I never really got into P!nk, but I have always, always been into weird remixes that incorporate 80s songs by the Eurythmics. For no reason, P!nk and RedMan teamed up to make this little gem, and I’ve been randomly listening to it more as of late. There’s really no good rip of this song in existence, and I don’t really know if you can find it on iTunes (y’arr) but here’s a poorly made YouTube video that happens to have a half-decent audio track slapped onto it:

Since P!nk is one of those artists that I’m fairly sure you’ve heard of, I’ll refrain from posting her MySpace page out of respect for your interweb skills. But seriously – if you can find this track out there, it’s hella good for bouncing around to when you’re walking to Dollarama.

Lupe Fiasco – The Show Goes On

Sorry for the hiatus – life got in the way!

Lupe Fiasco wasn’t always a rapper that blipped on my radar. He’d come up in mixes, I’d heard him at parties, and I’d seen the odd video on YouTube, but I didn’t own any CDs, and I’d never bought any of his songs on iTunes. The Show Goes On changed that.

I’ll admit, I have a soft spot for Modest Mouse. They’re just a great band to listen to when you’re doing pretty much anything. Now, I was skeptical when one random website called The Show Goes On the best song ever, but when I realized that it was mixed with a fire-roasted Float melody On by Modest Mouse, I started to care a lot more.

This song has to be one of the best feel-good rap songs I’ve heard in ages. I put the video on loop for weeks until iTunes decided to offer it as a download and then I listened to it on my iPod for weeks after that. Just do it:

The Ooks Of Hazzard – Kids (MGMT Cover)

I’ve saved this cover for last for a number of reasons. For one, I’ve never really listened to Bluegrass before, and this song prompted me to grab a few podcasts and dive in. Not necessarily my style of music, but it’s good to branch out and listen to a condensed version of a music genre that doesn’t normally grab your attention. Self-improvement, or something deep like that.

Secondly, Kids by MGMT is an all-around solid song. The original is really well written, and it’s always been my second favourite MGMT song after Electric Feel, but that’s another post all together.

Finally, I’ve waited on posting this because I wanted to save my favourite for last. This cover just utterly blew me away, as it really came out of nowhere. Bluegrass cover of MGMT? The band is called the Ooks of Hazzard? There’s more Ukuleles in it than there were original members of Broken Social Scene? I’m sorry…where do I sign up?

José González – Teardrop (Massive Attack Cover)

I came to this song rather randomly – it was playing during a particularly pensive point in an episode of House. I don’t remember what was happening, but there was a lot of uneasiness as to whether or not is was Lupus. Or something.

Anyway, Teardrop was the first Massive Attack song I heard back in the day, and it took me a bit to recognize this as a cover when I heard it. It seems too perfect. Interestingly, the original version of Teardrop (watchable in all its fetus-glory here) is the opening theme music for House, so I guess the cover is pretty fitting.

The video is a serious religious acid trip, but I like it. The song itself is brilliant, and much like the Obadiah Parker cover of Idioteque, it holds weight all on its own.

Obadiah Parker – Idioteque (Live)

So I’ve already covered Obadiah Parker once this week, but Idioteque is my favourite Radiohead song, and this cover just levels me.

There is absolutely nothing that I can say about this version of Idioteque that has any more effect than just listening to it. You can get it on iTunes for a buck, and you can definitely listen to it via YouTube.

Ted Leo – Since U Been Gone / Maps

Ted Leo is probably one of the most prolific artists that I don’t listen to enough of. I know I discovered Ted Leo & The Pharmacists in first year, but that I was just a naive child when faced with their back-catalog of music.

I’ve got a tendency to randomly put covers of Since U Been Gone on mix tapes I make for my girlfriend without realizing it, and this is still my favourite. Between Ted Leo just giving it on the guitar, to the seamless transition to Maps by the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs – it’s just magic.

Obadiah Parker – Hey Ya (OutKast Cover)

Sorry for the late kickoff to acoustic week. Today was a shizz-show, and I’ve had to catch up on things. Plus my internet conveniently decided to peace out for 2 hours earlier tonight.

I discovered Obadiah Parker, and Mat Wheddle purely via this cover, and it’s always been one of my favourite random-song-to-acoustic covers. I’ve got another Obadiah Parker song planned for later on this week.

There’s something about Mat’s voice, and the simplicity of reducing the Outkast studio production track to a single acoustic guitar that just makes this song incredible to listen to. It never fails to find itself on any acoustic mix-tape that I make, and I highly recommend giving it a listen.

Acoustic Week is coming

I was reading through Exclaim! last week, and they have a great section called Wood, Wires & Whiskey that’s all about country, folk, and bluegrass.

I came to the realization that there are a LOT of stellar acoustic covers of songs that I listen to on a regular basis, so I’m going to devote next week to looking at these. Stay tuned for the first post on Monday!

Chromeo – Tenderoni (MSTRKRFT Remix)

Chromeo is already a really solid band, and when you bring MSTRKRFT into the mix, there is only awesome that can come out at the end. Tenderoni is already a fantastic song, and the remix turns all the right buttons.

Victims of Science – The Device Has Been Modified

I love video games. I love music. When the two collide, I get happy in ways it is not polite to discuss in public. Portal was one of the best games I have ever played, and I always found GLaDOS to be an incredible character. The voice work (done by Ellen McLaine) was top notch, and it fits perfectly with this song.

To the best of my knowledge, Victims of Science have only produced this song, and it’s well worth the listen. Give it a shot:
