Scott Enloe, a U.S. angler, made a spectacular catch at the Blue Mesa Reservoir, a man-made lake in Colorado, reeling in a 33.24-kilogram lake trout. The trout, a greenish-grayish speckled giant the weight of a golden retriever, is potentially record-breaking. Enloe’s catch challenges the standing record set in 1995 by Lloyd Bull, who caught a 32.6-kilogram lake trout from the waters in the Northwest Territories. “It’s obviously the largest one I’ve ever seen,” Enloe said, describing the trout as being 47 inches long with a 37-inch girth, which was larger than his own waist. However, despite the size of Enloe’s trout, it might not be officially recognized by the International Game Fish Association’s (IGFA) record books. This is due to the IGFA’s requirement that fish be weighed on land, whereas Enloe weighed, measured, and photographed his trout on his boat before releasing it back into the water. Enloe expressed indifference towards this potential technicality, stating, “Whether I get my name in the books or not, that’s irrelevant to me. I was not going to kill the fish regardless.” Zac Bellapigna, angler recognition coordinator for the IGFA, commended Enloe for his catch-and-release approach, noting that fishers can bring their catch to […]

In Ontario, children aged 12 and under are currently not required by law to wear a life-jacket while on a boat. However, a private member’s bill, called Joshua’s Law, is seeking to change that. The bill, introduced by Carleton MPP Goldie Ghamari, is named after 11-year-old Joshua Steinberg who tragically died in a boating accident in 2018 without wearing a life-jacket. If passed, the law would mandate that every child 12 and under must wear a life-jacket or personal flotation device while boating in Ontario waters, with a $200 fine for each child not wearing one. Currently, while life-jackets must be present on board, they are not required to be worn. The proposed bill has achieved second reading and unanimous support from all parties, but may not pass before the current legislative session concludes. The bill has garnered support from advocates like Brigitte Labby, a safe boating instructor, who noted that in 80% of drowning cases, the person was not wearing a life-jacket or personal flotation device. The enforcement of the proposed law is likely to be more prevalent on larger, more popular lakes and less so on smaller, remote lakes due to the lack of police presence. Read More […]

In an astounding instance of chicanery, Jacob Runyan, 43, of Ashtabula, and Chase Cominsky, 36, of Hermitage, Pennsylvania, have been sentenced to jail for their disingenuous actions at a Lake Erie walleye tournament in Cleveland. Their subterfuge? Stuffing their fish with lead weights to gain an unfair advantage. The duo’s flagrant dishonesty got them a 10-day sojourn in Cuyahoga County Jail, courtesy of Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Steven Gall. Following their stint in the slammer, each will undergo a year of probation and cough up a $2,500 fine. An additional 30-day sentence waits in the wings should they violate probation. However, Gall generously offered to halve the fine if the men donate $1,250 to a child-oriented fishing charity. Quoting ancient philosopher Sophocles, Judge Gall poignantly remarked, “I would rather lose with honor than win by cheating.” The men, now tagged as ‘convicted felons and cheaters’, were immediately escorted to jail. Their public apology did little to assuage the damage done to their families and the fishing community.

Fish for free across Ontario from May 12-13 To kick off the spring fishing season, families, fishing enthusiasts and first-time anglers across Ontario can celebrate Mother’s Day with free fishing this weekend. “Whether you’re new to fishing or an experienced angler, it’s a great way to bond with family this Mother’s Day weekend,” said Graydon Smith, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry. “This is a fantastic way for families to get out and enjoy one of Ontario’s greatest natural resources – our beautiful lakes, rivers and streams.” If you are fishing for free on the Mother’s Day weekend, all conservation licence catch limits, size limits, sanctuaries and all other fishing regulations and rules still apply. Quick Facts Approximately 1.2 million licensed anglers spend $1.75 billion per year on recreational fishing in Ontario. Additional annual free fishing events coming up this year include Father’s Day weekend (June 17-18), and Family Fishing Week to celebrate Canada Day (July 1-9). Canadian residents taking part in free fishing periods need to carry identification issued by the provincial or federal government, showing name and date of birth. Outside of free fishing periods, most Canadians 18 and older, but under the age of 65 must have […]

The Town of Oakville is permitting night fishing at its piers starting late summer, after approving a pilot program during a council meeting. The program allows fishing from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. between Aug. 1 and Oct. 15 at designated areas of the east pier in Bronte and the east/west piers in Oakville. This pilot project is an attempt to balance public safety with the increased interest in recreational fishing that emerged during the pandemic. Fishing restrictions were eased in 2021, allowing for additional spring and fall fishing opportunities. The night fishing period coincides with the salmon run, and staff will report the results of the pilot to council in the first quarter of 2024. Signs will be posted to inform the public of the designated night fishing areas, with fishing remaining restricted in other waterfront parks and harbours.

On Sunday, Gustafson of Kenora, Ontario, became the first Canuck to win the $1 million Bassmaster Classic. Gustafson finished one pound, nine ounces ahead of American Bryan Schmitt after weighing 12 fish for 42 pounds, seven ounces. But winning the prestigious Ray Scott Trophy wasn’t something that came easily. Gustafson led American John Cox by five pounds, twelve ounces when the final round on Sunday began. However, Gustafson was only able to land two fish totaling six pounds, 13 ounces to defeat Schmitt and win the $300,000 first-place prize. Schmitt came in second with a final five-fish limit of 11 pounds, 1 ounce, for a total weight of 40 pounds, 14 ounces. After weighing his final five fish, he moved into first place after beginning Sunday’s round in third place, over five pounds behind Gustafson. With 12 fish weighing a combined 30 pounds, 8 ounces, Cory Johnston of Cavan, Ontario, also qualified for Sunday’s final round and placed 11th overall. Chris Johnston, the brother of Johnston, placed 31st out of 55 anglers, with six fish weighing 15 pounds, 5 ounces. Bowmanville, Ontario resident Cooper Gallant placed 52nd with his four fish totaling six pounds, 13 ounces. Gustafson and the Johnstons […]

Jeff Gustafson of Canada had a great start to the US$1 million Bassmaster Classic. Gustafson of Kenora, Ont., took the overall lead after the first day of the Tennessee River’s premier pro bass fishing event. Gustafson has done well in the past. In 2021, he won the Elite Series tournament on the Tennessee River from start to finish. As a result, he became the circuit’s second Canadian champion. Chris Johnston of Peterborough, Ont., won the Elite Series event on the St. Lawrence River at Clayton, N.Y., the year before. “You know,” Gustafson said, “it worked out today.” “I don’t have many options, but I started this morning where I caught them the last time, and there are some fish there, but they’re difficult to catch.” “I lost a nice one because I tried to boat-flip it on a small hook, which I shouldn’t have done.” I went to the next location, sat down, and made it happen.” Both Johnston and his brother, Cory, had strong starts on Friday. Cory Johnston of Cavan, Ont., finished fifth overall with a five-fish bag weighing 14 pounds, two ounces, while Chris Johnston finished seventh with a five-fish bag weighing 13 pounds, 12 ounces.
