Office 2010: Web Apps Review

Office fanatics are closely watching the development of Office 2010 web apps, which is Microsoft Office's answer to GoogleDocs, which allows sharing of a document among multiple users (for those unfamiliar, this is referred to as "online collaboration").

Google Docs, at the time of this article, allows you to see a history of "revisions." This is a useful feature if you have multiple users putting in data into one document. To do the same with the desktop version of Microsoft Office involves either third-party software (such as HyperOffice), or the even Microsoft Sharepoint.

Web Apps however does allow collaboration. More will be said in a later review. But feel free to try it out for yourself.

PCPro has a brilliant and brief review on Microsoft Office 2010 web apps.

Microsoft is a little late to the game of providing online office software applications at competitive pricing (in Google's case, FREE!, can't beat that). Is Office 2010 Web Apps their way of catching up? Probably.

It could also be their way of preventing loss of a customer base that is moving towards the growing trend of document creation and use exclusively online. Why would someone buy Office 2010 if all they need office software for is the very basics in functionality?

Then again, there is always its ever-looming free desktop software counter-part, OpenOffice.org

Leaked! - Free Office software upgrade for some MS faithful?

One of Microsoft's employees coughed up great information too early regarding their Office 2007 user benefits.

Microsoft employee Charles Van Heusen claimed in his now deleted blog post that customers that buy "a qualifying Office 2007 product (with or without a PC) from an authorized reseller between" March 5th & September 30th, 2010, and activates it by Sept. 30th, will get a FREE upgrade to Office 2010!

The free upgrade will be offered in the form of an online download, but it looks like Microsoft will offer "a DVD for a fee." The fee was not specified. However the upgrade request must be made by October 31st, 2010, which does not give users a lot of time to respond.

Since Google cached the deleted post, here is where you can find the information.

PCPro.co.uk has some details on this development.

The question remains how Microsoft will respond to this plan coming into public view too early. Will they perhaps widen the timeline available to customers?

Microsoft Works is Dead, Long Live Microsoft Office Starter 2010

I'm sure I'm not the only one to have been frustrated with a new computer showing up with Microsoft Works. I'm sure you've questioned the very logic behind its existence! Microsoft is catching up and by next spring, all new computers will be coming with a "Starter" edition of Microsoft Office 2010 which includes scaled down versions of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

A blogger for Microsoft says, "Office Starter 2010 will provide new PC owners with immediate exposure to the Office 2010 experience on new PCs right out of the box," in their effort to streamline user's experience with Microsoft Office 2010 and 2007.

Sounds too good to be true? In a way it is. The Microsoft 2010 Starter edition will be supported by ads. For many users however, having ads will be a small sacrifice for having a standard Office Software application like Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. At least that's what the expectation is of new PC-buyers in Spring 2009.

On a less serious note, presenter Don McMillan talks about how NOT to use PowerPoint. This video is humorous, but does have a real message about clear communication. I do disagree with his thoughts about Courier New font though.

Office 2010: Upcoming Screen-Capture Features

Redmond Pie had a great post about a Screen-Capture feature in Office 2010. This is certainly a feature you can look forward to that will make illustrating your documents so much easier! All you will need to do is press a "Screen Capture" button, and then select the area of your screen that you want to capture as an image.

What this feature also includes is the ability store previously used images. What you then have is a library of screen-capture images.

Office 2003 and older: How to Open Newer Office 2007 Files

Perhaps someone has sent you a file they made with Office 2007, a Document, Powerpoint, or Excel file. And you can't open the file they've sent simply because your Office version is older (that is, you either have Office 2000, Office 2002/XP or Office 2003).

Microsoft was kind enough to release a program that you'll have to download and install to enable you to open the newer Office 2007 files. This video Tutorial will show you how.

To be able to follow this tutorial, you will need to:

Have Windows 2000 (service pack 4) OR Windows XP OR Windows Vista
Microsoft Office 2000 (service pack 3)
Microsoft Office 2002/XP (service pack 3)
Microsoft Office 2003 (service pack 1)
MAC users go to this page and click "Download the Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.0.2 package now"
