/>

OutKast and the Atlanta Falcons have teamed up to mark 30 years of "ATLiens" with a limited-edition collection that blends Southern hip-hop history with Atlanta football pride. Launched on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the seven-piece set includes a letterman jacket, a '96 jersey, two hoodies, a T-shirt, a hat and a mini helmet, all in black and neon green — a color scheme that nods to the album's futuristic, otherworldly artwork and to the Falcons' modern identity at the same time.

The collection is available through OutKast's store and through Fanatics, New Era, Mitchell & Ness and Riddell, giving fans several ways to get the pieces whether they shop online or look for the brands behind each item. It will also be sold in person at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday, October 25, when the Falcons host the San Francisco 49ers. That game-day presence turns the anniversary into a live event rather than a simple merchandise drop, placing the collaboration in the stadium where Atlanta fans gather each week.

The timing is deliberate: Big Boi is set to perform at halftime of Sunday's game, bringing the music itself to the center of the celebration. A halftime performance by one half of OutKast gives the collection a soundtrack and a moment fans can share in person, linking the clothes on sale around the stadium to the artist who helped make the album a landmark. For longtime listeners, it is a reminder that OutKast's story has always been tied to Atlanta, from its neighborhoods and studios to its biggest stages.

"ATLiens," the duo's second album, was released on August 27, 1996, on LaFace/Arista. It reached No. 1 on the U.S. Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and went double platinum, confirming that the adventurous follow-up to their debut was not a detour but a breakthrough. Its space-age themes, sharp lyricism and distinctive production helped define an era of Southern rap, and its influence can still be heard in artists who mix regional identity with bold, imaginative sounds.

The Falcons collection also follows an earlier OutKast collaboration this month with Waffle House, another Atlanta institution, underscoring how the duo's anniversary year has become a broader celebration of the city that shaped them. In 2025, OutKast entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a milestone that placed their catalog alongside the most celebrated acts in popular music. Three decades after "ATLiens," the new Falcons line shows that the album is not only a piece of history: it remains a living part of Atlanta culture, worn, heard and celebrated on game day.

Sources: USA TODAY report and Hypebeast collection details.

Off The Corner!

The finale was more than a concert: it was a celebration of three decades of music, influence and cultural staying power, staged in one of the largest venues in the country and filled with fans who had followed the journey from its earliest chapters to its present-day triumphs.

Jay-Z took the stage around 9:25 p.m. and opened with "The Watcher 2," setting a confident, reflective tone for the night. The early part of the show moved briskly through career landmarks, but the evening soon turned into a West Coast summit. Oakland rapper Too $hort joined him for "Blow the Whistle," bringing a burst of Bay Area energy to the Los Angeles stage and reminding the crowd of the long, intertwined histories connecting the regions and eras represented that night.

The surprises kept coming. Snoop Dogg emerged for "Murder Was the Case," and then Dr. Dre joined Jay-Z for a run of era-defining songs: "The Next Episode," "California Love," "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" and "Still D.R.E." Together, the three artists offered a living survey of West Coast hip-hop, from G-funk classics to anthems that have crossed generations. The sequence felt less like a string of guest spots than a shared celebration, with each performer feeding off the crowd and the history in the room.

Jay-Z also paused to honor the late Nipsey Hussle, weaving in "Hussle & Motivate" and the "Last Time That I Checc'd" instrumental. The tribute added weight to the celebration, linking the night's sense of legacy to an artist whose work and community impact remain deeply felt in Los Angeles. For the closing stretch, Jay-Z delivered "Empire State of Mind," "Big Pimpin'," "Public Service Announcement" and "Encore," a finale that moved from New York pride to pure showmanship. He also urged the crowd to "question everything" in the age of AI, a message that fit a career built on independence, reinvention and careful control of his own story.

The SoFi run capped a series marking 30 years since "Reasonable Doubt" on June 25, 1996, and 25 years since "The Blueprint" on September 11, 2001, following shows in New York, London and Paris. Friday's SoFi opener had featured Blue Ivy Carter on piano, Scarface, John Legend and DJ Khaled, making the two-night stand a full portrait of Jay-Z's reach across generations, genres and cities. Saturday's finale, with its West Coast legends and its closing message, gave that portrait a fitting last chapter.

Sources: USA TODAY report and Consequence report.

Off The Corner!

Organized by Black Students for Revolution and Students for Socialism, with groups including the campus chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists and the Black Association of Psychology Students, participants spoke in front of Foellinger Auditorium, marched around the Main Quadrangle, and ended at the Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center, where the vigil included speeches, a moment of silence, and an opportunity to write messages to Wells. Attendees held signs and chanted for the case to be reopened, and organizers demanded that the Department of Justice reopen the investigation into his death.

A day later, on Thursday, October 22, students at Rider University in New Jersey held a "Walk for Wells" protest on the campus green. Hosted by Rider's collegiate chapter of the NAACP, the event began at 5:21 p.m. with a welcome from chapter president E'miija Eccles, followed by speeches, including from Reggie Walker, director of the Educational Opportunity Program, and Naa'san S.J. Carr, the chapter's inaugural president and founding member. The walk around Centennial Lake began at 5:37 p.m., with protesters carrying signs reading "Nolan didn't drown" and "Protect black children" and chanting "No justice, no peace" and "Say his name."

"We gather because remembrance matters, but so does the pursuit of truth and repair," Carr said. "We gather because advocacy matters, but so does accountability. And we gather because when something happens to one of us, it happens to all of us." Eccles said she organized the event to raise awareness of the case on campus and to show students standing against injustice in their systems.

Wells disappeared on July 4 after traveling to Horn Island with friends, and his body was found two days later. The Mississippi State Medical Examiner listed the cause and manner of death as undetermined. In September, a Mississippi grand jury declined to bring charges, finding no evidence of criminal conduct and concluding Wells had drowned. Wells' family, represented by civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, has continued to seek a federal investigation, and the student actions this week are part of a nationwide wave of protests pressing for answers in the case.

Sources: The Rider News report on the Rider walk, and the Let's Address Illinois report on the University of Illinois rally and vigil.

Support the family: https://www.gofundme.com/f/in-loving-memory-of-nolan-xavier-wells

Off The Corner!

The show follows his October 23 performance at the same venue and is part of the JAY-Z 30 series celebrating 30 years of music, culture and legacy.

The second Los Angeles date was added after unprecedented fan demand, JAY-Z and Roc Nation announced, expanding a series of global performances that already included a historic sold-out three-night run at Yankee Stadium in New York. That Yankee Stadium run shattered the venue's all-time concert attendance records across all three nights and made JAY-Z the first artist ever to sell out three consecutive shows there.

The anniversary concerts celebrate two of the rapper's most influential albums: 'Reasonable Doubt,' which turned 30 this year, and 'The Blueprint,' which marks its 25th anniversary. The expanded schedule also added second shows in London, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, alongside the Los Angeles dates.

For the new dates, presale tickets began Wednesday, July 29, with Citi as the official card of the Los Angeles performances, and the general on-sale followed Thursday, July 30 through Live Nation. Beyond the confirmed stadium dates, neither JAY-Z nor Roc Nation has announced a new album or a broader tour.

Tonight's show is the final night of the SoFi Stadium stand — the closing chapter of a 30-year celebration on one of the biggest stages in the country.

Sources: SoFi Stadium's announcement of the added October 24 show | JAY-Z's expanded anniversary shows | AXS listing for the October 24 SoFi Stadium show

Off The Corner!

This year's Grandmaster honorees are Kurtis Blow and The D.O.C., two MCs whose work helped carry hip-hop from its early days to a global culture.

The night also honors two more foundational figures: Nile Rodgers receives the Quincy Jones Achievement Award, and Ralph McDaniels receives the Contributor Award.

What sets this gala apart is that the honor comes with real support. The foundation pairs public recognition with financial backing for pioneers and other creatives, and net proceeds from the gala go toward supporting the honorees and other artists working on new projects — recognition for people whose influence has not always brought matching financial rewards.

Kurtis Blow's place in history is built on firsts. He was the first commercially successful rapper and the first rapper signed to a major record label, joining Mercury Records in 1979. His 1980 single 'The Breaks' became the first gold-certified rap song, proving that rap records could move units on a national scale.

The D.O.C. represents a different, equally vital chapter. His 1989 debut album, 'No One Can Do It Better,' released through Ruthless Records, went platinum. And his songwriting for N.W.A. and Dr. Dre extended his reach far beyond his own records, helping shape the West Coast sound that defined an era.

Nile Rodgers' connection to hip-hop runs through the music itself. His work with Chic, including 'Good Times,' provided the musical foundation for the Sugarhill Gang's 'Rapper's Delight,' linking his playing directly to rap's early commercial breakthrough.

Ralph McDaniels gave the culture a home on television. His show 'Video Music Box,' which began in 1983, introduced hip-hop performances and videos to audiences when mainstream coverage of the genre was still limited.
The lawsuit was filed Oct. 15, 2026, in Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to USA TODAY / Ventura County Star reporting. USA TODAY Sports obtained the complaint, which was first reported by the Ventura County Star. Dickerson himself is not named as a plaintiff; his son is identified in court documents as a minor and has since transferred to another school.

The complaint alleges students repeatedly directed racial slurs at the boy, including during a school-sponsored zoo field trip, where a student compared him to an animal. The same student was known to carry a knife on campus but faced no meaningful discipline, according to the complaint.

In another incident, a female student allegedly struck the boy on the head during lunch, took his food and poured out his water. School officials reviewed video footage of the incident but responded only by speaking with the student, the complaint says.

When the boy reported a racial slur used in a classroom discussion about nicknames, his teacher allegedly accused him of lying in front of his classmates.

Family attorney Robert Glassman said: "Instead of stopping the abuse, the school allowed it to continue." He added: "This is ugly bullying of the worst kind. It's racial. It's racially motivated."

The school disputes the allegations. "Oaks Christian School is committed to the dignity of every student, consistent with our Christian faith... The school disputes the allegations regarding its conduct and will respond through the legal process," the school said in a statement.

The lawsuit also references a separate 2024 case by a Black student alleging years of racist harassment at the school, including a mock slave auction and threats of lynching. The school said it investigated that case and permanently removed three students. The allegations in the new lawsuit have not been proven in court.

Why it matters: A Hall of Famer's family is taking a $47,000-a-year private school to court over alleged unchecked racism — and this is the second such lawsuit against the school in two years.

It was a full-frontal declaration of West Coast pride, arriving at one of the most turbulent moments in hip-hop history.

The 13-track album was an instant statement of intent. The title track soared to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart, while the album itself peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and went on to earn platinum certification — proof that the West still moved the needle.

The timing made Bow Down an event that transcended music. It arrived just weeks after Tupac Shakur was killed on September 7, 1996, at the very height of the East Coast–West Coast rivalry. Chest-out and defiant, the record channeled grief, pride and swagger into a unified front for California rap.

The trio had first linked on wax in 1995: "Westside Slaughterhouse" on Mack 10's debut album and "West Up!" on WC's Curb Servin'. Ice Cube served as producer and executive producer through his Lench Mob imprint, with production from Bud'da, QDIII (Quincy Jones III) and Binky Mack, and Cedric Samson co-producing.

The album's singles were "Bow Down," released in the summer of 1996, and "Gangstas Make the World Go Round," which followed in early 1997. Guest appearances came from Allfrumtha I, the Comrads and K-Dee.

Three decades on, Bow Down stands as a snapshot of the West Coast at its most defiant — and as a reminder of what the region's superstars could accomplish when they moved as one.

Records, distributed by Chrysalis. The original album arrived in July 1996, and it marked a turning point for the trio — their first record without longtime collaborator and producer Prince Paul, and a deliberate break from the playful, sample-rich sound that made them famous.

What replaced it was a stripped-back, hard-edged and socially conscious record confronting commercialism, materialism and the changing values of hip-hop. De La drew a line in the sand, and the album endures as one of the most principled statements in 90s rap. Commercially it held its own: the album peaked at No. 4 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, while the title track reached No. 53 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

The anniversary edition expands the album with newly remastered audio, complete instrumentals, remixes and rare recordings. Among the highlights is the celebrated "Stakes Is High (J Dilla Remix)" featuring Mos Def and Truth Enola — one of J Dilla's earliest major production credits — out now with a visualizer, alongside a J Dilla alternate remix and the unreleased tracks "Chanel No. Fever" and "I Can't Call It."

For collectors, the physical options are stacked: a 4LP hardcover package on black-and-white spoke-pattern vinyl with UV artwork honoring Dave (Trugoy the Dove), a 2CD hardcover edition, an Amazon-exclusive silver vinyl, an HHV Germany white vinyl pressing, and a Fat Beats/Get On Down pressing with a lyric book. A digital edition with bonus material rounds out the release.

Beyond the title track, the album's standouts still resonate: "The Bizness" with Common, "Itzsoweezee (HOT)," "Big Brother Beat" with Mos Def, and "Pony Ride" with Truth Enola.

"Stakes Is High was us speaking honestly about what we were seeing and experiencing in hip-hop at that moment," said Posdnuos. "Thirty years later, to see people still connecting with those messages, and a new generation discovering the album, means a great deal."

De La Soul — Posdnuos, Trugoy the Dove (Dave) and Maseo — remain one of hip-hop's most important groups. The group's catalog finally arrived on streaming services in 2023, and their most recent studio album, Cabin in the Sky, was released in 2025 on Mass Appeal.

Callais.

The coalition organizing the Day of Action includes the Legal Defense Fund, the ACLU of Louisiana, the Power Coalition for Equity and Justice, Black Voters Matter, and Boots on the Ground.

At the center of the dispute: Louisiana’s only remaining majority-Black congressional district — the 2nd Congressional District, currently represented by Congressman Troy Carter, covering much of New Orleans.

On April 29, 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in Louisiana v. Callais that the state’s map creating a second majority-Black district was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander, holding that the Voting Rights Act did not require the second district under the circumstances.

After that ruling, Louisiana lawmakers approved a new congressional map in May 2026 that eliminated the second majority-Black district — a change that also creates an opportunity for Republicans to win five of Louisiana’s six congressional seats, up from four under the previous map.

Black residents account for roughly one-third of Louisiana’s population, and civil rights advocates warn the ruling substantially narrowed the tools available to address racial vote dilution, particularly in states with long histories of discrimination in voting and political representation.

Why it matters: Congressional boundaries determine which communities vote together, which candidates are accountable to those communities, and how effectively residents translate voting strength into political influence.

The October 27 hearing is set for 10:30 a.m. at the federal courthouse in Shreveport before a three-judge panel. Attorneys, clients, and coalition leaders plan a press conference after the proceedings, then lead participants to a nearby early-voting location — early voting ends statewide October 27 ahead of the November 3 election. Voting rights advocates argue that letting the case proceed could reopen a challenge to the remaining majority-Black district even after the legislature adopted a replacement map.

Reporting by Big Easy Magazine.

More hip-hop stories: Off The Corner

Off The Corner!

On October 21, 1997, The Firm released their highly anticipated debut, "The Album," through Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records. The lineup brought together Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ and Nature — four Queens MCs united under the organized-crime imagery and cinematic storytelling of the mafioso rap movement that was dominating New York hip-hop in the late '90s.

The Firm's origins trace back to Nas's 1996 sophomore album "It Was Written" and its standout collaboration "Affirmative Action," which featured Nas, AZ, Foxy Brown and Cormega. The chemistry between the four MCs generated enormous excitement, and a full-length project seemed like a natural next step. But the original lineup wouldn't survive the transition — internal disagreements led to Cormega's departure, with fellow Queensbridge MC Nature stepping into his place.

With Steve Stoute guiding the project and Dr. Dre contributing production expertise, "The Album" was positioned as a landmark release — East Coast lyrical excellence meeting West Coast production sophistication, at a time when the coasts were still healing from the mid-'90s tensions.

The 18-track album featured production from Dr. Dre, Trackmasterz, L.E.S. and other contributors. Standout records included "Firm Biz," the lead single featuring Dawn Robinson that leaned into commercial accessibility; "Phone Tap," a Dr. Dre collaboration built around a cinematic concept of federal surveillance; plus "Desperados" and "Executive Decision."

Commercially, the album made an immediate impact, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart with approximately 147,000 copies sold in its opening week. The critical reception was more divided — some felt the glossy production didn't fully capture the raw chemistry that made the group such an intriguing concept, and fans who had followed the project from its earliest days never stopped talking about Cormega's absence.

But 29 years later, "The Album" stands as an important chapter in hip-hop history — a reminder of an era when lyrical competition, major-label ambition and the mafioso aesthetic collided at the height of the culture's commercial expansion. The Firm never released another studio album, but the story came full circle in 2020 when Nas reunited the original lineup of AZ, Foxy Brown and Cormega on "Full Circle" from his album "King's Disease."

Salute to Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ, Nature, Cormega, Dr. Dre, Steve Stoute and everyone who contributed to this historic release.

On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Duane Keith "Keffe D" Davis, 63, was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur. Eighth Judicial District Court Judge Carli Kierny handed down consecutive sentences of 20 years to life for first-degree murder and 20 years to life for use of a deadly weapon.

The sentence came six weeks after a Clark County jury found Davis guilty of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon on August 31, 2026, following more than three hours of deliberations at the end of an 11-day trial that began on August 10 — nearly 30 years to the day after Shakur was shot on September 7, 1996, near the Las Vegas Strip. Shakur died from his injuries six days later. He was 25.

Davis was arrested in September 2023 and is the first and only person ever charged and convicted in connection with Shakur's murder — one of the most infamous unsolved cases in music history.

Prosecutors argued that Davis orchestrated the drive-by shooting, handing a firearm to the shooter riding in a white Cadillac. The prosecution's case leaned heavily on Davis's own words — statements he made in recorded interviews with law enforcement and the media, and admissions in his 2019 tell-all memoir, "Compton Street Legend." Davis's attorney, Michael Sanft, disputed the reliability of those accounts during the trial and has said he plans to appeal the verdict.

Before sentencing, members of Shakur's family addressed the court. His sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, spoke about the lasting trauma of her brother's death and the decades the family spent without him. His brother, Maurice "Mopreme" Shakur, called for the maximum sentence, describing the devastating impact of the murder on the family and on Shakur's fans.

Judge Kierny rejected Davis's argument that he had left his violent past behind. "You don't get to take a man from his family," she told him. "You don't get to take his very life, his whole future from him, and just walk away from it. Especially when that man is Tupac Shakur."

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson called it a milestone three decades in the making: "Today, justice has been served for Tupac Shakur and his loved ones. While no amount of time in prison can bring Tupac back, we hope this sentencing brings some measure of closure and peace to his family after nearly 30 years."

Shakur remains one of hip-hop's most influential voices — a cultural icon whose music helped shape the future of the art form. The conviction closes the book on a case that haunted the culture for 30 years.

Wells, an 18-year-old Black student at Southwest Mississippi Community College, went on a July 4th boating trip to Horn Island, off the Mississippi Gulf Coast, with several friends. He never returned. His friends came back to the mainland with his cell phone but without him; his body was found in the water near the island two days later, on July 6.

In September, a grand jury declined to bring criminal charges, describing the circumstances of his death as "consistent with drowning." But the state medical examiner had declared the cause of death "undetermined," and the autopsy reports — publicly released after the grand jury decision — revealed two contusions on the back of Wells' head, no fluid or debris in his airways, and an empty stomach. The family's attorney, civil rights lawyer Ben Crump, has described the injuries as blunt-force trauma and said nobody has explained how they got there.

On October 15, a 292-page report of cell phone messages between Wells' friends was released, fueling further suspicion. In the messages, friends discussed the investigation while a separate group chat of Wells' Black friends expressed suspicion toward the group that returned from Horn Island without him.

Following the grand jury decision, spontaneous student walkouts broke out at HBCUs across the South: at Atlanta University Center on October 1, North Carolina Central on October 6, and Prairie View A&M on October 7. Students at Jackson State University then called a Southern Day of Action on October 15, demanding the investigation be reopened immediately. According to organizers, about a dozen schools across five states answered the call.

"There has never been a moment in the history of the US where Black Americans could rely on the government to get justice for us," said North Carolina-based organizer Prince Williams. Organizers are urging students and communities nationwide to pressure local, state, and federal officials to reopen the case.

The family continues to seek a federal investigation into Nolan's death.

Tomorrow — October 22 — marks 35 years since Black Sheep released their debut album, A Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing. And for one brief, shining moment in late 1991, the Queens duo were the biggest thing in the Native Tongues universe.

Andres “Dres” Titus and William “Mr. Lawnge” McLean arrived as the literal and metaphorical Black Sheep of the Native Tongues family — the collective that had already given the world the Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, and Monie Love. What nobody expected was that their debut would initially outsell the more critically acclaimed sophomore albums from their legendary brethren: A Tribe Called Quest’s The Low End Theory and De La Soul’s De La Soul Is Dead.

The engine was “The Choice Is Yours (Revisited).” From around Thanksgiving 1991 through the end of the school year in 1992, there was arguably no bigger single in the rap universe — the kind of record that defined a season. By April 1992, A Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing was certified Gold.

In retrospect, the album represented the absolute apex of the Native Tongues movement — and it remains the only Black Sheep album to fully permeate pop culture’s collective consciousness. Thirty-five years on, “The Choice Is Yours” is still the call-and-response that fills a room.

Frierson's suit says both incidents were captured on video and audio recordings.

Frierson says he showed the recordings to the commission's assistant human resources director, Danny Rodriguez — who, the complaint alleges, did nothing. A private lawyer hired to investigate the claims two years later allegedly never interviewed the witnesses Frierson named. The co-worker's comments were "deemed non-consequential," the suit says, and the water company pushed Frierson to resign.

The complaint also alleges the commission's chief operating officer, Mike Marotta, was in the room when the "We don't like Black people" remark was made — and said nothing.

In March 2025, Frierson says he took the allegations to Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh. The suit says Sayegh called the claim "categorically false," asserted the city has no jurisdiction over employment matters at the water commission, and said accusations of racism "must be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated." The water commission is jointly owned by Paterson, Clifton and Passaic, whose mayors appoint its members.

Then in February 2026, the commission went into closed session to discuss Frierson's discrimination and hostile work environment claims. The lawsuit alleges the two Black commissioners — Ruby Cotton and Ron Van Rensalier — were asked to leave the room for that discussion, "preventing the only Black/African-Americans on the commission from participating in the discussion centered on plaintiff's claims of discrimination and hostile work environment." Frierson was returned to active employment the following month.

Why this matters: this is a textbook case of why documentation alone doesn't guarantee accountability — Frierson had recordings and named witnesses, and still watched an investigation that allegedly skipped his witnesses and pressured him to resign. It also raises hard questions about who gets to sit in the room when discrimination claims are decided. All claims above are allegations from the lawsuit as reported; the co-worker and commission have not been convicted of anything.

Off The Corner!

Snoop Dogg — born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. on October 20, 1971 — has been a star for so long that it's easy to forget how unlikely the run was: a laid-back flow from Long Beach that became one of the most recognized voices on the planet.

The introduction came through Dr. Dre: "Deep Cover" in 1992, then all over The Chronic, including "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang." Then came the debut. Doggystyle (1993) opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with "Who Am I (What's My Name?)" and "Gin and Juice" turning Snoop into a household name in a single season.

What separates Snoop is the second act — and the third, and the fourth. Tha Doggfather, the No Limit run, Tha Last Meal, "Drop It Like It's Hot" with Pharrell giving him his first No. 1 on the Hot 100, "Young, Wild & Free" with Wiz Khalifa, Bush, BODR, and 2024's Missionary, produced by Dr. Dre. Most careers don't last one era. Snoop has headlined several.

Then there's everything outside the booth: the Super Bowl LVI halftime show alongside Dre, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and Mary J. Blige. Buying Death Row Records in 2022. Martha & Snoop's Potluck Dinner Party. A chair on The Voice. Carrying the Olympic torch through Paris as NBC's Olympics correspondent. A Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2018.

And he's still working: his new single "H.O.U.S.E" with HUGEL dropped October 16 on Make The Girls Dance Records — the Doggfather's 2026 is as busy as ever.

Three decades-plus in, the lesson of Snoop Dogg is staying power: stay yourself, stay working, and let the culture keep catching up. Happy 55th birthday to the Doggfather.

This month marks three years since his death, and the records he left behind still sound as alive as ever. His passing was announced by fellow legendary producer DJ Premier, and tributes poured in from DJ Premier, Eminem and many others across the culture.

His name came from his gift for digging up obscure 45 RPM vinyl records and transforming forgotten sounds into infectious drum patterns, horn loops and unforgettable breakbeats. Long before the producer title carried the weight it does today, he treated the 45 as an instrument in its own right — a crate-digging habit that became both his identity and his legacy.

His breakthrough came in 1987 with the instrumental classic "The 900 Number," built around the saxophone riff from Marva Whitney's 1968 recording "Unwind Yourself." It became a staple at hip-hop parties and clubs worldwide and gained wider fame through the Ed Lover Dance on Yo! MTV Raps; years later, DJ Kool looped its horn into his 1996 anthem "Let Me Clear My Throat."

In the late 1980s he became a driving creative force behind the Flavor Unit collective, which helped introduce Queen Latifah, Chill Rob G, Lakim Shabazz, Latee, Apache, Double J, Nikki D and others. He produced Queen Latifah's groundbreaking 1989 debut "All Hail The Queen" ("Ladies First," "Wrath of My Madness"). His fingerprints are on early Gang Starr recordings including "Bust A Move Boy," which DJ Premier later credited with introducing him to Guru's voice.

In 1998 he produced JAY-Z's "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)," transforming a sample from the Broadway musical Annie into one of Hov's biggest records and the centerpiece of Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life. Two years later he delivered Eminem's "Stan" featuring Dido, built around a sample of Dido's "Thank You" — one of hip-hop's most celebrated storytelling records. His range extended to work with Eric B. & Rakim, Salt-N-Pepa and Madonna, and his "Lost Breakbeats" series became essential material for DJs, producers and vinyl collectors.

The fight for answers in a string of suspicious deaths of Black Americans has reached the international stage. This month, the American Civil Liberties Union brought the cases before the United Nations Human Rights Council, urging international intervention into deaths spanning the past decade.

The ACLU raised concerns that local law enforcement agencies have prematurely classified suspicious deaths as suicides — particularly in Southern states, where generations of racial violence have left communities deeply distrustful of official explanations.

The NAACP Legal Defense Fund has taken similar action. On August 24, 2026, the organization sent a formal letter to Congress calling for a congressional commission to investigate the deaths, and submitted appeals to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Contemporary Forms of Racism and the UN's Independent Expert Mechanism to Advance Racial Justice and Equality in Law Enforcement (EMLER). The LDF is asking those bodies to examine whether racial bias has led American law enforcement to fail in investigating these deaths, and to recommend remedies.

The push in Congress has also intensified. On September 8, Representative Ayanna Pressley led 59 lawmakers in a letter to the Department of Justice and the FBI demanding comprehensive investigations, invoking the Emmett Till Antilynching Act of 2022 and urging federal authorities to examine whether any of the deaths constitute racially motivated hate crimes. As of this month, neither the DOJ nor the FBI has publicly responded.

According to The Source, reports cite at least 10 Black Americans found hanging nationwide in 2026. Authorities have ruled several of those deaths suicides, citing evidence including surveillance footage and personal histories — but families and advocates continue to demand thorough examinations of the circumstances in each case.

In Jackson, Mississippi, the August death of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune became a particularly alarming example: she was found hanging, and authorities ultimately ruled her death a homicide — underscoring why advocates insist suspicious circumstances warrant careful investigation.

Why it matters

America's history of lynching remains central to the growing outrage. For generations, hanging was used as an instrument of racial terror, a legacy that continues to shape how Black communities respond to unexplained deaths. With the ACLU before the UN Human Rights Council and the Legal Defense Fund appealing to the UN Special Rapporteur, the families of these victims are no longer only asking American authorities for answers — they are asking the world to watch.

Thirty-three years ago today, on October 19, 1993, Eazy-E released It's On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa through his own Ruthless Records. The EP would become the last project released during his lifetime — and one of the most talked-about records of the West Coast era.

The project was a direct response to Dr. Dre's debut solo album The Chronic, which repeatedly took shots at Eazy. Eazy had originally planned a double album called Temporary Insanity to follow his 1992 EP 5150: Home 4 tha Sick, but he scrapped those plans to answer Dre head-on — and the feud played out on wax for the world to hear.

The lead single, Real Muthaphuckkin G's, became Eazy's most successful single, and both it and Any Last Werdz got music videos. Tracks like the title cut It's On, Still a Nigga, and Gimmie That Nutt showed off his unmistakable high-pitched delivery, dark humor, and confrontational storytelling — with Dre's name coming up on nearly every track.

Commercially, the EP proved Eazy's audience was still firmly behind him. It debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, reached No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and sold 110,600 copies in its first week. It eventually earned double-platinum certification from the RIAA, making it one of the most successful releases of his solo career.

Beyond the lyrical warfare, the record cemented Eazy-E's role as both artist and independent record executive protecting the Ruthless Records legacy — the label that introduced N.W.A and helped bring gangsta rap into the mainstream — even as Dre was building Death Row into the West Coast's newest powerhouse.

Tragically, this would be the final record Eazy-E released while he was alive. He died on March 26, 1995, at just 30 years old, following complications from AIDS.

Thirty-three years later, It's On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa remains a defining chapter in the N.W.A saga — a reminder of an era when rivalries were settled on wax, and Eazy-E stood as an unapologetic voice who refused to back down from even his most powerful former allies.

Twenty years after his passing, the Detroit producer’s influence still echoes through every corner of hip-hop — and now, the J Dilla Foundation is channeling that love into action. The foundation is teaming up with the Unity Token (www.myunity.io) on a concert initiative built around lupus awareness, education, and fundraising.

Here’s the play: a series of live concerts paired with pay-per-view streaming, powered by SYNC technology and True Fan wearable digital merchandise. It’s a full-court press — the in-person energy of a show, the global reach of streaming, and digital collectibles for the day-one supporters. Under the hood, the Unity Token’s blockchain transaction tracking is designed to bring real transparency to charitable fundraising, so every dollar’s journey is out in the open.

It’s the kind of forward-thinking move Dilla himself might have appreciated — an innovator in the lab, now the inspiration for innovation in how the culture gives back.

For the Yancey family, this fight is personal. Dilla died on February 10, 2006, from complications of lupus, closing out a four-year battle with the disease. His mother, Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey-Smith, cared for him through those years — and she knows the disease from the inside, living with lupus herself, as does her daughter. Ma Dukes is backing the initiative.

Toney Smith, Chairman of the J Dilla Foundation, says the partnership brings technology and transparency to supporting charitable causes.

The foundation has given the concept its approval, and a formal memorandum of understanding is now in progress. No concert dates or artists have been announced yet — those are still TBA — but the blueprint is set. For a community that has kept Dilla’s name alive through tributes like the annual DC Loves Dilla celebration, this is the next evolution: turning remembrance into results.

Read the full story on Medium

Off The Corner!

The investigation, run by the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Mississippi, began in March 2023 after residents accused officers of using roadblocks to target Black drivers, engaging in excessive force, committing sexual assault, and making unjustified arrests.

Lexington is a rural, majority-Black city about 65 miles outside Jackson. The 2024 report found that officers routinely singled out Black citizens for low-level arrests — largely to generate revenue for the police department — and jailed people for extended periods when they could not afford to pay fines. Between 2022 and 2024, the department made one arrest for every four people in town, more than ten times the per-capita arrest rate for the state of Mississippi. The city court had issued warrants for more than 650 people — nearly half of Lexington’s population — for unpaid fines.

Under the three-year settlement, the city and police department must dismiss existing unlawful warrants for unpaid fines and fees, move to expunge the records of unlawful fine-based convictions, and are banned from creating quota or incentive systems for stops, warnings, citations, arrests, or related revenue. New fines or fees, including arrest processing fees, may only be imposed after a documented, individual determination of whether the person can pay, or a showing that the person willfully refused to pay. The agreement also requires DOJ-approved training on stops, searches, arrests, and use of force, plus documentation and review systems to ensure such actions are lawful. The agreement lasts three years and can be cut short or extended depending on whether the parties mutually determine compliance.

It is not a court-supervised consent decree; the city agreed to the changes without a court ruling on liability.

“The Department of Justice supports local law enforcement,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Civil Rights Division. “We are very pleased that the City of Lexington and the Lexington Police Department reached an agreement to enhance the lawful and essential activities of the police department and its officers as they continue to protect and serve the citizens of Lexington and its surrounding areas.”

“Through these reforms, we seek not only to address the concerns identified in our investigation, but also to strengthen public trust and promote practices that respect the rights and dignity of every person,” U.S. Attorney J.E. Baxter Kruger for the Southern District of Mississippi said in a news release.

Why it matters

The Lexington findings are a stark example of policing for profit in a majority-Black town — a pattern the DOJ has now committed the city to dismantle, including the end of debtors’-prison-style jailing over unpaid fines. With the agreement lasting three years under DOJ oversight, the reforms give federal weight to what local residents had reported since 2023.

Sources: ABC News report, AP report, settlement details

More hip-hop stories: Off The Corner

Off The Corner!

The Justice Department found that the department engages in a pattern or practice of civil rights violations, following up on its findings report of September 26, 2024.

According to the Justice Department's 2024 report, the Lexington Police Department routinely violated citizens' civil rights in the rural, poor, majority-Black city located about 65 miles north of Jackson, the state capital. The report found that police targeted Black people for arrests, made arrests for low-level offenses to generate money for the police department, and locked people up for extended periods of time if they could not afford to pay fines. The Department also found the department used excessive force and retaliated against critics. The investigation began in March 2023.

Under the settlement, the city and the police department must reform practices on fines and fees, bail and release criteria, and potential conflicts of interest. The department must also revise its policies on stops, searches, arrests, and use of force, and update how officers report and how supervisors review those actions.

The agreement bars Lexington police from continuing to jail people for unpaid fines without first assessing whether they can afford to pay them, a practice that violates the Fourteenth Amendment. The city must also dismiss existing warrants for unpaid fines and fees that violate the law and move to expunge the records of all unlawful fine-based convictions. The 2024 report found the city court had issued arrest warrants for more than 650 people, roughly half of the city's population, for unpaid fines.

The settlement also bars the city and police department from creating or using a quota or incentive system for stops, warnings, citations, arrests, or related revenue. Between 2022 and 2024, the Lexington Police Department made one arrest for every four people in town, more than 10 times the per-capita arrest rate for the state of Mississippi. The department will also require Justice Department-approved training on stops, searches, arrests, and use of force, along with documentation and review systems to ensure those actions are lawful.

"The Department of Justice supports local law enforcement," said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division. "We are very pleased that the City of Lexington and the Lexington Police Department reached an agreement to enhance the lawful and essential activities of the police department and its officers as they continue to protect and serve the citizens of Lexington and its surrounding areas."

"Today's agreement reflects a shared commitment to meaningful and sustainable change," said U.S. Attorney J.E. Baxter Kruger for the Southern District of Mississippi. "Through these reforms, we seek not only to address the concerns identified in our investigation, but also to strengthen public trust and promote practices that respect the rights and dignity of every person."

The agreement lasts for three years, but could be cut short or extended depending on whether the city and police department reach compliance. The Associated Press reported that city and police department officials did not immediately respond to its requests for comment.

Why it matters: when a police department funds itself through fines and low-level arrests, the burden falls hardest on the people least able to pay. In Lexington, a poor, majority-Black city, that system produced warrants against roughly half the town's population. This settlement does not just end those practices on paper — it requires dismissal of unlawful warrants, expungement of unlawful convictions, and years of monitored reform.

Sources:

U.S. Department of Justice press release

Associated Press report

Off The Corner!

Born on October 17, 1969, in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, Wyclef turns 57 today, October 17, 2026. It is a fitting day to celebrate an artist whose career has moved from group success to a wide-ranging solo catalog, and whose work has stayed connected to the country where he was born.

Wyclef rose to fame in the 1990s as a member of the Fugees, alongside Lauryn Hill and Pras. The trio became one of the defining groups of the decade, blending hip-hop with soul, reggae, and Caribbean sounds. Their second album, "The Score" (1996), topped both the Billboard 200 and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It went on to win Best Rap Album at the 39th Annual GRAMMY Awards, a milestone that confirmed the Fugees' place in hip-hop history.

As a solo artist, Wyclef built a career that crossed genres and generations. He is known for songs including "Gone Till November," a warm, guitar-driven track that became one of his signature solo records, and "Hips Don't Lie," his worldwide hit collaboration with Shakira. Across albums and collaborations, he has moved easily between rap, singing, live instrumentation, and production, often drawing on Haitian and Caribbean musical traditions.

Beyond music, Wyclef has also done extensive philanthropic work connected to Haiti. He has used his platform to support relief, education, and community efforts tied to the country, and his public work has kept Haiti's needs and culture in front of international audiences. That commitment has become a central part of how many fans understand his career.

Fifty-seven years after his birth, and three decades after "The Score," Wyclef's influence remains easy to hear: in the blend of hip-hop and world music, in the use of live bands in rap performance, and in artists who treat genre as something to cross rather than a boundary to obey. The show draws on the joint archive of Ice-T and DJ Afrika Islam, bringing together personal history, recorded music, photographs, and ephemera that trace how hip-hop grew from Bronx and Los Angeles roots into a global force.

DAY ONE DNA features more than 400 artifacts spanning five decades and is described as the world's largest private collection of hip-hop artifacts and ephemera. One of its most talked-about highlights is a full-scale recreation of DJ Afrika Islam's 1980s-era South Bronx bedroom, where he and Ice-T wrote their 1987 debut album "Rhyme Pays." That room turns a private creative space into public history, showing visitors where ideas, rhymes, and beats first took shape.

Cadogan Tate will provide museum-grade transportation, handling, storage, and installation for the tour. That work matters because many of the objects are irreplaceable: fragile paper, one-of-a-kind recordings, clothing, photographs, and personal items that cannot simply be boxed and shipped like ordinary freight. Museum-grade handling is meant to protect the collection while allowing more people to see it in person.

Ice-T reflected on how everyday objects become history over time: "When you're living it, you don't think of it as art. It's not art — it's just your life. Then 20 or 30 years later, somebody looks at it and says, 'Wow, that's valuable. That's history.'" François Vandame, Cadogan Tate's Director of Business Development, added: "This archive doesn't just document the birth of hip-hop; it honors a profound movement that completely reshaped global culture."

With the Harvard premiere behind it and a national tour now supported by a specialist logistics partner, DAY ONE DNA is positioned to reach new audiences. International engagements are also in development, a sign that the story told by Ice-T and DJ Afrika Islam continues to resonate far beyond the places where it began.

Photo: Installation view of DAY ONE DNA at Harvard University's Alain Locke Gallery.
