A big storm was brewing to the east so there were no gators or birds to be found.

<category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="A.E. January gives me a respite from the hectic pace of the holidays before the hectic pace of shows descends upon me.

Two events were in January, my show at Thornebrook Gallery in Gainesville Jan. 13 - 28, and Marion Cultural Alliance's "Artist Within" banquet last Saturday at the Ocala Country Club, which was all play since the work had been done. A great evening with friends that raised a lot of money for the arts in Marion County.

February continues the hiatus with only a couple of things scheduled for MCA's "Horse Fever" Fund Raiser. Then comes March!

My dear friend Susan Cassens and I are having a joint show at the A.E. Backus House in Ft. Pierce March 1 - 31. After the opening reception I head over to Wekiva State Park in Apopka for the week long paint out March 5 - 11. I get a week off then on to Epcot march 22-25.

April is packed too. Gainesville's Downtown Spring Arts Festival is April 14-15. I get 2 days to unpack the truck and repack for the Ft. Pierce "Souvenirs of Downtown" Paint Out April 18-21.

Oh yes, I do have a few family obligations like cake baking for my grand children's birthdays, cleaning house, cooking and.......painting

If you get by to see any of the shows or paint outs please say Hi.

Christmas Commission

I previously wrote about a painting I was commissioned to do as a secret Christmas present. Because it was a deep dark secret that very nearly got out - but that story can keep until another time - I couldn't post the finished painting until after Christmas.

Well, it is now near the end of January already so I thought I had better get back to keeping in touch with you all and post the image.

This is the entrance to the Eddie Woods Horse Farm in Ocala, Florida. It is a beautiful farm complete with barns filled with magnificent thoroughbred race horses and a world class training track. The rolling hills though out the property add just the right touch of tranquility.

Eddie's sweetheart Angela commissioned the 30"x40" painting. She instantly became my sweetheart when she said "I want the entrance gate to be prominent but I also want it to be a painting not a photograph." Music to an artists ears! She gave me permission to paint a landscape and put the gate in it.

Visiting the farm to gather reference material was exciting. Creating the painting was challenging. Getting to know Angela was a personal treat.

#2 New Giclee Reproduction

The Royal Poinciana Tree is spectacular when in full bloom. This event not only raises money for the arts but also raises awareness about the thriving arts community right here in Ocala and Marion County.

This is how it works: anyone interested in participating pays a stipend to MCA and tells the committee what type of artwork they would like to create. They can select an artist themselves or the committee can pair them with an artist who creates that type of art. Then the fun begins!

Ronnie (Veronica) King wanted to paint and work in oil so, I was lucky to get paired with her. Over a period of several months she came to Sabal Palm Gallery as often as her busy life would allow, mother of two, wife of a doctor and she is a lawyer also.

After much discussion Ronnie chose flowers as the subject of her very first painting. We worked from photographs and life (when I could find the flowers blooming). I soon learned she has natural talent and grasped the information quickly. The painting she created is outstanding...I can't wait for the unveiling this weekend.

All of the artworks created for the event are kept secret until the banquet. When Ronnie's family and friends see the painting I know they will be as proud of her as I am. And there is no doubt that her husband will outbid everyone else!

Vote "Sports Horse"

Vote for "Sports Horse"

Margaret Watts created "Ocali Sun" in the original Horse Fever Herd, "Brick City" in the current 10th Anniversary Herd and has offered this great design "Sports Horse" for the People's Choice competition. "Sports Horse" represents many of the sports offered to all the citizens throughout both the city and county and would be a wonderful addition to the 10th Anniversary Herd.

Thornebrook Gallery Exhibit Opens Friday

My show/sale titled "The Out of Towners" at Thornebrook Gallery in Gainesville opens this Friday, January 13 with a Reception 6 - 9 pm. Some of the paintings in the exhibit will go back into private collections, not to be on public view, and others will go to galleries and offered for sale. Paintings labeled "Artists Collection" will be available after the show closes. Contact me for details.

It has been an honor and privilege to have my work displayed in such a magnificent museum. The Appleton is certainly a "Crown Jewel" for Ocala and Marion County.

There is a great deal of behind-the-scenes work that goes into putting on a show of this type. My thanks go to Dr. John Lofgren, Director of the Appleton, Ruth Grim, Steve Specht, David Reutter and all those who helped make the show a success. You did an outstanding job.

I cordially invite all to see the exhibit before it is dismantled. Quite frankly, I don't know when I will have this many paintings together again. It has been great fun!!!!

Hopkins Prairie

Hopkins Prairie in the heart of the Ocala National Forest is a perfect example of Florida's unique landscape. . . flat, filled with varying sizes of lakes, tall grasses surrounded by thick forest of pines, oaks and sabal palms.

Walking the perimeter of the prairie, exploring it for the first time was exciting. This is one of the top ranked festivals in the South East United States. Artists from across the nation compete to be one of the 200 artists selected to participate.

I am happy to have been selected again this year to exhibit at FAFO. I will be in Booth # G11 on the north side of the festival in my usual spot.

FAFO artists offer a variety of things for gift giving from coffee mugs to fine art paintings. Come on out, enjoy the fall weather and get a head start on your holiday shopping.

In addition to my original oil paintings and reproductions I will have this years new ornaments. I have added two images to the collection: Tom Turkey and Great White Egret. Roseate Spoonbills were the first in the series last year. If you did not get one then, I will paint one for you on request.

Fall is Finally Here!!

Yes, it is finally Fall! Saturday was hot and muggy....surprising since last week's temps were on the cool side (for Florida that is). Lots of people turned out anyway. Sunday was pretty much the same with rain in the afternoon. As a result, the show officials allowed the artists to pack up about 3:30 pm. since patrons had already headed for shelter.

Even with the weather issues this is a nice show. Everyone is always upbeat and pleasant and the whole weekend has a festive atmosphere. People do come out and buy which is an even bigger plus for the artists. I had several low end things go home with collectors and then this delightful young man got my attention saying "I want to buy that one". I reached for the small print I thought he was pointing to and he said "no, the really big one". Yep it turned out to be a great weekend!

Art Festival at Thornebrook

Art Festival at Thornebrook is this weekend Saturday Sept. 24 and Sunday Sept. 25, 10 am to 5 pm each day.

This is a the finest small arts festival in North Central Florida. The collection of approximately 37 paintings must be delivered to the Appleton Monday morning, Sept. 26. The exhibit opens to the public Saturday, Oct. 1 and runs through Nov. 20. I have been asked to speak about the collection on Friday night, Sept. 30 at the Member Preview Reception....oh my, always makes me nervous. The "Rainbow Springs" painting posted here is in the exhibition.

Show Festival season is here and my first one is this weekend at the Thornebrook Village Festival in Gainesville, Sept. 24-25. In addition to finalizing the Appleton Exhibition I need to put together the collection I am taking to the Festival.

The herd of horses painted for the Horse Fever Project is to be unveiled and the artists introduced to the media Tuesday evening Sept. 20 at Signature Brands Corp. It will be exciting to see all the horses together, since only 5 are being shown to the public Friday, Sept. 29.

This is a wonderful way to start the busy week ahead.....cool temps with a slight breeze blowing, birds singing, steaming cup of java as I read the morning paper on my patio. Yep, I still like to sit quietly and read a newspaper I can hold and turn pages.

Hectic Pace

The last few months have been extremely hectic for me. But, I can only blame myself for over scheduling. I have a problem saying no, like many of you, which causes me to obligate myself to more than time will allow so I scramble to get it all done. Luckily I have an understanding husband, who after 44 years of marriage, puts up with me until the storm blows over.

I started the summer re-inventing my gallery, changing the name to Sabal Palm Art Gallery and Studio, taking on 2 new wonderful partners and throwing a fabulous opening party with champagne flowing throughout the evening. All the time and work that went into publicity paid off with several articles and photos in the newspaper as well as each of the Ocala magazines. The gallery was packed and a number of paintings found new homes.

Six Artists Six Prairies is a super project that I have been working on with 5 other professional artists. We are visiting and painting six prairies in the area with the goal of using our art to draw attention to Florida's unique prairies and the need to preserve them and to the importance of encouraging and supporting art and artists in the community. Look for our first show November 12 sponsored by Alachua Conservation Trust at Tuscawilla Cabin in Micanopy. A portion of the painting sales goes to non-profit conservation groups.

Then came painting "Horse Feathers" for Marion Cultural Alliance's Horse Fever fund raiser. Painting a life-sized horse and learning to use acrylics at the same time was no easy task. MCA also invited me to participate in another fund raiser for the arts called Artist Within. I am paired with a super lady and have been working with her as she creates a painting for the final auction.

One would think that was enough but nooooo, while all this was going on I was gathering paintings from several patrons around the state and creating new ones for my solo exhibition at the Appleton Museum of Art in Ocala. I had no idea that putting together a collection of over 35 paintings was such a big job.

Thornebrook Gallery in Gainesville invited me to participate in a group show this month, of course I said yes. The Thornebrook Village Art Festival is coming up and Fine Arts for Ocala Art Festival is in October. Yes, you will find me at both shows.

And that brings me to the holidays! I have plans for new Christmas Ornaments similar to the ones I made last year with Roseate Spoonbills on them. And, of course, all the other things planned for the gallery...you will hear more about that later.

Don't get me wrong....I am not complaining just explaining.

Painting Auction

"Power and Grace" 4"x12" Oil on Gallery Wrapped Canvas

This weeks auction painting is all about alligators. I painted it at Kanapaha Botanical Gardens in Gainesville, Florida. The birds and turtles saw him coming and scampered out of the way.

Alligators are definitely prehistoric creatures. That thick, leathery hide provides great protection. They move slowly on land unless attacking a bite to eat. In the water they are graceful and glide through the water.

Bids start at just .99 cents and shipping and packaging are FREE.
