Join us at this Ojai event!Ojai artists and authors Alice and Richard Matzkin will be the featured speakers at a Sunday Gathering at the Ojai Valley Museum on November 22, from 2 – 4 pm. The Matzkins will give a presentation about their recently published book, The Art of Aging: Celebrating the Authentic Aging Self, followed by a booksigning. In their beautiful book, painter Alice Matzkin and sculptor Richard Matzkin explore the experience of aging through their art, finding inspiration rather than despair. Admission to this Sunday Gathering is free.

The Art of Aging: Celebrating the Authentic Aging Self is a celebration of all that is beautiful about the aging process, challenging popular beliefs about the realities of growing older in words, paint and clay. Alice and Richard Matzkin grew afraid as they entered middle age and began experiencing wrinkles, gray hair and expanding waistlines. For the past fifteen years their work has focused on projects that confront their fear and curiosity about growing old. Together, they joined creative forces to present this groundbreaking and highly inspirational book, lavishly illustrated with 80 full-color plates.

Both Alice and Richard returned to art after a hiatus of raising children and pursuing a career. The internationally acclaimed artists share a studio next to their Ojai home. Now in their late 60s, the Matzkins feel this is one of the best periods in their lives. Their artwork and the writing of their book have given them a wider perspective and a deeper understanding of the meaning of life and an appreciation of the preciousness of now. The Matzkins have concluded that our elder years can be a time of ripening and harvest rather than stagnation and despair.

A selection of their artwork and a video can be viewed at the museum in conjunction with the current Ojai Celebrates Art exhibit. To make a reservation for the Nov. 22 Sunday Gathering call the museum at 640-1390. Go to www.ojaivalleymuseum.org and www.matzkinstudio.com for more information.

Shadow Puppets and Live Music- an original shadow play based on the classic fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen

Performed by Deb Chase and Mick Doherty Thumbelina is one of Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen's most delightful characters, a miniature girl born from a flower who has to find her own way in the world of nature. In this OST production Thumbelina journeys through a series of natural habitats to discover her home in the land of the flower fairies. Through the seasons of the year, Thumbelina has adventures with frogs in a pond, flying beetles in a tree, a swallow in the woods, a mouse in a field and a mole in his underground home.

The visual design of this colorful shadow play is drawn from Art Nouveau, the decorative art movement of the late 1800s which is characterized by its flowing organic lines and its nature themes. Art Nouveau had a resurgence in the 1960s, and the art and music of the Rock 'n Roll era inspired much of the visual and aural design of the play. While the plot of the play follows Andersen's story, the script supports a comic sub text linking music of the 1960's and '70s to Thumbelina's desire to find her home in a land of flowers. The live music is performed on hammer dulcimer, electric guitar, and an assortment of percussion and sound effects devices.

Oregon Shadow Theatre's production of "Thumbelina" has been awarded the UNIMA-USA Citation of Excellence in the Art of Puppetry. www.oregonshadowtheatre.com

"Hans Christian Andersen never had it so groovy. This new shadow puppet version of 'Thumbelina', his story about a tiny girl born from a flower, gives her adventures a Woodstock Generation twist.

A performance by Eric Bibb is an enriching experience, both musically and spiritually. His music, like his personality, is intimate, assured and passionate, drawing listeners into the moment more as participants than as spectators. His rich and sensitive vocals and lyrics provide a perfect balance to his fine fingerpicking technique. Purveying a beautifully realized and deftly accomplished soulful and gospel-infused folk-blues, Bibb has no problem blending various genres effortlessly, melding a traditional rootsy American style. As one critic wrote, “Eric’s singing and versatile guitar playing fuses a variety of genes to become a New World Blues.” His unique talent continues to draw critical acclaim around the world. Twice nominated for the W.C. Handy Awards and winner of the “Best Newcomer” title in the British Blues Awards, Bibb has been appropriately described as “discreetly awesome” and “a total original.” As his popularity escalates, earlier comparisons to legendary greats Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal are being replaced by quotes that speak to Bibb’s ability to “use standard blues ingredients to cook up something all his own.”
