Don't let your office chair give you health problems

2012-02-13T07:09:00.000-08:00

Sound like an exaggeration? Maybe not. According to the Back Institute, about nine out of ten adults experience back pain at some point in their life, and five out of ten working adults have back pain every year. The pain felt in the back usually originates from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine. The pain can often be divided into neck pain, upper back pain, lower back pain or tailbone pain. Chances are, you are part of the 90 percent.

What's causing so many people to suffer?

Though we can't blame all backaches on office chairs, they are sure to be a huge contributor. Consider this. With the advancements in the technology industry, more Americans have desk jobs then every before and accordingly a University of Arizona study, 83 percent are eating both meals and snacks at their desks. Even those without desk are still spending personal time at a computer. What are people doing after school and work? They are emailing, shopping online, IMing and visiting the latest popular sites such as Facebook, Youtube , Twitter and Google. More people are getting their news and weather right from their desks than watching the 11 o'clock news. With Amazon and Netflix, we are now watching our movies and catching up on our favorite tv shows right on our computer. Let's face it, between work and home entertainment, we are spending a lot of time in our chairs!

Unfortunately some are not just suffering from the average backache. May need to have some type of therapy or even surgery to correct their problems. How can you help prevent back pain? One thing you can do is make sure to choose the ergonomic office chair that's the right for you.

Ergonomic Office Chairs

There is no longer the "one size fits all" office chair. They come in a variety of styles and sizes. What's most important when choosing a chair? It's essential that your feet are resting comfortably on the ground. The seat height and seat depth are the most important features that you need to pay attention to when buying an office chair. You want the backrest of your chair to actually support your back. If you are having to scoot up so your feet can touch the floor, you are not taking advantage of the back support your chair can offer. Correct posture is very important and the armrests play a big factor. We recommend you choose a chair that has adjustable armrest so your arms are at an even level with your keyboard. The chair's back angle is also important. Not all people sit comfortably at a 90 degree angle. A lot of ergonomic chairs have a back angle adjustment so your feel supported while at your desk. Take these factors into consideration when buying your office chair and you should sit comfortably for hours. Can a new office chair take away your back pain? Maybe. Can it prevent pain? Absolutely!

Office Chairs: More Eco Friendly Than Ever Before

2011-11-11T16:52:00.000-08:00

With the increased knowledge of our negative effect on the earth, we have learned that energy efficiency, pollution prevention, substitution and maximization of recycled products are an absolute must. Many people are looking for ways that they can personally have a positive impact on our environment and are interested in purchasing products that can help them do just that. We are proud to say that we offer many office chairs that meet the new environmental standards.

Many office chair manufacturers have now recognized that they too can make a difference by coming up with alternatives in their manufacturing and shipping processes. By coming up with new ways they have been able to substantially decrease their direct effect on the ozone and water supplies. With changes to recycled materials used in the packing process and new designs containing recycled materials such as fabrics and leathers, they have been able to dramatically decrease waste.

GREENGUARD is becoming a renown company that certifies manufacturers who's products meet the stringent chemical emission requirements. Products undergo both annual re-certification and quarterly quality monitoring tests to maintain this elite credential. They provide participants with marketing support training as well as list them on their website to help introduce them to users looking for products that meet their standards. Manufacturers whose products achieve GREENGUARD Certification gain the privilege of using the GREENGUARD mark; a great tool for marketing their products.

We are proud to say that we sell office chairs and furniture from many manufacturers that have made the choice to follow these guidelines. For example, OFM, a Greenguard certified company, has made advances in updating their company by selling eco friendly products as well as making changes in their working environment. They recently installed a solar panel system on the roof of their main headquarters in North Carolina and are proud to say that they are now carbon-neutral and have been certified as a New Renewable Energy Facility. Nice job!

Last year they modified their invoicing, order processing and shipping methods resulting in cutting their paper consumption in half. They have also changed all of their lighting from 400 watt metal halide exterior high bay lights to 200 watt induction exterior high bay lights, cutting the power needed in half.

Global Total Office is also Greenguard certified and has an ongoing policy to do their part by using cardboard packing that utilizes 80% recycled material. They have created a non-hazardous powder-coat paint process that reclaims up to 99% of overspray with minimal discharge to the environment. They have also completely eliminated the use of CFC's and HCFC's in all their manufacturing processes to protect the ozone layer. Many of their chairs have an option of fabric that is constructed of recycled polyester.

You can view our office chairs made by those manufacturers that are Greenguard Certified by clicking below:

Eco-Friendly Leather Leather Chairs

We have now added to our list of office chairs, Eco-Leather Executive Chairs. Many do not realize that leather actually has an impact on the environment using hazardous materials in the tanning and manufacturing process. Eco-friendly chairs do not use the restricted chemicals, such as banned azo dyes, PCP, chrome VI, formaldehyde. They are made from leather scraps and recycled leather with a material backing but still have a soft feel and the look of full hide genuine leather chairs. If doing your part in saving the planet is important to you, you might consider purchasing an office chair made by a manufacturer that shares in your concerns and are voluntarily doing their part to decrease the negative effects on the environment.

Don't Let This Happen to You

2011-10-27T08:06:00.000-07:00

<a href="http://www.linkedtube.com/j2siEbkNUog?0b31c8d7a000b4c247be860476f47aa9.htm">LinkedTube</a>

Ouch! That's what we said when we first saw this video.
It seems possible that this chair may have already been broken or possibly switched out by a mean spirited co worker? Either way, the video got us thinking about the importance of taking your environment and intended use into consideration when looking to purchase chairs for your office or home. Notice that the video makes reference to the actor as a "Dispatcher". Dispatchers typically spend long hours sitting in their chairs. Emergency workers and other call centers are usually staffed 24/7 which means the office chairs see constant use. Therefore if the chair in the video was under constant use and not rated for it, an accident like this is possible.

Most office chairs are rated for a 40 hour work week and users up to 250 lbs. maximum. Anything over these amounts will void the chairs warranty, cause the chair to prematurely wear out and eventually break.

The solution for anyone who needs a chair that can stand up to constant use is a 24 hour chair. 24 hour chairs are available in a variety of different styles and sizes and from different manufacturers. Each 24/7 chair is specially designed to withstand the intensive use environment of around the clock staffing. 24 hour chairs can be a bit more expensive than a regular office chair but the justification is in the materials, craftsmanship and the fact that you will purchase less chairs over time since 24 hour chairs are designed and rated for intensive use.

Office Chairs Unlimited has a dedicated section of 24 hour intensive use office chairs. We feature dispatch chairs in fabric, vinyl or leather upholstery with a variety of ergonomic adjustment options to choose from. Our 24 hour office chair section also includes executive chairs and two 24 hour drafting stools. Most of our 24/7 chairs can even handle a larger weight capacity.

If your work environment calls for a chair that can withstand constant use take a look at Office Chairs Unlimited s large selection of 24 hour chairs. We feature a low price guarantee plus free shipping to your home or office on every chair we sell.

Heavy Duty Office Chairs Evolve in Style and Comfort

2011-09-08T12:07:00.000-07:00

It wasn't that long ago when a heavy duty office chair was easy to pick out in an office chair line-up. They were the chairs whose upholstery didn't quite match the rest of the office decor or the ones whose styling was reminiscent of a bad 70's cop show.

Thankfully, times have changed. Today's heavy duty office chairs or big and tall chairs as they are often referred to, are offered in virtually any style and available in almost every type of upholstery that standard office chairs are from fabric, leather, vinyl and even breathable screen mesh.

Style and upholstery are not the only advancements in larger office seating, ergonomic adjustments and contours are also being more readily incorporated into these popular chairs. In addition to the standard seat height and swivel adjustments, chairs like the OFM™247 offer tilt, seat depth, back height and feature a weight capacity rating of up to 400 lbs.

If you feel you don't need all the gadgets of the OFM™ chair the Safco® Vue™ is a mesh back ergonomic big and tall chair that supports up to 500 lbs. and features built in lumbar support, seat height, swivel and more. These are only two diverse examples of how the industry is expanding. For more examples just type heavy duty office chairs in Google and you will be amazed by the number of results.

Keep in mind that these chairs are not for everyone. They are specially crafted chairs that feature more robust construction with stronger frames, bases and cylinders and generally include larger proportioned seat and backrest cushions for greater comfort. A person under 6' tall may find themselves swimming in a big or tall chair and those who weigh considerably less than 250 lbs. may feel as though the chairs cushions are stiff or uncomfortable.

Manufactures are beginning to realize that the market for reliable, sturdy and stylish higher weight capacity office seating is fast growing. The proof is in the new models that are entering the market on an almost monthly basis. For those who find themselves as qualified candidates for a big and tall chair, a trip to your local office furniture store may produce limited results. Often times the web is the best place to compare and price a larger offering of big and tall chairs. After only a few minutes of research I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the variety of chairs available with the features you want and in a style or upholstery that compliments instead of distracts from your home or office decor.

5 Common Office Chair Features - Explained

2011-06-16T09:21:00.000-07:00

Most of the office chairs available today include multiple ergonomic and support features or functional improvements as compared to office chairs of the past. The top of the line ergonomic computer or task chairs built today, may seem to have more levers or adjustments than a small plane. If you happen to own the Piper 4000 office task chair this article is not for you, you may want to locate your manual for additional help locking the tray table in the upright position.

For those who own or are looking to purchase a base to mid range office chair in the future, I hope this list assists you in your selection and/or operation of your office chair.

#1 Pneumatic Seat Height Adjustment:

Most office, computer, task, ergonomic and even executive chairs offer this function. Quite simply this describes how the seat height is raised or lowered. A pneumatic cylinder is attached to the chairs mechanism located under the seat cushion. This cylinder allows for quick and easy adjustment throughout a specified height range. This adjustment is often accomplished through the use of a paddle or lever located underneath the seat cushion on either the right or left side of the chair.

#2 Tilt with Adjustable Tilt Tension:

Manufacturers may sometimes list tilt and tilt tension adjustment as two separate functions. I feel that they are closely related and the fact that you almost can't have one without the other, to be reason to treat them as one feature. Most types of task, computer and executive chairs feature tilt with adjustable tilt tension. Tilt is what enables the user to rock or recline backwards to a set limit defined by the chairs mechanism or control plate. The tilt tension adjustment is modified by turning a usually large round knob found underneath the seat toward the front of the chair. (Some chair manufacturers are moving the tilt tension control to a lever or dial elsewhere on the chair, but most are still located in the front.) The tilt tension knob will increase or decrease the amount of force needed to make the chair rock or recline backward. Usually, several turns of the tilt tension knob are required to loosen or tighten the tension to a noticeable level.

#3 Tilt Lock:

This function sounds easy but you would be surprised at how many people have difficulty with this, and it's not always their fault. One of the problems with tilt lock is that not all manufacturers use the same lever or put the lever in the same area to control this function leading to various ways a chairs tilt lock adjustment could be modified. Consulting your chairs owners manual is always the best practice to help familiarize your self with your chairs specific controls. In general some manufactures may use levers or paddles like the ones used for seat height adjustment to control tilt lock, or many use a single lever or rod that needs pushed in or pulled out to lock or unlock the chairs tilt. Usually, once a chair is locked in a tilt position it cannot be unlocked until the user reclines or tilts back a few degrees further relieving pressure from the lock bar or pin so that the chair may be reset back to the original position. Tilt lock is also used to lock out tilt completely when the chair is in the upright position.

#4 (2-to-1) Synchro Tilt:

A lot of computer and task chairs offer this feature. Basically, this function allows the backrest to recline twice as fast as the seat cushion or at a 2-to-1 ratio, this allows the user to recline while keeping their seat relatively level to the floor instead of the traditional "rocking chair" type recline.

#5 Back Height Adjustment:

Many computer, task, ergonomic and drafting chairs now offer this feature. Back height adjustment allows the user to position the backrest's lumbar support area within a fixed range for customized support. Back height adjustment is often modified by turning a know located on the backrest stem or frame. Once this knob is loosened the backrest can be raised or lowered to the desired position, then the knob is tightened to hold position. Ratchet back height adjustment is also becoming more popular with some newer models of office chairs, this eliminates the use of a knob and is set or controlled by simply raising or lowering the backrest to the desired level and then locked into position by use of the ratchet style frame stem.

Of course there are many other chair functions available on the market and depending on your personal preference, daily amount of time spent in a chair and your intended use you may need or want an office chair with more ergonomic controls or features. If so, please follow the link at the bottom of the page for more information and a large selection of available ergonomic office chairs. Your office chair is your home away from home, so proper support and comfort are a must.

Buying A Used Office Chair May Cost You

2011-05-20T08:00:00.000-07:00

I recently read that more and more people are purchasing used office chairs to save money. Being in the office furniture business myself, I was intrigued by this and with a little research found that in fact a lot of individuals and businesses were shopping at second-hand stores or using mediums such as Craigslist or local classifieds ads to furnish their offices.

It makes sense in a down economy to tighten our spending habits in every area possible, yet when shopping for office furniture, you need to be aware that one of the key components of most manufacture warranties is that they're usually non-transferable. If you can't prove that you're the original owner, the warranty may not apply to you.

Now depending on your situation this may not be that big of a deal. If you just need a task chair for your child's bedroom or a workbench area you may have in the basement or garage go ahead, save some money! But if you're actually going to use that bargain beauty for work, and plan on sitting in it for eight or more hours a day, you really need to think about your decision.

Today's office chairs are constantly evolving in design, fit-ment, ergonomic controls and customizable options, plus studies show that many office workers spend more time in their chair than they do in their own bed! Again, I realize we all need to pinch pennies and watch our spending but at what cost? A worn out office chair can be dangerous at worst and uncomfortable at best. A used chair can aggravate existing back problems, cause premature fatigue or simply break and cause one to fall over or out of their chair.

I'm not saying that all used office furniture is of poor quality, there are several reputable companies in the market that clean or re-condition lightly used office furniture and resell at a much lower than new price. I'm certainly not trying to bash Craigslist or the classified ads, I use them both regularly--what I'm saying is this, when it comes to selecting an office chair that you will be using on a routine basis for work or research, your health and comfort should be your main considerations. Even If you have to pay a little extra.

A quick internet search for an office task chairs or mesh back chairs will give you hundreds of results. There are also many online retailers competing for your business, so prices are lower now than they have been in years and many retailers even offer free shipping. So with a little research you may find a new and supportive office chair for a great price and in a lot less time than you may have spent searching the want ads.
