What do you do when you don’t have enough followers on Twitter and don’t have time to search for people of similar interest on Twitter? Simple. You pay £50 to uSocial and they bring 1000 followers to you.

The Australian social media marketing company, uSocial has launched this new service to track followers for you on Twitter. The company tracks 1000 followers for you at a fees of £50. uSocial searches for people who have common interest to those of their customers. Then uSocial recommends those users to follow their customers. It depends ultimately on the user to decide if he/she would want to follow the recommended person or not.

An estimation from uSocial says that each potential follower on Twitter is worth 5p to business. uSocial estimates this value from the amount of sales and advertising revenue that would be generated by these followers.

Some people though believe that such practice would increase the amount of spam on Twitter. Personally I have experienced that getting real people, who really read your tweets and relate to it are much better than mass followers. Hope uSocial gets its strategy right. Debatable topic though …

Do you think that paying and getting followers on Twitter would be useful?

Sony Ericsson is making some real news with 2 exciting leaks. First being a Android based SE Xperia series model ‘Rachael’ (which might well be the first Android by Sony Ericsson) and a unique concept phone KiKi.

Rachael seems to be a Xperia branded full touchscreen smartphone with no physical QWERTY (unlike the Xperia 1 and upcoming Xperia X2). Rumored specs reveal a Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon platform processor running at 1GHz speed (same as the Toshiba TG01), 3D graphics capabilities, 8Mp camera etc. This would mostly launch with Android 2.0.

On the other hand KiKi is something alien, with a glass display that has the screen projected on it. No much physical buttons, probably they will also be projected. Not sure if this can be a full featured iPhone killer types, but something different!

The 19 year old young boy who made big news by being the first to unlock the original iPhone two years ago, is again hitting the headlines with his jailbreak software for the iPhone 3G S. George Hotz, named his jailbreaking softare “purplera1n”.

Hotz has made his software awailable to the public for download through his website. The beta version is currently availabe for windows only but Hotz promises to release a Mac version soon through his blog.

The users need to be running the iPhone Software 3.0 (which is what the 3G S runs by default) and the latest version of iTunes. The jailbreaking is done in just a few easy steps. Connect your iPhone normally. “Click “make it ra1n”. Wait. On bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app. Hopefully you’ll figure out what to do from there” Hotz explains in his blog.

For the iPhone Dev team, Hotz sends a message through his blog. “Normally I don’t make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn’t worth waiting because you might have the “last” hole in the iPhone. What last hole…this isn’t golf. I’ll find a new one next week. Also your purplera1nyday files ensure that you can always get back to a jailbroken state, so if you have it it’s just a matter of tools.” says Hotz

This boy was the first to unlock the iPhone and put it for auction on eBay. But had to remove the sale because of fake biddings making the auction reach sky high $100 million. Later, the then 17 year old Hotz, exchanged the iPhone for a Nissan 350Z and three unlocked iPhones.

For those of you who do know, Jailbreaking is done to allow your iPhone to run those applications which are unofficial and are available outside the Apple’s App Store (in simple terms this brings Icy and Cydia store to your iPhone). While unlocking is done to allow the iPhone to run on wireless networks that the phone is not licensed.

via [AppleInsider]

With a total of 415 million cellphone connections India is the fastest growing mobile market globally. Just a year back this number was at 277 million. Such growth comes with its own side effects. Having exhausted the 9 series, mobile operators in India are all set to issue mobile connections beginning with ‘8′. Janta would surely find this weird, having being accustomed to mobile nos starting with no 9 for over 10 years now. But this would still be better than 11 digit mobile nos that will might slip in 2010.

Department of Telecom and TRAI are burdened with many things. From the upcoming implementation of number portability to 3G auctions, banning of Chinese phones to ensuring privacy (Do Not Call etc), the mobile markets exponential growth keeps the regulators busy.

Mozilla has released the latest version of its web browser, the Firefox 3.5. Mozilla claims that Firefox 3.5 is the “Fastest, Safest and Smartest” Firefox yet. Firefox is the World’s second most used web browser & this new release is spreading across the internet like a wildfire.

The new web browser, released an year after the previous version, hit the one million download mark in just few hours after its release. Mozilla has launched a real-time tracker that tells you the current download status of Firefox across the world. As of now, Firefox has already crossed more than 3 million downloads. Firefox 3.5 is most popular amongst the users in US, Germany, Japan and France.

Released in 70 different languages, Firefox 3.5 has many upgrades to look up to. Firefox 3.5 comes with a new JavaScript Engine – TraceMonkey. TranceMonkey supports running of heavy JavaScript on web pages like meebo or Google Docs.

Another interesting feature is the Local Aware Browsing. Local Aware Browsing requires your permission for Firefox to track you according to your IP address. The browser can then provide you greater personalization and local access websites.

For the web developers, Firefox 3.5 has the support for HTML 5 and downloadable fonts. HTML 5 allows the web developers to embed audio and video elements directly into the HTML pages. While downloadable fonts would open up lots of customized fonts for the web pages.

Going the Google Chrome way, FF 3.5 now supports Tab Tearing. Tab Tearing is the feature wherein a tab can be separated from the browser in order to start in its own dedicate window. The same is applicable in reverse. Firefox also has the feature called Recently Closed Tabs and Recently Closed Windows. The feature allows the users to open accidentally closed tabs and windows.

Private Browsing is also on offer now. Private Browsing is the browsing session for which Firefox would not remember any of your browsing history. Which means no browsing history, download history, temporary Internet files or cookies for the Private Browsing session. Firefox 3.5 also includes a command called “Forget about this site”. The command deletes all the history related to that particular website. This is good for you know WHAT

Just upgraded to v3.5 and hoping it can bring me back to FireFox (I gave Chrome a try for a month).

Download FF 3.5 from Mozilla

Palm surely wants to go global and cash in on Pre success to the fullest. A GSM version of the Pre has been spotted with a SIM card slot. Though it is expected that Palm would give priority to the UK market for its GSM version, Asia might get its hands on the Pre soon enough.

In US, currently the Pre is tied to Sprint and Verizon is expected to get it early next year. We are also hearing from our sources in India that Vodafone is planning to launch the Pre later this year. Palm is surely here to stay!

This one is for all of you out there who would love to see some sort of tech involved in the simplest of things in life (myself included!). The vacuum tube chess has been developed by an artist Paul Fryer. Looks like the artist developed only seven of these and that too a year back. So, there are hardly any chances of this one getting into your hands. You can appreciate the work though in through the comments.

Wonder if these heat up while playing. That could invent a new game in which you have to move each tube as many times as possible before burning your hand.

There have been more than a million rumors of a playstation phone that have come and gone in the last two years. And just like each and every one of those rumors, this one too looks like Sony is really working on a play station phone “this time”.

Japanese tech daily, Nikkei reports that Sony is working on assembling a new team for the development of a new phone that combines Sony Ericsson’s mobile technology and the Playstation gaming. The project team would be set up next month and would start designing the new ‘playstation phone’.

If the rumors do have some potential to come true, the playstation phone would definitely make the iPhone a run for its money.

In an attempt to attract upgrades from XP and Vista to the new Windows 7, Microsoft has decided to keep Windows 7 pricing below that of Windows Vista. Microsoft has also decided to keep the pricing for new Windows 7 lower enough to lure new customers.

On Thursday, Microsoft finally came upto a pricing decision for its new generation OS. The decision comes as the outcome of learning from the pitfalls of Windows Vista pricing.

Microsoft will be launching three Windows 7 editions in the global market- Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate. At $120, Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade would cost the customers about $40 less than the Vista Upgrade offered two years back. The stand-alone version would be available at $200 with a similar drop in the pricing. There has been no changes in the pricing of Windows 7 Professional and Windows Vista Professional. Which means that Professional edition of Windows 7 would also cost $200 for an upgrade and $300 for the new copy. Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade would cost $220 as compared to the Windows Vista Ultimate’s $260. The new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate would cost $320, $80 less than Vista Ultimate’s pricing 2 years ago.

The customers willing to pre-order the new Windows OS would have to pay even less. The Windows 7 starts shipping on October 22. Those who pre-order their copy of Windows 7 between 26th June to 11th July would have to pay just $50 or $100 for an upgrade to Home Premium or Professional edition respectively. Companies like HP are also giving Windows 7 free of cost or for a nominal fees for all the PCs sold from 26th June till Windows 7 come preloaded in the new computers.

Along with windows Vista customers, those customers still using the Windows XP would also be allowed to upgrade to Windows 7. So these customers would not have to spend their money on a new copy. But the upgrade would be a new install and not just an upgrade to XP, as available for the Vista users.

“Overall, customers will be paying less and getting more with Windows 7,” said Brad Brooks, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for Windows consumer marketing. “This includes fun new features such as HomeGroup, Device Stage, Aero Shake, Snap, Peek, Jump Lists and our completely redesigned Windows Taskbar (one of my favourite new features in Windows 7 today). These new features make your PC simpler and much easier to use.”

While the Apple’s Mac OS X Snow Leopard upgrade would be available for just $24 and a month prior to the availability of Windows 7, looks like the customers considering the upgrade pricing for their decisions would definitely find Apple’s deal more appealing.

It has only been 18 days since the Palm Pre was introduced and the Palm App Catalog has crossed the one million download mark. With an estimated 150,000 Pre handsets sold in the market, each one of these handsets have managed to download an average of 7 applications. Every single application has been estimated to be downloaded about 33,800 times on an average. With just 30 applications available in the App Catalog to a single device (Palm Pre) and only to the number 3 carrier of US, the numbers look more than impressive. With still a lot of customers waiting in the Que for their Palm handsets, looks like the APP Catalog is all set to beat the records of Apple’s App Store.

The new Apple 3G S costs just a few $$$ extra to Apple even after several upgrades from the iPhone 3G. iSuppli, the company known for tearing down gadgets and then estimating the cost of each component one at a time, has estimated the cost of new iPhone 3G S to be $179. Which means that the new iPhone costs Apple just $5 more than the iPhone 3G.

The 16GB iPhone 3G S costed $172.46 with a manufacturing cost of $6.50, making a total of $178.96 per handset. Though the cost given by iSuppli does not include other costs such as the cost to develop iPhone software, royalty paid, packaging & shipment, advertisements & promotions to name a few. However AT&T pays quite higher to Apple than $199 offered price tag offered to the customers. AT&T covers up the cost with the subscription cost and service revenues for the contract period.

“From a component and design perspective, there’s also a great deal of similarity between the 3G and the 3G S,” said Andrew Rassweiler, director and principal analyst, teardown services, for iSuppli. “By leveraging this commonality to optimize materials costs, and taking advantage of price erosion in the electronic component marketplace, Apple can provide a higher-performing product with more memory and features at only a slightly higher materials and manufacturing cost.”

The new iPhone has double the memory than that of the iPhone 3G. Apple has also upgraded the camera to 3.2Mp and some additional components like the magnetometer for the inbuilt digital compass. Toshiba sells the most expensive part of the new iPhone 3G S, the NAND flash memory at $24. While the cheapest part comes form Cirrus Logic which is the Audio Codec.

Looking at the iPhone 3G S sales and the profit Apple makes via the ATT kickbacks, we should be buying AAPL

I just hate losing those flash drives and buying a new one every month. I always wished to have a flash drive that could be carried in the wallet but still big enough not to be misplaced easily. Now here is something that would answer these concerns.

The ‘credit-card-thin’ wallet flash drive has been built by company named TopTech Products. This flash drive can be easily carried in your wallet as a normal plastic card. The dimensions are 3.4-inches x 2.1-inches x 0.11-inches.

The flash drive can store upto 4Gb of data and has support for USB 2.0 on Windows, Linux and Mac platforms. Availabe in five colours – clear, gray, orange, red and blue. At $24.99 I feel its good enough.

Airtel and HTC have introduced India’s first handset featuring the Google Android OS. And its not the G1 (thankfully) but the HTC Magic. Airtel would also be providing few utility based applications with the HTC magic – Portfolio Manager, Hello Tune Manager, Weather Channel, Mobshare, In-mobile search and City Search to name a few.

“Airtel has been at the forefront of innovation and customer delight in the Indian telecom sector. Being the first to bring the Android-powered HTC Magic to India further underscores our commitment to enrich the communication experience of all Airtel users,” said Raghunath Mandava, Chief Marketing Officer, Mobile Services, Bharti Airtel. “The HTC Magic presents a powerful mobile internet and multimedia experience that should drive the uptake of accessing the internet over mobile amongst Airtel users.”

“HTC is proud to partner with Airtel in launching the much-anticipated Android-powered HTC Magic in India. The HTC Magic opens up a whole new world of possibilities for people to enrich and customize their mobile phone. HTC has always been known for its industry firsts and technology advancements, and is thus a natural partner to Airtel.” said Jack Tong, Vice President, HTC Asia.

HTC magic features a 3.2″ TFT-LCD touchscreen with a 3.2 Mp camera and Trackball. It comes with a Smart Dialer and an on-screen keyboard. HTC magic would also allow free data download upto 100Mb to Airtel customers for the first six months. The phone is priced at Rs. 30,000 in India and will be available across all Airtel Relationship Centres and HTC resellers across 17 cities in India. It would be interesting to see how this lines up against the upcoming iPhone 3GS, which would incidentally be launched by Airtel (and Vodafone) itself.
