation of the value of these shared experiences. In fact, 74% of travellers believe this is key to strengthening family bonds.

Travelling with three or more generations is soon to become the norm and more grandparents will depart with just the grandchildren in tow. Children play a pivotal role in holiday planning with 78% of parents claiming that their children inspire them to seek out new travel experiences. This reflects wider travel trends where experiences are valued higher than material gifts according to 86% of families.

silhouette of a girl hula hooping – photo: Niko-Si

The rise of inheritourism

Interestingly, 73% of millennials and Generation Z respondents claim that their travel preferences have been shaped by their parents. It’s no surprise that France’s enduring popularity with UK travellers is due to family holidays across the Channel. Furthermore, 53% of adults travelling with children will have at least one adult child in the party travelling on their parent’s dime. And 59% of travellers agree that whoever pays will be responsible for the travel destination.

Finding your tribe on holiday

20% of travellers cite sporting events and related entertainment as being their key motivation to travel. 63% state they’ve made new friends and one third of travellers plan to enjoy their passions with others on group trips in 2026. A further 31% of travellers are actively seeking groups or communities to join when they travel. Hiking is just one pursuit that’s great to attend with others.

Enduring travel trends: home comforts still count

While we’re keen to expand our horizons through new experiences – home comforts still matter. A whopping 79% of travellers say familiar menu items serve as a source of comfort. This may well explain why I was served up Lurpak butter rather than olive oil on my recent holiday to Greece. Despite the obvious benefits of dining out, 48% of travellers still choose to cook their own meals while abroad. Even more astonishing is the fact that 77% of travellers enjoy browsing local grocery stores. They claim to be seeking out authentic local food and drink offerings but is it really a quest to find HP sauce/?

ice cream flake to enjoy during holiday at home

The new travel trend: curiosity leave

Addressing work-life in-balances is another emerging theme for 2026. 72% of travellers expressed a desire to take additional time off work to explore a hobby or personal passion. 60% also said they would be happy to take an extended break for months or even years to travel. This desire reflects a frustration that three in five travellers feel with their current annual leave allocation does not allow enough time to plan proper holidays. An unsurprising half of global travellers surveyed would take a pay cut in exchange for unlimited leave. Even more alarming is that 44% of workers would be ready to quit their job if they were refused an annual leave request. Take note employers!

In conclusion, we are all being much more intentional with our travel choices in 2026. The need to rest and recharge, seek solitude and connect with others is what gives us the most holiday satisfaction. As the survey points out our holidays are precious and one of the few chances that we get to explore new horizons and really embrace our true selves. Where will you go and what will you do this year? Please let me know in the comments.

It’s hard to believe that we’re nearly at the end of 2025. And what a year it’s been. From swashbuckling adventures on the Cutty Sark to Martian slaying at the War of the Worlds Immersive Experience. And from the sizzling Sicilian town of Taormina to the emerald seas of the Greek islands. Read on to find out more about my escapades in my year in review.

Spirit kite by Martin Lester on display at the Portsmouth kite festival

A swashbuckling afternoon on the Cutty Sark

The year kicked off to a great start with adventures on the high seas of Royal Greenwich. The Cutty Sark’s credentials are made all the more impressive by its near destruction by fire in 2007. As an ideal office escape, it transports you from London to Australia on a sea-faring adventure of epic proportions. And the hardships endured will give you a whole new respect for the comforts of the office.

Entrance to the Cutty Sark exhibition in Greenwich

Martian slaying at the War of the Worlds Immersive Experience

An evening of martian slaying certainly hit the spot after a hard day’s slog on the spreadsheets. The War of the Worlds Immersive experience takes you on an adrenalin-fuelled journey through intergalactic war zones where aliens rule the earth. From crawling through tunnels to battling invaders on the high seas – this was an evening never to be forgotten of my year in review.

War of the Worlds plaque in the Red Weed Bar at the War of the Worlds Immersive Experience

A sizzling mini break to Sicily

From alien invasions to erupting volcanoes, May was certainly an action-packed month of my year in review. While not blessed with the best weather, we still managed to catch a bird’s eye view of Etna in full lava flow from our hotel balcony. I was also blown away by the giant succulents which pop up across the island below. Sicily was also my first attempt at snorkelling. And despite the freezing water, it opened up a whole new world of wonder under the sea.

gardens and seating on the island of Isola Bella,, Sicily

A hell-raising afternoon at the hellfire caves

The hell fire caves have been on my list for some time so I grabbed the opportunity to take a peek inside in July. Originally developed as a chalk mine in the 18th century, it didn’t take long for these cavernous tunnels to become a hideaway for the Hellfire Club’s dubious activities. Unsurprisingly, the caves are a brilliant sanctuary on a hot summer’s day. Let your mind run riot as you encounter the surreal River Styx and the ominous Great Banqueting Hall. Only an hour from London, it’s a must-see.

Carved face in the entrance of the hellfire caves

Portsmouth Kite Festival

The Portsmouth Kite Festival is one of the biggest kite festivals in the UK and attracts kite flyers from across the world. Swooping and swirling across the skies, it’s a two-day extravaganza of kite choreography at its best. As a child of the seventies, it was amazing to see the range of kites now available and how easy they are to fly. If you’re looking for an alternative free festival with a twist, this’s the one to put in your calendar.

animal themed kites on display during a kite festival

Discovering Captain Corelli’s Kefalonia

My final mini break of the year was back to Captain Corelli’s Kefalonia – last visited 25 years ago. Blessed with wall-to-wall sunshine this time and warm seas, it was a perfect spot for combining hiking with water sports. I had my first taste of sea kayaking and paddle boarding – both with mixed results. Hiking up to the top of Mount Aenos and snorkelling amidst crowds of translucent fish were two highlights of my year in review.

So what next? 2026 offers a whole new blank canvas for adventures far from the confines of the office. My current wish list includes mud larking on the Thames, a visit to the UK’s only puppet barge and a possible hiking trip to Crete – the home of the Greek legends. What adventures will you end up doing next year? Wishing you an amazing Christmas and the most fun-packed, adventurous 2026!

With Christmas fast approaching, our December salary is in imminent peril. If you’re desperately seeking a cheap present idea for Secret Santa, you can’t go wrong with a Christmas wreath. Costing up to £75.00 in the shops, you can knock one up for less than a tenner. And it can all be done in your lunchbreak. Read on to find out more.

completed Christmas wreath on front door

What is the meaning of hanging a wreath on your door?

Christmas wreaths have been around for a while but where did they come from? A wreath is a symbol of hospitality and celebration. Furthermore, the evergreens which form the base of the wreath represent the enduring cycle of life and nature. Originally the crowns for victors in Ancient Rome, they’re now a symbol of eternal life and protection from evil spirits.

How I discovered Christmas wreath making

I first discovered how to make Christmas wreaths as a volunteer with Horatio’s Garden during COVID. We made the wreaths as a lucrative way of generating much needed funds for the charity. Not being a crafty type, I was blown away by how easy, cheap and fun they are to make.

Planting Horatio’s garden at the spinal injuries unit in Stanmore

How to make a Christmas wreath – step one

The first step in making your wreath is to decide on the components. If you want a purely natural look, most items can be found on your doorstep. All you need is a handy pair of secateurs and a beady eye. Fir tree branches make a solid, evergreen base while the cones make a great finishing touch. Ivy is also in abundance in the UK and provides good, leafy bulk to the wreath. And while prickly, holly and holly berries provide a satisfying pop of colour to finish off your wreath. Finally, you don’t need to haul half your local woodland back with you either. A few branches and sprigs are all that’s needed.

pine cones, holly and ivy for a Christmas wreath

What else do you need to make a wreath?

The essential items you’ll need to purchase are florist twine, available on Amazon for less than a fiver and a bit of ribbon to hang the wreath on the door. That’s it. If you prefer, you can also buy additional ornamentation such as cinnamon sticks, dried orange slices, (which can also make at home), dried berries and fir cones. You can even add a felt animal if you so desire! If you don’t want to make the base yourself, you can buy one from Amazon or other online floristry stockists for around £6.00.

The wreath base – to create or not?

The wreath base is probably the trickiest part of the whole proceedings. You need to find willow branches which have the pliability to bend into the requisite shape. You need to start by carefully weaving together two branches as tightly as you can to create a loose circular shape. Once you have the first two branches done, you need to weave in more branches until the base becomes solid enough to withhold the ornamentation. If like me, you’re not particularly nimble-fingered, you can secure the branches with gardening twine instead. This part of the proceedings can take up to an hour.

If you haven’t got time to create a base from scratch, you can purchase a ready-made one from Amazon for as little as £6.00.

Christmas wreath base made from willow branches

How make a Christmas wreath – step two

Once the base’s in place, the fun begins. Start with the fir branches weave them into the base with the garden twine. Secure the branches as tightly as you can and make sure the twine is bound within the base of the wreath. Next add a layer of ivy to further bulk out the wreath. At this stage, you may need to grab the secateurs and do a tad more pruning or you may wish to leave it fairly wild like mine. Wreaths come in all shapes and sizes so you can let the creative juices run wild.

Ivy and pine added to the base layer of a Christmas wreath

Once the base layers are in place, you can then add the final ornamentation. Use more gardening twine to add the final touches which can include the pine cones, holly berries, orange slices and cinnamon sticks. I decided against the fir cones in the end as they were a bit too fiddly to attach. The final stage is to attach the ribbon to the top of the wreath to create a loop to hang the wreath on.

How long will the wreath last?

Depending on the components, your wreath should last four to six weeks. If you’re making it for a friend, hang it outside as exposure to the outdoors will keep it fresh longer. If this isn’t possible, spritz the leaves daily to keep the foliage fresh. Once Christmas is over, dispose of the natural elements but hang on to the twine and base for next year. That way, you can create a whole new wreath for free next year.

If you’ve never tried making a Christmas wreath before, now’s the time to have a go. It gets you out into nature and away from your screen for two precious hours. Christmas is about being creative about saving that hard-earned salary for much-needed mini breaks abroad next year!

Although published more than 30 years ago, Kefalonia will always be synonymous with Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. And with so much history, beauty and culture, it’s not surprising that it inspired such an epic work of fiction. My first visit to the island coincided with the film release in 2001. But had anything changed?

Flag flying at the summit of Mount Ainos in Kefalonia, Greece

How to get to Kefalonia

As one of Greece’s biggest islands, Kefalonia has its own airport with direct 3-hour flights from the UK. (We flew with Easyjet from Gatwick). Once you’ve whizzed through passport control, the local KTEL bus will take you to Argistoli. If staying in Lixouri, you can take a 20-minute ferry ride from Argistoli across the peninsula.

What is there to see and do in Kefalonia?

Kefalonia is a great place for swimmers, water-sports addicts and those looking for a less frenetic way of life. We stayed at the Lazaratos Hotel, 3km outside Lixouri, for an active holiday combining walking with water sports. While not normally known for hiking, our daily organised walks gave us a great opportunity to get out and explore more of the island.

Scenic view onto Mount Ainos in Kefalonia in the Ionian islands

Day trip to Argistoli

Argistoli is the island’s capital and home to 11,000 residents – the most notable of which are the sea turtles. These reptiles normally rock up for a spot of free fish on the harbour front between 08.00am -10.00am. While this fast-food gorge is frowned upon by the local Conservation volunteers, you’re at least guaranteed a sighting of these amazing creatures here. But expect to be surrounded by a throng of other turtle fans.

sea turtles turning up for food from the fishermen at Argistoli harbour, Kefalonia

Drapano Bridge

Once you’ve met the turtles, wander along the promenade to the Drapano Bridge – a mammoth 700 metre stone bridge that spans the length of the bay. It’s the longest stone bridge over a seawater in the world. And reminded me of the wooden bridge in Lucerne, Switzerland. The waters are remarkably clear here providing a glimpse of crabs, jelly fish and shimmering shoals of fish.

After the bridge, stroll through Lithostroto – an 800-metre-long street bustling with shops, restaurants and cafés. And I was pleased to note – devoid of both tourist hordes and Captain Corelli bars. While there, we stumbled across this umbrella art installation, similar to the Umbrella Sky Project which started off in Portugal and has since been replicated across the world. It’s not clear how long it will remain but its worth a look – it’s located half way down the main street by the ice cream shop on the corner.

umbrella art installation in the main street of Argistoli in September 2025

If you want to stretch your legs a bit further, it’s worth heading to the Saint Theodore lighthouse which is located another hour’s walk from the town centre. The lighthouse was originally built by Charles Napier in 1828 before being destroyed in the infamous 1953 earthquake. It was later rebuilt by a local architect in 1964. The lighthouse comprises an old windmill encased in elegant white pillars which contrast beautifully against the sea behind.

The Saint Theodore Lighthouse in the capital of Kefalonia, Greece

Climbing Mount Ainos – Kefalonia’s highest mountain

The highlight of our trip was undoubtedly climbing to the top of Mount Ainos which is the highest peak in the Ionian islands. Standing at 1,628 metres, it’s on a par with Ben Nevis and provides the most spectacular views. Watching the Greek flag flying defiantly reminded me of the mountain’s presence in Captain Corelli’s Mandolin with Alekos, a silent witness to the horrors unfolding beneath him. Hard to imagine on such a beautiful day.

Flag flying at the top of Mount Ainos in the Ionian islands

You can drive to the transmitter station and then take the gravel path to the summit. But we choose to get out and walk the final 4000 metres through the most beautiful pine-clad forests which provide welcome shade from the sun. However, the temperature can plummet near the summit so ensure to bring extra layers. The final ascent from the transmitter station is fairly steep and requires steady feet across shifting rocky terrain. But it’s well worth all the huffing and puffing as the views from the top can stretch as far as Corfu.

Visit to Assos

Situated on the west coast of the island, Assos is one of the island’s best loved beauty spots. Starting our walk just off the coastal road to Fiskardo, we descend ancient tracks through olive groves to suddenly stumble across the most perfect horse-shoe shaped bay. While still as idyllic as my previous visit, I couldn’t help noticing the swathe of new villas – all with identikit swimming pools – creeping up the hillside above the village.

Hillside view onto Assos horse-shoe shaped harbour

After a welcome dip in the crystal sea, (still warm in September!), we make our way up the hillside to the ruins of a large 16th century castle. The fortress was built by the Venetians to protect against pirates and raids by the Ottomans. After the Venetians, it became a prison during World War II and a prison farm until 1953. But despite featuring in Captain Corelli and being one of the largest castles in Greece, it surprisingly has very few visitors. However, it’s definitely one of the most peaceful picnic spots on the island with stunning views all around.

remains of the old 16th century fortress in Assos – one of the larges castles in Greece

Visit to the ancient Acropolis of Sami

Our final stop was to the bustling port of Sami before heading uphill to the ancient Acropolis which was a former settlement before the Roman invasion. The walk from Sami is full of lush green vegetation with the rich aromas of mint, basil and fennel accompanying each step. While today it’s mainly weathered stones and rubble, the settlement was a force to be reckoned with since Paleolithic times and even had its own currency. Signage and information on the settlement are minimal so it’s worth researching before you visit.

fortress walls of the ancient acropolis in Sami, Kefalonia, Greece

The Acropolis provides another ideal picnic stop with sweeping views down onto Sami. Once you’ve conquered the Acropolis, no visit can be complete without a dip in the turquoise waters of Antisamos beach. Captain Corelli fans will recall this is the scene of the famous explosion and the base for the Italian camp. The beach has the clearest water and is teeming with translucent fish – providing a mecca for snorkellers.

views from the ancient acropolis down onto Sami

My return trip back to Kefalonia did not leave me disappointed. I’m glad to report that it really hasn’t changed all that much. The history, culture and outstanding views make this island stand out with or without its literary fame. I only hope that it won’t be another twenty years before I make it back here again.

Think kites are just for kids? Think again. The Portsmouth Kite Festival attracts kite flyers from across the globe in a two-day extravaganza of inflatable fun. Soaring through the skies, these slinky nylon wisps have the power to mesmerise you for hours.

animal themed kites on display during a kite festival

Where did kite flying begin?

Kite flying is reputed to have originated in China 2000 years ago where they were used to measure distances and test the wind. From there, their popularity quickly spread across Asia to India and Korea before landing in Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Is kite flying still popular today?

Kite flying has come a long way since the clunky creations of my youth. And such is its enduring popularity, there’s now even a National Kite Flying Day. With kites capable of everything from choreography to surfing and buggying, there has been an explosion of interest over the past few decades. Then there’s the creativity that goes into making the actual kites. From giant dogs with wagging tails through to hovering spirits, there’s no end to the ingenuity on display.

Spirit kite by Martin Lester on display at the Portsmouth kite festival

Where are the best places to fly a kite in the UK

There are many top spots in the UK ranging from Hampstead Heath in the heart of London through to Devil’s Dyke in Sussex and Poole Harbour in Dorset. The best places to fly kites are wide, open spaces – exposed to the wind but removed from obstacles such as trees, buildings and power lines. Parks, fields and beaches also all make excellent choices. You’ll need moderate wind conditions of between 5 and 15 miles per hour to get your kite up. But be aware kites are classified as aircraft and you can’t fly them higher than 30 metres or within three miles of an airport / airfield. You’re also not allowed to fly kites from pavements or along main thoroughfares.

whale kite on display at the Portsmouth kite festival

What happens at the Portsmouth Kite Festival?

The festival is now in its 33rd year and is one of the biggest in the UK. It’s held on the 26/27 July on Southsea common – a 20-minute walk from Portsmouth Harbour and Southsea train station. It attracts kite flyers from across the world who perform to a full itinerary on both days. Entry to the festival is free and includes a fun fair, live music and plenty of food and drink stalls.

kite display area at the Portsmouth Kite Festival

What is kite choreography?

Before the festival, I’m ashamed to admit that I’d never heard of kite choreography. But it did remind me of the amazing dancing poly bags at the London Mime Festival. Also known as synchronized kiting or team flying, kite choreography is the skill of flying one or sometimes multiple kites in time to carefully choreographed music to create appealing manoeuvres in the sky. At one extreme, this ranged from one kite flyer managing three kites through to a mega team finale – a mass synchronised flight of four-line kites featuring up to 20 kite flyers.

The music varies from thumping techno through to gentle classical strains with the kites soaring and swooping in perfect time to each musical genre. It’s best to position yourself at the far end of the ground, near the promenade to get the best view of the action. If luggage allows, bring a fold up chair to rest the pins and avoid neck strain from peering up at the skies. An umbrella is also great for sun protection.

kite choreography display in the shape of a heart at the Portsmouth kite festival

Kite choreography at the Portsmouth Kite Festival

While I loved all the performances, my favourite display was the Decorators – a team of six kite flyers who create amazing, synchronised symmetry in the sky with their precision manoeuvres. You can see a video of one of their 2024 routines here. Although seemingly effortless, it takes months of practice to produce such captivating results. From teams of six to one-man bands – Karl Russell also wowed the audience by managing three different kites simultaneously. Who knew that this was even possible?

Other kite festivals to visit after the Portsmouth Kite Festival

If Portsmouth whets your appetite for more, you can also visit kite festivals in Lytham St-Anns, Filey, Maidenhead and Cornwall. And once you’ve satisfied your UK kite cravings, head overseas to the world’s largest kite festival on the Danish island of Fano. This international festival draws tens of thousands of kite flyers from across the globe. You can see the jaw-dropping extent of the festival on this link.

As a first timer at a kite festival, I’d no idea what to expect. And I was amazed by the variety of kites on display and all the things they are now capable of. My rainbow delta kite is now firmly on my wish list and who knows…maybe I’ll be back here again with kite in tow next year.

Do holidays secretly fill you with dread? While travel is viewed as a peak highlight of our existence, holidays can also provoke huge anxiety. As we step into the unknown, our minds whirr with a thousand different catastrophic scenarios. If this is you, read on to find out how to conquer the angst and step into a thrilling adventure.

skeleton sculpture grimacing at the Churt Sculpture Park near Farnham

Decide what sort of holiday would suit you best

If you’re new to travel or feel particularly anxious, think about what holiday would suit you best. You could stick with a short break close to home or within an easy flight time. The simpler the trip – the less to manage. If you’d rather not do the organising, you could go with an organised group where airport transfers, meals and your daily activities and excursions are all taken care of for you. There are organised holidays to suit all tastes from informal travel meetup groups like the one below through to coach tours and even cruises.

Hiking across Oxwich beach in the Gower Peninsula, South Wales

Manage your expectations

When I used to work in travel – I learned the mantra that the holiday business is about selling dreams. All our hopes are pinned on those two precious weeks of technicolour freedom. But sadly, like life, holidays don’t always live up to what we expect. To avoid undue stress and disappointment, keep your expectations in perspective. Some things will go well and others won’t. And that’s just life! Focus on the positives and remember that no matter what we’re faced with, we always adapt. Remember things could be worse – you could be at work.

Every cloud has a silver lining – sunshine and clouds, Kew Gardens

Managing travel anxiety 2 weeks before departure

Once the initial euphoria of the booking confirmation has worn off, doubts start to creep in. Usually around two weeks before you depart. Remember that fear and excitement are two sides of the same coin. What makes travel so stimulating yet terrifying is the unknown – and there’s only so much you can prepare for. But here’s what you can do:

Packing

Packing is undoubtedly one of the most stress-inducing parts of the holiday. If flying to your destination, baggage size will take up all of your mental capacity. Will you manage with hand baggage? Or would you prefer the peace of mind that comes with a suitcase in the hold? Think about the time of year, the resort and the type of activities you’ll be doing. If it’s a hiking holiday, there’s no point bringing smart evening wear. You might also have to factor in dramatic changes in terrain and weather such as an excursion to Mount Etna in Sicily.

Some travellers swear by the 5-4-3-2-1 packing rule which pares down your wardrobe to the strict essentials. Remember that packing can become an endless obsession if you let it. Your wallet, passport, mobile and medicines are the essentials – most other things can be purchased once you get there.

espadrilles hung up outside a shoe shop in Soller, Mallorca

Prepare for the things you can control

When thinking about your holiday, do you dwell on every scenario that could go wrong? While mentally draining, catastrophising does help you become an expert in contingency planning. Fretting about a lost passport? Ensure you have a paper copy with you. The same goes for your hotel address and phone number, visa and travel insurance policy details. These simple steps can help you to feel more in control. Similarly, if you fret about health problems, get any vaccinations booked in well in advance. If you’re an over-thinke, you’ll also be the first to pack mosquito repellent, travel sickness tablets and sunscreen.

Mule carrying luggage on a hike to Mount Toubkhal in the Atlas Mountains

How to avoid financial travel anxiety

While holidays should feel liberating, they do come at a cost. So research your destination well in advance – particularly if eating out. Barbados and Switzerland are two examples of countries where you might want to explore self-catering options. Also, factor in the cost of any must-do excursions where you might want to splash the cash for those once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Setting a budget in advance of your trip will go a long way to easing any financial worries while away. To make your money stretch further, consider taking a credit card that can be used abroad for free such as the Halifax Clarify Credit Card.

Close up of black cod miso with rice and spring onions accompanied by pork and vegetable soup

How to cope with anxiety when leaving home

Do you sometimes believe that you’ve left the door unlocked when you leave for work? Locking your house up for an extended period can increase these worries exponentially. One trick is to take photos of every area of the house which might later trigger you on the way to the airport. In my case, I photograph the taps in the kitchen and bathroom, the cooker, the shower cord and the plug points. Then if those intrusive thoughts pop up – usually just as I’m getting on the tube, I can reassure myself with the photographic evidence.

statue of man holding his head in despair at Soller train station in Mallorca

How to cope with a fear of flying

While the journey to the airport can be the worst bit for some – for others, stepping on the plane is when the blood pressure peaks. Again, preparation here is key. Pre-flight, you can read Soar – the breakthrough treatment for the fear of flying by Tom Bunn or Cockpit Confidential by Patrick Smith. In the weeks leading up to your holiday, it’s also worth using visualisations to imagine yourself into a calm and collected state. (The mind can’t tell the difference between imagining and the real thing so you can trick it into submission with this nifty technique).

view from the window seat on an Easyjet flight to Mallorca

Once on the flight, continue with the visualisations and add deep breathing with your hand on your chest to further calm the nervous system. Some people also find it reassuring to consult Flight Radar 24 which continually tracks 200,000 flights daily to highlight how safe flying actually is.

While stress is part and parcel of the holiday experience, there are many steps you can take to alleviate your worst fears. If we can break through the barriers which are all in our mind, there’s a whole world out there waiting to be discovered. Never let travel anxiety win!

Seeking an underground adventure close to the capital? Well, you’ve come to the right place. The Hellfire caves are spooky, spectacular and unsettling in equal measure. The endless tunnels reveal a series of bizarre sights which beg more questions than they answer. Read on if you dare.

Carved face in the entrance of the hellfire caves

Where are Hellfire Caves located?

The Hellfire Caves are located above West Wycombe village at the southern edge of the Chiltern Hills, (HP14 3AH). So if you’re arriving by public transport, take the train to High Wycombe station and then hop on the X40 bus to West Wycombe. While there’s limited parking at the caves, you’ll find a 200-space car park located a five-minute walk away (HP14 3AP).

What is the story behind the Caves?

The Caves date back to the 18th century and originate from an open-cast quarry which was used to mine chalk. Following harvest failures from 1748-50, the quarry was extended by Sir Francis Dashwood, (the then Chancellor of the Exchequer) who wanted to increase local employment by building a new road to connect West Wycombe and High Wycombe.

The construction of the Hellfire Caves

The caves took six years to construct with around 100 labourers toiling from sunrise to early evening. And for this back-breaking work, they received the princely sum of one shilling a day. But why did the extension include such intricate passageways leading to an ominously large room? An eccentric, aristocratic design quirk of the time – or were there more devious motives at play?

The Hellfire Club

The Hellfire Club was a scurrilous gentleman’s club. It was run by and for aristocrats, many of whom were members of Parliament. And these members who included Benjamin Franklin – were united in their love of debauchery. In addition to excessive drinking, gambling and carousing, the group also mocked religious institutions – using a devil as their figurehead. Their original HQ at Medmenham Abbey was swiftly transferred to the Caves after their completion in 1752. (A full members list is displayed on a plaque inside the caves.)

wax work representations of two of the hellfire club members

What’s it like inside the Hellfire Caves?

The eerie entrance at first resembles a gothic church before you quickly descend into a labyrinth of endless tunnels and chambers. It’s an excellent refuge from the summer heatwave. And thankfully there’s plenty of headroom for tall folk. In total, the caves take around one hour to walk around depending on visitor numbers. However, beware those who suffer from impaired vision or claustrophobia.

The tunnels replicate a vaulted nave and branch off into smaller chambers that exhibit a startling range of curiosities. The most striking of which is a waxwork figure of Paul Whitehead, the former secretary of the Hellfire Club, who bizarrely donated his heart to Sir Francis Dashwood after his death.

Wax model of Paul Whitehead at the hellfire caves in West Wycombe

Originally placed in an urn in the adjacent Dashwood Mausoleum below, the heart was reputedly stolen by an Australian soldier and is still missing today. The urn is now on display next to the waxwork of Paul, who is said to still roam the caves in search of his heart.

View onto the Dashwood Mausoleum in West Wycombe

The Banqueting Hall

The centrepiece of the caves is undoubtedly the Banqueting Hall which measures 14 metres in diameter in a compass-style design. It has four symbolic antechambers referred to as monk’s cells – frequently used for illicit liaisons. In a show of shameless, machoism – linear engravings beneath the alcoves attest to notches on the bedpost. Unsurprisingly perhaps, the men would dress as monks; the women as nuns and Dashwood himself would turn up as a Priest. Prior to any shenanigans, lavish feasts would take place on a large refectory table where liveried footmen would be on hand to dish up using pristine glass and silverware.

Statue behind bars in an alcove in the banqueting room.

The River Styx

Just when it couldn’t get any more bizarre, the River Styx rears up before you. Like Wooky hole on steroids, this natural stream represents the mythological boundary between the living world and the underworld. In keeping with tradition, Hellfire Club patrons would cross this stream to reach the Inner Temple to access the Club’s most mysterious rituals.

A replica of the River Styx in the Hellfire Caves in Buckinghamshire

Filming at the Hellfire Caves

Beetlejuice, Silent Witness, Midsomer Murders and Count Dracula are just a few of the Cave’s most notable productions. But not to be outdone, Most Haunted, also did a night-long vigil here. Swooping bats, babies crying and stones hitting gates are just a few of the experiences reported to be all in a night’s work. In addition to further paranormal investigations, today, the caves also host corporate events, birthday celebrations and weddings.

If you’re looking for a truly memorable day out underground, the Hellfire caves are an amazing discovery. The twisting tunnels lead you ever deeper into a vortex of Temples, Chambers and Banqueting halls which let your imagination run riot. Perhaps it’s best we don’t know all that went on here but it’s intrigue will live on for many decades to come.

Admission to the Caves is £9.50 for adults.

Thrust into the spotlight by White Lotus, Taormina is Sicily’s sizzling destination du jour. Perched on a hillside overlooking the mighty Mount Etna, it’s streets are filled with outdoor cafes, designer shops, bustling bars and blooming apartment terraces. Its hair-raising, vertical staircases are not for the faint-hearted but lead to amazing discoveries around every corner.

twilight view from Mount Etna from the central square in Taormina

Where is Taormina located?

Taormina is located on the east side of the island and is easily accessed from Catania airport. You can take a 7-Euro bus ride from directly outside the airport to the main bus terminal. It takes approximately ninety minutes – depending on traffic and local pick ups. Those suffering from motion sickness may want to prepare in advance for its final 20-minute hair-raising ascent.

Where to stay in Taormina?

Taormina’s not short on hotels. While the San Domenica Palace, (of White Lotus fame), may be out of reach, there are options to suit all budgets. You can whizz between the beach and town centre for 6 Euros per person. Or you can choose to pant up the many winding steps which can take anywhere between 30 and 60 minutes depending on fitness levels. If mobility is an issue, choose your hotel location carefully here.

sea views from the top of Taormina, Sicily

Be aware that the beach area of Taormina has far fewer amenities and lacks proper pavements – pedestrians are definitely not a priority in Sicily. We opted for the hotel Mediterranee located on the highest tier of the town. But what it lacked in modern décor, it more than made up for in views of the coastline and Mount Etna. Sitting out on the balcony on our first evening, we had jaw-dropping views of Etna’s lava flow just two weeks before it’s most recent dramatic eruption.

What is there to do in Taormina?

Taormina has plenty of options to suit different tastes. From hiking to snorkelling through to exploring more than 2000 years of history. Film and TV buffs can also enjoy a White lotus or Godfather tour.
Where to eat and drink in Taormina?

Taormina has a vast array of restaurants and bars – easily absorbing its daily visitors. (Be prepared for crowds particularly from mid to late afternoon.) Our foodie highlights included afternoon coffee and cannoli at La Pignolata and an early evening Aperol Spritz at Bam Bar. However apart from the amazing gelato, the food was a little bland for our tastes. Iceberg lettuce is a staple of most salads and there are limited options for vegetarians. Meat eaters fare better here with a good selection of meat-based pasta, fish and red meat. The wine though is a crowd pleaser for everyone and well worth indulging in.

Hiking to the village of Castelmola

For active types – a hike to Castelmola, reputedly Italy’s prettiest village, is well worth the effort of endless stair-climbing. Huffing and puffing amongst darting lizards and precariously hanging cacti, the end destination was well worth the climb. Perched above Taormina, Castelmola provides sweeping views as far as mainland Italy. Amidst the gluttonous gelato shops and street cafes, the Church of Madona Della Rocca is a surprising highlight.

Church of Madonna Della Rocca

Constructed mainly from rock, the church was originally built on the site of a cave. According to legend, a young shepherd boy sheltering from a storm in the cave saw a vision of the Virgin Mary here. This sighting reputedly led to the Church’s construction in 1640. It’s low ceilings and rock foundations give it a surprisingly warm and intimate feel – in contrast to the overwhelm I often experience in other churches.

Before taking the long descent back to Taormina, it’s worth stopping for a coffee at the San Giorgio café to take in a last look at those sweeping coastal views.

San Giorgio cafe bar in Castelmola above Taormina in Sicily

Taormina’s Greek amphitheatre

History buffs won’t be disappointed by Taormina’s ancient Greek Theatre. Founded in the third century, it was originally constructed for Greek musicals before taking on gladiatorial battles in Roman times. It’s Sicily’s’ second largest theatre, after Syracuse, and still today is used as the backdrop for symphonies, operas and ballets. Entry fee is 14 Euros per person. Seemingly, wherever you walk in Taormina, Greek mosaics and Roman ruins pop up in every direction – alluding to this town’s ancient past.

Beach life

While most beaches in Sicily are public, there are many areas reserved for private use only. We used the facilities of our sister hotel free of charge which included sun loungers and towels. Use of such facilities can cost up to 20 Euros per person elswhere. While not beach worshippers, these amenities allowed us to try out our newly acquired snorkels. Sicily is blessed with clear seas and abundant marine life – making it a great destination for both beginner and more advanced snorkellers. We visited in May and found the sea to still be a tad chilly and in hindsight, would have booked later in the year.

views onto the sea from Isola Bella island, Sicily

This was my first time snorkelling, so I clung like a limpet to the shoreline. But thanks to the abundant rocky outcrops, I could still follow numerous scholes of fish. You can book snorkelling excursions around Isola Bella where you can spot sea bream and if you’re lucky octopus. Trips last for an hour and cost 40 Euros per person – booked via the local Diving Centre. However, there are many other snorkelling trips to choose from as well as pleasure boat excursions and dolphin watching cruises.

Visit to Isola Bella

No stay in Taormina is complete without a visit to Isola Bella. The island was gifted to the town in 1806 by Ferdinand of Bourbon, the King of Sicily. Some decades later, the island was purchased by the rich English noblewoman, Florence Trevelyan. Florence set to work planting tropical vegetation and constructing the island’s first house. After her death, the island passed through several ownerships before being completely abandoned in 1982 when it was targeted by vandals. It was finally declared an asset of artistic and historical heritage in 1984 and was later purchased by the Department of Cultural Heritage in 1990.

You need to roll up your trousers to visit as it involves wading through knee-deep water. But once on the other side, you encounter a tranquil oasis of lush vegetation. Cacti and giant succulents abound as you walk through a series of rooms connected by internal and external staircases, vaults and secret passageways – all constructed from rock. There’s a huge sense of peace and seclusion in this rock hideaway, surrounded by the gently lapping waters of the Mediterranean. The visit takes around forty-five minutes and costs 6 Euros per person.

If you’re fit and mobile, love culture and don’t mind active volcanos – then Taormina is for you. It’s a vibrant town filled with fun and adventure even if you don’t end up staying in White Lotus style at the San Domenico Palace.
