Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled for November 7^thand 8^th. During your conference, you will have an opportunity to hear about your child’s progress in academic, social, and emotional development and to learn about strengths and special abilities demonstrated in the school setting. Conferences also provide a chance to establish mutual goals with your child’s teacher to give
additional support in areas of growth. You will have an opportunity to ask specific questions about the curriculum and an opportunity to get to know your child’s teachers in a collaborative and friendly atmosphere. The following are a few “helpful hints”:

Talk to your child prior to conferences. Let them know that you have the opportunity to meet with their teacher so that you all are involved in their success!
Your child’s teacher will have a lot of information to share. Make a list of specifics you would like to discuss as well so that you can make the best use of your time together.
Please be on time so that you can follow the schedule which has been set up. We want for you to have your full allotted time!

Holiday Market- December 7, 2013

POSTED: by Melissa Stewart on October 28, 2013. Kids’ Holiday Market is Saturday, December 7th from 9:00am to 2:00pm at the Primary School. If you’ve been to the Holiday Market in years past, you know it’s a great opportunity for your children to experience the fun of independently selecting and wrapping gifts to surprise family and friends over the holidays. “Elves” (high school and middle school volunteers) will help the younger children shop while 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders can try shopping by themselves.

There will be a wide range of inexpensive gifts ($0.40 – $15) for everyone on their shopping list. Plus, students will have an opportunity to give back to the community by donating non-perishable food items to help replenish a local food pantry. Whether your kids are in the Primary School, or if they have moved along to the Elementary School, giving and friendship are in store at the 2013 Kids’ Holiday Market, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 7th at the Primary School!

Please consider volunteering for a 2 hour shift at the Holiday Market. It is through your support, we are able to continue providing wonderful events for our students. Click on the link below to sign-up.

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week

During the week of October 22^nd through October 25^th, our district will be celebrating “Red Ribbon Week”. This is a time set-aside annually to educate individuals, families, and communities on the destructive effects of drugs and the positive alternative life choices available to our youth and adults. The Celebration provides an opportunity to re-examine what is happening in our families, our schools and our communities.

The Red Ribbon Celebration began in 1985 after the assassination of U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency agent Enrique Camarena. Enraged Americans and young students in his hometown began wearing red ribbons in his memory. The message of the red ribbons was simple: Take a stand against the loss of life and energy due to drug use. That message and its symbol, the red ribbon, spread rapidly. In 1989, Ohio Parents for Drug Free Youth initiated the Red Ribbon Celebration in Ohio. The Celebration has become the annual catalyst for no tolerance of drugs in our schools, work places and communities.

Red Ribbon theme days are listed below. Hopefully both students and staff will participate and show their support and stand against drugs!

Red Ribbon Week Schedule

Tuesday, October 22^nd	Introduction to Red Ribbon Week: History of Red Ribbon Week read over announcements and anti-drug statements and facts posted around IHES I’ve got better things to do than drugs Students will have a discussion in community circles.
Wednesday, October 23^rd	We walk away from drugs. Wear tennis shoes and workout clothes.
Thursday, Oct. 24^th	Team up against drugs! Wear something showing support for your favorite team or group while “teaming up” against drugs.
Friday, Oct. 25^th	I pledge to be drug free. Wear red.

Counselor Chats

Once a quarter, students will attend “Counselor Chats” during their regularly scheduled Technology time. October’s Counselor Chat for all grade levels includes a whole group lesson on conflict management. Third grade students will be introduced to “I statements”, a clear way to communicate how you feel and what you need. Fourth and fifth grade students will identify effective communication techniques and practice peaceful solutions to a conflict.

We all bring different emotions to a situation. Our practice will be to manage our response and allow for a peaceful and productive solution!

Celebrate the Joy of Reading with Books by the Banks

Books by the Banks is sponsoring the Cincinnati USA Book Festival on Saturday, October 12, 2013 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm at the Duke Convention Center (5th and Elm Street, downtown Cincinnati). The event is advertised as a chance for young and old to celebrate the joy of reading. Over 100 local, regional, and national authors will be present to discuss the writing process and their books. Admission is free.

R.J. Palacio, the author of Wonder, will be there. Our fifth grade students just completed reading this engaging and moving novel.

Global Parent Network Dinner

The Global Parent Network Annual Dinner was held on Friday, October 4, 2013, at Indian Hill Elementary School. Families celebrated our multi-cultural student body with food, music, art, and crafts. Dinner was served in a pot-luck fashion with food representing various countries. Thank you to PTO for supporting this event and to Niharika Singh for helping to facilitate this event.

SEEDS

Safe Environments for Educating Diverse Students (SEEDS) is the school-wide character education program at IHES. Our philosophy is that character education cannot be gained in a single assembly or monthly announcements. For students to deeply understand and embody values, character education must be embedded into the daily school activities. There seven key components to our SEEDS program:

Welcome Board- A written message to greet the students each day.
Greeting- Teachers start the day in the hallway/doorway to greet each student individually.
Agenda- A posted agenda shares the activities of the day so students can orient themselves throughout the day.
Community- A daily time for students to gather as a group and connect as a cohort to develop supportive and empathetic relationships.
Lifeskills- Values that are defined and incorporated within instruction to define the skills necessary for academic, social, and emotional success.
Taught procedures/routines- Never assume that students know the expectation or rule. Rather, teach them with deliberateness as we do in other core subject areas.
Logical Consequences- An opportunity for students to consider how they can contribute to a solution (i.e., act of apology) when there has been a problem.

There are three main rules at IHES: take care of yourself, take care of each other, and take care of the environment. Students spend the first month of school defining these rules and building class consensus of expected behaviors. Often, teachers post a class motto or goal with the signature of each student to signify the ownership that students can have for maintaining a positive school environment.

This picture is an example of an activity to build community. Mr. Jeff Wells, fifth grade teachers, asked students work in teams to move across the lawn on a pair of boards. Job well done, fifth grade students.

Primary School and Elementary School Spotlight Variety Show

Calling all Indian Hill students in kindergarten through grade five. Consider auditioning for the Show of the Year, our K-5 2014 Spotlight Variety Show.

Display your talents when you perform in front an enthusiastic and supportive audience of family and community members. Auditions for acts are currently happening.

Be one of the fabulous emcees. Join a group of helpful backstage workers that help run the show and manage stage changes. Emcees and backstage workers should sign up now.

Ohio Achievement Assessment

On Tuesday, October 8^th , third grade students will be taking the Ohio Reading Achievement Assessment. Listed below are some test taking tips that may be helpful for our third graders.

●Get plenty of sleep the night before.

●Eat a good breakfast.

●Pay careful attention to directions.

●Don’t rush and stay calm.

●Check your work!

We encourage you to not have your child arrive late during our test day. If your child is sick, please do not send him or her to school just to take the test. We will arrange for make-up testing.

Unified Arts Night was a “SHINING” Success

On Friday, May 17, 2013, parents and students gathered at Indian Hill Elementary School for the Unified Arts Night, “Shine”. The hallways were adorned with artwork from our students including a sculpture created by our students in the courtyard. Our visitors were treated to a theatrical performance in Spanish. Students proudly showed their parents the programs within the technology curriculum that they like best. In the gymnasium, students and parents participated in five different stations, including the famous and well-loved Tarzan ropes. During this evening event our students were treated to our opening of the Media Center Archives which displayed artifacts from the past including a film strip projector, past yearbooks, and photos of the original schoolhouses of Indian Hill. And, our cafeteria and multi-purpose rooms were transformed into performance spaces for individual and group instrumental recitals. Thank you to the teachers, the students, and the parents for this special night to celebrate the Unified Arts program at IHES.
