He was a persistent fellow with great faith, yet thought to be foolish. For many years he was the only purchaser of cotton in Savannah. He bought it in meager lots of twenty to a hundred pounds and assorted it and packed it himself for market. Everyone had heard the story of how the very first shipment of cotton from Savannah in 1784, eight measly bags of it, had been seized at Liverpool because it was said that that much cotton could not have been produced in the United States. England's industrialist had been very leery of cotton and had big investments in wool. But now they were accepting it. Big mills were built and ready for the American cotton. Bales of cotton piled up in longer and longer rows along the riverfront at Augusta, being carted in wagons from South Carolina and Georgia plantations. By 1805 Savannah was shipping 27,600 bales to Liverpool, which was one-fourth of all of the cotton sent to that English port from the United States. As this occurred, there emerged a person by the name of Eli Whitney. Catherine Greene, wife of General Greene, learned about Eli from Phineas Miller, manager of their Greene plantation. They were now the owners of <i>Mulberry Grove</i>&nbsp;plantation and Eli was brought there to devise the cotton gin. Whitney was from New England and she met him on a ship which was taking her back from her former home in Rhode Island to Savannah. Whitney was going South to fill a teaching post at the then new University of Georgia which was situated in Athens. She persuaded him to visit <i>Mulberry Grove</i>. &nbsp;It was during this visit that he invented and patented the cotton gin. &nbsp;Another inventor with a patent but the courts upheld the Eli Whitney patent as legitimate. Many persons lost their entire fortunes. However, before the war some planters along the coastal islands were beginning to experiment with sea-island cotton imported from the Bahamas into the Carolinas and Georgia. Before the war some of the larger plantations of several thousand acres were trying the new cotton. But after the war, these vast plantations were broken up, Take <i>Mulberry Grove</i> owned by loyalist Governor Sir James Wright. He had 523 slaves working on his eleven plantations. The average size of a rice plantation was 400 acres. Such plantations ordered in wholesale lots from England. Savannah drew upon the prosperity of the plantations to expand its business and financial interest, its banks, and its shipping. Ocean-going vessels sailed into the harbor with finished goods and took away the produce of the lowlands and the upper valley. Savannah was incorporated as a city in 1789. Clay, O'Bryen and Howley for Generals Nathaniel Greene and Anthony Wayne. But Greene soon became the owner of <i>Mulberry Grove</i>, which appear to have resulted in some hard feelings from Wayne. &nbsp;Wayne, as we recall, was encamped near Savannah and playing tricks on the Creeks when Cornwallis surrendered in Virginia. &nbsp;As he rode through the war-torn city observing buildings damaged by cannonball, it caused him some stress. Mrs. Hannah Gibbons, a member of the wealthy Gibbons families owning extensive plantations near Savannah and in Liberty County, purchased the acreage for 8 pds: 2 shillings per acre. They went into the Florida everglades, Barbadoes and Canada. To see what happened to their estates let us start with the colonial governor, Sir James Wright. According to the records, Wright owned a number of local plantations around Savannah but we have little knowledge that an affluent life-style was reflected in the structures. Remember that the first colonists in Savannah had a major struggle to exist, what with crime and lazy citizens, some of whom ran off (even though they were indentured servants) and settled around Charleston, South Carolina. &nbsp;Oglethorpe's idea of social justice for the unfortunate poor persons parading the streets of London, that they would work to be successful in a colony of tradesmen, was delusional. As it were, these were the very people who continued their careless life-styles in the colony. It was the Germans and Austrians who were the hard-workers and they established small villages at and around Ebenezer. Thus, just like today's food stamps and free housing, telephones, etc., that population fails to rise above its circumstances, while and allows the industrious to wait upon them. &nbsp; Considering what the records say about crime, murderers, etc., it is difficult to imagine that Governor Wright had anything but problems.<br /> <br /> However, let us examine it. On June 13, 1782 &nbsp;and during 1783, all of the properties of Sir James Wright were disposed of. &nbsp;His 140 acre plantation called <i>River plantation</i>&nbsp;located on the Great Ogeechee River was sold publicly to John Ward for 21 pds., 7 shillings per acre, who also purchased his 500 acre property known as <i>Fort Argyle Tract</i>&nbsp;for 6 pounds per acre. The Great Ogeechee River was populated in Georgia and South Carolina with rice planters, the money crop of the day. This venture required many common laborers or slaves. Governor Wright also had another 140 acres on the Great Ogeechee known as the <i>Point plantation</i>, which was purchased by Samuel Elbert for 21 pds: 1 shilling per acre.Jacob Read purchased his 500 pine acreage on the Great Ogeechee which adjoined Savage, Feaster and Cherry at 1/6th pound per acre and Major Richard Call purchased 450 acres on the same river known by <i>Sandy Hill</i>&nbsp;for 9 pds:10 shillings per acre. &nbsp;During the same month, his&nbsp;<i>Middlebridge</i>&nbsp;plantation of 150 acres was purchased by Hampton Lillibridge of Savannah for 15 pds: 18 shillings per acre and simultaneously Colonel James Jackson purchased <i>Lower plantation</i>&nbsp;of 150 acres at 14 pds: 13 shillings per acre. &nbsp;Dr. William Read purchased 200 acres on the Great Ogeechee called <i>Laurel Hill plantation</i>&nbsp;for 14 pds. per acre. &nbsp;John Jenkins purchased 500 acres on the Great Ogeechee and Canauchee called <i>the white house</i>&nbsp;for 5 pds: 6 shillings per acre. &nbsp;His 300 acre plantation on the Great Ogeechee called <i>Sage Field plantation</i>&nbsp;sold for 13 pds: 8 shillings per acre to John Howel.<br /> <br /> Naturally, the estates of the loyalists were also confiscated, however, Governor Wright enjoyed British possession of Savannah, thus he had sufficient time and resources to ship out his valuables while others lost everything. &nbsp; Wright's Square in Savannah was named for Sir James Wright.<br /> <br /> <a href="http://images-onepick-opensocial.googleusercontent.com/gadgets/proxy?container=onepick&amp;gadget=a&amp;rewriteMime=image%2F*&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fgeorgiapioneers.com%2Fimages%2Fmulberrygrove2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="http://images-onepick-opensocial.googleusercontent.com/gadgets/proxy?container=onepick&amp;gadget=a&amp;rewriteMime=image%2F*&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fgeorgiapioneers.com%2Fimages%2Fmulberrygrove2.jpg" width="320" /></a>The famous <i>Mulberry Grove</i>&nbsp;on the Great Ogeechee River was owned by Sir James Wright. They paid close attention to details, recording notes, new laws, and activities, keeping Minutes and journals. The new business of Georgia was conducted in a thoroughly diligent manner and its proceedings are recorded in a series of volumes called&nbsp;<i>The Revolutionary Records</i>&nbsp;by Coulter. &nbsp;Notes were made of the absence of certain of its members who were busy restoring their plantations and estates and requests that these absentees attending meetings was recorded in the minutes. One night General Wayne and his little army barely escaped extermination in a surprise night attack by some three hundred Creeks led by Guristersijo who had been dispatched on this mission by Alexander McGillivray, the great half-breed Creek leader in Alabama who so detested the Americans. General Wayne had relaxed his vigilance somewhat. The camp was poorly guarded as Guristersijo prepared his coup and discovered that there was only one sentry at their rear and a handful of guards in their front towards Savannah. The Indians advanced quietly in the dead of night from the rear, killing the lone sentry, and with wild war whoops swarmed towards the camp. Wayne was the first out of his tent, having a pistol in one hand and a sword in the other. &nbsp;He sized up the situation quickly and began shouting orders. The attack was successfully repelled. The general almost lost his life. He had mounted his horse to better direct the counterattack and Guristersijo, lying on the ground, sent a bullet into the animal. The horse fell under the American commander. But he got himself clear without injury. This night attack was the last battle.
