HTC Supersonic has been into rumors for quite some time now. If the report from WSJ is to be believed, the phone would be announced officially next week at CTIA 2010. WSJ reports that Sprint’s CEO, Dan Hesse would unveil the first ever 4G phone during the event.

HTC Supersonic would be the first phone to feature WiMax. Sprint would be using Clearwire service to allow its customer’s to connect to WiMax. Clearwire is a WiMax service provider with Sprint as a major investor in the network. It is also said that Sprint would be paying Clearwire a fee for every WiMax customer.

1GHz Snapdragon processor powered, 4.3″ display and Android OS 2.1 phone with the HTC Sense UI could give a jump to the struggling Sprint network. HTC Supersonic would make a lot of smartphones feel not-so-smart-anymore. More on the phone when it becomes official next week, if it does. Till then, check out a leaked video of the phone after the jump.

Google might have to look for different names for its super phone, now since the US Trademark Office has rejected its application to trademark “Nexus One”.

The reason for the refusal is that the name conflicts with another Nexus mark, given to Integra Telecom back in Dec 2008. The mark owned by Integra refers to “the provision of telecommunication services and the transmission of voice and data”. But Google might argue that theirs is a product and not a service.

The Trademarks office says that multiple trademarks to similar names could create confusion in the mind of a customer. Even though there is no other Nexus phone in the market (and Integra hasn’t materialized its “Nexus” TM into a product/service), the decision is that “the goods and/or services of the parties need not be identical or directly competitive to find a likelihood of confusion”.

Many bloggers would know that this is second time Google has invited trouble over the name “Nexus One”. Previously, when the trademark application was filled, it was noted that the name Nexus One seemed to refer to the cyborgs in the movie “Blade Runner,” which was inspired by the novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by the late Philip K. Dick.

Back to the Nexus One trademark refusal, Google has 6 months to respond to the notice of refusal. In the worst case, Google might have to change the name of the phone being currently sold or else Integra could sue it for infringement of the trademark (where was Integra till now?). Nexus One is expected to launch soon under its original name in UK with Vodafone, as the conflicting TM is unlikely to be held in UK.

Nokia has launched the Design By Community project wherein Nokia is inviting anyone across the globe to give their input for the “smartphone concept device of the future”. The 8 week project would involve a new design widget every week and users can give their input for the design. The design widget also takes care of the feasibility of your design through a needle hovering in three zones – Red, Yellow and Green. Where Green obviously means ‘Perfect Mix’. Not exactly like the Sony Ericsson Dot, but seems like crowd-sourcing is the new mantra.

Week 1 of the project involves design aspects related to the phone’s display and UI, covering features like screen size, screen type, screen ratio and secondary buttons. The entire 8-week schedule is as follows -

Week 1 – Display and user interface
Week 2 – Size and shape
Week 3 – Materials
Week 4 – Symbian or MeeGo?
Week 5 – Connectivity
Week 6 – Camera
Week 7 – Enhancements
Week 8 – What shall we call it?

Videocon IMO would need to brand itself harder to be a cellphone player. Nothing wrong with manufacturing phones, but the only problem is that no on expects you to pull out a Videocon from your pocket. That aside, the V1675 is a well priced blackberry clone (at least in design). Videocon has somehow managed to deliver a QWERTY, Dual SIM smartphone with an optical trackpad for Rs 5500. While you will find many local china pieces at better price, mind you this one comes with a brand name like Vodafone with it. So is the V1675 really cool?

Well not really. Had Videocon thought a little about innovating and creating a real product instead of just copying Blackberry design, UI (icons etc) and attach to that a Nokia charging slot; I would have appreciated this product lot more. Yes the phone works with a Nokia charger and while you would say that its good for compatibility, its actually no better than a silly Chinese counterfeits who bundle in a Nokia charging pin (why not a MicroUSB that’s the industry standard?). Seems like the innovation and real product creation in mobile field is left to new entrants like Notion Ink only.

Coming back to the V1675

from Videocon the phone features Dual SIM, Physical QWERTY, Bluetooth AD2P, 2MP camera with flash, front camera and upto 2GB expandable memory. The phone claims to be integrated with Yahoo, Facebook, MSN and Twitter but these aren’t really apps but optimized web interfaces (note: I couldn’t connect my GPRS in this, so no mobile internet tested). And the best part: This isn’t a 3G phone, so the front camera isn’t gonna do any video calling.

Apart from that the QWERTY isn’t great either. Better than the Samsung Corby TXT for sure, but when I compare it to my E63, it is nowhere in competition. The typing on the V1675 keyboard is slow and somewhat noisy. Perhaps this is due to the way the keys are cut out, see a comparison below:

The built quality is good but the plastic doesn’t feel A grade but expecting anything better at this price would be a crime. Camera or media isn’t anything particularly to speak about, its average. I didn’t even feel like putting the effort to upload a sample image from the phone to show ya . The optical trackball is my first experience here and it takes a little while to get used to, thats a nice attraction for this device.

In short, if you are looking for a expensive looking Dual SIM phone, your choice can well be the Videocon V1675. Remember: this ain’t a smartphone!

UPDATE:

WHY THE HELL DID I TAKE ALL THE EFFORT TO REVIEW THIS THING?

This isn’t a Videocon trying to copy Blackberry design, its just another Chinese phone with Videocon label on it. Just brought to my notice by a friend this thing runs a OS that is the same as a E71 knockoff that he has. See the images below (the phone on the right is not a E71 but a fake Chinese model).

Opera has released the final versions of its mobile web browsers – Opera Mini 5 and Opera Mobile 10. Opera Mini 5 is the mobile web browser for Java and BlackBerry handsets while the Opera Mobile 10 is for Symbin S60 and Windows Mobile devices. Opera Mini 5 was recently released for Google’s Android OS too. An iPhone version of the browser is also in the making. Opera Mini allows faster browsing by compressing the data upto 90% before it is sent to the phones. On the other hand Opera Mobile 10 is a full blown version of the Opera desktop browser. Both the browsers support tabbed browsing, ’speed dial’ bookmarks, power scrolling with touchscreen as well as physical keyboard support. The browsers also have a Opera Link feature that allows the user to sync the bookmarks between their desktop and mobile browser.

We met two of the company founders Sachin Ralhan and Rajat Sahni and also saw a dummy build of the Adam (no prototype . )

During the Notion Ink presentation we didn’t have too much new to listen to, but we had a long conversation with the founders on how they started (the story should come up on the HeadStart blog soon). A few things that we learnt were:

Adam would be the first device and would go on sale on Q3 2010

Notion Ink has 2 patents related to the swivel camera and the back side trackpad (check this Apple patent)

the SDK would launch soon and they expect to have 1000 apps live on launch

Questions regarding possible patent disputes were dodged with confidence

As many as 90 people are working with Notion Ink

Talks with major US carriers on for a tie up

Final version of the product should be out in 2 months (price might be revealed)

Not expecting to give everything in the first version and further developed 2nd gen can be expected

Company focus is not just tablets, but convergence

Adam would launch in Q3 2010

The tieups with Inventec, Foxconn and Compalcomm last year were for development of the product and a major achievement

Aircel has launched “Peek” – a physical QWERTY handset made specifically for emails. Aircel claims that Peek is the thinnest email device ever. Peek can support upto three email accounts at a time. The email clients supported are Gmail, Yahoo!, Hotmail and all POP3 or IMAP accounts.

Peek supports PUSH email which allows automatic retrieval of new mails. The attachments supported are Microsoft Word, Excel, PDF and all image files. The screen on this device is 2.5″ QVGA with no touch support. The battery on the device is good to last for 2 to 3 days on a full charge, for ‘average’ email users. Aircel Peek is priced at Rs. 2999 which sounds quite affordable. Other charges involve a Rs. 897 for email access for first 90 days and Rs. 299 per month hence. The device would be available in two colors – Red and Black.

The rental charges per month might happen to be a deal breaker as Aircel charges only Rs. 98/month for unlimited GPRS on mobile. Mobile users can easily configure multiple email accounts to their handsets, which BTW is also used for making calls (unlike Peek)

For more details on the device, check Aircel Peek’s official webpage.
Similar Posts:

It started out as a low-cost touchscreen device and is now spiralling into a rather vast family that has everything from total touchscreen to a non-touchscreen and touchscreen-QWERTY avatars. Samsung’s Corby might have boosted the company’s handset sales and redefined what people expect from devices in the lower-middle price segment, but it seems to be in danger of spinning out of control. As of now, we have close to half a dozen different Corby handsets and while the ones on the lower end will appeal to the value-for-money crowd, the higher-end affairs, like the Corby Plus and the Corby Pro, are getting into smartphone territory.

Some people would say there’s nothing really wrong with that, but I think that Sammy might just need to rethink its strategy here. A high end phone coming out with a lower cost version (like all the Minis seen nowadays) might appeal to consumers but try the same thing in reverse and the stark fact is that high-end users are unlikely to invest in a brand that is associated with a value-for-money proposition rather than high performance. And that is exactly where the Corby range could stumble – there are already users who are opting for Samsung’s own Omnia Pro B7320 over the Corby Pro, simply because the former is considered a smartphone and the latter is not, even though it offers similar functionality (QWERTY keypad, GPS, lots of connectivity options, push mail and the like).

Another instance of where the Corby Pro and Plus are getting sidelined by Samsung’s own handsets is the case of the GalaxySpica, Samsung’s low-priced Android handset. It is one thing to spar against other manufacturers, quite another to face off against your own handsets, and the Corby range seems to be trying to gobble Sammy’s own (the Star’s sales have dipped since its release, according to one distributor). P&G might have made it big by launching brands that competed with each other, but we cannot see that model really working in the mobile handset segment. We really think that Samsung should be trying to strengthen the original Corby to take on the likes of the LG Cookie Pep, Inq’s new Facebook phone and Nokia’s 5233, instead of waging war on its own. Of course, we daresay someone at Samsung knows better. But on the surface, it would seem Samsung is overplaying its Corby hand.

The wait for iPhone 3GSs official unveiling in India has been way too long and event the most die hard Apple fans that I know have given up and purchased a 3GS from the grey market already. However we now hear (or rather our friends over at Fonearena ) that the iPhone 3GS would be launched by Apple in India tomorrow i.e. 15th March 2010 with 4 operators. To my surprise Airtel has been dropped off according to this rumor. Last year we had seen Vodafone actually pushed iPhone aside and promoted Blackberry, but then given the market size you never know if Airtel dumped iPhone or its Apple taking the call! This time around Vodafone, Reliance, Aircel and Bharti would carry the phone officially in India (remember its still a rumor).

The issue now isn’t what price Apple would launch the iPhone 3GS for or if Bharti would offer 3G plans for the same or not – the iPhone 4G expected in June motivates people to wait a little more (you can’t blame them for their patience, Apple!). Just yesterday (before I heard this rumor) I happened to discuss with a friend about the iPhone 4G and he immediately shelved his 3GS plans . Does Apple really expect to sell 3GS in India with the iPhone 4th generation expected to be out (atleast in US) by June end?

Thx Varun

The IEEE fest of Student Branch of BVCOE, FERVOUR, is organized on an annual basis. This extravaganza witnesses some truly eye catching events and is held on a large and magnanimous scale. With a wide spectrum of activities, the fest draws massive participation not only from numerous Delhi and NCR colleges, but also from premier institutes all over the country.

The fest encompasses events ranging from technical to managerial, from literary to informal; thus providing the students with a perfect opportunity to portray their vivid capabilities and showcase their talents in various fields of learning.

Fervour’10 – The 4th Annual Festival is to be organized by the IEEE Student Branch, BVCOE from 12th-14th March 2010.

They, as engineers, are concerned about the technology been developed by them and its impact on the environment. It is needless to talk about what is Global Warming anymore. Now is the time to act for it. Hence, the branch has decided to dedicate this festival to the theme of “Green & Clean”. The theme is in sync with the current environmental challenges faced by the entire world.

Fervour 2010 is a step in this direction, which aims not only at creating awareness among the student community, but also at making the efforts to involve them in environment–friendly activities.

LG is out with a refresh to its successful touchscreen series Cookie. Its amazing to see how companies like Samsung and LG have seen a great market in the low end touchscreen market after the iPhone came and swept the smartphone industry. The LG Cookie Pop would give competition to the Corby range and hopefully keep up the momentum that Cookie KP500 had set (yes the Cookie range has got new blood after a little delay IMO).

Design:

In this segment, what sells more than the features is the looks. LG has gone with a very simple bar shaped design, but managed to keep the phone housing a 3.0” screen very handy and compact. This thing weights just 87 gms and you will actually feel that when handling the phone. The buttons on the side have some chrome and all of them are pretty clickable and neatly placed. Press the camera button the the right once to open up favorite apps and long press to go to the camera mode. The button on the front enables a lot of single key operations like return to home screen, answer or disconnect a call etc. On the top you have the power button which also performs the wake / sleep function.

Features:

Cookie Pep has a 3MP camera but misses out on Flash & autofocus, has EDGE but no WiFi / 3G, has a large enough touchscreen but resistive. If you haven’t go it yet, be clear that its a low cost touchscreen phone and not a super smart phone. You would do well by limiting your expectations from the handset. The resistive touchscreen is well optimized for finger input and IMO works better than the Samsung Corby / Star or even the Nokia 5800. However you just can’t compare it to a capacitive touchscreen.

Cookie POP allows Bluetooth AD2P music output and you can add Micro SD (SDHC) cards to extent memory. Opera Mini works on this and you would do much better with it, than the stock web browser. However typing on the onscreen keyboard is a pain, specially for an iPhone addict like me. With the narrow touchscreen, this was expected, but do not see yourself doing great texting on this. In portrait mode the keyboard is a T9 / multipress and in landscape mode its a full QWERTY (my advice, stay away from the QWERTY – its horrible). The music player and standard features are usable but I find the interface slow, not in terms of responsiveness but the notifications that pop up. Like if you delete a sms, it would waste around a second just giving your a ‘Deleted’ notification. Just like the Corby, even LG is missing a smart OS in the low end touchscreens even though they managed to extract better performance from the touchscreen (they had to, LG supplies LCD’s to Apple).

The 900mAh battery works ok and frankly I didn’t get to much time to test it out thoroughly. However the specs sheet quotes a average 3hour + talktime. The camera quality is nothing great and does strictly OK. Here are a few sample images taken from the Cookie Pep camera:

Test image from LG Cookie Pep camera

Round up:

LG Cookie GD510 (referred as POP or PEP) will await reinforcements in the form of LG Cookie Fresh and Plus, while competing fiercely with the original Corby. If you are looking for a choice between the Samsung Corby or the LG Cookie Pop – the decision would to quite an extent depend on what looks you like? The trimmed, light weight, elegant looks of the LG or the flashy and bright Corby?

As this is Oscar week, we will just start this post with an instance from Jerry Maguire in which football star Rod Tidwell tells his agent Jerry Maguireto shut up and “show him the money!” Well, we can understand how he felt after hearing Sony Ericsson make YET another comment about the Xperia X10. We first heard of the Android-driven device in early November when we were told it would be available in Q1 2010. At the recent MWC in Barcelona, we were shown Mini and Mini Pro versions of the device and told it would be coming a bit later.

And NOW we have a Sony Ericsson spokesperson telling CNET that it could come in the second half of the year with a new version of Android. Honestly, we were very impressed by the specs of the X10 (a 8.1 MP shooter, 4.0 inch touchscreen, and every connectivity option in town) but the inordinate delay in its arrival is really making us wonder if like the original Xperia, it would be actually outdated by the time it arrived. It must be one of the few smartphones in cellphone history to have three different avatars, none of which happen to be in the market.

So allow us to paraphrase Rod Tidwell and say, “Enough talk, Sony E. Show us the X10 in the market. Please!”

When technology advances and we develop simpler mechanisms, the devices keep getting more economical. They end up making what is called as exclusive luxury goods . 4N is a similar unaffordable luxury watch from designer François Quentin.

The watch has been made of mechanical gears. It consists of three discs with different numbers engraved on them. The plates rotate to show the exact time in four digits (4N = four numbers). The discs are made of aluminum or titanium alloy. Only 16 of these designer watches would be available which adds to the exclusivity. The price is not yet known and when it would be announced, it won’t be worth asking. Though it might be unaffordable; I still love the concept and the design of this watch.

I’m still wondering whether the watch shows time in the digital or the analogue format??? Probably you would like to take a guess at it. Please go ahead and express what you feel about the phone. We would love to hear what you have to say about this watch

Samsung has announced that it would be releasing its slider eReader this spring. Samsung E6 would be released in partnership with Barns and Noble. The Barns and Noble partnership would give E6 users access to more than a million e-books, e-magazines and e-newspapers.

Barns and Noble already has its own eReader – the Nook in stores. The difference between the two eReader lies in their pricing. While the Nook is priced at $259, Samsung E6 would be retailing at $399. Below is a quick look at the specifications of the Samsung E6 -

6” E-ink display

600 x 800 resolution with 8-Gray scale

E-pub, PDF/a, TXT, BMP and JPG format support

text-to-speech (TTS)

Wi-Fi

Bluetooth 2.0

microSD card support upto 16GB (internal memory 2GB)

E6 is a slider with all the control buttons and front speakers hidden under the screen. The Nook’s color display may pose a major competition within the partnership model for E6. The E6 houses a EmoLink technology which allows its users to share content between Samsung eReader devices. E6 comes with a electromagnetic resonance (EMR) stylus pen which allows its users to take notes on the compact touchscreen.
