• Aloha Joe, when you think pizza, the east coast mostly comes to mind. But if you are in Downtown Honolulu, the only place to be for pizza is definitely J.J. Dolans!
• The New York style pie served at J.J. Dolan’s is nothing shy of amazing. From the crust to the sauce and topped off with the cheese, oh, the cheese, there is no doubt that it is the best pizza joint on the island!
• Co-owner Jay Niebuhr has been making pizzas since 1994, and brings an old-school, East Coast sensibility to his craft. He’s a Jersey Shore kind of guy, but that hasn’t stopped him from putting Waialua asparagus and Maui sweet onions with some roasted red potato and garlic on his pies.
• A crowd favorite touch at J.J’s is that you can buy the cheese or pepperoni pizza by the slice for just $3—perfect for a quick lunch or pau hana!
• But if you are a pizza lover a whole pie is the way to go! The signature Giacomo with sausage, pepperoni, salami and olives or the Molto Formaggio with Havarti, brie, gouda, fontina mozzarella and parmesan is a six cheese delight and definite crowd pleaser!

• Aloha Joe, don’t you love it when you learn about a new restaurant? Well I have found a gem and it is tucked away in one of the most beautiful towns on Oahu!
• Cactus Bistro in Kailua is a celebration of the cuisines of the new Americas with Aloha, transporting the flavors, culinary traditions and techniques from Central and South America as well as Cuba, Puerto Rico and Mexico!
• My mouth is watering already!
• Offering the cuisines of the sun, land and sea, Cactus menu selections focuses on, local produce from the islands, Shinsato Farms pork from Kahalu’u, Kulana and Kuahiwi beef, veal, wild boar from the Big Island, and sustainably caught or farmed seafood from the island chain.
• Cactus puts a very large focus on the wines of Argentina, Chile, Peru and some small estates in Spain and Mexico. Traditional, and some untraditional, Sangrias are featured, including a signature frozen Sangria.
• Premium Rums, Tequilas and Piscos (sort of a South American Grappa) are carefully paired with fresh island herbs and tropical fruits, alongside non-alcohol selections like Horchata, Jaritos sodas, and fresh juices.

• Attention Aloha Joe, we have a brand new restaurant set to open this month!
• Honolulu’s dining scene will enter a new era when Vintage Cave opens Dec. 10 at Ala Moana Center.
• Inspired by the anthropological and artful discoveries within the Lascaux and Altamira caves, Vintage Cave will be located in Ala Moana Mall in what was formerly the Shirokiya store’s storage space.
• The 15,000 square foot transformed space features 150,000 bricks from Pennsylvania Brick Co., a custom Swarovski crystal chandelier crafted in Czechslovakia and assembled in Japan, the installation of Neolithic to fine art by Picasso and Michelangelo, and glassware by Lalique and Daum.
• The kitchen is led by Christopher Kajioka, who worked at Thomas Keller’s Per Se in New York City and Mourad Lahlou’s Aziza in San Francisco before coming home to open Vintage Cave. When the restaurant opens later this month, a prix fixe meal will cost $295 per person, plus tax and tip (add $100 for wine pairings). WOW!
• What will diners get you may ask for such a price? Well, a test run on Nov. 30 featured 26 dishes presented in 16 courses. The menu won’t be the same every time, Chef Kajioka said, adding that he may present different dishes to each table on any given night.
• Vintage Cave fans who opt for full membership will have access to private wine cellars, priority reservations and wine discounts. Membership starts at $5,000, with “Special” membership priced at $50,000 and “Charter” membership available for $500,000.
