NOTSL Accepting Scholarship Applications

Each year the Northern Ohio Technical Services Librarians (NOTSL) awards scholarships to persons currently working in a professional, para-professional, or support position in a technical services area in an Ohio library, or to persons currently taking technical services related course work/training who plan a career in Technical Services.

NOTSL is now accepting applications for scholarships to fund activities that take place in the calendar year, from January to December of 2009.

One of these scholarships will be designated as the Jane Myers Cataloging and Metadata Scholarship and will be awarded to an individual whose focus is primarily on Technical Services Librarianship as it relates to cataloging. Applicants need not indicate that they are applying specifically for this scholarship, but only applicants who meet the Myers Scholarship's criteria will be considered for this special designation."

Metadata Specialist, Overdrive (Valley View, Ohio)

Principal Duties:
The Metadata Specialist engages with digital media suppliers and coordinates the delivery and upload of supplier metadata and content files (eBook, audio book, music, video, and software) to the OverDrive database. The main day-to-day responsibility of the Metadata Specialist is to prepare data received from suppliers for import into the OverDrive system. The Metadata Specialist also addresses publisher questions, creates and maintains publisher documentation, and coordinates the timely and recurring upload of content to the OverDrive system.

Job functions:
1. Metadata prep – working with data to fit OverDrive’s standards for batch upload. This includes Compilation, normalization and/or \\\'clean-up\\\' of supplier metadata
2. Quality assurance of publisher-supplied metadata.
3. Supplier Support – work with suppliers addressing questions and / or issues with ingestion, metadata or format files.
4. Answer and resolve publisher requests utilizing a support ticket management system.
5. Respond to problems that come to technical support utilizing a support ticket management system.
6. Communicate publisher concerns to technical staff.
7. Other duties as assigned.

Qualification/Requirements:
Minimum job requirements & skills:
•1 – 3 years of related experience
•Bachelor’s Degree (in Library Science or related field)
•Excellent communication skills
•Computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite); expert user of Microsoft Excel
•Understanding of web-browsing and Internet use
•Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and working knowledge of basic HTML is a plus
•Strong organizational, comprehension, proof reading, problem-solving skills are required.
•Must be willing to learn, work, and research independently, with minimal formal training. •Detail-oriented and customer-focused.
•Ability to work in a team environment under deadlines.
•Written and oral communication skills are essential; the ability to convey complex information concisely and clearly. Previous customer service and/or project management experience is preferred.
•Non-English language skills are a plus.
•Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with client contacts, outside vendors/contractors, and internal staff.
•Ability to respond to common inquiries from customers and others within organization.

Call for Nominations

ALAO TEDSIG seeks nominations for the first annual TEDDY Award. This award recognizes an individual's significant contributions to the technical, electronic or digital services fields. Contributions may include service,innovative practices, presentations, publications, and leadership in the profession.

TEDSIG Co-Chairs will award the TEDDY during the ALAO Annual Conference. Along with an award plaque the recipient of the TEDDY will receive two free registrations to a future TEDSIG spring meeting workshop, one for themselves and the other for a colleague or library school student of their choice, and TEDS, the TEDSIG mascot.

To be eligible for the TEDDY, the nominee must be a current ALAO member, who as worked in or is currently working in an Ohio academic library in the area of technical, electronic, or digital services. To nominate an individual please provide the following information:

Responsible for all copy-cataloging and original cataloging of added materials; provide patrons in-depth subject assistance, bibliographic instruction, and other reference services; assist in developing and maintaining collections; act as subject liaison as assigned. -Download and export available bibliographic records from OCLC for all print and non-print materials added to the collection, verifying accuracy of LC classification and subject and descriptive cataloging
-Download bibliographic record and table of contents files from OhioLINK as necessary.
-Perform original cataloging of all materials formats; assign and verify classification, subject headings, and name headings, ensuring quality control using online systems, and submitting original bibliographic records to OCLC Worldcat; purge system of outdated materials and documentation; update online catalog to reflect current holdings by call number, title, and subject.
-Maintain and update catalog to reflect current holdings; barcode and produce labels for added materials; delete withdrawn materials; edit bibliographic and item records as necessary.
-Maintain pro-active liaison relationships with assigned academic departments by helping develop and weed those areas in the collection, providing special bibliographic guides and advice, teaching special sessions as requested, and assisting with accreditation visits as appropriate.

The successful candidate will possess a Master’s degree in Library Science, previous relevant experience in an academic library, the ability to multi-task and work within a diverse academic community, and the ability to work some evenings and weekend hours. Cataloging experience preferred.
