Known locally as 'Mr Squash' Keith has been involved in squash for over 65 years.

Educated at Brighton College, Keith was British Junior Champion 1955-1958 and has subsequently competed through all the age groups in squash, and represented both Middlesex and Devon counties for 30 years. As a veteran (over-45) he captained the Devon county team to win the national title 1988/1989. In 1986/1987 Keith was British Veterans doubles champion. Keith has represented Great Britain at five Maccabiah Games in all age groups, in both individual and team events and won five gold medals. His passion doesn't stop there though, as well as supporting the youth development of squash (which he still coaches from age 6-18 years) he also supports sport in the community with a wide range of sponsorship for local teams.

Keith has been married to Rita for 48 years and they have two children - Samantha who lives in Canada, and Damian who lives in Brighton. In 2012 Keith was on the Queen's Honours List for an MBE which he received at the end of February. This was for his service to sport in the South West of England over many years.

Keith likes travel and cruising, jazz music, Spurs football team ... and a little squash!!

"I was at Brighton College from 1953 to 1957 in Durnford House. The Headmaster at the time was Ian Stewart who was a great inspiration and Geoff Lees was my squash coach. Mr Lees was certainly someone whose encouragement and guidance enabled me to reach the high standards I achieved over the years. I still attend the annual reunions (held at a bistro in London) with Graham Appleton and many rugby OBs of that era."

1. When you were at Brighton College, what did you want to be when you 'grew-up'?
My dream was to be a professional sportsman when I 'grew-up' ... regret failed miserably!

2. What are you now you've grown up?
I am now Managing Director and co-owner of a family run jewellers in the West Country with retail shops in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.

3. What is your best memory of school?
Representing the school squash team ... captaining the colts, cricket and rugby teams.

4. What was the best piece of advice you were given?
Do unto others as you would have done unto you.

5. What does your job involve?
My job involves managing five jewellery shops and watch galleries, motivating and training members of staff, designing innovative fine diamond and gem pieces, purchasing ethically sourced diamonds and coloured gem stones from all over the world.

6. What are the most challenging parts of your job?
Continuing to maintain the high standards of my Company, for which we are internationally renowned.

7. What have you done that you are most proud of?
I am most proud of recently receiving an MBE for my services to sport from Prince Charles at my investiture on 29th February 2012.

8. What is the single thing that would most improve the quality of your life?
An end to the pains in my joints (the result of sixty plus years of pounding on squash courts!!)

9. What are the three objects you would take with you to a desert island?
(1) my iphone with photos, memories and music
(2) the complete works of William Shakespeare (preferably in modern English), as it is incredibly fascinating how profound his understanding and knowledge of human nature was
(3) my squash racket and ball!!

10. How would you like to be remembered?
I would like to be remembered as a good family man ... a fair and considerate boss ... someone who has contributed and made a difference to people in the community.

OB of the Month

He won the silver medal in the Star Class. Part of the famous Ratsey sailing dynasty.

After attending Brighton College, he served an apprenticeship as a sailmaker with his father's company, and was associated with Ratsey & Lapthorn, the oldest sail manufacturer in the world for over 50 years. The firm, whose sails adorned Lord Nelson's fleet at Trafalgar as well as numerous America's Cup contenders, was founded in England in 1690 www.ratseysails.co.uk. In addition to his Olympic silver medal in 1932, he won the Prince of Wales Cup in 1939 for 14-foot dinghies, and the Prince Philip Cup for Dragon class in 1959.

Ratsey sailed with two America’s Cup challengers, the English J-boat Endeavour in 1934, and the 12-metre Sceptre in 1958. He was also responsible for introducing the sport of frostbiting – winter sailing in small boats – to England. He eventually moved to the United States after his retirement from Ratsey & Lapthorn, and became vice-president of Yardarm Sailmakers in Needham, Massachusetts, and continued to be active in international sailing circles.

sport

sailing

Andrew Cayley was in Bristol House under Peter Perfect from 1977 to 1982. After Brighton College he practised law in the south east of England joining the British Army in 1991 and serving as an infantry platoon commander in Belize (on attachment to the Kings Own Royal Border Regiment) and as a military prosecutor and command legal adviser in Germany and the United Kingdom.

Placed on loan service in 1995, as a military prosecutor, by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and the Ministry of Defence to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia he investigated and prosecuted war crime and crimes against humanity arising from the breakup of the former Yugoslavia in 1991. He was on the prosecution team that secured the first conviction for genocide in Europe since the Second World War. This was the prosecution arising from events in Srebrenica where upwards of 9000 men and boys were murdered in less than two weeks. He led the investigation against Colonel General Ratko Mladic – now on trial in The Hague - and the first prosecution of members of the Kosovo Liberation Army for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in 1998 in Kosovo.

In February 2005 he was appointed Senior Prosecuting Counsel at the permanent International Criminal Court by the Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo. Here he investigated war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Darfur Sudan. In 2007 the International Criminal Court charged the Deputy Minister of Interior of Sudan with serious violations of international humanitarian law committed in Darfur since 2003.

In 2007 after departing from the International Criminal Court the former President of Liberia, Charles Taylor, instructed him in his case before the Special Court for Sierra Leone. In 2009 he became the International Co-Prosecutor of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal in Cambodia.

Currently he is the International Co-Prosecutor of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal in Cambodia having been nominated by the Secretary General of the United Nations on 18 August 2009 and appointed by the King of Cambodia, His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni, to that position on 27 November 2009. On 29 February 2012 it was announced by the Ministry of Justice that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, on the advice of the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, has appointed Andrew to be Queens Counsel.

1. When you were at Brighton College, what did you want to be when you ‘grew-up’?
I cannot recall what I aspired to now. I loved History and English but my father wanted me to be a doctor so I recall a tension in what I wanted to do and what was expected of me.

2. What are you now you've grown up?
Still the thirteen year old boy who arrived at Bristol House in September 1977. I have been lucky and have been encouraged by some wonderful people. I am now a Queen's Counsel and currently International Co-Prosecutor of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal in Phnom Penh Cambodia.

3. What is your best memory of school?
Best memory is not being on the Friday evening drill list at Bristol House in freezing February. This punishment usually required climbing down into the "areas" outside the basement of the house and collecting the accumulated rubbish and rotting food for an hour. Other good memories include playing Mynheer Cornelis in The Strong are Lonely by Fritz Hochwalder in 1980 and also leading the CCF colour parade, as a CPO Coxswain, in 1982 before a Vice Admiral who's name I now forget. Also the yearly Bristol Christmas party which was always well done with skits and plenty of cheer.

4. What was the best piece of advice you were given
Don't get caught and if you do deny absolutely everything. Advice given to me by an unnamed but persistent offender in the UV in Bristol when I was a new boy. Times have changed I am quite sure.
Serious advice I still have framed on my desk :" The only guide to a man is his conscience the only shield to his memory is the rectitude and sincerity of his actions." From Churchill's Collected speeches I was given in the LVI.

5. What do you do /did you do as a career
I have had an unorthodox career. I started life as a solicitor on the south coast of England with Thomas Eggar in 1989. Two lawyers in that firm were my greatest mentors: Michael Camps and Anthony Edwards. Two wonderful lawyers, in different ways, who had the decency to see beyond themselves and help those coming on in the firm. In 1991 I joined the British army, then went to the international courts prosecuting genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in the nineties. Now I am newly minted Queens Counsel. I have had a wonderful career and I thank my wife and children,my parents and sister Jane (also an OB) and BC for that.

6. What does your job involve?
I am principally an international criminal lawyer involved in the the prosecution of large scale crimes such as genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. I have been involved in cases in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Uganda, Sudan, Sierra Leone and Cambodia. So trying to bring some degree of personal accountability in respect of criminal conduct during and in the aftermath of wars and civil unrest.

7. What are the most challenging parts of your job?
The evidence I address is often very distressing. The victims often suffer in silence for years on end. The trials are very long and evidence degrades the older it is. Physical evidence disappears and memories fade. In Cambodia we are addressing events that took place over 30 years ago.

8. What have you done that you are most proud of?
First my family : My wife Andrea and my four children Alexander, Anna, Edmund and Eleanor. The second, this year, being appointed one of Her Majesty's Queen's Counsel learned in the law. Third the successful prosecution of events in Srebrenica in 2001. Where we proved genocide for the murder of over 9000 men and boys in the space of a week. In the face of lies and propaganda we demonstrated that these tragic events took place and that was vital for the victims and the world.

9. What is the single thing that would most improve the quality of your life?
48 hours in a day.

10. What are the three objects you would take with you to a desert island?
A photograph of my wife and children, an endless subscription to Private Eye and a good bottle of red wine (refillable from passing ships).

11. How would you like to be remembered?
In passing I would not wish to be enlarged beyond that which I was in life. I saw terrible wrongs and as a member of the human race simply reacted and played a modest part in condemning those responsible. Like most people I am complex and I have many flaws but I hope my children remember me as someone who tried hard to stand firmly against the oppression and killing of defenceless and innocent people throughout the world. And that they might be inspired to follow a less conventional path in life. The temptation to follow a prosperous course, that private education generally opens, is very great. But there is much that needs to be done in a world which yields painfully to change. And I think there is a great deal that my children and indeed students of BC have to offer such a challenge. Self-confidence, sound education, resilience, sincerity, courage, honesty and integrity and most important the idealism of youth. These are values that are timeless but are required today more than ever before.

OB of the Month

Andrew Cayley (B. 197782)

The Heads of Houses pledged the participants' oath whilst dressed in their House Sports Vests. The rest of the week saw more Olympic themed events, as each House bought into the Olympic Ideal of participation over performance. The A2 Sport Science group presented the History of the Olympics in an enlightening and amusing fashion to the Lower and Middle School on Tuesday.

The next day saw five members of staff discuss their favourite Olympians in Chapel. Miss Duffield chose the South African swimmer, Natalie du Toit; Mr Lambe, Jesse Owens; Miss Sturgeon selected Ethiopian Marathon Champion, Abebe Bikila; and Mr Withers produced a brilliant portrayal of Lord Burleigh, but after an online vote, Mr Pass's pick, Daley Thompson, came out the worthy winner. Other events throughout the week saw Leconfield and Abraham display the Olympic Field event records in the Front Quad - the javelin record stretches from Abraham House to the Prep School front door! Head's House undertook a triathlon; Chichester and Ryle produced Olympic cake sales; and Aldrich took part in the 71 club swim.

In DT, pupils designed and made Olympic medals, the 1936 Berlin Olympics were studied in History, whilst in Chemistry, the Lower Third created their own suite of bronze, silver and gold 'medals' as they learned how to change the colour of copper coins.

Brighton College

report

sport

Over the coming weeks, contractors will work on creating the changing rooms, referee and first aid rooms, and a large social space with a café-bar, all of which are much-needed at the site. The warm and welcoming sports hub will transform pupils’ and parents’ experience at the New Ground, and provide facilities that reflect the sporting excellence at the school.

Fundraising is continuing in order to fund the surrounding landscape works and there are still opportunities to contribute at all levels, including exclusive naming opportunities. All those who give will be invited to a special opening event at the new Pavilion later this year, bringing together friends and supporters in celebration of Brighton College sport. If you would like to discuss ways in which you could support the Diamond Jubilee Pavilion, please contact Debra Chalmers, Development Director, at dchalmers@brightoncollege.net or on 01273 704234.

Brighton College

report

sport

After a delay to assess the pitches, it was decided that, despite the conditions, the tournament would go ahead. Only 12 teams were available so the draw was re-organised and we played the Marauders first. Despite a try by Ryan Bhimji, we lost to the semi-professional Marauders 10 - 5.

Victories against Crowborough, 32 - 7 with tries from Tom Aiken, Sam Wellings, Sam Woodhead, Tijman Dye & Ed Kittow and GDS Hermits 29 - 14 with tries from Ryan Bhimji, Ed Court, Ed Kittow and Sam Woodhead allowed the Pelicans to progress into the quarter finals, where the team met the Kamikazes, another semi-professional side. Despite a try & conversion from Andy Doc and the loss of one of the Kamikaze players to the sin bin, the OB Pelicans lost 14 - 7 in a very close game.

Many thanks to both players and supporters for a great day despite the weather conditions.

The next confirmed 7s tournament is the Newquay Surf 7s on Sat 30th June & Sun 1st July.

Tom Aiken is again organising the squad so if you are interested in taking part please contact him at thomasaiken10@gmail.com or on 07718 315715.

rugby

report

sport

This was the latter... but I cannot remember laughing so hard and so long!

For one thing the calibre of attendee was particularly high this evening; Graham Appleton (D. 1953-57) was on especially fine form as he regaled us with an endless stream of hysterical tales of derring do with the recently late Alan Mann (L. 1950-53) whose obituary I had only posted on this site earlier in the day. Alan sounded like and extraordinary man, and we all lamented the fact that we had not met him in person. We particularly enjoyed Graham's tales of deer hunting by helicopter in Scotland in the 70's...

It was great to meet Peter Kent (S. 1967-69) for the first time, and we were again sorry not to meet his father Denis (also an OB) in person; Peter had in fits of giggles at his father's exploits at school - notably the disassembly bit by bit of an ageing Tiger Moth aircraft that graced the front quad in the late 60's... he has promised an introduction soon!

We were sorry that Duncan Shaw (D. 1979-84) and Gary Browne (L. 1979-83) were unable to make it along, and very much hope that we'll see them soon - perhaps at the 80's reunion in May.

Those attending included:
Alex Bremer (R. 1979-83)

Adam Belson (R. 1979-84)

Ben Stott (R. 1979-84)

Kevin O'Mahoney (R. 1979-84)

Joey Appleton (D. 1979-84)

John Vadgama (S. 1964-68)

Graham Appleton (D. 1953-57)

Peter Kent (S. 1967-69)
Jack Bremer (BCJS. 1990-94)

events

report

Having recently had dinner with a number of Old Brightonians in January, I was lambasted for not letting you know that I was presented with an OBE by the Queen on 30 November 2011. The award was announced in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List on 11 June 2011. Also in attendance on 30 Nov were Brian Ferry and Mark Cavendish and it appears they received more publicity than me!

I have not seen my OBE citation but the following extract is taken directly from a letter sent to me by Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton, the Chief of the Air Staff:

‘The award justifiably recognises not only your outstanding leadership, commitment and care of your people throughout your tenure as Officer Commanding IX(Bomber) Squadron but also and especially during the many Operational deployments. Central to the Squadron’s preparation and success during the Operational deployments, was your example and determination to set the bar for operational delivery and the continued development of personnel at an achievable yet demanding height. Your identification of the need for joint planning during Operation MOSHTARAK in March 2010 was key to the success of the Operation and was undoubtedly central to operational delivery with no UK casualties and all objectives achieved. Moreover, your outstanding dedication, inspirational verve and passion for improvement both in the work environment and in the wider local community is an example to us all.’

I was fortunate enough to command IX(B) Squadron, a Tornado GR4 Squadron, between Oct 08 and Nov 10. During this period, the Squadron deployed for over 6 months on air operations over both Iraq and Afghanistan. We also deployed twice to Germany (5 weeks) and once to the US (4 weeks) to execute essential pre-deployment training – the latter deployment to Germany was in our role as the lead RAF Suppression of Enemy Air Defences Squadron where we operated alongside Polish, Turkish and German Squadrons against realistic threats in Southern Germany.

Although the Chief of the Air Staff refers to ‘no UK casualties’ during Op MOSHTARAK, this was during the period of the infil and not the ensuing weeks and months when multinational and Afghan forces continued their endeavours to bring security to the area. Unfortunately, lives were lost as the Operation ensued.

Throughout my tour in command, the dedication of the men and women of IX(B) Squadron was awe-inspiring and the OBE is a reflection of their endeavours, often in a very hostile environment. The families were also unbelievably supportive as we ask a lot of our military personnel (in fact, IX(B) Squadron was the first to deploy in support of the recent Libyan operation). Even our return from Afghanistan post 3.5 months in theatre was eventful as we were stuck in Cyprus during the period of the Volcanic Ash cloud. For the majority of us, the route home was a flight to Northern Spain, followed by a 5-hr coach trip to the port of Santander, a few hours sleep on the cobbles in an old storage shed and then an overseas trip to Portsmouth courtesy of HMS ALBION. The subsequent 4-hr trip to Norfolk by coach was subsequently a doddle but it was great to be home! After arriving home at 1am, we were then overwhelmed by the support of the local community as over 3000 people supported our homecoming in the town of Downham Market the following day.

Nick Hay (C. 1981-86) is married to Carol Hay nee Grant (F. 1985-87).

Links:

The Tornado Squadron in Afghanistan is using new techniques to provide crucial on-the-ground intelligence, from the air. The project - focusing on improvised explosive devices - needs a specialised team of 130 people, and 9 aircraft, working out of Kandahar Airbase. Wing Commander of the RAF's 9 Bomber Squadron, Nick Hay, shows Caroline Wyatt how a new 'Litening pod' is helping them see things more clearly.

A few of the Squadron are shown on the deck of HMS Albion waving the green and yellow flag!

To mark the 100th anniversary Old Brightonian Lt-Commander John Blake (B. 1957-61) has this year published "The Titanic Passenger's Guide".

John is somewhat of a maritime authority, having spent 12 years in the Royal Navy and as a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation. He has written several books, 'The Sea Chart' (2003) and 'Sea Charts of the British Isles' (2005) and has followed this with "The Titanic Passenger's Guide", published in respect of her tragic sinking 100 years ago this year. The book was compiled from some ten maritime Titanic related archives (e.g. Liverpool and National Maritime Museums, Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, Southampton Museum, Admiralty Library) with material contemporary to her concept, design, construction, launch and ship's operation.

It includes, with colour photographs, passenger facilities in some 128pages, but in a pocket book size. In fact it is what one might have been given if a passenger on her maiden voyage. Beautifully bound and illustrated the book is available from all good bookshops or on-line at Amazon (see above).

Any funds raised over and above the costs of the memorial will be used to set up a fund, The Naishel Kelly Memorial Fund, to assist Brighton College families who find themselves in difficult circumstances through the death or serious illness of a child or other family member. We hope that this will be an on-going fund, which will offer help and support to families at a time of distress and need.

We are sure that members of the Brighton College community will want to give generously, and you can do so by donating on-line through the 'Alumni and Development' section of the College website, or by sending a cheque (payable to 'Brighton College') to the Development & Alumni Office (Brighton College, Eastern Road, Brighton BN2 0AL).

Naishel's father is OB Ian Kelly (A.1957-61), her uncle Malcolm Kelly (L. 1951-54), her cousin Mark Burgess (R. 1980-85). He was a part-time racing driver and team manager who ran a substantial part of the hugely successful Ford works racing effort in Europe from 1964 to 1969.

Born in Worthing, West Sussex, Mann attended Brighton and Hove grammar school before progressing to Brighton College. Much to his regret, injury debarred him from doing his national service, and he joined the motor trade, working his way up from the role of a straightforward junior salesman.

Alan Mann Racing's iconic red and gold livery graced cars from Mk1 Escorts and Cortinas to Lightweight GT40s and the F3L prototype, and some of the best drivers of the period from Graham Hill and Sir Jackie Stewart to Sir John Whitmore and Frank Gardner raced for the team, which achieved substantial successes in many different forms of the sport. Alan's team also built the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bangs for the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The most famous one being the one registered as Gen 11.

Our condolences to Alan’s widow, Sharon, and this two sons Thomas and Henry. There will be a private funeral and then a Memorial service is being held at 12noon on Thursday 3 May at Romsey Abbey, nr Southampton.

Alan's obituary in The Guardian.

Whilst studying at Exeter University Nick made his first foray into the property market by buying properties, refurbishing and letting them out for student accommodation. He set up his first company, Imperial Property Co, in 1997 while still at university.

Nick came along to our Property Group in October and is hosting a Brighton Property Group networking event for us in May (date to be confirmed), at The Lansdowne Place Hotel. The 1980s decade reunion is also being held at the hotel on Saturday 19th May, and we are most grateful to Nick for his on-going support.

1. When you were at Brighton College, what did you want to be when you ‘grew-up’?
1983 to 1988, I wanted to be rich!

2. What are you now you've grown up?
A Property developer and investor primarily in residential development, hotels and leisure. I have also created a serviced apartment business Max Serviced Apartments with over 400 apartments across the UK.

3. What is your best memory of school?
Beating Leconfield in a house rugby match having been way down at half time. I remember kicking the last conversion from the touch line which had to go over to win.

4. What was the best piece of advice you were given
You can do it.

5. What do you do /did you do as a career?
Initially trained as an accountant with Arthur Andersen and then went into property.

6. What does your job involve?
Taking dilapidated old buildings which are often listed and bringing them back to life.

7. What are the most challenging parts of your job?
The recession has been really tough with an incredible lack of liquidity for property projects.

8. What have you done that you are most proud of?
Becoming young property person of the year in 2002.

9. What is the single thing that would most improve the quality of your life?
A booming economy.

10. What are the three objects you would take with you to a desert island?
My kindle, a supply of magnum ice creams and a helicopter so I can leave.

11. How would you like to be remembered?
A loving husband and a great dad.

OB of the Month

We were fortunate with a glorious spring day, indeed St David's Day, for our 7th Vice-Presidents Luncheon, hosted by Peter Miller (C. 1945-49) at The Army & Navy Club.

Drinks prior to the event were well attended, and the handful of early birds enjoyed watching the march around St James's Square by members of the Naval & Military Club (The In & Out Club) who were celebrating their 150th Anniversary. Led by the Band of the Royal Logistics Corps, they were greeted by Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, before retiring for lunch inside the club. It was quite a sight to behold, and as Peter Miller noted perhaps we should have charged extra for the spectacle!

Peter had thoughtfully asked Derek Jones (C. 1945-51) to give the grace in welsh in honour of the date. All enjoyed a superb luncheon, and managed to do some homework for the OB office at the same time - annotating a list of Old Brightonians that we have lost contact with. Matt Godfrey, Master of School House brought greetings from the Head Master and news from the College. Matt spoke fondly of retiring Master John Spencer (Master 1978-2012) who as Head of Geography and a fine cricketer has been a stalwart of the College for many years and will be much missed. John noted cheerfully that he would be retiring at the end of 99 terms service. Sir John Chilcot (H/S 1952-57), President of the Old Brightonians, gave a nostalgic and heartfelt speech recalling his schooldays. Our thanks go to Peter Miller (C. 1945-49) for hosting this most enjoyable annual event.

In attendance:

Michael Bishop (C. 1960-65)
Peter Bowles (A. 1945-50)
John Carter (H. 1959-64)
John Chilcot (H./S. 1952-57)
Peter Cockburn (S. 1959-64)
Stephen Cockburn (S. 1953-58)
Tim Corbett (B. 1962-66)
John Crosthwaite (H. 1946-49)
Mark Green (A. 1973-78)
Derek Jones (C. 1945-51)
Tim Loadsman (L. 1951-57)
Tony Merrifield (H. 1953-58)
Jeremy Miles (C. 1951-56)
Peter Miller (C. 1945-49)
David Nelson-Smith (H. 1949-55)
Clive Nicholls (C. 1946-50)
Malcolm Paris (A. 1954-58)
Alan Seager (C. 1948-53)
Simon Smith (Master 1973-11)
Tony Whitestone (Master 1971-06)

Current College Staff:
Rebecca Findlay Old Brightonians
Matthew Godfrey Master of School House
Scott Sheridan Development Officer
John Spencer Head of Geography (Master 1978-12)

events

report

Rt Hon Sir John Chilcot GCB (President 2010 to present)

S J Cockburn (President 1991 to 1994)
